As a diver I cannot imagine navigating passages that would difficult on foot. The guys running the rescue are braving zero visibility that no light can penetrate, heavy currents pulling at their mask/air hose and trying to sweep them away, and the knowledge that if they get lost they will die. What an intro to scuba diving! The first boys rescued were very brave and news of their success will reach those remaining. This can only end well. Whew!
9
God bless these SEALS and the responders for doing this selfless act of love.
15
This inspiring story of heroism and the combined efforts of divers from several countries all willing to sacrifice their lives for these boys, should be contrasted with Trump who ridicules President HW Bush's program of 1000 points of light.
No one at this rescue sight would dare wear a raincoat which says "I don't care , why do you care?" But here in the USA a significant part of the population think community sacrifice and volunteering is a liberal left wing cause and would rather hang on the selfish slogan of MAGA. Maybe these American misfits can be inspired by the Thai rescue operation and see how misguided our president and first lady are.
25
I have no doubt Trump will somehow claim he swam with the divers personally to rescue these boys. After all, he would've rushed into Parkland armed or not to confront the shooter. He is the most important, the most interesting, the bravest person on Earth. There's nothing he can't do.
You know what the rest of us can't do? We can't look at the faces of Trump voters and acolytes without wanting to vomit.
While the drama of life and death continues in Thailand, we await tomorrow at 9 PM for The Huckster's big announcement: Who will be the sorcerer's apprentice? America's lemming-like rush into the darkest, deepest cave, the abyss continues . . .
16
Sunnyshel, This former Democrat and lifetime NYT reader voted Obama and Hillary. Next time, Trump. And nov 6, straight Republican.
Some commenters criticized the assistant coach for coming out in the first rescue group feeling that he should have been last after his charges.
The assistant coach might have absorbed dive training faster with his background as a Buddhist monk. Plus as a practiced meditater he would be able to stay calm.
Also, psychologically the chamber they are trapped in, however unpleasant, represents known safety and survival and the reassuring company of your friends.
Now imagine that you are a 15 year old non-swimmer and you are being asked to put your face in a mask and then submerge into inky water with only the touch of a diver to reassure you that you are not lost and especially not alone. Can't see, can't hear.
Under those conditions the coach might set a valuable encouraging example by saying, "I will go first and if I survive then you will know that you can too. If I don't survive then you can decide to stay here and wait for another way out. I will be the experiment."
We don't know anything about how the first group was chosen but I am certain that he didn't do a "Doctor Zachary Smith" (from Lost in Space TV series) and somehow finagle a spot in front of the rescue line. The seals aren't going to prioritize him over the children without good reason. I bet that he was "Will Robinson" and the kids trusted him to show the way.
13
Yes -- we don't fully know how the decision was made of who to bring out first. But we do know that the decision was made by a team of cave rescue experts who were taking into account logistical, medical, and psychological factors.
5
Officials changed their minds and decided to take out the weakest guys first. A doctor chose the order of who dives out first. A 13 year old boy was the first to dive out since he was in the most critical condition.
The coach was one of the other 3 chosen to dive out because he was also one of the weakest since he gave the boys his share of the limited amount of food that the group had with them.
13
This is an example of what we can do if we unite rather than divide. Let us hope we all learn from it.
14
It is sad that horrible situations like this are what makes us forget the daily horrors our politicians put us through. They also remind us what humanity is supposed to be.
15
Reminds me of reading accounts of the climbing sherpa's of the Himalayas. Without them very few would make it up and back down Everest, Lhotse, etc. However, these diving sherpa's aren't helping those who choose the glory of summiting Everest but of saving the lives of some beautiful children. Bravo!!
6
When all seemed hopeless, two British divers found the location of the boys....Their assistant coach, a former monk, taught them to meditate and gave them his food to help them cope and survive....Rescue team divers taught the boys how to swim in prep for the rescue....physician divers arrived, assessed the physical conditions, and made the triage list of the order in which the boys and coach would exit, based on their physical conditions.....The first four were successfully extracted, but it would be 10 hours before the next could leave. And for hours, none in the cave would know if the four survived the attempt.....And now it continues.
