If you can, just have your own holiday a week or 2 later. Saves a bundle + airports are emptier.

Thanks for this article. I booked a flight at the end of September for my son to fly home from college (LA) using 115,000 miles. I check again today and the mileage requirement for the same trip dropped to 81,000 miles. I called the airline who revised the flight and returned 34,000 miles to my account.
