Why is Liebovich pretending that Paul Ryan has ever had an "idea" in his life? Gutting social services to give tax cuts to people who don't need them isn't an "idea" or a "philosophy of government." It's just gross greed. What "tragedies" did he avert? What an egotist.

We are all know he got his tax cut and don't need to work. I mean really do they really work lol no!!

Connecting Paul Ryan's condition as the adult child of an alcoholic with his relationship with Donald Trump is interesting, but better left to psychologists. The leading questions were gross to hear – bad form, guys. Who knows what work Paul has done behind the scenes to come to terms with that, that's his own journey. And he clearly had no idea of the intent behind those questions. The NY Times was no better here than Dr. Phil. I'm sure we could dissect every Republican leader for why they are the way they are, including what made Trump a toxic narcissist. But in the end, only they are accountable for their actions – no matter what motivated them. Stay focused on that.

Not even close to holding Ryan to account. Does he have no role in maintaining checks and balances? Allows Nunes to run roughshod over DOJ? And he may use the phrase tax reform, but we shouldn’t call it that. It isn’t. Sorry his dad was alcoholic. No excuse for Ryan to be an empty suit.

Republican Paul Ryan as a representative then Speaker failed to confront the Republican extreme right Freedom Caucus and then Trumpism and when the going got tough, joined other Republicans who chose to retire. His legacy is a Congress that is unable to govern and a country considerably weaker because of his cowardice.

This was rich! Thank you for sharing the interview experience and letting us ride around in the car with Mark Leibovich and Paul Ryan. It's such a privilege to have access to the sounds and methods of the interview. I was not surprised to learn that Paul Ryan has reflected a lot on temperament and has harbored an aversion for conflict. When I visit family in Iowa, the words "civility", "temperament" come up often. Then again, it seems like Paul Ryan is past an aversion for conflict and is in full-on coping mode. I was surprised by Paul Ryan's attention to the "meaningful." Has he always sought out the meaningful? Or is this an attitude he's adopted having been at risk of being attacked, belittled and bullied by a malicious superior? I wonder if Ryan had an exit interview with Trump. Hopefully, they both got an evaluation.