"Save a life, and you save a world". --Talmud
Every child is a world of possibilities, and sacred treasure entrusted to us.
Can we please really absorb that lesson?
46
Thank you for your words of wisdom.
8
I hope all the boys and their coach are safely rescued and no one else is injured or dies. then I hope that Trump doesn't take credit for it
9
He doesn’t even care. They are brown.
17
Just plain joy and relief to see whole world coming together to save the 13 lives without America's help. Now only we could get babies, toddlers and teen agers out of Trump’s “cages.”
29
As an old man. who has always had a terror of drowning or just being without air, I have not been able to to watch the minute-by-minute heroics in Thailand.
Everyone who has been involved there, at whatever level, deserves our love and enormous support.
Compared to our selfish lives in the USA, they are all miracle workers.
Thank you. Kob Kun Krub
26
The ongoing rescue operation has set an example for 'what we could achieve unitedly and save lives in the event of an unexpected and unprecedented'. Kudos to the world rescue team , prayer for the endurance and return of the trapped in the cave. Why don't we think and breathe the same air of unity to avert war on this mundane life?
15
This is why I always went on field trips with my daughter. No one cares about your child as much as you do. Why would they put these children at this kind of risk? Must say that I do admire the heroic efforts of the divers and SEALs though.
4
Man, this makes me feel a lot better about their plight. And the multi-national co-operation raises my spirits as well.
Hopefully all will come out ok. Yet I feel sorry for the family of the diver lost on Friday.
25
I'm sure I'm not alone in having been praying for these kids, their coach, the rescue workers, and the families.
As Donald Trump's administration purposely rends children of all ages from their loving parents who've just made a harrowing journey in the hopes of a safer, healthier, more productive life, this story gives such a joyful counterpoint to that dirge.
It's nice to see international groups come together for the welfare of those in trouble. It's something I used to take for granted about humanity, about the world, about people who sought roles in government. Selfless actions taken for the good of others they don't even know.
Thanks to all those involved for embodying the love millions—billions—of us feel for everyone in this situation, and Godspeed in getting everyone safely out, given medical attention and nourishment, and reunited with their families.
If only we could look upon every child—indeed, upon every adult—with this sense of civic obligation.
40
Part of the human spirit is the belief that problems can be solved.
29
Lovely comment, Karl.
7
Just a heart wrenching story that ,hopefully, will end well for all but the heroic diver that has already passed. From the first diver that bravely passed through a narrow passage in the dark to find the kids to those that are rescuing them today and tomorrow, I've nothing but admiration and thanks.
Let's not forget how brave the children and their coach have been. Imagine being in a dark cave for 9 days unable to leave. Somehow, they all persevered and had faith. Imagine being 12 or 15 ,unable to swim and entrusting yourself to someone who appeared from the water and said "I will take you to safety if you trust me enough". So young, yet so brave. Makes me cry just thinking of the bravery it takes to put your life in the hands of strangers at that age. This incidence says a lot about the human spirit. Lets all be good to each other for a while at least.
39
LOOK what we humans can do, together.
Let us take this inspiration to work together to accomplish great things in every facet of our lives together on this planet.
36
Godspeed to the rescuers of the Thai soccer team members. Following a hopefully successful rescue they could be recruited to help reunite displaced migrant children with parents in the US.
14
Good to see some names mentioned of people doing positive work. It's overdue, as we know the name of every school shooter, every famous criminal, but less often those who are bringing good to the world.
Here's another: Mikko Paasi, an expert diver from Finland risking his life to save the boys. #knowhisname
34
Very confusing updates. is the coach rescued, or not?
9
The coach was not in the cave. the assistant coach was in the cave
2
God forbid he called him the coach instead of the assistant coach, just like most of the news media.
1
Cgg is correct. The 5 p.m. update reported that 3 boys and the (assistant) coach were rescued. Now that report has disappeared.
