God Made Andrew Cuomo a Feminist. What Kind?

If the only thing Nixon accomplishes is keeping pressure on Cuomo to not forgot his base then she has been successful. That's what's she's doing. Keep it up!
Dotconnector (New York)
Gov. Cuomo's bullying brand of pay-to-play politics is purely transactional. All those recent felony corruption convictions of those in his orbit are no coincidence. If you're looking for core beliefs, look elsewhere.
Horace Dewey (NYC)
Feminist? Yeah, Andrew is a feminist. The zeitgeist calls for a feminist and -- abracadabra -- we have a feminist. If society was going off its rockers over water polo, he'd be bobbing up and down in the pool, wearing one of those funny-looking bathing caps. Look closely at his career. There is no core there. So yes, he's a feminist, and I don't minimize the importance of that. But anyone who fantasizes about him anguishing over the place of women in society should remember that his views are ALWAYS contingent on the shifting of political winds. The only time one gets a window on Cuomo's basic beliefs is about 2 - 3 weeks after he wins an election. Let's just be glad that NY voters aren't demanding that prohibitions on smoking inside public buildings be repealed.
Independent Voter (USA)
Everyone, everyone around this guy is either in jail or going to jail. A third term WHY?
Maria Ashot (EU)
I really could not care less what "kind of feminist" Andrew Cuomo, or anyone else, is. The only thing that matters is how much will he stand up to Trump and the derelict Republicans, and the corrupt Russian oligarchs, and their fellow travelers in the USA. Rock on, Andrew Cuomo. You and your whole family are great people, great Americans and astute, gifted political experts.
Jack be Quick (Albany)
Andrew Cuomo is a phony of the first rank. Like another politician from NY, nothing Cuomo says can be believed. Perhaps, if the NY Times would put news of the recent convictions of some of his top aides nearer to the front page, more would see what a phony Cuomo is. ABC!
Bonnie (Brooklyn)
Oh, please. Cynthia Nixon made Cuomo a feminist.
Edmund (New York, NY)
Cuomo is a phony, with wide ambitions and very little sincerity or honesty. I don't trust him, I don't like him and I won't vote for him again.
Quandry (LI,NY)
Cuomo is an opposite, liberal, authoritarian doppelgänger of a Trump. Each, think they are without peer. Each thinks of themselves first. Each lets their subordinates do the dirty work, some of whom get caught and pay the price criminally. Their only difference is that Cuomo is devious, and Trump is deviously stupid. We should put them in a ring together and see which one prevails.
Jim (BeamSoldYeah)
How anyone could vote for Nixon over Cuomo in NY is hard to believe. Incredible, I'm no Cuomo lover but Nixon? The fact she's getting 30% right now tells me the State is Lost big time, and will continue to lose populace to the more fiscally responsible states
DMB (Macedonia)
Sounds like the United States In November 2016.
Rocky L. R. (NY)
Are you going to vote for someone in league with the traitor in the White House or someone who actually gives a damn about America? It's as simple as that.
Cjmesq0 (Bronx, NY)
This guy Cuomo may be the worst of the worst Dem leftist kook politicians in America. He is corrupt to the core..his cronies were all convicted in the Buffalo Billions case...and he’s moving to the left of the Marxist running against him in the primary. I ca only pray he loses his primary against the Marxist. We need the Republican to save NY.
Yankee49 (Rochester NY)
Cuomo is nothing more than version of Bill Clinton when it comes to "progressive" rhetoric while sucking up to Wall Street and whatever he sees as benefitting his ambitions. He is like his father in name only. Mario had integrity. Andrew? His record speaks for itself.
Blackmamba (Il)
God is a black American female single mother. And she did not make Andrew Cuomo any kind of feminist. While Lucifer is a white American good old boy tobacco chewing, beer swilling, gun toting NASCAR watching and hunting son of the Confederacy and a Trump supporter.
Steve (longisland)
Cuomo is a corrupt leftist. His father was a principled liberal. I would not trust Andrew with dog catcher, let alone President.
