Instagram Offers Visual Allure, and the Travel Industry Wants In

When I view these types of Instagram photos all's it tells me is that these are the places to definitely avoid in my travels. I also avoid all hotels with the rooftop bars and nightclubs. Holding a 10 lb. frosted and sprinkled donut while wearing a hotel robe sitting in a bath tub would excite my 8 year old. Whatever became of adult accommodations? You know, ones where you can actually get a good night's sleep and a decent cup of in room coffee in the morning. I don't want or need a 10 lb. donut to go with it.

I am sorry but Instagram offers ZERO visual allure. Their design is one of the least visually appealing things one existence. On the desktop the images are tiny, the background is white, and the visual experience is polluted by the mindless chatter in the comments section which occupy more real estate than the image itself. On thr phone the issues are similar but compounded by the small screen. I joke that Instagram too everything that was vusually wrong with Facebook and made it three times worse.

I can definitely relate to how Instagram fosters annoying, boorish behavior that diminishes the tourism experience for those not inclined to trumpet every moment of our "beautiful lives" on IG. Every year, my husband and I look forward to canoeing in Grand Teton National Park. Jenny Lake is the crown jewel of the park's lakes, imo, but it's often too windy so we don't count on getting to canoe on Jenny. In June 2017, we were all set to go: calm water, open access, no clouds, when up pulled the style posse from the Four Seasons Jackson Hole. It took enough people to fill 4 or 5 vehicles in order to pose a couple of dollies enjoying their "rustic" experience. There went the access, there went the parking spaces, there went the efficiency of getting our canoe and gear in the water. It was such a cluster we gave up. If you think these charming IG shots for hotels, resorts, restaurants are the least bit impromptu, think again. They can take forever and you can count on getting elbowed out of the way.
