Having bought the stock years back, I consider the iPhones free.
DocSam (Bombay)
The world is going to see 5G technology in 6 months. Will the new super expensive iPhones have that? No!There you go chasing another new iphone!
James S Kennedy (PNW)
I enjoy reading the squeals of Apple haters. I love my iPhone and my iPad which I use to read the NYTimes no matter where I find myself.
Jay (New York)
My phone's specs are better than yours. My phone's screen is bigger than yours. I march to the beat of the loudest drummer whose drum is incidentally the best in the world and made of extremely rare and precious materials assembled through singularly innovative processes. The phone bathes my face in a ghoulish glow and the drumbeat meters out my faltering steps as I stumble about this darkling plain, swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, where ignorant armies clash by night.
Wisconsonian (Wisconsin)
Nice! I miss my Nokia except when I’m lost...
B. Sanders (Sydney, Australia)
@Jay Well written..!! Your last sentence ... I knew I had read it somewhere before.....thank you Google..! "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold 1822-1888 (I wonder what model of iPhone he used..!!..??)
Flo (pacific northwest)
I bought my first smartphone I guess four years ago, the iPhone 6 at $200.00 from my phone service provider. It was the most I paid for any phone since most were free before that. When they stopped offering that deal I stopped upgrading. I'll not pay nearly a thousand dollars for a phone! My phone still works great and I'll just wait until the "older" phones come down in price to upgrade. Or I'll go back to a basic phone. The companies made sure to get us addicted and now we have to struggle to have them.
Michael-in-Vegas (Las Vegas, NV)
@Flo Don't be fooled by the price your provider charged you. When you buy a phone from your provider, the payments are spread out over your contract (generally 2 years). So you actually paid $800+ for your phone, but only $200 up front. Always buy phones on the secondary market! You can get 2-year-old flagships (like your iPhone 6) for $200 on ebay today, rather than the $800 you paid for it over the past 2 years.
Chris (California)
The prices are outrageous! I'm still happy with my iPhone 5. I will move to a 6 when I start having problems. I usually buy my "outdated" iPhones on e-bay unlocked. No way am I spending $1000 on a phone.
Bun Mam (OAKLAND)
A blue phone! Now that's innovation.
Pdeadline (Houston)
Can All Things Tech explain why as technology advances smart phones go up in cost unlike TVs and computers that came down in cost?
James S Kennedy (PNW)
@Pdeadline The cameras keep getting better. I greatly enjoy my Apple products. I have several hundred books on my iPad.
ralphingotz (PA)
I've been using Apple products ever since the Apple IIE and the first Macintosh. I have had a few iPhones as well, and to my recollection there was a time when every year there was an announcement about new computer hardware of some kind. This year, nothing...it almost seems as though Apple has forsaken the Macintosh altogether. It's not like there is nothing that needs upgrading...The Mac Pro hasn't been refreshed for several years, likewise the Mac Mini. Also, the desktop iMac for us regular users hasn't seen anything new for awhile. Apple's market share for Macs has been declining slowly, but that may be reversed a little with some newer machines. I know their main Mac focus is on laptops, but there is a need for the larger screens as well. My Mid-2011 iMac is now too old to run Mojave...what next?
msf (NYC)
If Apple really were concerned about the environment they would off upgrades instead of creating a super-pile of electronic garbage. A mac user with an iPhone5 - that is perfectly adequate. Tim Cook, I want to see you save a developing country with the 100 million you made last year.
Ken McBride (Lynchburg, VA)
@msf Like America after Trump!
Jeff P (Washington)
Next, they'll be making them with a built in Juul.
Bill Kearns (Indiana)
I'm writing this on my iPad Pro as it is so much more convenient for me than my iPhone 8. Sadly, even at the age of 65 this month, I know I occasionally crave new tech items. My iPhone 7 was perfectly functional when I chose to swap it at Sprint for the 8. Of course, as the gods of gizmos continued laughing at me, many friends chose the large, brighter, longer battery-life, better-camera-options Android phones, and I wondered what Apple would do in response. I had forgotten about the annual roll-out of new products. Gee, the new phones sure are pretty, but with arthritic hands, more phone real estate to carry in a protective case might not make much sense. However, obviously with my upgrade from a 7 to the 8, my guide really was Forrest Gump. Literally, we'll see what happens.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@Bill Kearns - What you get with the new phones is a new screen that looks really cool until the oleophobic coating wears off, a bit faster than the older ones and new lightness in your wallet. I have a 6S which has NO payments, an earphone jack for the plethora of earpods I have, supports my airpods on the rare occasion I have them with me (with 6 sets of earpods they are always there) At 71 I do miss the thrill of opening up the great Apple packaging and spending a day trying to get the new phone set up like the old. But then no 2 years worth of monthly payments. I used to upgrade every 2 years and then there seemed like no good reason anymore. Apple has fallen behind in REAL innovation....just some of the Appleheads have yet to notice.
Dave P. (East Tawas, MI.)
Boy, I always wonder why some people read a story like this. Is it just to complain or tell people that they don’t need a certain phone or why they buy it? I love Apple iPhones. I have the iPhone X and love it. I pay a monthly payment for it so it isn’t like I’m dropping a thousand dollars at once. I buy it because I love the design, the iOS system, speed, size, and reliability. I don’t care for the cheap, plastic, unreliable Android devices. I use it a lot, for business and pleasure, not because I am trying to impress anyone. And for all the negativity, Apple must be doing something right when they bring in billions of dollars in profits. A phone, like just about everything else, can reflect a persons personality and personal choice. If someone wants a larger, classier, more expensive phone that is their choice. It doesn’t make the a bad person, someone getting played by a company, wasteful, narcissistic, or anything else. Some of you people really need to get over yourselves. If you like it, buy it. If you don’t, then don’t buy it. Stop trying to judge someone by what kind of phone they want or have, or telling someone what they need and don’t need.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@Dave P. 6s - NO payments and a headphone jack.... think about that every month when the email reminder comes in for 24 months...
Michael-in-Vegas (Las Vegas, NV)
@Dave P. There are always people who read articles like this just so they can heap praise on a famously high-margin company that charges them a premium for the same thing they could get far cheaper. Thanks for providing balance to the nay-sayers, while adding nothing of value to the article or the conversation.
Leslie (California)
Not sure, watching the video of Apple's presentations and audience reactions if this was a Trump rally or a marketing ploy. There's a reason it's held at their auditorium, next to their work campus.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@Leslie - Actually like a Trump rally Appleheads will cheer at virtually anything Cook says. The really forgot why they (we) became Appleheads in the beginning. They no longer question.....sad.
Leslie (California)
Talk to your doctor before buying Apple's "heart" watch - may not want you becoming preoccupied with all the normal variations you will think are dangerous, will not appreciate getting many false alarms. Oh, surprise - you'll need to buy Apple's phone too and subscribe - annual fee - to have your heart tracings stored and analyzed. Now, if Apple could only redirect device prices and functions toward healthier financial states . . . we'd all be better off.
Becky (SF, CA)
Of course, as usual, I upgraded to the last version 3 last month. Don’t know if I’m not an early adopter or I just learned from years in tech to not want the latest greatest until proven out. My requirement for my watch was to use for master swims and previous version wasn’t waterproof. I do highly recommend these watches. Until this water resistant version I had no idea how hard my swim workouts are and how much I was exercising my heart. I will probably upgrade again in couple of years and the recycle credit helps justify.
Niall Firinne (London)
Clearly iPhone buyers are not really consumers of telephones or technology. They are buyers of fashion. You could put an Apple logo on Maxwell Smart's shoe and some people would pay a fortune for it.
David Illig (Gambrills, MD)
@Niall Firinne Dead wrong. I use iPhone X for scientific photography and other science tasks.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@David Illig - I would think that for science you could afford and require a REAL camera.....
James S Kennedy (PNW)
@Barry Fitzgerald The best camera is the one you have with you, and that is currently my iPhone 8+. I also own about 2 dozen Leica cameras, over 50 Nikons, but only have them when photography is is my main mission.
