Very interesting speech and a sound plan for MAGA! This President is a true Reformer and a lot of “the business as usual Swamp People” are resisting his efforts to change age Olde bad habits and their status quo...See how the ones who laugh sarcastically are the ones Trump wants to cuff some sense into, and they are angrily resisting the inevitable change! Just do it, sir!

Trump gave his United Nation’s speech, and the room filled with laughter...at Trump, and his hot air. He needs to go back to Mar A Largo, permantely!
Geraldine Conrad (Chicago)
Haley is quite ambitious and she will protect her options, no matter the cost to us.

I am waiting for the dictator, and traitor, in chief to start a war with Iran and China. "Fealty?" Really? Like Putin, who wants to be a czar, Trump wants to be a king. There are stories about George III, our last king, about being unstable. Trump is on course to exceed George III in many ways. George III had an illness; what is Trump's excuse? If this is not enough to invoke the 25th Amendment, or impeach him, then the GOP deserves to be voted out on droves. Maybe this is what Trump wants for our new National Anthem: God save our noble Tsar! Great be his glory! Growing in power and majesty; Tsar! May good fortune be Showered upon thee; God save thee still, Our Noble Tsar! So, we all pledge fealty to him.

Trump is clearly delusional and living in a world of "alternative facts" where all happens according to his delusions. We aren't closer to anything positive with North Korea. NK isn't going to denuclearize and Kim Jong Un has learned to play on Trump's vanity masterfully to elevate his own status. The rest of the world is learning how to function without the participation of the US and US importance and influence will continue to wane under the Trump Administration.
Nostradamus Said So (Midwest)
And the World laughed when he started to brag about how great he is & all he has done. How embarrassing to be American. Did he honestly expect applause & shouts of "bravo"? When will we be rid of this humiliation???
Jaime (WA)
Mr. Trump said he stood behind Judge Kavanaugh and dismissed the claims of the two women as “totally political.” Does anyone really expect anything else from our lying commander in chief? Even if Kavanaugh was caught on video assaulting Dr. Ford he would call it fake news and defend him. One predator supporting another is simply predictable. An aside, how can Trump go to the UN and have any credibility? He can't even unite his own country. What a disgrace.
rubbernecking (New York City)
Bolton, Pompeo, Haley, Trump, a line up worthy of car sales in a Coen Brothers movie.
Joe Kaiser (Florida)
UN rep Haley should be ashamed of just how low she has sunk becoming no more than a court jester for trump. I especially love the remark “keeping up with trump’s speed”. I suspect that comment was really meant to sound like hospital staff trying to put him in a straight jacket when he is off his meds.
Duncan Lennox (Canada)
@Joe Kaiser Actually Haley is performing true to her character. She is a politician which is a 4 letter word where it applies to her. Eg. As gov`r of SC he refused to consider taking the Rebel flag down from the legislature until the white nationalist killed several people in a Charleston church. Then she had to run like hell to get to the front of the parade to get it down. She carries the water for anyone that will further her ambitions. ie a politician.
Eero (East End)
"Mr. Trump said the tangle of charges brought first by Christine Blasey Ford and now Deborah Ramirez could be one of the “single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate for anything.”" ??? Ask Merrick Garland about that.
Moe Def (E’town, Pa.)
Watching the President speak now, and he is right in that the country is doing very well to the point that skilled Americans are a rare commodity in the ever expanding labor market! He even got a few laughs and nods of approval when discussing border security from E.U. Nations. Stay tuned...
J. Faye Harding (Mt. Vernon, NY)
@Moe Def He got laughed at not with. Stop pretending otherwise.