CFB (NYC)
Nothing about Andrew Cuomo speaks to me as a feminist. The very fact that he is the son of a predecessor, part of the creepy phenomenon of American political dynasties, is just more male entitlement. Let's see if he will deign to debate Cynthia Nixon, the feminist who is challenging him in the primary.
N.B. (Cambridge, MA)
He is a masculine feminist: le feminist, for sure.
Aaron (Orange County, CA)
Another protest rally? How original! What's this one about again..???
Imagine (Scarsdale)
That video of his asking the reporter to eat a sausage: disgusting.
David Gregory (Sunbelt)
Mr Cuomo is what many call a Democrat In Name Only (DINO). The term fits him well and he sees himself as Presidential material. No thanks, in 2016 we got the non-choice between 2 New York 1%ers and all can see how well that worked out. Hope he gets upset.
L (NYC)
IMO, Andrew Cuomo is a complete political hack. He just *loves* power and picking a fight. He'd rather fight than get anything accomplished. He lies oh-so-easily. And he's corrupt - two words: MORELAND COMMISSION. I will NEVER vote for Cuomo, not for governor nor for any other office in the USA. Never, ever. He's had plenty of time to be useful to the people of this state. He has failed. As for Nixon, she is the *other* narcissist candidate - she loves the sound of her own voice being "righteous." No thanks. I'm a woman and my vote isn't going to anyone who can't convince me that they have detailed plans, a desire to genuinely SERVE the people of NY State, and a sincere intention of actually getting things done for the benefit of the majority of NY State citizens. I'm tired of NY State being dysfunctional; it used to be "3 men in a room" - now it's CUOMO alone in a room, and he still can't get anything done. If necessary, I will write-in a vote for Mickey Mouse for governor this November.
Chen (Queens, NY)
Unless the fetal abnormality endangers the woman, many doctors would decline to perform such a late term abortion. It’s not just a matter of New York Penal Code. Finding a doctor both qualified and willing to perform an abortion at 30 weeks would be difficult anywhere. This woman had to go all the way to Colorado. Remember gay marriage passed only because four upstate Republicans in the State Senate supported it. None are around anymore. One retired and three were defeated by primary challengers. Their votes were needed even more since a Hispanic Democrat from the Bronx didn’t just vote against the bill, he held a rally opposing it. No Republican is going to risk their neck to vote for late term abortion. So whether Cuomo is your kind of feminist doesn’t matter, having him push when defeat is assured is unrealistic. He knows he doesn’t have the votes. The State Senate has never been in the Democrats control because Simcha Felder caucuses with Republicans. Felder doesn’t support the abortion bill. Ramos and Biaggi are good candidates, but their election wouldn’t change the math. It’s the upstate and swing districts which Democrats need to win. Do you really think Cuomo’s involvement will help Democrats running in those districts.
Justice Holmes (Charleston)
Sadly the Catholic Church holds much power in this state and as a result, women are second class citizens when it comes to reproductive rights. We should all be concerned because the Church through a number of their policitcal non profits is ramping up its midterm activities. One lovely “Catholic” non-profit is sending around materials accusing the Democratic Party of a war on Catholics! The mailing makes it clear that the only way to protect your right to be a Catholic is to vote Republican. And this after DeBlasio just have the Church a $300 million gift! Don’t believe me? Look it up. The religious entities in the country have no interest in the public good only power and control. While occasionally their leaders make some noises about particular policies they whole heartily support the Republicans.
Eddie B (NYC)
A shameless, unabashedly showman from NY that specializes in making bold claims with no benefit to the citizens, not that guy in the White House, we have another NY'er for you USA. Cuomo is just as empty and void of any shame, just like Trump, just with different ideology.
Ray Sipe (Florida)
Cuomo has the power to release/investigate Trump's tax returns. If he can do that; Cuomo would be a hero and skyrocket his political career. Ray Sipe
Blue (St Petersburg FL)
God made Andrew Cuomo a political opportunist with huge ambitions Don’t confuse any of that for principles.
The SGM (Indianapolis)
So now he is appealing to women inorder to help extending the Cuomo Dynasty. When will NY wake up to the fact that the Dynasty governs via the blowing of the wind?