Alex (Indiana)
Now that the new iPhones are unveiled, and their prices revealed, Appleholics across the nation have a choice to make: feed your family or buy a new iPhone. For many, the choice will be easy. After all, one can always get a new family. But an iPhone is forever. OK, maybe not forever. But forever until new, faster, brighter, thinner models are released a year from now.
Dave P. (East Tawas, MI.)
@Alex...As a “Appleholic” (I like that one) myself, I will probably get the new iPhone XS Max. But it isn’t a choice of buying the phone or feeding my family, as with just about every service provider offering monthly payments for the phone. I trade in my iPhone X to Verizon and get the new version and still pay a reasonable monthly amount that does not break the bank. It will be another dollar or two a month.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@Alex - The choice is really to buy ANOTHER toy that I don't have instead of another iPhone that I already DO have. My 6S ALSO comes with an earphone jack! $1k is the start of buying another non-iPhone toy. No iPhone envy needed...
B. Sanders (Sydney, Australia)
@Alex Hi Alex .... Like previous Reply (Dave R) ... I like the "Appleholic" line - good one.! Maybe better than my usual "Apple Taliban" line. :-) But I am a bit confused about whether the last paragraph ... "But forever until new, faster, brighter, thinner models are released ..." Are you thinking about iPhones -- or family here..??? :-)) I'm sure Apple & Verizon would think updating your family for a "faster, brighter, thinner" model - every two years - would be a Very Good idea..!! (If there was a buck in it for them..!!) :-)) PS I'm still using my 8 year old iPhone 4. Yepp it's still going great..!! Thanks for asking.!! Lasted thru TWO marriages. So far..!! :-)) Have a great day.!!
Bill (Cambridge, MA)
The hyperbole from Apple each year has numbed my enthusiasm for these events. As many have acknowledged here, larger form factor is not always an improvement. I would have preferred Apple apply their new edge to edge screen design on the SE size and save their revolutionary claims for the day when my battery actually lasts 24hrs. The high price of $1K models still offers the same iOS experience as any extant model.
Loomy (Australia)
So bigger screens then beget bigger income from increased revenue shares Apple gets whenever somebody gets a Netflix or HBO subscription for their mobile phone. Are you kidding? People are taking out video and content subscriptions because they are watching movies etc on their mobile phones and watching even more now that screens are getting bigger...some now even more than 6 inches large ! Anybody who watches TV or movies through their mobile phone is having themselves on...watching on an iPad or Laptop I can understand , but your mobile phone? Seriously...people need to look outside the box. Or a bigger one.
Olenska (New England)
I like my flip phone. It only cost $10. I put $15 worth of minutes on it every month that I use to make calls and to text. It has social utility as well - I don't stare fixedly at it as I weave down the street, or ignore my friends in restaurants while I check it obsessively. Since I don't have a bizarre need to photograph my meals or document every waking moment of my life for 90 million Instagram addicts, I live a peaceful life. If you are willing to spend $1100 for the latest iPhone, I suggest that you are better off using the money to pay for a good therapist.
John Christoff (North Carolina)
People with big phones held up to their ears (no matter what brand) look stupid. Those carrying around and texting or playing games with big phones in their hands are dangerous (to themselves and others). I find it rather odd that many women in tight pants with hip pockets carry their big phones around in those pockets. I guess the next trend with be jeans and pants with an extra large pocket for those enormous phone. Might want of invest in some clothing industry stock as the fashion conscience replace their pants along with their phones. Sorry but I am not going to pay a $1000 or more for an oversized piece of hardware that has become cumbersome to carry around and to use. When Apple introduced the iPhone it was unique and with iPhone 4 and 5 it was useful and essential. But now they are just gaudy and ho hum. You might as well be carrying around your laptop. Of course they will sell -- there's a sucker born every minute.
Cemal Ekin (Warwick, RI)
Technology has become one of the biggest addictions that nobody wants to acknowledge, not the users and certainly not the sellers. At some point, the proverbial brick wall will be waiting for them all with open arms. Beware! Be honest. And, acknowledge this addiction. No, you don't need a new phone every two years or less! (OK, start the flame throwers.)
rixax (Toronto)
I suppose most people that buy this watch will want to see their doctor as the excitement of having a new toy will temporarily increase then heart rate.
B. Sanders (Sydney, Australia)
@rixax Hi rixax, Love your thinking.! Maybe next year's Apple Watch should have a built-in Defibrillator..!! To save your life from the heart attack -- when you get over excited -- opening your brand new 2019 iPhone. Should we take the concept to Apple..???
Thorsten Fleiter (Baltimore)
THE contemporary american product icon....the iPhone....contains parts made around the globe and is assembled in China. It is bascially the antithesis of the ecology of the current administration and nevertheless made by the highest valued company. Protectionists certainly dislike their success but love Apple’s money and rising value....and the President is using two of those “non- patriotic” iphones. Just another “mulligan”, right?
John H. (New York, NY)
To commentators wondering why the Times runs a story about the unveiling of another round of Apple products, it's because people are interested. You may not approve, but it's news. And by the way, what are you doing reading the story, if you think it's not worth running in the first place?
John Doe (NYC)
I won't buy another iPhone until mine dies - or they bring back the old earbud jack.
Barry Fitzgerald (Los Gatos, Ca.)
@John Doe - Amen on that! Ports over dongles and adapters!
LEFisher (USA)
The new iPhone X & iPhone X-S cover pic looks exactly like the X-ray of a female mammogram. Google "mammogram images", & compare for yourselves. No female @ Apple saw this nearly exact match?! Yuk!
stan continople (brooklyn)
I don't care how well the economy is doing for a select few. Even they've got to realize, at some point, they're being played by Apple. If you're associating with people who are judging you solely on the model of your iPhone, you better find some new, fully dimensional, friends and if you are judging yourself on the currency of your iPhone, then you should seek psychiatric help. It's a chunk of glass and metal put together by slave labor, and that's how you're calculating your self worth? I wonder how many of these fanboys and gals ever had an original thought, one that wasn't implanted in their brains by a "brand"?
Still Waiting for a NBA Title (SL, UT)
@stan continople Or just maybe, and bear with me now, just maybe people like their products irrespective to what others may or may not think.
Awake (New England)
Apple products are fine, but not worth the premium paid. But people do buy Rolex and other premium brands, part of the mating ritual, a way to display our values to others. What ever you do, don't question their devotion to Apple they have invested a lot of their personal capital.
Paul (Chicago)
I’m hoping Apple releases a 60” iPhone next year We always need bigger. Because that’s better
Cemal Ekin (Warwick, RI)
@Paul, it's in the works and it also makes nice toasts at programmable times, put it on the floor and it will vacuum the floors including under the couch, put it on the kitchen counter and turn on the electromagnetic heater, on one of its edge is a nice shaver, the other side is a little coarser for your dog, ... Oh, by the way you will need a Nokia to make phone calls when it is under the couch!
Judith Yates (Seattle)
Wait wait... what are you saying? In the penultimate paragraph you seem to say *not* to use the watch to monitor A-fib, but a few paragraphs above it is described as useful for that application.
Richard Mclaughlin (Altoona PA)
I have an LG slide phone. It's about three quarters of the way down on their discontinued phones page. I can live between 'hot spots' without seeing data on my sim card less Samsung Note 6. Apple doesn't know me . They're not tracking my data, or my whereabouts. Don't wait in lines, or waste my money on redundant tech. How do I survive?
MistyBreeze (NYC)
Apple keeps making a ton of money on the backs of addicts. Who else would pay $1000 for a cell phone?
Stuart (Bangkok Thailand)
I prefer to hear about Lisa Brennan-Jobs in her poignant book “Small Fry”. In this consumerist age, we’ve left people and relationships behind. Her struggle with identity through her father’s obvious failings as a reckless parent, colour my view of his company, which encourages us to peer into screens and tablets, over proper, old-fashioned relationships and parenting. What an ironic legacy Jobs left us.
Michael DeHart (Washington, DC)
@Stuart Blaming Jobs for any failings we each may, or may not, have seems odd. Buy the phone you like, at the price you can afford, for the reasons that make sense to you, and leave the blame game behind. Please.