1
For the past week or so, twelve children in Thailand have the rapt attention and appropriate supportive wishes of the world and the global media behind them.
Meanwhile in the US, the most horrific atrocity in recent memory continues as several thousand children (some as young as 12 months old, and many living in tent shelters that will now stay open “indefinitely”) remain separated from their families, causing immediate and severe harm that endures across generations through the lingering effects of trauma, while the attention of Americans – and the world – dwindles and nothing is done to immediately address the depravity and prosecute the perpetrators.
50
Those illegal immigrants to the US are criminals. They knew before they entered illegally that they might get caught, and charged with crimes. And people who are charged with crimes get separated from their minor children. Lets be
very clear: these people got what they should have expected. The parents caused the separation.
PEriod. They deserve absolutely no sympathy whatsoever. None. Their children are, of course,
alive an well, and in no danger of their lives.
Its time to call out, on every post such as the one above, the facts that the problem lies with people
committing crimes. Its time to stop demanding we be sorrow for them and tell them DON"T COME HERE ILLEGALLY.
And its time to stop posting such posts as I'm referring to in reference to totally unrelated stories.
Enough is enough.
7
Well said, Mozzarella. One can only hope that at the end of this administration, there will be some form of accountability for crimes against humanity, like there was at the end of WWII with the trials in Nuremberg.
16
How is it a crime to come to the United States and apply for asylum? We have asylum laws for just that purpose. Or were you unaware of that?
13
It is interesting to see how much world attention is focused on the rescue of these boys and the amazing cooperative effort aimed at achieving a rescue. Great to see and millions throughout the world are pulling for success.
Yet, the world seemed not to care much about girls kidnapped by Boko Haram or the Taliban, or about the gang rapes of girls in India. Males are seen as deserving of rescue and international efforts, girls not so much.
30
Yes it was a heartening effort in comparison to so many awful, hateful things happening everywhere. A very jarring note late last night in Sydney was to see some message from Trump. Cooperation is unknown among these far right hate parties and this man should have been silent but that is also foreign to braggarts.
11
Or the children torn from their mothers arms and thrown in cages in the USA.
12
You are comparing apples to papayas. Not the same thing. None of this is happening except for the professional divers. The girls are definitely worthy.
2
Such a remarkable contrast to our country... where migrant babies and children are heartlessly separated from their parents and placed into detention where they are not bathed or properly cared for and soon become filthy and lice-infested.
It is heartening to know that, in Thailand, human life remains precious and worth rescuing...versus in our country where only the unborn lives are protected.
42
The coach came out in the first group to save his skin. He should have been last. I hope he gets plenty of civil suits against him now from the families. This will keep other coaches from being so careless in the future.
4
Other news like bbc cnn report other wise
1
Perhaps you should read more about him. He probably saved their lives. He certainly did not scramble over them to get out first.
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/jul/07/parents-boys-trapped-thai-c...
2
It was my understanding the coach was going to come out in the last group. I also heard he was in the worst physical condition, not having eaten during the ordeal (giving his food to the kids). Perhaps a decision was made, due to his condition, he should come out earier? I don't know.
2
Aside from the urgency and risk, I would think this is a rescue diver's dream. Why else did you train to save lives underwater? Actually, I think a cave offers certain advantages. I would much rather navigate a cave looking for survivors than a capsized supertanker. This scenario seems down right picturesque compared to the Costa Concordia disaster. If the ship had floated off with you inside, the situation would be much worse.
I'm reminded of a story from an old friend of mine. He spent twenty years in the Marines and twenty years in the Coast Guard. He was some sort of engineer. Apparently, they used to drop him from a helicopter onto distressed vessels. One time, the crew asked him whether the helicopter was coming back to pick them up. He said "No. If we don't get this engine started before dawn, I'm going down with the ship just the same as you."
3
There is zero visibility in the cave because of resuspended sediment. It doesn’t get worse than that.
6
Try swimming through an oil slick. If you're still not convinced, set the oil slick on fire.
