There would be a lot more potential and it would be a lot more fun if Murphy's son were a CONSEREVATIVE commentator, not just another liberal.
Susan (Oregon)
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who is making this show happen. Grateful for the opportunity to see art in action by a group of creatively intelligent individuals coming together and sharing their gifts with millions of viewers eagerly awaiting Thursday night on CBS!
fwest (NC)
I'm thrilled to be able to watch these incredibly talented folks again. How wonderful to have a show including older women and men doing important work and discussing current topics - the comedy will give it all the more impact. Oh hooray!
JV (New York City)
Thank you Candace Bergen and Diane English! We need you again and more than ever!
Southern Gal (NY)
SO excited to see Ms English and Ms Bergen back on tv in a new series.. i would watch Bergen, Ford, et al read the phone book if scripted by Ms English. Looking forward to her unique take on the current political / technological / social issues. WELCOME BACK MURPHY BROWN!!! We need you!
martha hulbert (maine)
Since Murphy's time, many successful films have appeared featuring fine old broads. Begging, hoping for her to take on Rome, with her red robed, misogynic pedophiles.
Scott (California)
Isn't it amazing how people react to this 30 minute situation comedy? Accusations of liberal soap box ideals being rammed down viewer's throats? I have a suggestion for those whom are offended, don't watch.
European American (Midwest)
“…because of the election and because [of] the position [of] the press… there were so many reasons for this show to come back. This isn’t a money grab… a ‘let’s go out for one more swing at the fences.’ This was: We need to do this show.” “Let’s not forget: this is a comedy. Yes there’s some social commentary, but the idea here is to make people laugh.” Bit of a disconnect there, I would have said…
Victoria (Hollywood)
Looking forward to the watching but it reminds of how much I miss (especially now) Julia Sugarbaker & Designing Women.
Southern Gal (NY)
@Victoria i agree.. what they would have done with the current issues!
Ted A (Denver)
I named my Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Murphy as a nod to the Murphy Brown character. My dog that is female is smart, has a temperament of independence, is kind and very pretty. 20 somethings like my dog, but when they learn her name they are surprised because they think the name "Murphy" is a male name. When I explain my dog's name was inspired by the show, they are like "Murphy Brown who?" It seems hardly anybody from this generation ever saw the show. It will be very interesting to see if this reboot will resonate for them as it did for my generation. I hope it does. It will entertain and have some teachable moments; especially about the value of strong and free press.
Southern Gal (NY)
@Ted A Its a shame that due to the music rights MB can not be syndicated (well, it could but the rights expense would be prohibitive)
Carol McCracken (Salt Lake City, UT)
I have wanted for soooooooo long to have all of Murphy Brown on DVD and now I understand why we don't. :-( I still want it, though. And I am beyond excited for its return - STILL one of the best shows EVER on TV and I can hardly wait!
ERT (New York)
The first season of Murphy Brown was released on DVD. Unfortunately, it didn’t sell, and plans to release future seasons on DVD were scrapped.

Broadcast TV -- Desperate times call for desperate measures. Now I'm waiting for CBS to exhume Lucy so they can revive her show. Sid Caesar? Uncle Miltie?
kilika (Chicago)
It's going to be brilliant to see Murphy go after trump, the way FOX goes after Hillary and Democrats. She sure clobbered Quayle. Go Candice!
Theresa N (Washington DC)
I’ve been watching reruns on ME TV and enjoying them immensely! It was such a great show!!!!! I’m real interested in how they handle this reboot. Sorry to see that Jim Dial and Elden aren’t with us anymore.
McAdams (Cambridge UK)
@Theresa N Charles Kimbrough will be making cameo appearances as Jim Dial: https://tvline.com/2018/08/05/murphy-brown-revival-charles-kimbrough-ret...
JessiePearl (Tennessee)
Wishing the new Murphy Brown show cast, crew, and creator tremendous success!
Dave (St. Louis Mo)
Great, one more "entertainment" opportunity to have liberal politics and views rammed down my throat, no doubt with a healthy side-helping of deplorables/dregs-bashing. Even though I liked the first Murphy Brown, thanks anyway, I'll pass.
zigful26 (Los Angeles, CA)
@Dave Wow, sounds like you're going to force yourself to watch the show. Poor guy, maybe you can get some friends to remove you from your barcalounger.
Llewis (N Cal)
@Dave You do know that you can turn off this show and watch the Right wing shows like NRA TV, Fox, or any of the other Trump based pablum thatbis being shoved down our throats?
Maxie (Johnstown NY)
And that’s your choice.
Sparky (NYC)
I certainly understand why everyone involved would like to take another shot (and the paycheck that goes along with it) at the brass ring of a hit TV series. But almost all great and good TV is a product of its time. Can you imagine The Sopranos, Seinfeld or Cheers coming back? They wouldn't fit or work. I am sure they can make Murphy passably funny and relevant (this is CBS, a low bar if ever there was one). But there is something profoundly sad about bringing out the shows that worked once in a desperate hope they will possibly work just well enough to stay on the air. I think it's called creatively bankrupt.