The chaos in Washington won't impact Trump's actions with the United Nations. The man thrives in chaos. That's because he doesn't really care about anything but himself and how he appears. That keeps it simple for him regardless of what's going on about him. And he gets by with it because he appeals to the self-centered beliefs of his base and the seam of bigotry in many more. In a reasonable world, Trump would be like a fish out of water. But we do not live in a reasonable world; we live in a world of beliefs and manufactured values. In the near future, we will program the human mind in the computer, and this will be based on a "survival" algorithm. Then, we will finally learn how we confuse the mind about what exactly is supposed to survive with our ridiculous beliefs. At that point we will begin the long trek back to reason and sanity. Of course, this media circus will continue at UN. The same reporters who cover the White House follow POTUS everywhere and that's the only thing that matters to them - inside the Beltway gossip, smears, innuendos, and commentary. I live in Bogota, Colombia - where judge Kavanaugh is hardly a news even among Colombians who travel to America and are avid fans of our sports. I think, it's time folks in America calm down and not think that this is the Appomatox or Dunkirk or all those famous battle places (I forget Gettysburg) where life or death decisions were made. And as in Valley Forge, even the very existence of our Republican was at stake. From a distance in Bogota, I think we are hardly there. This Washington DC centric news media - where universe begins and ends there - gives rise to this drama. I watched all UN proceedings on C-SPAN (live and delayed) - I was glad to see our very able ambassador to UN make a good representative of America - in her gracious remarks at that drug summit and her ability to have 130 plus members sign on to an American sponsored resolution at a place where America is hardly loved. To me, that was America at work in UN. Rest is circus for folks who like nothing but a circus - all the time.
SurlyBird (NYC)
@Neil a good reminder about other things happening. Thanks for that. Though perhaps over-heated, certainly over-hyped, Kavanaugh's nomination IS big in what it is very likely to do to the USSC balance---especially re women's rights, voting rights and (relevant to our current Trumpian woes) the powers of the executive. This struggle has been "bubbling up" for some time now. No small stakes. Lingering anger over Merrick Garland adds fuel to this fire. Thank Mitch McConnell.
John (Nashville, Tennessee)
@Neil From your perspective, I would imagine it is difficult to understand the furor over Trump and his attendant foibles. Hopefully he will help you limit cocoa production in Colombia.
Edward Blau (WI)
Trump's speech at the UN is no more important than if he were speaking to a Rotary Club in Lincon, NE. The UN over the last decades has proven to be in a word, useless. The UN troops who were in the Balkans allowed a massacre of Muslim men, in Hati they introduced cholera that killed as many as the earthquake did and in Africa they rob, kill and rape. The UN was a good idea in 1945 but no longer.
Barbarra (Los Angeles)
The turmoil is entirely Trump’s fault. He can’t keep quiet about anything and his antagonist approach to governing has isolated him from potential friends and traditional allies. His conceit has resulted in this embattled state at home and now abroad with Russian missiles in Syria and an alienated China.
Robert (Out West)
I suppose I shouldn’t be terribly surprised that Trumpists cannot for the life of them recognize that it’s immensely dangerous for this country to have an obvious fool strutting around on the world stage like this. I mean, basically we’ve got a President who’s got the knowledge base of a turnip, the self-control of a toddler, and a right-wing greedhead’s dim little view of the world. So, what we’ll get is escalating threats, dictators and the wealthiest stroking his little ego, and a long list of disasters that’ll get passed off as heroic wins. Sure, it’s fun to watch. Problem is, it’ll all need to be paid for. Don’t even worry about a serious crisis in the shortish term; worry about what you’re gonna have to pay and to lose when the real bills on the environment, economy, and geopolitics start coming due. It’s not just the $2 trillion in giveaways to the wealthiest that got stuck on the national credit card. And the late payment charges on that sucker are brutal.
NYer (NYC)
Imagine being a world leader or ambassador -- often with deep background knowledge of international affairs and diplomacy -- and having to listing to this blubbering buffoon? And a buffoon, who has "merely" destabilized the world order, democracy, and respect for the rule of law, to boot! There should be a remake of Being There about all this. Maybe crossed with 7 Days in May and the Manchurian Candidate?
Ronald J Kantor (Charlotte, NC)
What a vicious, mean, and narrow-minded fool our President is. When the fish stinks from the head, everybody suffers. All of the people who think a rising stock market is worth all of this anxiety and humiliation as a nation, are in a for a big surprise when the impact of Trump's trade and domestic policies start to yield negative economic performance data. Then, the market will fall, and the country will get a first hand look at what happens when you put greed in front of morality and democratic values.
Larry (NY)
Why doesn’t the news media focus on Trump’s foreign policy on a day he attends the United Nations? Because they would risk saying something positive about him. Can’t have that!
Joe B. (Center City)
What foreign policy? Where is Jared’s secret fool-proof peace plan? Where is Commander Chaos’ promised secret war plan for Afghanistan? We are the only country not in Paris deal, every other party to the Iran nuclear deal is still in, including Iran, and Kim still has nukes and big missiles. The TPP goes forward, China pushes us out of Asia, tariffs ricochete at our farmers and consumers, and NAFTA twists in the wind. America First, eh? More like “America Last”. America Alone.
Larry (NY)
@Joe B., now tell us how bad the economy is.
Blasthoff (South Bend, IN)
@Larry The bills are only beginning to come in. When it truly hits home all you will do is blame Democrats, Medicare and Medicaid as you pass off more and more regressive taxation on the working and poor as more gets gifted to the future Oligarchs of America. Start making up your excuses now as more and more of working Americas enter the ranks of poverty as Trump profits on taxpayer money spent on his own personal excesses.
John (Nashville, Tennessee)
What a proud day for Americans when our president, the "stable genius" (his words) spoke out in opposition to Colombia's increased "cocoa" production.
appleseed (Austin)
Wouldn't it be great to have a President? Even a Republican. Heck, I'd take most anyone off the street and it would be an improvement. Trump's problem is not who he, is but where he is. He should be a bartender in Queens.
Mary Anne M (Alberta)
@appleseed Mu understanding is that bartenders in Queens are really quite intelligent. Maybe one of them would consider running for president in 2020?
Mary (Atascadero, CA)
If Kavanaugh is forced onto the Supreme Court by the Republicans then Democrats should impeach Kavanaugh after they take control either in 2018 or 2020. We don't need another lying sexual deviate on the Supreme Court making decisions that affect every person in this country especially women.
independent (NC)
Is it so "hard to recall a General Assembly that opened against a backdrop of such political turmoil"? How about: Adlai Stevenson, Cuban missile crisis 1962 Arab-Israeli conflicts (e.g., 1967 6-day war). Colin Powell, WMD and Iraq 2003 The NY Times should be above hyperbole (so favored by President Trump).
Thomas Payne (Cornelius, NC)
Here's the bottom line: In 2020 we Democrats can take back the White House and put enough Democrats in the U.S. Senate that we'll be able to easily impeach Kavanaugh and the illegitimate Gorsuch. That should be our short-term strategy.
Debra (Bethesda, MD)
Don't forget Thomas! He should never have been confirmed. He perjured himself & should be impeached as the 1st order of business.
Joe B. (Center City)
Simpler to just change number of justices to 13 and add 100 federal circuit judges. Problem solved.
Robert (Out West)
Actually, “we Democrats,” don’t actually have ripping the Court apart to install the “right,” people as an actual first priority. Especially when we reflect that a) that’d actually make us just like Trumpists, and b) these alibis for not voting are actually really getting tiresome. Actually.
European American (Midwest)
Why does the media keep goading Trump into lying? The mere act of asking him a question that's devoid of groveling flattery or critical in any way always seems to elicit evasions, fallacies or flat out lies in response. "Inquiring minds want to know," sure...but accurate and truthful answers sure aren't going to come out of Donald Trump's mouth.
James Murphy (Providence Forge, Virginia)
Problems: all of them created by Trump himself. Man, what an embarrassment this incompetent individual is to the United States and the world as a whole.
Stephen (Ireland)
James, I’m not embarrassed by him in the slightest, he’s a fool and looks foolish to the rest of the world but he’s an American embarrassment he doesn’t belong to the rest of us. He’s a danger to everyone but the embarrassment is all yours.
Joe B. (Center City)
Nice photo. Dude has Sarah as his go-to for advice at U.N. Beyond pathetic.
Nostradamus Said So (Midwest)
@Joe B. he was just asking if those people were really laughing at him. he wants to know what was so funny.
Pat (Somewhere)
I can only imagine the private conversations, remarks, and jokes among the other world leaders about the current American government.
Hugh Massengill (Eugene Oregon)
Well, I am going to dive deep into Youtube and console myself with the words and thoughts of real leaders of America...I have found myself getting gloomier and gloomier, with this administration at work messing with my America. But there were times, even darker times, when we had inspiration and leadership. http://www.un.org/en/sections/history/history-united-nations/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-DjggJkNlc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdm3b0WPJCs Hugh Massengill, Eugene Oregon