1
I'm a rescue diver, and this is no rescue diver's dream. Caves offer only disadvantages.
30
These brave kids have been on my mind constantly in the past days. Praying that they all come out in good shape. Appreciating the mammoth effort put into this excruciating task.
23
Why is this story getting so much coverage ? So many kids die every day who could be "rescued" from war, poverty hunger, malnutrition, inadequate medical care. But that doesn't sell papers so the corporate controlled major media doesn't cover it the way they cover this. I feel for the kids and their families but why is being trapped in a cave more newsworthy than dying under a bomb or rubble or because of lack of food?
17
Why? Perhaps because this news item is more "heroic" and thus more appealing to a wider readership than malnutrition, war, and poverty? I am almost apathetic to the global child mortality rates in some "third-world" countries. I cannot save those children, and I do not want to feel sad that I cannot save those children. But I do want to feel good cheering the heroic efforts to save these children. I suspect many others have similar feelings.
7
problem is our government and corporations have participated in and is partially responsible for many of those deaths.
2
It's a specific instance that can be addressed by a one-time action.
If a large bag of food is given to a hungry child, it won't (in most cases), save the child from starvation. It will only prolong the ordeal.
I certainly don't mean that we should not try to help starving children. However, it's not a matter of a short-term effort "fixing" a situation.
4
So #45 tweeted that the US has sent help for the rescue operation. Anyone know if this is true?
4
Good question. Also no other news like bbc or cnn has reported that the coach has been rescued . Only 4 boys..
1
Funny how he only tweeted about it *after* the rescue efforts got some kids out and started looking successful. He just wants his name attached to the publicity. Since when does he care about children separated from their parents?
4
Something like 15 nations sent help of various types: equipment, engineers, rescuers, etc.
2
Thank You Rescue Divers.
I cannot even comprehend the extent of your expertise and bravery.
You are wonderful and amazing.
30
Just when I am out of hope and completely drained with the state of affairs, our humanity surprises me out of my despondent stupor.
As important as this rescue is for the survival of these kids, our kids, it is almost as important for us.
36
The impossible becomes the inspirational.
25
Kids? How did we, in the U.S.A. get from NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND to NO CHILD BELONGS IN A CAGE?
What a magnificent, extraordinary, effort in Thailand on behalf of these children and their coach. May we admire and...vote.
32
This is a truly heartwarming example of how real news about desperate conditions can be reported in a positive, hopeful manner. Imagine, if possible, how this approach might be applied to even American life in general, without snide, divisive and polarizing tones. You can do it, NYT; give it a try!
7
What is FIFA doing to help? Is it helping with its massive resources? I would have liked to see some pause in the commercially obsessed world cup to show solidarity with these kids.
16
What “massive resources” FIFA has in regard to emergency response is beyond me. But yes, a recognition in honor the rescue would seem appropriate. But who are we say?
So why was the coach in the first group to come out? I thought the captain stays with the ship until all others are safe. What’s wrong with the coach?
7
I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Maybe he is very sick and also perhaps a Navy Seal was left in his place.
1
He gave the kids his portion of food .
Being an adult with higher caloric requirements as well as need for hydration he was most likely in the most weakened state.
Amazing the snark in these comments.
51
Some TV reporting said they brought out those most in need of medical attention first (although they did not specifically mention the coach). There are a doctor and a nurse with the remaining boys.
22
I can understand how its complicated but this long? If some of these divers were "expert" they should know what it is they need and get to it. These kids are probably more agile and able to get thru passageways then some of the old fat expert divers I saw interviewed. I can see it now, everybody jockeying for control because they want to be the leader while kids are waiting for their obsessiveness to play itself out. How is there not an air compressor on sight? I realize its not your hardware store variety but still, they've had enough time to get it together. 2 weeks, just to figure it out. The kids have been ready since day one. These skinny kids can squeeze thru anything the divers can. Squeezing thru isn't a skill, the rest is just breathe and move. Experts and leaders will get you killed then get promoted.