Mello Char (Here)
I love how everything is about numbers. How many people did this or that. Like movies. Value judgments according to the numbers. Sick society if you ask me. The art market is the same. Doesn't media play into this? Do articles on small things, on what some people are doing against the crowd. Don't be a sucker for numbers.
Chris (Texas)
What an appropriately named Phone. I pronounce XS as excess. This device is completely excessive in form, function and price. I'm so glad the "greatest" minds in Tech choose to create devices of consumption instead of tackling the real issues of Climate Change or Income calcification/inequality. We're doomed.
LocalDog (North Florida)
I'm one of the few left who does not own a cell phone, or as I like to refer to them, a pocket-sized computer. I wonder if Apple would consider adding a phone function to the iPad? I might join the 21st century if they would.
David Illig (Gambrills, MD)
@LocalDog The iPad can receive phone calls. iPhone hands them off. Very handy—for me, at least.
Terry G (Del Mar, CA)
I bought 2 iPhone SE’s in advance of this announcement: regular headphone jack, lightweight, fits in pockets. Best phone ever.
Esskay (San Francisco)
Why is this front page “news”? It’s not earth-shattering innovation that will help anyone. It’s a new phone for crying out loud!
Economy Biscuits (Okay Corral, aka America)
Or...you could buy a Moto G (Android) on Amazon Prime for about $200.00 and use the significant savings to buy better beer. Don't believe me, read the reviews of the Moto G on Amazon. Spending a grand on a cell phone in 2018 is absurd-such a waste. Why send more money to Apple?!
David Illig (Gambrills, MD)
@Economy Biscuits Yes, I could do that. I could also drive a Yugo instead of my Lexus. I hope that you don’t mind too much that I decide for myself how to spend my money.
Economy Biscuits (Okay Corral, aka America)
@David Illig To think of a Moto G as a Yugo compared to the I-Phone/Lexus is way wide of the mark. Apples to oranges. But nice try.
Alex K (Melbourne Australia)
The battery on my IPhone 5 is failing giving me incentive to upgrade to a hopefully seriously discounted X model - perhaps. The downside of any investment in an IPhone model current or just released is that NONE are 5G ready. In 2 years time when 5G is rolled out (note the technology is being tested in Japan - no eye sore towers on the landscape, the infrastructure is buried in the pavement - check it out folks, the new technology will make your expensive phones obsolete because even WiFi will be a different standard which the IPhone does not support.
Tp (maine)
My iphone5 battery failed and Apple gave me a new iphone 5. Go to your Apple store. The 5 is a great, elegant phone.
Wisconsonian (Wisconsin)
Zero interest in a phone that doesn’t fit in my pocket. I’m holding with my 5s until sanity returns.
Blank (Venice)
@Wisconsonian Always said the same thing until I got the 8 Plus and shared the pictures and videos with family and friends.
Plennie Wingo (Weinfelden, Switzerland)
This is innovation? Well, you really can't expect much from a company that can only think to buy back its shares with its tax windfall.
Jean Louis Lonne (France)
I've had Apple products for over 20 years. I had a MAC when everyone else in my company had PCs. My boss used to complain how expensive it was (even if I paid it personally); yet with every sales meeting I'd see new PCs among my colleagues. I kept my Air MAC ten years; my office MAC is 15 now. I have to admit I went from iPhone 5 to 6 out of greed, my 5 was just fine. My 6 is going strong after 4 years, with a new battery under the Apple program. You just have to be an adult and get a new product only when needed. Oh, and the other reason I have Apple products: they are easy to use for the not so tech smarties like us oldies.
Wisconsonian (Wisconsin)
Less likely to be hacked or pick up spy/malware... though that is changing. Maybe windows stuff was always running down as it collected viruses and spy/malware, despite my “best practices”
Rob Campbell (Western Mass.)
Personally, I've been hanging out for a real small iPhone, something with no screen or just the numbers, something that can SLIP into my breast pocket about the same shape and size as the remote for Apple TV. I don't need internet on it, really all I need is a real good modern reliable phone- nobody makes one Guess I'll just have to continue with the old dead-battery flip-phone and charger (still somewhere in the car)- for emergencies Lose the smart phone and enjoy life!
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
Not sure this actually occurred but Nokia was bringing back an older phone that wasn't a flip. Should be soon if it's still planning to do this.
E. T. (San Mateo, CA)
This article does not say the whole truth. The price range is $749 to $1499. Why can't you mention that the upper level price is 1.5 Grand which is very pricey for a phone?
Blank (Venice)
@E. T. $1.449 Plus Tax Plus AppleCare for the Top-o-da-Line is around $1,900 here in California. I’m getting one ASAP.
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
Plus taxes. Very expensive for a device that will be outdated in 2-3 yrs. My 6s won't be able to handle the latest software. Got it in July 2016. That makes it mighty expensive! Their phones were handling the OS updates longer, but not now. Plus, lacking Home Button, Headphone jack, and xi charging "plate". Ugh.
E. T. (San Mateo, CA)
Apple will release a special version of the phone in a quarter and will name it iPhone SE X.
William P (Germany)
@E. T....That's the whole logo in a nutshell! An apple that Adam and Eve bit into to start the world revolution! That's not in a handbook or an afficial company history, but that's it, that's the truth!
Mark (Mendham, NJ)
My 6plus is fours years old. It has been a GREAT phone. Was hoping a larger version of the X would be unveiled today and my hope has become reality. Here’s to Excess! Apple knows what they are doing. Thank God somebody does.
Jay (New York)
iPhone Excess eh? Maybe it's time they invented the iPhone Walden Pond. It would tender a simple connection to the sublime. Wonder what percentage of people who shell out a grand for these things have ever read Thoreau's old chestnut. Living deliberately indeed.
mlb4ever (New York)
I always thought Apple products were a bit pricy until I bought an iPod Nano, it was sleek and well made and I liked it. Then my company issued me the iPhone 5. When my iPhone rang in the basement radiology department, lined with lead walls, one of the techs asked what carrier I was using. I said it's not the carrier, I only started getting service down here with my iPhone.
Peter S (Western Canada)
WIll I buy one when they can actually perform heart surgery? Actually, as a leading cause of death, any wearable device that can give people an early warning against a lethal of life damaging coronary is a good thing. A very good thing indeed.
Bruce (Spokane WA)
I was never able to navigate the Apple operating system in any of its incarnations, ever since trying to use a Macintosh desktop back in the early 2000s. Wrong kind of brain, I guess. Oh well. Using Windows and Android products has saved me a lot of hassle (and money) over the years, and I've been able to figure out how to do anything I need to do. (Also my 6.3" x 3" phone is as big as my hands and pockets can manage, so I'm not tempted by bigger ones.) I don't hate Apple, I'm just not a groupie.
Jay (New York)
There is a disturbing Gil Amelio-like swerve that Apple is on in their Jobs-less era. Sadly, Steve can't come back to rescue them this time. He is, however, smiling (via FaceTime ESP) that I'm writing this on my wonderful, perfectly functional, and seductively compact iPhone 5 that he poured his genius into. You know, the Wikipedia app still actually works just well enough on it to let me look up the Law of Diminishing Returns, while its panoramic camera captures a remarkable swath of people marching zombie-like toward shiny new objects. Who is Big Brother in the 1984 scenario now?
Matthew (New Jersey)
@Jay Who is Big Brother in the 1984 scenario now? Trump. Abetted by Zuckerberg, Twitter and Google and Russia. Put in whatever order that you prefer. Apple is a bit player, as is every other Android manufacturer.
Martin (New York)
It's amazing to me how we've come, over the course of my lifetime, to accept advertisements as news stories. That seems like a much bigger change than any technological innovation.
mc (New York)
Everything I own (electronically) is an Apple product. But yet again, I see no need to upgrade my phone. I realize I'm in the minority, but I--and a number of my friends--want something smaller, with a headphone jack and a home button. Which means I'm sticking with my 6s for as long as I can keep it going. If they update the SE, I'd be willing to go smaller to keep what I like, rather than larger phones that eliminate much of what I find useful, with much higher price tags. It's a shame, but my next phone likely won't be an Apple, and I'm loyal to the brand.
