I love Avenatti, and the country needs him badly to fly in the face of our narcissistic, sociopath of a President. But the press can be funny. Right now, he is their hero, however if he attains the kind of fame and newsworthy notoriety that he seems destined for, the press will turn on him. They ALWAYS do. Eventually his skeletons will come out of the closet and if there aren't any they will make them up. Barbra Streisand said of the press and the public "they build you up so they can knock you down". No overnight superstar has escaped this no matter the setting: Politics, the arts, the media, you name it. They start out a hero, then get slaughtered, and only the strongest survive beyond that. It will happen but as long as he is prepared for it, he'll survive.

To judge by many of the comments, he seems to have a fan club among many of the readers who seem to be displacing their forbidden love for one villain with infatuation for another who is considered a more acceptable object of idolatry. What we end up with is an article that reads like a creepy love letter and is totally unhinged from reality.

One has to see both the strength and weakness of the Avenatti personality. Mostly he does seem like a God send. He can easily go toe to toe with any Trump sycophant; and can cut through all the typical bull and chaff Republicans regularly throw at anyone who they see as a threat. And Avenatti is clearly a major threat. He does not suffer fools gladly; and does not pussyfoot around the issues that so many mainstream liberals and journalists seem to do. He has a bulldog ability to stand his ground and take on anyone, anywhere, anytime. My only real concern is it has already been established he is a hound for the spotlight. As long as he remembers to keep to the facts and not let his ego get in the way; then Trump and the G.O.P. have an opponent they should respect and fear!

Avenatti is important because this trashy lawsuit is one of the few remedies we have left. Capitalism didn’t stop his “business” career. Politics isn’t stopping his authoritarianism. The law has been hobbled by his toadies and Fox PR. He has never been held to account. Trump “succeeded” in getting rich because he inherited wealth, extracted rents, worked with corrupt financiers, declared bankruptcy, relies on licensing, and produced lowest-common-denominator entertainment. He’s no “businessman.” He got by stiffing people, using loopholes, stealing from charity, and, probably cheating on his taxes. He won the presidency because he was willing to lie more brazenly than his rivals, leverage racist tribalism and accept help from foreign spies. He’s no leader. And now he’s turning the public against the FBI because he’ll do anything to protect himself. Avenatti’s work gives people hope because suing Trump may be the one option we have left for serving up justice. Trump has escaped the consequences of his immortality his entire life. It’s time for that to end.

Its quite disappointing that The New York Times has decided to give this much coverage to this guy (the Sunday Magazine!). Would be interested in whether all that hail him as the messiah would be feeling the same way if he was trying to bring down someone they are not vehemently opposed to. Its one thing to disagree with the president and his policies, as I do, but to worship people like this only because he may succeed in bringing down a president is horrific. This guy is nothing but a shameless lawyer in it for the fame and the money. For someone who purports to be a lawyer, Kim does not seem to understand the issues. It matters not whether Trump had a "need" for an NDA. And the NDA does not prohibit her from talking about an affair or sex with Trump; if it did, Kim might be right. But what the NDA does is restrict Stormy from discussing any relationship with Trump, regardless of whether there was one, or if they had sex. So yes, Avenatti is exposing Stormy to very significant liability.

Just curious, but why was Stormy arrested for "touching" a man (undercover agents) and yet no one will arrest trump for "touching" women? The difference in the two is that Stormy was performing a nightclub act..... and trump was grabbing women in public, in private, with or without consent or expectation, laughing about it, boasting that he had, acting like a juvenile delinquent and no one, but no one was paying him for the performance. That makes his acts a crime. So - why is she arrested and he is not?