Graham Massey (Seattle)
@Sparky Twin Peaks begs to differ with this argument.
FeministGrandpa (Home)
@Sparky *cough* Will and Grace *cough*
Next Conservatism (United States)
If there's a culture war, this is a Bob Hope USO show. But let's take this seriously for a second. If the hope is to change a single mind or advance a point of view, this isn't going to do it. It'll confirm every bias that the Deplorables are victims. They'll love hating it. They'll love using it.
PC (Colorado)
@Next Conservatism I don't really care. I just want to laugh again. And this time we don't have Dan Quayle.
Remember in November (A sanctuary of reason off the coast of Greater Trumpistan)
@Next Conservatism More importantly, along with large numbers of other activities quickly rising in our society, it will serve the important function of helping to drive the vermin back into the darkness under the rocks -- with the other Murdochs -- where they belong. You can't fix stupid, but to a degree you can prevent it from wandering around in traffic.
Mixiplix (Santa Monica)
Seriously, who cares at this point
FeministGrandpa (Home)
@Mixiplix - Obviously you do, or you wouldn't be reading this article.
PWR (Malverne)
The Times reviewer takes for granted that a Bannon type character can only be interviewed in order to be "cut down to size" or shunned entirely. A third option would be to ask tough probing questions, not to give the Bannon character a soapbox, but to reveal what he is about and to expose any potential contradictions. I miss TV interviewers like Jack Paar and Dick Cavett.
Jonathan Lloyd (Malibu)
Bold prediction: This show is DOA!
FeministGrandpa (Home)
@Jonathan Lloyd Bold prediction: you won't watch it. But that's OK. A bunch of smart people will.
MarathonRunner (US)
When a television show intentionally sets out to ridicule and make fun of the president, it shows a mean-spirited motive for returning to the airwaves. It's time for more understanding and tolerance and less an approach for trying to publically ridicule our president. Sorry Murphy, you're out of touch with the silent majority in our country.
FeministGrandpa (Home)
@MarathonRunner *cough* minority *cough*
Andy (Paris)
You're not silent at all but you're also definitely not a majority.
Maxie (Johnstown NY)
How do you know they are going to “make fun” of him. I think they will refer to a unprepared, dangerous, misogynistic, xenophobic racist in the White House. It’s our reality - nothing funny about it.
JM (East Coast)
I remember watching Murphy Brown with my mom as a 4th and 5th grader in the early 1990s. I loved that show because Murphy reminded me of my own mom: single, professional, and not afraid to buck traditions and champion women. Whenever we’ve seen Ms. Bergen in other roles over the years, we always say, “remember when she was Murphy?” I can’t wait for the reboot. I’m sure it will be great!
Ed L. (Syracuse)
I can hardly wait, and I look forward to the "rebooting" of other timely progressive sitcoms from the past: All In The Family, Maude, Julia, and Room 222.
alocksley (NYC)
Makes me glad I gave up basic cable. This show was always so full of itself, owing mainly to the two in the picture. But it was still a two-dimensional sitcom. Those days are over. There are better things to watch.
njglea (Seattle)
This is such great news - I can hardly wait to watch it. You Go, Candice et al! Many thanks to all the courageous women who were the first in the fight for equal rights for women and are once again stepping up to fight like hell for human and civil rights. You are simply priceless - and timeless!
Ed L. (Syracuse)
@njglea I hope the rebooted Murphy gets pregnant again, and a rebooted Dan Quayle comes back to hector her.
ERT (New York)
Rebooted Murphy is far too old to get pregnant.
Truthiness (New York)
Murphy feels like a pal to me. We both had our sons at the same time, and she helped me laugh through pregnancy..
kms (New Jersey)
I respectfully beg to differ with Ms English's observation about who's in the tent. I have always enjoyed Ms Bergen's work and regularly watched Murphy Brown, but I also like NCIS, Blue Bloods and Criminal Minds, even though I don't live in middle American and am definitely anti–Trump and pro–press. I'm looking forward to this season when I can enjoy all of the above.
esthermiriam (DC)
Yes, me, too — though “Criminal Minds” can be hardest to take: team is smart but quota of ugly attacks on women wears
Judy (Miami)
Can't wait to see the revolving door of Murphy's secretaries/assistants. So glad, you're back.
Valerie (Nevada)
Loved the original Murphy Brown. I am really looking forward to the series being updated to reflect the Trump administration and Trump's attack on freedom of speech. With Trump, there is no shortage of material available (unfortunately, for our country). Being 60 plus, I am excited to see the original cast once again. Finally, there is something to look forward to watching on TV.
Lori (Toronto)
Using humour to remind people of the importance of the press; poking fun at a man and administration that need it; characters and actors well over 50 who still have voices and attitudes: I'm here for this! (Advertisers, take note!!)