Terezinha (San Francsico,CA)
@mc If you want something smaller you might like the AppleWatch 3. It does everything your Iphone does, and does not have to be connected any longer to your iPhone or WiFi when you use it. In fairness you have to have an iPhone to be able to download apps to the Watch. I get messages, email, talk on the phone, call Uber or check on the Muni bus and yes even check my pulse on this great device. (I do feel a bit weird talking into my wrist, though!) It cost me $400 and well worth it. And no, I am not an Apple employee, just a longtime Apple user.
Randy Buist (Grand Rapids, MI)
@mc I've been an iphone user since the iPhone3... but my son has a phone for less half the price of my X, and it has better service... and a better camera... and better reception...
RSSF (San Francisco)
From $449 to over $1,000 is an amazing price range. This will work with most people's budgets, and Apple will sell a boatload of these. Actual upgrade cost is lower, as you can sell your two-year old iPhone for still decent money -- something you can't say for Samsung phones.
Stan (Mansfield, OH)
Every Apple article invariably brings about the complainers, who apparently don't use Apple products at all but are experts about them. Well, here's a comment from someone who appreciates what Apple has done and how it got to this point. I've been using Apple products since I got my Apple IIGS in 1987. Yes, the company has its faults but throughout its history it has made elegant products that get the job done in an easy way. I do agree the products are expensive relative to the competition, but Apple positions itself as a luxury/premium product. Why is it no one ever complains about the new Lexus models, saying "my Chevy does this at half the price?", yet that's all you hear about Apple. I have a Macbook Pro, iPad Air, iPhone 8 and love how everything integrates flawlessly. I also love Mac OS and wouldn't switch to Windows no matter the cost. I was waiting for the EKG feature to come out before I purchasing the watch and now I will. Bravo Apple!
Terezinha (San Francsico,CA)
@Stan You said it well. I too have been an Apple user since day 1 ... and that included a NeXT machine also. I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad, an IPhone 7 and an AppleWatch3 which all interact flawlessly. Nuff said.
Eric (New York)
The biggest benefit of Apple and Samsung coming out with new phones every year is the older (and perfectly good) phones come down in price. Much cheaper to replace a broken iPhone 6S with the same model than buy a new XS. Verizon replaced my Galaxy S6 with a refurbished S8 for $150. (Best upgrade ever.) I can no longer afford to upgrade every 2 years, don't need to, don't want to. Needing the latest gadget is an expensive addiction (but there is help).
Elsa A. (California)
“As Apple has made its phones larger and faster, it is also charging more for them. The company said the new iPhones would start at $750, $1,000 and $1,100. The starting prices last year were $700, $800 and $1,000.” This statement is misleading. The phone that costs $750 this year is most similar to the phone that cost $800 last year but with a lot of the advanced technology that’s in the $1000/1100 phones. The phone that costs $1000 this year is most similar to the phone that cost $1000 last year but with many advances in technology. The phone that costs $1100 is most similar to the one that costs $1000 but is bigger (sort of like the difference between the 8 and 8 ). The $700 phone didn’t suddenly become $750, the $800 phone didn’t suddenly become $1000, and the $1000 phone didn’t suddenly become $1100.
Sam Kanter (NYC)
At this point, someone needs to figure out how to stop people from walking around like zombies looking at their phones. It's a health hazard, and needs to be addressed for future generations. The last thing we need is new and bigger phones that do nothing new.
Sam Kanter (NYC)
Yawn. Is anyone really excited by new phones or Apple products any more? How many different sizes of devices do we really need? Small iPad and large iPhone are the same size. Boring.
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
The larger phones are tons easier on my eyes. I'm sure I'm not alone. I'd love to have the new Note! I had the 2nd one & loved it! The S pen and size, and with Sprint having a 2/1 offer, I'm very tempted. I'll have to see how well my 6s works after the new OS is released. I do think it will be okay for at least a year, hopefully longer. They do have financing and turn in your old phone,( at a horrendously low price), and there's another program that I don't know the details on anymore, that allows u to upgrade yearly. If I had an iPad w/ Cellular, I'd get the old but new Nokia. Loved their phones! Great connections, that allowed a person to whisper and still be heard! Durable. Could easily wear on my belt too! I miss those phones. The newer & bigger phones, allow me to NOT have a computer. Smartphones are pocket or purse phones/computers.
Josh Hill (New London)
It will be interesting and a bit sad to see how long Apple can go on selling ho-hum products at ever higher prices. When Steve Jobs was alive, the release of a new Apple product was a genuine event. Now it's just wait, Android phones have had this for five years now at half the price. It's painful to see other companies run with new technologies like personal digital assistants that under Jobs would have been Apple's. Meanwhile, I'll be waiting eagerly for the release of my next new phone -- a Pixel 3.
Ben Parkins (Virginia)
@Josh Hill Are you kidding me? Apple was the first major tech company to introduce a personal digital assistant. Siri, anyone?
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
Does the Pixel 3 work with a pen, similar to the new Note? I've had the first iPhone, then iPhone 4, then the 6s . My Note was my favorite hands down. They were the first with a large screen and the S pen is a blast! I've known people w/ the Pixel, 1 & 2. They LOVED it! I was most impressed by it. It's definitely a phone I'd strongly consider.
David McCormick (Anchorage)
My trusty SE does everything I'll ever want a smartphone to do, at the size and price point I want. Apple's abandoning those of us who value compactness and affordability will make me, for one, feel no qualms about abandoning Apple for the Aftermarket.
Bruce (Spokane WA)
I dunno, I think "iPhone excess" is a pretty apt pronunciation.
Liberty Apples (Providence)
Look children, an even bigger screen to stare at as the world goes by. Don’t stay up too late. Daddy and I are having dinner with the neighbors. Can’t wait to get perfect table for four, spending the night staring at our phones in silence. Remember kids, apps are the new gospels. (Emoji)
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
Well at least they aren't straining their eyes as much if the screens remained like the first. I'm 60, but I wound up with double vision and lights flashing during a night of reading on my iPhone 1 & 4. One was a house wifi device. Since moving to larger screens, this rarely happens. Eye strain isn't noticeable, until your vision gets wacky. My iPhone 4 is going to be turned into a music device. That's if I ever get it back from my son. I left it in his or his gf's car last July and they both have new iPhones and don't need or want it. I've begun the hated NAG. They have told me repeatedly that they have it. I believe them. One's car is very messy and the other's car, my son's, is spotless in & out: however; he forgets everything. He thinks he doesn't need any Ritalin anymore. Personally, I'm sure he's got that wrong! His memory is AWFUL, no matter the subject! That was the first thing that was noticed in Pre-K! He was worked up by a Neuropsychiatric Dr! Which was highly recommended to be done at the time. 1994. Everything the Dr predicted to occur as he aged...happened. My son has never seen the report. Now I'm going to go & drool over the new Pixel 3 and the new Note 9. I just remembered, Samsung phones allow a person to pack spare batteries!! That's huge in & of itself! 1 Terabyte expandable memory ready too!
ERP (Bellows Falls, VT)
I'm overjoyed that we will get heart monitoring in our new Apple Watch. Next year's model should be able to do MRI and PET scans.
Liberty Apples (Providence)

The Poet McTeagle (California)
iPhone XS? How do I pronounce that? "Excess", honey. "Excess".
Scotty Dont (Pty)
I absolutely love my Huawei last years model phone. The camera is unbelievable and the price???... $300 out the door.
catherine (NYC)
I'm a tech fan but you will have to pry my iphone 5 SE from my cold, dead hands before I upgrade
SridharC (New York)
XS means excess not extra small
crimhead (Minneapolis MN)
...plus I bought another 150 shares of AAPL stock after the event, while it was down...