Here is the problem with this article and Mr. Avenatti, the more the media focuses on Stormy Daniels the more air that gets taken out of the room to discuss real issues. For this upcoming election, if the Democrats can focus on the Republicans repeal of ACA and that the next congress, if it is still controlled by Republicans, will see sharp cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs, they have a chance. I disagree on the candidate part. I want to vote for people who have some experience in government, not popularity. As an example, I recently pondered what I would do if I was mayor of my city. Fire the police chief, I thought, and tell the next one they had 24 hours to clean up the open-air drug market downtown or they would be replaced. Then I did some reading and discovered that my mayor cannot do that. There is a whole process of choosing candidates involving the police union and various other groups. My current mayor knows all of that because she has spent a few decades working her way up and knows all about procedures. It would take me a long time to learn on the job and that is not in anyone's best interest.

It is clear that the white shoe lawyers do not like Avenatti's style because he "try" his case in the public when possible. At the same time, one cannot deny that his style has been extremely effective in shining the spotlight on Trump's extremely cruel and inhumane practice of forcibly separating refugee parents from their young children that hark back to scenes from Sophie's choice and US internment of Japanese American. Other nonprofits and attorney volunteers may well have done more work for these refugees, but Avenatti has help kept his clients' plight in the front pages and on TV even as the Trump Administration try to keep everything underwrap.

The only court which counts is the one with a judge present. TV is not a courtroom. Any competent lawyer should know this. Actions speak louder than words. No one cares what you say- lawyers' words are not evidence. And no one cares what you look like, Mr. Avenatti, or how often you visit the gym. John Adams got acquittals for 7 of the 9 the British soldiers charged in the Boston Massacre trials, and reduced charges for the other 2- IN BOSTON. By all accounts, he was neither particularly handsome, and not known to work out, either. He took these cases as a matter of principle even though they could have ruined his career, not because they presented an opportunity for self-aggrandizement. If you have a case against the President, bring it. Until then, you're just a showman, not a lawyer. Says this trial lawyer with 38 years of experience.

Some in my neighborhood see him as a saint; others see him as a very necessary pain in Trump's backside. From a personal perspective, I see him as one who is willing -- and capable -- of doing what no one in the media did during the 2016 campaign: revealing Trump for the ignorant fraud that he is. What also is evident, and likely underappreciated by the American public is Avenatti's willingness to go toe-to-toe with Trump's surrogates, especially Giuliani and Cohen. Cohen is likely to be indicted for bank fraud; Giuliani has been exposed as a bumbling, hypocritical schmuck, a former federal prosecutor willing to toss his morals and his reputation out the window in order to serve Trump's corruption of our political process, as well as his unending vanity -- 'I must be seen as the center of all things!' It is better that Mr Avenatti do his job, which is to defend his client Stormy Daniels rather than attempt to bring down a sitting President. As I understand it, Ms Daniels has signed a non-disclosure agreement with Mr Trump and Mr Avenatti is trying to release her from that agreement. However the agreement is still in force and if she reneges on the agreement she will be liable for substantial penalties. She will also be facing charges in relation to this most recent incident.

I'm a Michael Avenatti fan. He's got the same moxie as Trump, but Michael is intelligent, both street smart and book smart (there’s a big difference), and he’s mentally stable. If anyone can beat Trump at his own game, it’s Michael. Trump is street smart only and reactionary, but I doubt if he has ever cracked a book and I doubt if I have to even say that his mental health is questionable. The democrats might seriously consider Michael as a contender in 2020. He’s the only one that I can see out-Trumping Trump, but in a good way. However, this is in reality a civil matter, and what is going to bring down this President (if anything) is going to be the money trail leading to Russia and elsewhere. That is why it is taking so long for the Mueller investigation, because many suspect the money trails to be extensive and across multiple districts. It takes time to subpoena and get warrants for the millions of documents. I am sure there are districts that are vigorously resisting. In the meantime, Mrs. Clifford is well represented and the show that is being put on is delicious. (worth far more than just $130,000)

Thank you for this. I am living at the lake for the summer without TV so have become less engaged with the shenanigans associated with the President of the United States. Isn't that a sad statement? Just what I read in the NY Times and LA Times where I have close family living and I have really scaled back on that, so this is very helpful. I find myself in a better mood, and my wife noticed I am not as likely to get angry and swear out-loud about things. I know Robert Mueller III is not going to save us, but perhaps Michael Avenatti will?

