Going Their Separate Ways, Eight Stories Apart

I admire those who open their lives to NYT readers so we can be all "judge-y" about their apartment decisions. Surprising this "Hunt" really brought out mean comments which may or may not have been deserved by highlighting a Trump property. I agree that two individuals concerned about "branding" were unlikely occupants of two units in a Trump-built and branded building. Highlighting the problems--especially the lack of sprinklers-- helped balance out the feeling this was an advertisement posing as an article. Those of us who live in Florida are generally intolerant of any space with "mold" because of the real health concerns. Molds generally are not confined to one unit in a large building and once found are difficult to eliminate. Mold does often indicate poor construction or maintenance. Perhaps Real Estate might cover the topic of "Mold" in rentals in some future article. I wish the twins well for the length of their lease. I suspect this building will be a learning experience for them for their next hunt.

They must be beyond guillble to throw away their money like that--and living in Jersey, no less, in a Trump building? No thanks on all counts.

What does it mean that an apartment is “branded very well”. Does that contribute in some way to living there?

@Michael c Perceived resale value...

can we have rental stories please about people who have to work for a living, not just bored wealthy people

I'd have serious thoughts about renting ANY Trump-built property: see: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/04/08/fatal-trump-tower-... (yes, and at the time the building was built Trump personally used his money/ influence to avoid the regulations that would have mandated the sprinklers).... also see: https://www.nationalreview.com/2016/02/donald-trump-wronged-trump-tower-... (so much for MAGA!)

“As twins, you see other twins as adults in their 40s and 50s and still wearing outfits that match, and we are not going to be that.” And yet there’s that picture...both in blue jeans and almost matching white blousy tops. Mmmm.

@Cameron Huff And their hair is exactly the same.

For that much money - you should have just bought a place!

I am disappointed that the NYT would choose to provide free advertising for a Trump property, including a hyperlink, via this article. Plenty of other renters in properties not profitting an ethically-compromised president that you could profile instead.

'They have had a few complaints. Some packages, incoming and outgoing, have gone astray. Hannah has had issues with mold, slow to be fixed. Dale has adequate cellphone service, but Hannah does not. “I feel I am cursed with bad cell reception no matter where I live,” she said.' I've lived in apartments in the DC area for years, and have never had a package 'go astray', nor had any mold issues. Guess that Trump brand isn't worth anything. Well, of course, that's obvious.

They're lovely, but I had to laugh when I read this quote, “As twins, you see other twins as adults in their 40s and 50s and still wearing outfits that match, and we are not going to be that.” Take another look at what they're wearing in their photo!

Truly riveting. They now each pay $3700 more or less, for their own 1BR apartments, which include lost packages and mold, in Jersey City no less. (Yes...we know J. City is hot now, but $3700? I wouldn't expect to pay that for a 'luxury' 1BR in ANY NYC nabe, never mind J. City.) But hey, on the plus side, they got three months 'free' (...a clever luxury bldg. R.E. developer gimmick so it takes a while to feel the 'ouch') and an extra 'amenity fee' waived.

Twins and eight stories--that sounded interesting. But it was about eight storeys, instead. That was a disappointment.

Two 31 year-olds upgrade from a $4700 2BR/2BA in Jersey City, to separate 1BR apts. at $3700 EACH. And even at that price, they have problem receiving packages and 'mold issues'? There sure are suckers born every minute. But hey, at least they are getting 'three months rent free' and 'amenity fees waived'. lol Those are classic R.E. developer sales pitches, for the clueless.

How does the cat call the elevator and how does it know what floor to go to?
fast/furious (the new world)
Going from paying $2300 a month each to paying $3795 each is not "spending a little more" - it's spending a LOT more.

It's all about personal preferences but I share a house with my brother and we don't feel like we're joined at the hip or anything. Weekdays, we don't see each other anyway except for a short time in the evening and even then, he hangs out on the 1st floor and I'm on the 2nd. On weekends, we also have separate interests although we do enjoy walks and meals together. We're in our 40s and for many years, lived on opposite sides of the country. It's interesting to see people's attitudes about sharing a home with a sibling. I find that people coming from certain backgrounds (e.g. Asian, Latino, Italian, etc.) don't find it odd at all while others think having your own place or even sharing with a stranger is better. We get along so the perks are great, including having someone you can truly rely on and saving thousands of dollars a month.

I would like to know how a 31 year old architect can afford $2,500 in rent. Architects, especially female ones, are grossly underpaid in this town.
Flahooley (NYC)
@cate I have the same question - and they are now each paying $3600+/month! Where is all their money coming from? I'm a 44-year old professional in Manhattan and could never afford that kind of rent. NYTimes: could you please report on how much income the people in your profiles have at their disposal? Are these kids trust funders? These numbers are ridiculously high, especially for such young people.
TexasTabby (Dallas,TX)
@cate I live in Texas (no state income tax) and make a low six-figure salary. Their rents are well over 60% of my take-home pay. No wonder they can only afford one cat! (I have two.)
The Gate Is Narrow (Tucson, AZ)
@cate It doesn’t even say she’s an architect, just that she works at an architectural firm.
EM (Boston)
You guys have great decorating style!
Liz (NYC)
I don't care how lovely it smells, I would never live anywhere that had the word trump attached to it.
Freedom (America)
The lovely smell is probably to hide the mold issue in this building. Probably exposes the third-quality workmanship that is a hallmark of Trump properties, hiding behind a pretty lobby.
Flora (New York)
@Liz Seriously! This feels like an ad for the property, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Flahooley (NYC)
@Liz 100% on board with you. But I'm comforted by the fact they have mold.