Tp (maine)
I still regret not buying it when it was at $1
37Rubydog (NYC)
So the new iPhone XS (yup worst moniker alongside the original thoughts about the iPad...but we grew up)....costs MORE than my macAir laptop? Just tell me what and when I might see a new laptop....mine is 6 years old - and I don't want to lug a MacPro or get one of those weird baby MacBooks. Give me lightweight - good keyboard (not the new one) and moderate performance....at less than an iPhoneXS
lowereastside (NYC)
As politically incorrect as this is - it must be said: Clothes make the man! Philip Schiller looks like an unprofessional, cheaply-dressed poser! He looks uncomfortable, and his sartorial disaster is, at this point, bizarre and embarrassing! (The irony of him standing beneath a poster of a $1000 phone is priceless). How are we supposed to not be distracted by a man dressed as if he's headed out to roast wienies in his backyard? Go buy a suit would you please?!
B. Sanders (Sydney, Australia)
@lowereastside I DID enjoy the irony to..!! Especially given Apple is currently the biggest and most profitable corporation in the world. But perhaps he would say .... "Wasn't in the contract.!" If you want me to "dress for success" etc etc. Then I need a pay-rise..!! (Or though ... I would VERY much doubt that would be true.) Have a good day. Or tho
Andy Rogers (Austin, TX)
Doesn't Apple still make computers?
Terezinha (San Francsico,CA)
@Andy Rogers Yes, these are all computers, just more compact.
Matthew (Nj)
Thumbs will evolve, so relax.
Scott (Seattle)
I wish someone would take the minimalist approach and make a smaller, leaner, phone. These new iPhones are getting to be like lugging and old Kaypro "portable" around. Are you happy to see me or is that just and iPhone in your pocket?
B. Sanders (Sydney, Australia)
@Scott I guess that today's reply to that famous old line would be ..... "It's an iPhone..!! But would you PLEASE call me..!!" (The iPhone vibrates -- when I get an in-coming call) And then I will -also- be pleased to see you..!! ????
Ensign (U.S.)
Yawn. Breathless news of yet another $1,000 iPhone is about as meaningful as a Trump tweet.
Josh Wilson (Osaka)
Apple is focusing on “health” with the watch because, frankly, for the past three years it hasn’t been much good for anything else.
Terezinha (San Francsico,CA)
@Josh Wilson Not so. The AppleWatch 3 is my go-to phone when I am out and about and don't want to lug an IPhone around. Unlike older models it no longer has to be linked to the IPhone when using it, and it does not need WiFi. On it I can make and receive calls, check email and messages, call Uber or Lyft or check Muni runs and so much more. My guess is you haven't upgraded to a 3. Try it and you might like it.
Charles (NY)
So what? You give your $ to Apple so they in turn can give it to China to make more phones. Apple has more than enough $. Give your money to people or organizations that can help those less fortunate. Who do not care about a phone. But need food shelter medical care. These are the important and necessary things to donate your money to.Not line the already rich pockets of Apple.
Gin Olson RN BSN (E. Windsor, CT)
You hit the Apple flat! I've always hated the FACT that they made every single phone at their Foxconn facility in China. The Chinese allow child labor for crying out loud! On top of that, the USA recently is worried about cyber attacks from China. Although, they don't need to do that. All of our electronics and too many other products are made there. They don't need to steal, we are handing them our technology: with every product made there! China supposedly and suddenly has the World's largest Naval fleet. A war against China, would be asinine. No matter the size of their Navy. They have at least a Billion people ready to fight. We only have our huge Corporations to thank for this. The Chinese bought property like crazy during 2007/8-2017. There's been a crackdown re: this. However; they practically OWN us. This is something we should all consider when making purchases. Especially Apple products! They are one of the top 10 richest companies in the World. They can bring the factories HOME, with their big tax break & new Extra $$$ phones!
Just Me (USA)
Four writers put this article together. And it shows. No flair, too much banality, and honestly the photos tell a much better story.
Jonathan (Boston)
The lack of Apple’s sense of irony in using a homophone for “excess” in naming a $1000 smart phone is very amusing.
Louise (USA)
But don't think about the environmental cost of changing out your phone every year; the e-waste, the mining of precious metals, the slave Chinese labor making the your beloved product, the obscene Apple profits that are going NOWHERE to make the world more equitable... I could go on and on, you get the idea...
Stan (Mansfield, OH)
@Louise It is not a corporation's duty to make the world a more equitable place. A corporation's duty is to make profits for its shareholders.
Matthew (New Jersey)
@Stan Well, yeah, it is Stan, and it's also Louise's duty to apply her logic to all aspects of production and consumption, not just Apple.
Bjh (Berkeley)
Healthiest thing you can do for yourself is not buy an Apple Watch.
Bun Mam (OAKLAND)
Still waiting for that notch to go away. Hopefully my trusty 6S will last until that happens.
Big Daddy (Phoenix)
Really, when does it all stop?
AN (Austin, TX)
@Big Daddy I'm not sure, maybe the same time as when car manufacturers stop coming out with new models.
Daphne (East Coast)
Always funny to read all the Apple hate. You'd think Trump was the CEO. No one is twisting your arm to buy an Apple product. Apple does have a way of withholding some features from the "lower end" to entice you to move up the line. Never the less I prefer their products and OSs. I have a 6s Plus which will do me fine for another year but I may take a look at these.
Beatrice (Bethesda, MD)
I have been using iPhone 4s in the last seven years. I keep iOS 7 to keep it running at a decent speed. But now some key apps that I use no longer support iOS 7. I plan to use my next iphone for another 7 years, Xr or small 8? I wonder if Xr stretch worth that extra $ 150 than 8.
Ensign (U.S.)
Yawn. Why doesn’t Apple use its hundreds of billions of cash to make something useful instead of slightly improving its current models and slapping a $1,100 price sticker on it?
findOut (PA)
I don't have a smartphone and have no use for one. But I am saddened by the reality of living in a world populated by people sticking to their faces. Glad I am an introvert..
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Is there a more avaricious company out there than Apple? 6.5 inch screen? Might as well be talking into an iPad.
Stan (Mansfield, OH)
@MIKEinNYC I'd rather Apple be avaricious than on the verge of insolvency like it was circa 1997.
Judith Stern (Philadelphia)
I've always used Apple products, primarily because of their ease of use. However, there are annoyances - like being unable to remove apps in which I have no interest. That would simplify my phone and free up space. And, I would like preferences and settings to be less complicated.
Charles (New York)
@Judith Stern "like being unable to remove apps in which I have no interest".... Other than using a "rooted" phone there is not much of a way to avoid this. I have a Samsung Galaxy. Most of the problem lies with the demands of the carriers and, in my case, the Google Android system.
Aristotle Gluteus Maximus (Louisiana)
I gave up on Apple. I have two but they break too easily which Apple undoubtedly makes money from considering the repair prices. I bought a Sonim mil spec. industrial grade that's water proof and can withstand a drop into the toilet or 6.5 feet onto concrete. Still cheaper than Apple even with the extra, expensive, cradle charger. The battery will last for days. I can call 911 with the press of a single button or program it to check my email or snap a photo. And it has a three year warranty, including accidental damage.
Sheldon Burke (Manhattan)
All current iPhone models have a very short battery life. The feature most needed in new iPhones is much longer battery life.
RBR (Santa Cruz, CA)
I was extremely reluctant years ago to get an IPhone. I simply love my device, among many other gadgets, is the most useful, I ever had. Thank you so much Apple for giving us the IPhones.
Ben Fiedler (Denver, CO)
Here's why this is an important story: It's a serious story about products that impact US and global society in a profound way every single day. From the most valuable company on Earth. I'm writing on my iPhone and do half my daily work on it. I want to know what's different or interesting about the new models. The Times article is the best written out there that I've read.
Frederick Kiel (Jomtien, Thailand)
@Ben FiedlerYou're correct. In an unreported part of Elon Musk's now infamous pot-smoking talk with Joe Rogan last week, they discussed AI extensively. Musk contended that smart phones have already begun the conversion of humans to cyborgs, saying that a person with a smart phone in hand, able to access all world information instantly, was far more powerful than a "normal" human and the wave of the future.