Paul (Brooklyn)
I love the top few most reader pick posts here. They make this guy sound worse than Trump. Nobody in the modern era has come close to being as bad as Trump from either party. Liberals, don't make the mistake of nominating nationally in 2012 or in purple districts in 2016 identity obsessed east coast establishment liberals like Hillary was in 2016. If you do you are gonna give the ego maniac demagogue Trump a likely second term. Run an American, male or female, that is not identity obsessed and want to consolidate the progressive gains made but not put at the top of the list a demand that a transgendered lesbian gay have a statute on the WH lawn or that 50% of all CEOs be women. Stress some progressive points that moderates in conservative states can agree on like a national, affordable quality health plan or keeping abortions legal for at least the first three months. You need these guys to win. Learn from history or be condemned to repeat its' worst mistakes.
Paul (Brooklyn)
typos, nominating nationally in 2020, or in purple district in 2018...
XY (NYC)
Please. Abortion in NY is a settled matter and the only reason politicians like Cuomo talk about it (within the context of NY), is to get votes from ignorant pro-choice voters. It is called pandering. Being governor is about management of a huge number of agencies overseeing a lot of small issues. For example, the NYS Parks Dept, out at Jones Beach, spent a ton of money on renovating the old, but perfectly good outdoor shower rooms, into an unusable, unhygienic, disgusting, indoor mess. It takes talent to mess up a shower room at a beach. And that is exactly the sort of talent that Governor Cuomo brings to his tenure as NYS Governor.
Kevin McGrath (Northport,NY)
Women talk about being allowed to control their own bodies. How about self control and birth control. You have the ultimate power over getting pregnant. Stop blaming others, and take control of you own bodies. As far as Cuomo, He just sees which way the wind is blowing and sails along. The special of the day. I wonder why he did not try and figure a way to get to Thailand to "save" the team. He seems to go to every place else" Puerto Rico" to help, out except New York State. He is the last man standing in a corrupt state. "The fish stinks from the head".
paul (White Plains, NY)
Andrew Cuomo is an opportunist who will exploit the latest cause celeb to his full advantage. With so many of his inner circle being indicted and convicted of crimes that enriched them and their political cronies, Cuomo is looking to deflect attention from his association with these crooks. He does so any way he can, including jetting to Puerto Rico to inspect hurricane damage, or joining the Me Too movement. When will New Yorkers wake up and smell the rot that is the Cuomo administration?
ERT (New York, NY)
There are many reasons to be against Brett Kavanaugh. Perhaps the Times could start enumerating them instead of countless "they'll overturn Roe v. Wade" screeds. What is this, number seven in the series?
ubique (NY)
Andrew Cuomo is an ethically malleable politician, and New York State is pretty reliably ‘purple’. Nevertheless, Albany is not the Five Burroughs, and there is far too much at stake to risk losing the Governor’s Mansion on the prayer that a B-list celebrity with no civil service background might somehow have the answers to our State’s political problems because she’s not a man.
Marty O'Toole (Los Angeles)
Anti-man tearing is what helps elect Republicans (and stalls progress).
Steve Singer (Chicago)
Gov. Cuomo should retire and keep bees.
paul (White Plains, NY)
I keep bees. They are hard working, industrious, and extremely loyal to their hive. All the things that Cuomo is not. Any hive placed on Cuomo property would swarm.
edtownes (nyc)
It's high time that the more decent and more liberal op-ed staff of the Times recognizes that Andy is a caucasian Al Sharpton - a fine, sometimes eloquent speaker ... with little more than blind personal ambition where New Yorkers deserve more and better! Ms. Bellafante alludes to the horribly cynical game (trick is more like it) played re the I.D.C. for years and years. Even now, there are enuf bought and paid for legislators - THANKS TO CUOMO - up there in Albany to effectively put children at risk crossing our city's streets. I'm convinced that the NY Times would NOT carry Cuomo's water for years and years if they genuinely believed he was crooked. But this is like Trump & the Russians. How much smoke are you willing to choke on before you acknowledge that there probably IS a fire? Andy's being spineless re speed cameras puts kids at risk; Ms. Bellafante could find dozens - or 100's = of women whose LIVES were put at risk by Cuomo's cynical pandering to Catholic voters and clergy. (Not everybody CAN get on a plane to Colorado ... any more than they could fly to Puerto Rico before Roe v. Wade FREED WOMEN from a form of slavery.) And the billions of dollars that our City has been cheated of re education ... are the root cause of our failing public schools. Still, the Times will trumpet his "experience" when they - so, so sadly - will endorse him for re-election! He has experience "talking a good game" and playing this group off against that group. We deserve better!
