As Mr. Halley says, the basic question is in finding something that is psychologically resonant to oneself. My life as an artist didn't start until middle age, and for many years everything I did was all over the map. I've come to realize that that type of exploration, psychological and artistic, is a necessary aspect of evolving as an artist and a person. In the last few years, I'm finally focusing more on the recurring themes, images and materials that seem to resonate with me, and I'm grateful that's finally happening. Maybe no one else can see how the same line painted in my 40's takes on a different and profound meaning for me in my mid-60's, but all that really matters is that I can.