Kitty (Illinois)
@Frederick Kiel I'm torn on this. It seems like our path to understanding the worldly information is just as long, and the critical thinking abilities are taking a pretty big hit along the way. It's a dilemma.
@Ben Fiedler ". I'm writing on my iPhone and do half my daily work on it." Yes-I believe I saw you today driving and texting in rush hour on I-25.
Ed (Silicon Valley)
Or use that money and adopt a rescue dog. Studies have shown having a dog leads to better health. Better yet, take your dog to work with you and the meetings are less contentious, morale goes up and so does productivity. Plus, guys who have dogs are seen as good partners romantically. And having a buddy there no matter what is kinda cool. A watch and phone won't make you healthier or happier. Get a watch dog instead. Name him Mac. Share apples with him. Don't worry. Your current phone is fine.
The Wanderer (Los Gatos, CA)
In full sunlight, my 7 Plus takes better pictures than my Canon 5D Mark III and 24-70mm lens ($4,548). It looks like the new iPhone camera is far superior to the camera in the 7 and it looks like the new camera has a dramatic improvement over the 7 in low light. As just a camera alone, $1,100 looks like a real bargain. Plus it fits in my pocket instead of several pounds breaking my neck.
cremebrulee (Zurich)
@The Wanderer My thoughts too! I fear I might have to upgrade from my iPhone 7 Plus, which has been a superb phone to date. Guess my 5 year old will soon inherit a fancy device to watch his cartoons!
Paulie (Earth)
If you phone takes better pictures than a $5000 camera it’s not the camera, it’s you. You think this comment will get you a promotion at apple?
Nicki (USA)
Just 2 weeks ago, I updated from iPhone 6 to 8plus. My reasons were practical, not because I was salivating at the idea of a new phone. I needed more storage, and I needed a bigger screen due to eyesight issues. I'd paid off the 6, through a carrier plan, so I put this off for months. About 4 years ago, I was gifted a mini Ipad. Now I've outgrown that too. I have an appointment at Apple soon; I decided to go directly to them, to see all my options. With this news coming out now, I hope I don't get tempted to upgrade to something I truly don't need. I've already noticed features of new ones that I'd like to have. Luckily, I don't have the financial luxury of being addicted in an extreme way, though I'm sure people spend what they don't really have. Just wish I had someone in the know to advise on the iPad purchase . But how can anyone truly be, when Apple keeps updating.?
Mary (Seattle)
People might be missing the health benefits (if Apple can bring the price down). It made me think of elderly people living on their own. This will track if they have an episode with their heart. Or if they fall. It will then alert their emergency contact. Priceless.
JES (Lexington, KY)
@Mary I am an elderly person who lives alone. I currently have an iphone 6 and was planning on upgrading to a new iphone after the announcement. After watching the presentation yesterday I have decided to just go with an iPhone 8 and also get an Apple Watch Series 4 LTE I can't wait to own it.
JF (Mtl)
So... We are over the apps training people to seek for dopamine with likes and shares, the teenager and young adult depression epidemics, the multiple addiction risks? Were we not on the verge to rethink our relationship with those devices? But look, this shiny new one is slightly and faster! Lisa vs Malibu Stacy all over again, but this time with a product that is actually a drug.
JF (Mtl)
@JF slightly bigger... Are the batteries still made by cadmium mined by child labor?
Alain (Montréal)
I don’t plan to replace my iPhone X just yet. It works so well. And I actually haven’t finished to pay it yet either so pass. We’ll see in 3 years, maybe. And maybe after Trump gets ousted and all tarifs lifted. I refuse to buy American before this circus is over.
Karen Lee (Washington, DC)
@Alain, pretty sure the iPhones aren't "American"... whatever that might mean to you.
Terry C (Texas)
Not planning to update this year, have 6s plus, working great, new battery.
hjw418 (Wakefield, RI)
I love my 6s. I had to get a replacement just before my credit card extended warrenty ran out, so I will hang on to it till it dies. It's all paid for. I prefer the smaller size, which will fit in my pockets.
John Marquette (Bethlehem, PA)
I'm one of those people with the current model of Apple Watch who was accepted into the UCSF heart study. My watch alerted me to repeated elevated heart rate. I ignored it. Then I joined the heart study and for the app. It told me to contact a doctor when it detected atrial fibrillation on July 16. I was already in the ER when it alerted me (a quibble) and was admitted. Cardioverted and they started treatment the following day. Released eight weeks ago today. I want other people to have the same access to alerts I may have helped pioneer. I'll be a lifetime customer.
William O. Beeman (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Apple's iPhones are a cult product. Their quality is not justified by their price. I have no idea how long it will take before people start getting wise to this marketing strategy, and realize that the quality and functionality of open-source Android phones with standard interfaces and jacks is far superior to the iPhone on a dollar for dollar basis.
R L Donahue (Boston)
@William O. Beeman.... People will get wise to Apple when a new cult leader comes along. It seems we live among a population of insecure citizens who crave to be led like sheep moving toward the cliff. Just reading the comments of adulation towards Apple is validation of this idea.
Stan (Mansfield, OH)
@William O. Beeman This is simply your opinion. I like the way how MacOS and iOS integrate smoothly between each other. My MacBook Pro and Iphone 8 have given me no problems and I would never use Samsung and Windows, no matter the cost savings because the headache is not worth it. One can easily say Lexus, BMW, Tesla are not worth it and own a GM or Ford for half the price, but to each his own. The experience is not the same, though the utility may be the same.
Matthew (New Jersey)
@William O. Beeman OK, so?? My iPhone cost a couple hundred on a plan with Verizon (yuck) and it's all comparable with any Android in the end. No big difference in overall cost. And Apple drove those Androids to be what they are now, so seems a good deal all around. You get what you want and I get what I want. And your very best idea is to reduce options? To flatten out the field to a few Android producers? Why? What is your sincere interest in that happening?
Jason Sypher (Bed-Stuy)
I think the watch stole the show. An advanced medical monitor built into the sexy Apple ecosystem is a nice fit. $500 to likely save a life? Not a bad trade. I'm thinking of getting the family together to purchase one for my father-out-law who is pushing 87 but is still extremely active...and then one for myself who at 50 knows you can go anytime if you're not paying attention.
Karen Lee (Washington, DC)
@Jason Sypher, while Tim Cook mentioned that Apple "will" get FDA approval for the ECG feature of the iPhone X, do you think that placing your finger on the button is equivalent to having a clinical ECG with several sensors placed on your body? Just fyi, typically, an ECG requires several sensors. I wouldn't recommend relying on iPhone to check cardiac health.
Brookhawk (Maryland)
Dear Apple - if the iPhone won't fit in my pocket, I won't buy it, even if it's cheap, which it isn't.
Becky (Baltimore Maryland.)
You won’t, but others will. Luckily, they are offering a range of sizes, along with a range of prices. So, while so many seem to be complaining about large sizes, and $1,000 price tags, you seem to have glossed over all of the smaller, cheaper models also up for sale.
Djt (Dc)
Cant wait to track my heart rate at the point of purchase of all apple products. The only time it may be accurate is when i am no longer alive.
JMFulton, Jr. (England)
Re: Apple Watch and heart monitor. I don't get it. I had a first generation Watch that measured my heart rate. Incidentally, I tossed the Watch a few weeks ago when it started failing. I returned to a nice, simple sweep hand watch. Tells me the time, one hand, day a night. Nothing about this new Watch would draw me back.
Chaks (Fl)
I understand why Apple is value $1 trillion, It keeps having free publicity each time they come up with a new product. Today headlines in most US media are all about Apple new products. One might think a company that has it so easy would at least pay some tax here in the US instead of keeping the money in offshore countries.
Christopher (Atlanta, GA)
@Chaks / For the record, Apple is the largest taxpayer in the world, paying over $35 billion in corporate income taxes in the last three years. An additional $132 billion in overseas funds are subject to repatriation tax rates as part of the 2018 tax reform. Apple's worldwide effective tax rate currently is 24.6 percent, higher than average for US multinationals. Apple is also one of the biggest job creators in the United States, responsible for over two million jobs in all 50 states. Last year, they spent over $50 billion with more than 9,000 U.S. suppliers and manufacturers.