Avenatti is the only person who has truly challenged Trump. It seems that he has pulled back recently from broadcast appearances, which is wise. He is no doubt waiting for the opportunity to dial up his intensity when and if the Justice Department announces indictments or findings that give Avenatti an opening. This is very much a good vs. evil saga, and Avenatti is David to Trump's Goliath. At the very least, Avenatti will raise further questions about Trump with elbows equally sharp. FWIW, the fact that he enters endurance races with professional teams is very impressive.

They are shrewd and hard bitten and able craftsmen. They also served as mercenary soldiers in the armies of the Italian States for centuries. I think that Donald Trump has met his match.

Well.....It's now been over 2 years since the Democrats have tried to bring Trump down. The media has been on a 24/7 attack. Republicans have also been trying to take him down. Including the primaries, over $1 Billion dollars has been spent trying to take Trump down. He has been the focus of multiple State, Federal, Senate investigations. He is currently under investigation by Federal Prosecutor Mueller who has hired, I believe, 13 Lawyers to assist. It's been over a year since Mueller took over the investigation and still hasn't been able to bring Trump down. Avenatti is in it for himself. He wanted his own TV show. There were talks he was going to get one, but has since died down. Trump has forever changed the face of politics. He is single-handedly bringing down the Democrat Party. As for the Republican Party, there is no Republican Party. There is Trump's America Republican Party and the ones against him. Either way I believe is going to get ugly. Millions have been spent to take him down, and if he remains in office after the investigations are complete, protesters will take to the street. If they attempt to remove a lawfully elected President from office, it will be even worse. There is plenty of time to indict him after he leaves office

There's no legal reason to be suing him. It is probably doubtful that Cohen could prevail in a suit against her for violating its provisions. One of the good things about Avenatti is that he uploads his court filings to Dropbox and posts the links on his Twitter account so we can all read them for ourselves. Avenatti posted the sloppy NDA Cohen drew up and the side letter that accompanied it, which was fascinating to read and clarifies that "David Dennison" is Trump, and has a blank line for his signature. So yes, Trump was a party to the NDA, and his recent financial disclosure required by law revealed in a footnote that he reimbursed Michael Cohen for the money Cohen, through his shell company Essential Consultants, paid to Stephanie Clifford - as well as additional monies that aren't specified as to their purpose. Not sure how you concluded Avenatti is using Ms. Clifford in his "personal vendetta against Trump", but he's precisely the kind of person we need right now to help bring the truth about Trump out into the light. With Trump acting as a wrecking ball to America's institutions, society and democracy right now, we sorely need someone - in addition to Mr. Mueller and his team - with the gumption and determination of Avenatti to expose truth to us, who is also much more free to speak publicly than Mr. Mueller. The US is a sinking ship and we Americans need hope. Mr. Avenatti is providing it. At the very least, even Trump supporters should want the truth, including the ultimate results of the Mueller investigation, if they have fidelity to America and our Constitution.

What's not to like about Avenatti? Nice writing by Mr. Shaer. We needed a knight and he shows up. It is not just liberals that dislike and fear Trump. Oldline conservatives like Scarborough also do not like Trump's ways and means. To see rallies where the President! insults people right and left to the laughter of the crowd - it brings up terrible comparisons. Where is Trump's vision other than hate and bile?. Avenatti seems very cool and even, fast on his feet and with his mouth. He is not a mini-Trump. Trump was a wannabe and grifter on the New York stage until he Peter-principle'd his way to the Presidency. I think Avenatti is the real deal, and I hope he goes far.

I like him. Wether he is in fact playing his cards right or wrong, you have got to give him credit for being the only person so far who is doing a 'Trump' on Trump. About time someone took on the "master" of social media manipulation and put a little spark into the pushback. It may just be a momentary media fling. But he is way smarter than Trump, Cohen and their cabal and will come out fine. He may have ego to match Donald's but he is not mean. Ruthless sure but not cruel like Donald. I wish him well.