rob H (new york)
cuomo runs the NYS government as if he is a mafioso. Corruption has blossomed under his reign.
susan (nyc)
It's called pandering.
marrtyy (manhattan)
I could care less than Cuomo is a feminist. I'm tired of these Frankenstein politicians who get bolted together by the media and advocacy groups. If a politician stands for everything, they stand for nothing. Just look what happened to the Dems. They are controlled by every group from civil rights to hammer toes... And we got Trump.
Frank DeRosa (Wilton, CT)
With a wife of 56 years, four daughters and three granddaughters, I still know that God has not made me a Andrew Cuomo-like feminist. But I love and support them all as individuals. Poor Andrew. He doesn't get it.
Jack Lindahl (Hartsdale, NY)
One would have thought Andrew Cuomo had learned some lessons from the experience of his father's 3rd term in office. Somehow, it always becomes kind of a disaster as the citizens become tired of the act. Plus, the elder Cuomo's hopes for a run for the presidency were dashed as a result. I don't think he could have counted on carrying his own state at that point.
Richard Luettgen (New Jersey)
Cuomo kinda boggles the mind. He's going to crush Miranda on September 13th and crush as well in the general election. Yet every time he opens his mouth, he runs the risk of something icky (or at least controversial) coming out. He should just bury himself in Albany and keep quiet.
Positively (4th Street)
Surprisingly, Albany doesn't want him either. Percoco, guilty. Kalyeros, guilty.
FunkyIrishman (member of the resistance)
You would think that if you were going to assert any type of label, that you would have the longstanding bonafides to back them up. Alas, this Governor and man do not measure up tho the claim. You simply cannot chase issues and have any trust within the electorate that you are sincere in your stances.
Positively (4th Street)
Intentionally snubbed Zephyr Teachout and wouldn't even acknolwedge her with a public handshake. Cuomo feminism, writ large.
Publius (Reality)
Cuomo is a DINO -- a Democrat in name only. Like his friend Christie, he has been more interested in seeming a middle of the roader able to "work with the other party." To that end he has kept the New York Republican party on life support rather than working for Democratic dominance in the state as in California. He backs a few big ticket items like same sex marriage, but lets the Republicans gerrymander the Senate in return. On most less than big ticket items it is Albany politics as usual, just as in his father's day. Hence no speed cameras. Cynthia Nixon is just another inexperienced rich celeb that we have too many of already. We need a real Democrat for governor. We shouldn't forget that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was once governor of New York.
Ludwig (New York)
I thought it was the job of the VOTERS to bring back democracy? We are the providers of democracy. The politicians are merely its consumers.
Ludwig (New York)
"when it comes to advancing reproductive rights," Perhaps they could be called "anti-reproductive" rights? Of course it is like the "defense" forces that all countries have. If every country has a defense force and no country has an offense force, then why is a defense force even needed? (smile). Actually the world does have far too much reproduction and we do need to control it. But perhaps killing fetuses is not the most humane way.
Sara M (NY)
A problem that Cuomo has not dealt with is the total absence of ethics in the State House. The problem we have is that when we uncover someone like Silver there is nothing we can do to discourage him since the rules for pols is different than it is for all of us unwashed.
DJ (Yonkers)
Sorry Sara, Cuomo did deal effectively with ethics violations and corruption in the state capital. The Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption was poised to issue subpoenas to the treasurers of several state Senate campaign committees when Gov. Cuomo abruptly shut down the panel.