Daphne (East Coast)
@Christopher Not to mention all that sales tax going to the states.
Loomy (Australia)
@Chaks We agree with you in Australia, mate. They don't pay tax here either on all their sales and profits and instead ensure that all income, sales and profit are the responsibility of Apple Singapore which also pays no tax there and with none also going to the U.S, Apple basically ensures (like many multinational Corporations) it pays very little , if any tax on a vast proportion of its sales and profits made. But of course, will claim any and every possible tax deduction it can , often resulting in the company being paid more by governments than it pays them in tax!
James Conner (Northwestern Montana)
I use and love Apple's desktop and laptop computers, but the sun will never rise on the day that I spend a grand on a iPhone when I can buy a burner phone for less than $100. And the burner phone has the added advantage of being small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket and hand. When it comes to cell phones, bigger is not better.
Becky (Baltimore Maryland.)
It depends on what you’re using it for. Clearly, if you need a “burner phone”, you might not be using it the same way most of us are?
crimhead (Minneapolis MN)
I'll be buying the new Apple Watch 4 when it goes on sale. I bought one of the first watches when it came out, and when the watch face fell off after a couple of years, because the battery had swelled and popped it off, Apple replaced the watch at no charge. Great customer service. Plus, being 66, I like the new health features it has added, so I'll finally update to the newest watch. But I'll wait another year before updating my iPhone 8 to a new phone. The iPhones are good enough that I don't feel the need to update every year.
Janette A (Austin)
I have held on to my iPhone 6s plus. It works fine. But I may break down and buy the new iPhone Xs. I also a own an iWatch 2. I will definitely buy the new iWatch 4 if only for the fall sensor and the ability track heart issues (I'm 70). I am currently paying nearly $40 per month for a fall sensing device since due to knee replacements and other issues, I can't get up without help if I fall. The cost of the addition of my iWatch to m current iPhone cellular plan would cost less and no more clunk device hanging around my neck!
Tracy (USA)
@Janette A What does Apple do with your health information?
Rich Stern (Colorado)
$750 is "entry level"? Apple user since the 1970's; love their products. But they are losing me. Holding on to my SE even though it has problems.
John (Colorado)
@Rich Stern SE user here. Re your SE problems do you know about the $29 battery replacement program and iOS 12? Both might give new life to your SE.
RealTRUTH (AR)
Gorgeous and ground-breaking medical tech. This new Watch4 is a breakthrough. Now they need to do continuous non-invasive glucose monitoring and it will be the next iPhone for Apple. I'm buying a LOT more stock (and a new watch)!
SR (Bronx, NY)
The ONLY thing I cared about wrt the iPhone, which looks to be as creepy, pricey, and thoroughly avoidable as ever (and the Apple Watch, even more so than before as "more of a health device"), is whether it'd use the USB Type-C port in some fashion and thus confirm its success or failure. Sadly, this article makes no mention of it. https://wccftech.com/apple-iphone-xs-iphone-xs-max-box-contents/ on the other hand says it won't even use a Lightning-to-USB-C cable as some articles had mentioned days before, but stick with a weak-charging, slightly bulkier Lightning-to-USB-A as before. And since as goes the iPhone, so bizarrely go so many tech and marketing-NOT-"tech" outfits, it's basically an RIP to the new plug of USB, even as Macbooks and other phones and computer peripherals adopted it. A shame, when (plans to add the still-completely-unnecessary and still-disgusting HDCP to a USB Type-C Digital Audio standard notwithstanding) it's a vast improvement over the big rectangular port and the even-more-proprietary Lightning port in many if not all ways.
Sean (Talent, Or)
These new phones and the latest watch aren't meant for people like you. They are really aimed at smart successful people who know how to make the best use of new technology.
Giant (NYC)
@Sean.... probably the most unintentionally telling comment about society's lack of perspective thus far.
Michael (NJ)
Oh everyone's a cynic. As they say, "if you build it, they will come." I guess there are enough people out there (including me!) that are still interested in the latest tech and have bought into the Apple ecosystem. Personally, I've been a Mac and Apple guy since the beginning - I just can't help it. They make great products and stand behind them. That's what you're paying for...Oh that and the logo!
bobdc6 (FL)
Neat, useful gadgets, but hardly necessary when one has an older model that still works. Hardly a fashion statement either since all cell phones look about the same from a distance greater than 4 or 5 feet (they all look like the cover the owner puts them in). Can't argue with success though.
JR (Northwest)
I'm hoping for a new batch of small phones! I stick with an iPhone 5S because it fits in my pocket. I have no way to carry these new behemoths! Anyone else remember when the smaller your cell phone, the higher your status?
stuckincali (l.a.)
Trying to get a battery for my Iphone 5. I have tiny hands, so I can't even hold a Iphone 6 comfortably. Yes, I remember when smaller phones were better-SNL did a skit where a phone was the size of a kumquat.
M (BC, Canada)
Before you know it, we will have iPhones the size of iPads because bigger = better.
Nick (NYC)
Bring back the Zoolander phone!
H. Stiles (03051)
As far as I'm concerned no phone is worth $1,000. Apple lost me to Samsung and Amazon after my 5th iPhone. I was just buying a new iPhone because it was "new" and not because I needed it. We have 5 people in our family and one of our daughters has an iPhone she bought last year. I have a Fire Phone I bought new when Amazon was selling them for $49 with a free year of Amazon Prime. I find it funny that I account for 80% of the minutes in our family of 5 cell phones. My daughter only uses her iPhone for calls. So why a $900 phone???
bruce (ny)
The Times' tech editors seem openly hostile to Apple. At least try to be neutral.
Dirk D (Berlin)
Why does NYT makes a story about the presentation of a commercial product?
scsmits (Orangeburg, SC)
@Dirk D Because the company has the largest capitalization of any company, and because their products are used by millions of people. Other questions?
MikeP (NJ)
Why, exactly, does the NYT treat this garbage as if it were news? Thanks for giving the trillion dollar criminal enterprise (yes, when you pay people pennies per hour, you are a criminal enterprise) known as Apple some free ad space, people. Maybe you should charge them, oh I don't know... maybe $1,000,000,000,000.00 for the advertising when they release a new bunch of useless, overpriced junk next year...
Sean (Talent, Or)
Maybe next year when you're able to get a job, you'll be able to afford one!
AN (Austin, TX)
Every year someone has to ask the same question, why does NYT cover this? They do it because it is a big deal to many consumers and to many competitors. If it is not relevant to you, it is no different than the majority of news sections that NYT covers that others might not care about (e.g. fashion, real estate, automotive, business, etc.). People certainly don't go to those articles and complain about why they are being covered. Not sure why Apple coverage is so polarizing.
Matthew (Nj)
Hope you don’t eat. Because if you think it’s only Apple... look at that apple you are actually eating. Not sayin it’s a good thing, but consumers demand everything is cheap. We are the problem. Apple is just another participant, do don’t think for one second that shunning them is an act of purity. Because it ain’t.

Cant wait to ditch my 7 and get a Pixel 3......ba bye!
AN (Austin, TX)
Doesn't really have anything to do with the article. The 7 was covered two years ago.
JLBurke (Maryland)
Non-news.

When my iPhone quits it'll be the last iPhone. There are alternatives of equal utility at far lesser cost.
Matthew (Nj)
For like a really, really long time, so why do you still have an iPhone?
Pete (Calderone)
Personally, I'm curious to see how many more years Apple can keep the yearly iPhone release cycle up. The smart phone market is saturated. Meaningful innovation has slowed. If they've got to keep increasing prices in order to fuel growth, they're going to hit a ceiling sooner rather than later. It would be a different beast entirely if iPhone release cycles were dictated by a leap forward in technology, and not the price of Apple stock.
Matthew (Nj)
Well, true for ALL smart phone manufacturers. But do tell: what is your best idea for a leap forward in technology? Is there something you want to do with a mobile hand-held device that you can’t do?
Andrew (London)
Is the iPhone X-R the Ten Retrograde?
