Splendid life.

I am reminded, reading Jack’s obituary, of his association not only with Melville but with another great New York writer - Joseph Mitchell. By Jack’s telling, he and Mitchell would ramble through the seaport and the Fulton Fish Market, stopping at Sloppy Louie’s for a meal - places that now exist only in memory, and in Mitchell’s writing for The New Yorker. I can only hope that the two of them - along with Melville - are now, in spirit, circumambulating city of a dreamy Sabbath, together.

@Olenska: Correction: ... of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon ... (apologies to Messers. Melville, Putnam and Mitchell).

Did Mr. Putnam also give tours of the Fulton Fish Market prior to its closing?