Susan Anderson (Boston)
Oh please, leave god (whatever or whoever he/she/it is) out of it! And while you're at it, Chris Cuomo/CNN have an all-fired nerve going up against Rachel Maddow. Shameless self-promoters. Gov. Cuomo needs to fix New York public transit. He's already looted too much of their funds for his glossy projects. I'm not fond of Cynthia Nixon, too bad. Kavanaugh is a disaster for the nation, an autocracy-anti-voter-anti-women's equality chancer, but running on opposing him is shallow opportunism.
Eddie B (NYC)
Zephy Teachout was a great candidate but the system that Cuomo and his predecessors has created drowns out any opposition.
SR (New York)
Whatever Mr. Cuomo claims to be, I think that one can be certain that any assertion on his part has been made with the highest degree of Machiavellian consideration.
Vince Palmisano (Farmington, NY)
Mr. Cuomo makes a young willow tree look sturdy in a windstorm, the way he responds to possible waves among the electorate. He is a politicianfirst, unning for his own sel-aggrandizment, doing whatever he needs to do to make himself a winner.
stan continople (brooklyn)
There's too much money sloshing around in this state, and city in particular, to field a genuine progressive politician. Ocasio-Cortez made headlines because she's the exception, her seeming insignificance allowing her to fly under the radar of Wall Street and the developers. Schumer and Cuomo, on the other hand, are their lickspittles. For example, Schumer spent most of his career fighting tooth and nail to retain the carried interest loophole for hedge fund mangers, and when DeBlasio proposed a millionaire's tax to finance subway repair, within a nanosecond Cuomo had a meltdown; you can bet his phone was ringing off the hook as he reassured his patrones it would never come to pass. You might have to investigate deeply to determine where their funding is actually coming from but if you can find a Democratic candidate for any position in New York State that does not take money from either Wall Street or real estate developers, vote for them! They might have a few good years in them before they're also co-opted.
Susan Anderson (Boston)
I think you'd best drop the "litmus test" and vote for people who will bring democracy back to our government, regardless of funding. Insisting on unilateral disarmament and circular firing squads sounds nice, but it doesn't get the job done.
DaveG (Manhattan)
Andy's anti-corruption commission, the Moreland Commission, also didn't "get the job done" because Andy shut it down before it could complete its work. We may never know fully about the corruption in Albany, thanks to Andy. And we may never fully know about Andy's own corruption, either. As a registered Democrat, I will never vote for him, under any circumstances.
theresa (new york)
To think that you can have democracy "regardless of funding" is illogical.
Thomas (New York)
When Mr. Cuomo's father was governor, the Republican-controlled state senate blocked progressive legislation. I thought we could have had a Democratic majority in the senate if he campaigned vigorously for Democratic candidates, but he never did. My take on it was that he liked the deadlock, because he could tell his Democratic supporters that he'd tried to pass progressive legislation, but the Republicans had blocked it, and by not passing progressive legislation he didn't raise vigorous Republican opposition to his reelection. Maybe the son is playing that game but looking to a larger Republican constituency.
Name (Here)
Not sure why we bother with two labels. The two parties are two sides of the same face. The role of the Republicans is to smile broadly and stand up for the wealthy and powerful. And the role of the Democrats is to stand up for the wealthy and powerful while wringing their hands and wearing a frowny face.
Name (Here)
Are you surprised? Trump has had a list of them for months now.
honeybluestar (nyc)
this is not about Cuomo’s father...disgusting to raise that. Nixon says a lot but has no experience the last thing we need is a celeb governor. talk about not working with the senate—she will eschew all compromise. I am progressive, agree with many of her views —-but she is EMPTY. has never done anything to remotely qualify for the job. look at what celeb president got us. NIXON SHUT UP AND GET OUT NOW
Mickeyd (NYC)
What kind of feminist is Cuomo? An insincere one. What kind of liberal is he? An insincere one. Mr Cuomo is, astonishingly, very much like our president. There are all kinds of narcissists but Cuomo is highly ambitious, and his own career, which he foolishly thinks will lead to the White House, is most important to him. What kind of person is he? An insincere one.
james (nyc)
The anti SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh signs must have been left blank until the protesters knew they were against him. They were going to be against any Trump nominee regardless of qualifications.