Mary (Seattle)
I was overjoyed to learn about the exciting health features for the watch. About time tech started solving people's real problems. But later I was downcast to see an iPhone developer show off all the violence video games kids can watch on the new super high retina displays. Yuck.
alfred (us)
if u really want to improve your health, why do u need an expensive watch? Just go out there and move.
Melissa H. (Arizona)
I’m a long-distance swimmer in my 50s, swimming about 25 miles a week. My iWatch 2 keeps track of my laps, split times, heart rate... all kinds of fun stuff. In addition, I swim with an iPod Shuffle that has aftermarket waterproofing and it makes it possible for me to put on music and just escape while I swim, since the iWatch counts my laps, calories and even knows which stroke I’m using. I didn’t start swimming long distances (up to 7 miles a session) until I got the Shuffle, because it was too boring without it. My tween is excited about the new features of the iWatch 4. He claims the fall safety feature would be good for his old mom, but it’s appeal is more likely because he inherits my Apple hand-me-downs!
P H (Seattle )
Never have owned an iPhone ... still don't want one. Moving on ...

@P H I'm with you!

Meanwhile, the low-wage workers who toil assembling the I-Phones continue to jump off the roofs of the Chinese plants. What a wonderful business model.
Comfortably Numb (NYC)
I really cannot remember when was the last time I made a phone call from my iPhone.
Hman (Hunterdon county, NJ)
Such a disappointment. I was hoping for a modest refresh of the SE with an A10 chip to handle iOS 12. Anyone have suggestions for small form factor alternatives?
Paul Perkins (New York)
Is anything going to make the constant need to "Touch ID" or "Enter Passcode" every couple of minutes go away?? Infuriating. And is contra to Steve Jobs central philosophy of elegant simplicity.
A (NYC)
Settings>Display & Brightness > AutoLock> Never Interesting gap that, 5 minutes or never..
robert b (San Francisco)
Apple introduces revolutionary new 5-year-old Android technology! My dual SIM One Plus 6 has a 6.28 inch screen and will out-perform the new $1100 i-phone and costs half as much. OH, and it will charge fully in about half an hour. Apple watches? I'd have to take out my reading glasses to tell what time it is. It's easier to look at my phone.
GP (nj)
I still do not own a smart phone. I write this from a premium level desktop computer, using a 32 inch monitor. I have refused to use a 5 inch or 6 inch screen as a primary information source. Bigger is better, IMO.
John (Allentown)
who said primary source? I love my smart phone because it became somewhat difficult to carry my premium level desktop with 32 inch monitor in my pocket when I travel and need info..
Sean (Talent, Or)
I agree - the 32 inch monitor is especially useful when traveling.
H. Clark (Long Island, NY)
Apple has become the crack dealer of the technology arena. They've got millions hooked on their sleek design and incomparable operating system, and the more you use them, the more you want to buy. This is how they became a trillion-dollar company. It might be nice if, one day, Apple would reward its loyal buyers by offering a discount on a new or existing product. Not a chance. I guess Apple is shooting for the $2 trillion mark now.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Apple had me worried there for awhile. I've been working on a new kind of a phone that attaches to the wall of your bedroom with a copper wire so you can't lose it. There are still a few kinks in it that I have to work out, but I'm hoping to have it out on the market by Christmas. I'm planning to call it Your Does Nothing But Talk To People phone. Next, I'm planning to patent a new kind of shoelace to replace smart watches that you can tie knots in to keep track of how many times you run around a one mile track. People who use it will be required to send me a penny for every knot they tie. After that, who knows? Maybe something to keep pests from trying to sell something to me.
John (Allentown)
good point and when your car breaks you can walk home from where ever to get a ride home. runners , you are not one, do not run miles around a track btw
Becky (SF, CA)
@A. Stanton Can you design a swim goggle that clocks my swim?
Little Albert (Canada)
Great. New grossly overpriced Apple products - with the same guaranteed-to-fail overpriced charging cable - that Apple will not change because allegedly users do not want the Apple look-and-feel to be marred by something that might actually not need to be replaced in relatively short-order but would look a bit coarser and industrial-grade -- as if the success of my impression-management agenda in life will somehow be adversely impacted by the look of the cable I used to charge my phone. Maybe this is just me who thinks this way. I do wonder if others see Apple products as exceptionally well-marketed rip-offs (not unlike a lot of other stuff, I have to admit).
Podesta (Portland)
The iPhone 8 fits my hands. Despite their popularity I have not wanted a larger smartphone. Another reason for opting out is I have tablets. If one has a seven or 8-inch tablet, there is no need for a larger smartphone. The announcement that interested me more is the upgrade to the Apple Watch. Though my Apple Watch 3 LTE works fine, I would consider the improvements in the new model.
RIchard (Yarmouth, Maine)
As usual Apple does a great job introducing its products. I thought I would never buy an Apple Watch but as a person who has had a triple bypass, I want one NOW. My only question is cellular or not because I'm not sure that the SOS feature needs a cellular network?
Podesta (Portland)
You want the LTE version. Unless you have your iPhone nearby, you don’t have regular phone service available on the non-LTE Watch. You will find yourself leaving your iPhone at home more often because with a phone available on the Watch, and music and activity, etc., you have pretty much all you need. You’ll want to buy a pair of AirPods. They make it all work seamlessly.
Keith Nickas (San Francisco)
The Apple event was largely uneventful, with processor upgrades, extended battery life, and, screen sizes. Throughout the 2 hours of product placement there was only one bright spot, the iWatch 4.
The Iconoclast (Oregon)
Apple's entire marketing scheme has become ridicules. Only those fetishizing the products buy the new lines which are pretty much the same as the old lines. After that they force you to buy new as your older units can't handle the most recent OS. And I suspect Apple is deliberately slowing down older phones and maybe laptops too. My 2011 MacBook pro has slowed significantly. At a recent trip to the Apple Store they said it was working perfectly but I have to wait for almost everything. Same thing with my phone even though I'v taken extremely good care of both. So now I'm supposed to spend well over 2K again to update? Wonder if I can still get an SE and maybe a small AIR. So many people are addicted to these objects even though they only use them at 10% capacity. I've been Apple faithful since the mid eighties. This will very likely change soon.
Daphne (East Coast)
XR has lower pixel dimensions/screen resolution than 7 and 8 plus. Why the odd resolution? Departure from standard FHD 1920 x 1080.
alan (san francisco, ca)
Now resorting to gimmicks and price increases. Where has the innovation gone? All phones should have had the OLED screen. But even that screen is inferior to that found on Android models. Pay more get get, except for the hype.
Nicholas Jacobellis (East Haven Connecticut)
More of the same except bigger, a tad bit faster, and more expensive.
Chris C (NYC)
I feel good about getting three years out of my iPhone 6S but the performance has decreased and I only get a few hours of battery life. Is it materialistic to want to get an XS for $1,000? Yes. I'm going to do it anyway.
bruce (ny)
I'm on the 5th for my 5S. Thinking the same.
Kat (Chicago, IL)
Get a new battery! It made my iPhone 6 as fast as my husband's iPhone 8. That, and try not to clutter it up with too many apps...
JS (Seattle)
Or, spend $29 on a new battery. I'm still using an iPhone 6, and it works fine. It also runs faster, because the iPhone will slow down to conserve battery life as the battery charge decreases.
David (Katonah, NY)
There are always new products from Apple that add some features that make them wanted. Is a new iPhone needed? No. But do I want one? Yes.
AGuyInBrooklyn (Brooklyn)
Holding onto my iPhone SE until the geniuses at Apple realize that people still like normal-sized phones that can be held comfortably in one hand...
Freddy (New Jersey )
I was also hoping that they would release the iPhone SE2!
Jose Morales (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico)
Amen, brother.
Paul Roberts (Vallejo, CA)
I like larger phones, but they just aren't practical for me. I have been faithful to Apple for almost a decade now and currently have an SE. I would love to see it with the new charging system, water resistance, and faster chip (A10 at least). I'll probably keep this another 2 years and then may move to another brand as Apple is a fabulous marketing machine, but unresponsive to their customer's needs.