JHi (Los Angeles)
So many fun characters in the original. Could Eldin have had a son/daughter who returns to paint her house? I was sorry when they retired a recurring line Murphy shouted from inside the pub. It always made me laugh: Close the Door!!
sfdphd (San Francisco)
I'm looking forward to it.... Thanks for the reminder to put the premiere on my calendar...Luckily it's on a channel I can access and at a time I can watch....
Eugene (NYC)
Now, bring back TW3 - That Was The Week That Was. There's plenty of material for both. And perhaps Mr. District Attorney could move to the east coast and return as United States Attorney depicting the trials of you know who.
A. Gideon (Montclair, NJ)
Thanks to the author for the explanation about streaming rights. I've long wondered why i could not find this show available. I was concerned it was health related, as Murphy is the only show ever to make me laugh to the point of being unable to breath. I'm excited for its return. ...Andrew
Theresa N (Washington DC)
@A. Gideon It’s on Cox Cable “Me TV” Monday -Friday at 11p!!
A. Gideon (Montclair, NJ)
@Theresa N It's on some channel I receive via cable, but I've grown spoiled by the freedom of real streaming. A couple of episodes a week? Frustrating! The dvr helps, but only slowly. Thanks, though. ...Andrew
MarcAnthony (Philadelphia, Pa)
Some of the smartest, (and funniest)TV I’ve ever watched, this along with West Wing. Chasing after “heartland” viewership (deeply despise that overused moniker), is fool’s gold. They wouldn’t tune in for the most part as mentioned anyway. Especially when their hero will be bashed weekly. Good. Yes, I prefer my TV with a costal bent and am not ashamed to admit it. The last 40-50 years we have been force-fed a political, social and cultural diet that subsists on the idea that people of Flyoverville are more moral, trustworthy and are salt of the earth. Complete, all the way down to the checkered tablecloth events, chiclet-toothed politicians attend to continue selling the rubes more “coastal elite” snake oil in order to make them feel good about the poor choices they have made; instead of blaming those same charlatans who rob them blind of what should be every American’s right: universal healthcare, clean environment, robust consumer protection, free college education, equal pay, secure, dignified retirement, etc, etc. Can’t afford pie in the sky some’ll vomit? Exhibit A: The trillion dollar plus corporate tax cut sugar smack that seeped out of Congress recently. Priorities, you understand. Yeah, bring on Murphy Brown and let the howls from Middle America reverberate throughout the continent, I bet it won’t drown out the sobs of the separated immigrant families looking for their babies. Remember them?
JaneF (Denver)
@MarcAnthony I grew up in NYC, but have lived in "flyoverville" for almost 30 years. Many, if not most shows are about NYC and/or the east coast. Blue Bloods, CSI: NY, Law and Order, Scandal, Will and Grace, to name a few. Don't lump the entire country west of the Mississippi into the same category--there are diverse communities out here. In fact, Colorado, NM, Nevada all voted for Clinton--Pennsylvania went for Trump.
Kelly Yip (Paris, France)
I used to like her show, “Murphy Brown,” and was planning to watch it --but NOT after what she stated last month "Add Candice Bergen to the mix. She had defended Moonves, whom she's called a friend for decades, telling The New York Times late last month that “I would really hate to see Les go.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/10/business/media/leslie-moonves-cbs-har...
zigful26 (Los Angeles, CA)
@Kelly Yip Oh Yes Kelly! I think there should be harsh punishment for all women that say anything nice about an alleged harasser. Perhaps one year in a work camp.
BLB (Princeton, NJ)
Welcome back, Murphy Brown! I'll be watching as always, a show that is refreshing, relevant and funny! Thanks!
Doug (Asheville, NC)
The most important two questions are, will they get someone to replace Robert Pastorelli (Eldin), and will her apartment still be covered in painting tarps?
Terry Dailey (Mays Landing NJ)
Thank you. My husband has been asking that too.
Patty deVille (Tempe, AZ)
@Doug It would be lovely if an Eldin tarp is hang on a wall in her apartment like a mural and referenced once as a true art piece.
Walter McCarthy (Henderson, nv)
It can't be reality television, lets be honest when was the last time we saw a 72 year woman old get hired for the anchor 's chair?
God is Love (New York, NY)
@Walter McCarthy. The wonderful Judy Woodruff, lead anchor of the PBS News Hour, will be turning 72 in November.
Alan Snipes (Chicago)
@Walter McCarthy You'e never heard of Barbara Walters?
Acute Observer (Deep South)
Ever see PBS NewsHour?
LOST IN THOUGHT (NEWTOWN)
We've missed you Murphy, welcome back!
John Q Doe (Upnorth, Minnesota)
Regardless of ones political point of view it will be refreshing to have a show and cast the Baby Boomer generation can relate with. One can take just so many reruns of "Leave It To Beaver" and "Bonanza."
PJ reader (NJ)
Have been watching the Murphy Brown reruns on Antenna TV in Central Jersey for the past year. Now up to Season 8. Looking forward to the new series.