Norman (NYC)
Trump had announced, and the protesters knew, that Trump was picking the next SCOTUS nominee from a list provided by the Federalist Society. The Federalist Society is a formerly libertarian organization whose members sold out their principles to get access to power. One of the libertarian principes they sold out was the right to abortion. Therefore the protesters knew that any nominee would be anti-abortion -- regardless of whether he believed it. And it turned out to be true. Trump himself was pro-abortion, until it was convenient for him to be anti-abortion. But you can't accuse Trump of selling out his principles. He never had any principles.
ERT (New York, NY)
Given the Republican theft of a Supreme Court seat that was Barack Obama's to fill it's hard to blame them.
Greg (Jackson Heights)
New York badly needs voter referendums to initiate legislation and constitutional amendments. Then, term limits. No governor should ever serve more than two terms.
Chen (Queens, NY)
No way. The proposition system in California has made governing there a complete mess. It isn’t direct democracy. It’s tyranny of the majority, but with billionaire supported signature gathering and corporate funded advertising campaigns.
P.C.Chapman (Atlanta, GA)
Direct referendum.... For an example of the consequences, intended and otherwise, look no further than the UK. A tiny majority, paid for with foreign money, has voted for a disaster. No assigned reading in this post, but read The Guardian for a sample of what a future non-EU Britain will look like.
Charles (New York)
Most referendums represent the hysteria of the day often poorly thought out and heavily influenced by dubious sources.
Vicki (NYC)
Seven and one half years in Albany conspiring to avoid any legislation that Progressives believe in. Cuomo does just the barest minimum to uphold his fairytale of being a Progressive Governor. A vague and incomplete "fracking ban" while allowing fracked gas to flow freely through New York State allowed him to proclaim that he is a responsible environmentalist. Now his usual nonsense clouding the issue of Women's Reproductive Rights. The Governor prefers to be marching with the big money that Planned Parenthood represents than working to actually pass legislation that will protect New York State's women. Please, New York. Time to stop listening to the NY Governor's rhetoric and Vote For an actual Progressive leader, Cynthia Nixon
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
The man is a total, whining incompetent. Look how great the subways, his subways, are running. Look at how he caused the mortgage and housing crises in the last decade: https://www.villagevoice.com/2008/08/05/andrew-cuomo-and-fannie-and-fred...
Bill (NY)
Feminist? Please spare me the false label. This is just the governor hijacking yet another issue to show what a "progressive he is alleged to be. He has led from behind on all progressive issues when he determines which way the wind is blowing. Same sex marriage? Hijacked? Pre-K? Hijacked. Free college tuition? Hijacked. So please forgive me when I find myself less than convinced about his sincerity on the issue of a woman's right to choose.
EdNY (NYC)
In all fairness, he pushed very hard to get NYS to pass its marriage equality act.
theresa (new york)
He had to repair ties with the gay community after the notorious "vote for Cuomo not the homo" campaign he ran for his father against Koch.
Jen H (New York, NY)
He got marriage equality done early in his first term. Why can’t he do the same for reproductive rights?
Zenster (Manhattan)
Cuomo, a seasoned politician has a difficult job dealing with the realities of a State Senate with a multitude of opinions and agendas. Can you imagine Cynthia Nixon trying to deal with the NY State Senate? They will ignore her and her Sex and the City experience will be of no use. With Trumpism on the Federal level we need Cuomo's experience so we can continue to think "the Federal government is a mess but at least I live in New York"
Martha (Brooklyn)
That thinking is what has enabled Cuomo to coast on his rhetoric on too many issues, especially on abortion rights and on clean energy initiatives. I would look forward to a governor who excels at both the rhetoric and the commitment, and to the excellence of her appointments.
badubois (New Hampshire)
Oh please. Andrew Cuomo a feminist? Cuomo is so slippery that if it polled well, he'd be out promoting "The Handmaid's Tale" as an instruction manual.
