Cuomo vs. Nixon? He’d Rather Campaign Against Trump

Andrew Cuomo's comments about America not being great will haunt him to the end just like Hilliary's deplorables message. Andrew Cuomo will never be president for many reasons. First of all he is not too smart, not a businessman and has tons of skeletons in the closet. No one is interested in the governor from the most highly taxed state along with all of the other ongoing/continuous damage he has done.

I believe this is a good tactical move by Gov. Cuomo. Cuomo is in a tough spot because should he go on the attack with Nixon, he will come off as a aggressive lunatic while avoiding Nixon makes him look like a chicken. This is probably the best move that Cuomo can make and hope to prevail in November. Cuomo is taking a page out of Trump's playbook in terms of changing his position. For a while, Trump was a Democrat supporting liberal causes but switched sides knowing he has better chance of being elected. It seems Cuomo is fond of Trump but now looks to attack Trump because he will receive more votes that way. Anybody who wants to see Cuomo remain as NY Gov. can't like the approach of this "prevent" defense against Nixon. Nixon has nothing to lose and appears to be progressive that should net her a lot votes. This smells of Arnold Terminator winning California in 2003. Nixon has a chance to win but I doubt New York is better off.

While it is not surprising that Governor Cuomo is at odds with President Trump (join the club), it is telling that Governor Cuomo has been unable or unwilling to forge a productive working relationship with Mayor DeBlasio, a progressive (which is far more disturbing given the governor's expressed values). A strong leader knows how to work with people with different opinions and views in order to best serve the people. More than ever, we need a Democratic nominee for president who has more to offer than simply being anti-Trump. And given all the questionable conduct within the current presidential administration, we can't afford to have a Democratic candidate who is soft on corruption as Governor Cuomo showed himself to be when he abruptly shut down the Moreland Commission.

Note to Cuomo. You are governor of NY you are NOT a candidate for President as much as you'd like to be. You still work for us. We can hire you and also fire you. Please remember who your constituents are. And also can you please re-instate the Moreland Commission? Thank you.

“Collective eye roll” is right— Beside alerting Trump/undermining the AG’s lawsuit for his own benefit, Cuomo has no problem accepting money from the Koch brothers and $64,000 from Trump himself. What a self-serving hypocrite.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@EY On the matter of AG I wouldn't touch Cuomo's pick Tish James. What you get in Cuomo you'll certainly get in James. Uncover graft in Albany or Wall Street under James? Fughataboutit.

I know what Cuomo was trying to say, but didn't his handlers tell him saying "America was Never Great" his message will be Lost? Cuomo figures Ms. Nixon is a sure to lose so let's run againt Trump. He better hope she does not embarass him like Teachout did with her Numbers.

Mr. Cuomo and Ms. Nixon are supposedly running for Governor of New York. To the best of my knowledge, neither foreign policy, FEMA, nor immigration policy are within the purview of that office. Nor is Mr. Trump running against him. I, for one, find both of their obsessions with Mr. Trump disingenuous at best, and a seeming distraction from the fact that they have no idea of how to make things better in New York, the state they allegedly want to run. That is why I intend to vote for Larry Sharpe. His campaign speeches consist of what he will do for New York, not rants about things the governor has no control over.

It is sad to think that Trump has more relevant executive experience than Nixon. 2018 is an election year to vote for experience and Nixon has none.