Two takeaways from this piece. The first, "....to pledge their fealty to the president.". Fealty or unquestionable loyalty to the despot rather than the country? Second, he, Trump is looking forward to meeting with Kim soon. Hmm. I suppose Trump needs to be fooled a second time by someone who may be more intelligent and craftier at the con.
Rabble (VirginIslands)
For someone who seems to get all his instructions directly from the Fox-TV talking-heads he watches 6 hours a day, I am puzzled by Haley's claim they all are having trouble keeping up with him. On the other hand, that there are an entire Cabinet and hundreds of support staff, thousands of Wall Streeters, and millions of cheering red-hats willing to Let-Trump-be-Trump, which suggests they are confident they can control his blatherings enough to keep us from Armageddon. Rest easy, everyone.

Trump's selected officials, again, pledging fealty to Trump. This is a scene out of the movie "The Death of Stalin" . Astonishing how far our Country has sunk into the swamp in fewer than 24 months.
KenF (Staten Island)
If Trump's cabinet members have not even discussed the 25th Amendment, they are not doing their jobs.
John Simpson (Charlotte, NC)
Trump describes allegations by TWO women as, “One of the single most unfair, unjust things”. Again, he seems functionally incapable of making accurate statements. Mr. Rosenstein may not discuss the 25th Amendment but many other people are doing just that.
independent (NC)
@John Simpson Hi John. Trump is usually messy in his use of the English language. However, in this case (independent of the ludicrous hyperbole) his syntax is correct: "Mr. Trump said the tangle of charges brought first by Christine Blasey Ford and now Deborah Ramirez could be one of the “single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate for anything.” Tangle, the subject of the sentence, is singular. Respectfully, NLY
Grandma Roses (Northern hemisphere)
@independent ' (O)ne of the single ...' is a contradiction in terms.
independent (NC)
@Grandma Roses Seems to be less of a contradiction, more of a redundancy. "Singular" would have been more appropriate (implying highly usual). Otherwise, do you disagree with my comment on the original comment?
Prof. Jai Prakash Sharma (Jaipur, India.)
The baggage of confrontations and contradictions that Trump carries wherever he goes will obviously go with him when he moves to the UN to address the Assembly with all the familiar theatrics, melodrama, and political fireworks.