"On Wednesday, Mr. Cuomo, while attempting to undermine Mr. Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” slogan, said that America “was never that great.” Is this his first day in politics? Great strategy; give your opponents on both sides of the aisle a chance to use your own words against you to question your patriotism. And hopefully New Yorkers will demand more of him than just Trump-bashing.
Ryan M (Houston)
"We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great. We have not reached greatness." Trying to walk back this talk is laughable. Just own it, Governor.
Alan Chaprack (NYC)
America "was never that great?" The governor was most assuredly confusing the country with himself. If he's had any inkling of running for president in 2020, I'd say "get used to Albany...you ain't going nowhere!
Paul (Brooklyn)
He is shooting himself in the foot. He made two big mistakes that can really hurt him in a run for President. The America was never great quote was incredibly poorly stated for a seasoned pol. Saying he wants to put the NRA out of business could even be more lethal. If you want to defeat Trump in 2020, if he is still around, the democrats must run a moderate progressive, not an establishment identity obsessed, social engineering liberal from the east coast. They tried that in 2016, Hillary, and she lost to an ego maniac demagogue named Trump.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
I can think of no politician who is more detestable and incompetent than this guy. The subways, for which he is responsible, stink, the streets are crowded with Uber-like vehicles used by people seeking viable alternatives, his Buffalo initiative is an expensive bust, and look at the horrible job he did when he headed HUD where practically, single-handedly causing the mortgage and housing crises of the last decade. How are the new casinos doing? https://www.villagevoice.com/2008/08/05/andrew-cuomo-and-fannie-and-fred... This whining miscreant has had the job of governor for almost 8 years. How are we better off now? The man has not ever done anything right. I went to a Cynthia Nixon rally last week just to hear what's going on. I disagreed with almost everything she said but I will vote for her in the primary just to get rid of this guy. It's as simple as ABC - Anybody But Cuomo!
Sundevilpeg (Lake Bluff, IL)
@MIKEinNYC Amen. I'd vote for virtually anyone for president other than Cuomo. People really need to take a good hard look at his tenure at HUD. It was a flat-out disaster. He has no business running a lemonade stand, let alone a state or (God forbid!) a country.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
@Sundevilpeg Thank you. HUD was 10 years ago so people don't remember. Glad that you do.
girldriverusa (NYC)
Cuomo is a self-serving politician. Everything he does is so he can win. And his eyes are on The White House. Period. I have zero respect for him and the Albany mess.
Ma (Atl)
@girldriverusa Agree, but if you think there are any politicians that are NOT self-serving today you are naive. Some are worse than others to be sure, but they are all driven by elitist arrogance and re-election dreams. None do their jobs, most are not even capable these days. Their staff's run the office for them, at a large cost to the public they fail to serve.
Phillip Usher (California)
Cuomo must be getting public pronouncement coaching from Hillary Clinton.
Paul (Brooklyn)
@Phillip Usher- yes she is coaching him on how to be: 1-An east coast establishment liberal catering to Wall Street, multi nation companies that deal in trade and also how to embrace no win wars. 2-While at the same time be an identity obsessed never met a social engineering project I did not like. That lethal combo put Hillary on the dust bin of history and gave us the ego maniac demagogue Trump. Obama did not follow this, especially the latter and he served two terms.
Thomas D. (Brooklyn)
It’s official, folks: Cuomo is the NYT’s new Hillary Clinton. And we all know how that worked out.
Enmanuel R. (New York, NY)
New York deserves a lot better than current crop of people running for Governor. Cuomo, Nixon, & Molinaro are none too great. Cuomo is a craven politician, a progressive when the polls say so. I appreciate his efforts at higher public education, gun control, and LGBT rights. I just wish he actually supported these issues out of moral convictions not political convenience. His angling for a presidential bid is both transparent and nauseating. Cynthia Nixon, a true progressive, but unfortunately like many progressives, woefully uninformed on issues of policy details. I do support her bid to democratize New York City public education. Many bright students are suffering in bad middle schools and deserve an opportunity to go to high schools that can nurture their talents. Charter schools are a band-aid on a structural issue stemming from poverty. And Marc Molinaro the Republican candidate? An empty suit controlled by NY Republican bosses that are running around like chickens with their heads cut off wondering if they should support Trump after he raised New Yorkers taxes, or defund education like the geniuses in Oklahoma, Kansas, & West Virginia. I'll probably vote for Nixon and hope it sparks a moral soul inside of Cuomo. Maybe he's human after all.
Carlos (Long Island, USA)
Cuomo is not a Democrat, period. He's a closet Republican (a la Chris Christie) elected on the Democratic line. He dids nothing to support Planned Parenthood, women rights or DACA recipients. He's not friend of unions or public schools. He promoted the split of Democrats on the State Senate to give control of the Senate to Republicans, facilitating in this way his center-right agenda. He is not a center-left or progressive Democrat. I hope Cynthia Nixon will win the primary.
Ma (Atl)
@Carlos How naive. Cuomo is no closer to a Rep than Pelosi. You fail to recognize that it's not Reps that are 'evil' as you imply, but politicians - especially life long politicians. This country was not based on full time politicians, but working citizens that also worked in government for a portion of their lives.
Garth (NYC)
I am old enough to remember a day when politicians actually focused on what they're going to do to help their constituents rather than base their entire campaign on ripping a president no matter how bad he is. It would be nice to hear about maybe efforts to lower property taxes now that only a portion can be deducted but of course that will take more than just rhetoric which it appears politicians on both sides of the aisle are no longer capable of doing anything but rhetoric. Bizarre times we live in.
ubique (New York)
Oh no, a politician pulled a ‘Biden’. Even an incumbent Governor could face some turbulence in an election after a gaffe like that. Maybe not against an opponent whose first foray into politics has been brought to us by Bill de Blasio, but still.