1
We are grateful for the distance between you and the caves.
64
You don’t seem to know anything about diving or caves, or have read anything about how difficult it is. There has been a massive amount of cooperation and goodwill from many countries around the world sending world class divers to the scene with the extraordinary expertise. These rescuers are to be commended not ridiculed.
50
Typical American we-know-best-the-rest-of-the-world-should-be-just-like-us attitude.
10
Who needs Hollywood's "Super Heroes" when these rescue team guys are the real deal, saving actual lives while putting their own lives in harms way.
22
The world needs this type of GOOD news right now. Sometimes we forget the goodness of humanity with all the information that is available, and it's times like these that we are reminded of what matters.
23
Amazing efforts in this rescue and, sadly, one hero who has given his life. I do hope that the caves will be closed or signs put up to keep others away and avoiding future disasters.
13
Years ago, my two soccer obsessed sons stood watching a group of boys in Chiang Mai Thailand. We were on a family vacation and had spent some time visiting and living in a Hilltribe Village. The boys, including my two sons, were the same age as the trapped soccer team boys. My sons were immediately asked to join the game and their two blonde heads were easy to spot as they ran, laughed and jumped with joy at the pleasure of playing their favorite game in a different country.
I think this is the spirit of sports. I think its this universal understanding that we all inhabit this planet, and if we can play together, we can rescue a group of boys stranded in a cave together. The lesson and challenge is to generalize this "spirit" into solving the conflicts between us--whether they are in Thailand, China, Russia, Korea or even Washington DC.
35
All my heart is with rescuing all in the cave, that means the boys and coach and rescuers, however that Thailand has such fearsome accidents during the monsoon season means that Thailand neglects safety and this must end.
2
"Four boys are out, 9 to go" - like the coach doesn't matter?
4
There are 8 children remaining, plus the coach for a total of 9. So the coach is included in the statement. Prayers for the safety and smooth exit of all the remaining team and rescuers.
4
There are 12 boys and one coach=13
4 + 9 = 13
3
That includes the coach. Twelve boys plus the coach makes 13 total.
3
"Do you know what I find most fascinating about your species? You are at your best when things are worst." Line spoken from an alien (played by Jeff Bridges in the film "Starman") who visits earth to study humans.
13
My thoughts and prayers are with those kids and divers!! Hope everyone makes it out safely!
8
At long last, good news on the front page of the NYT.
22
Such hopeful news. I'm so thankful some have been rescued and reunited with family. My continued prayers for the safe rescue of those remaining.
7
Awesome fetes of humanity; many of the best multinational super humans and care givers coming together in the name of humanity to same some very braves little boys and their team leader.
Many thanks to the Brits who found those little people and blessings to those families waiting for so long for their return.
12
"Thailand Cave Rescue Live Updates: Four Boys Are Out, 9 to Go"
This article grabbed my attention when I realized how many people had to come together to reunite these boys with their families. Nowadays it seems that there is an overall selfish mentality, and I enjoyed reading about selfless people coming together to aid this soccer team in a time of need. In my eyes, the divers carrying out the rescue of the twelve boys and their coach can be considered heroes. These divers are risking their lives swimming through Tham Luang cave, which is extremely difficult to navigate and is known for having cramped spaces. Divers also have limited oxygen. This would be difficult to accomplish alone, but they also have to care for players from the team who don't know how to swim. Anyone would have to be awfully brave to take on this responsibility, knowing the risks involved. One volunteer diver, Saman Gunan, died when he ran out of oxygen in the cave. Gunan died for a cause greater than himself as a volunteer, and he helped reunite a family. The world needs more people like this, people who aren't self-centered and selfish. I believe there needs to be more of an effort to work in cooperation with each other. This event in Thailand shows that we are capable of accomplishing this and becoming unified for a greater good, and now we must face other problems collectively as one.
20
Many of the volunteers are military personnel. Too many forget that the men and women of the armed forces, the police, fire departments, ICE, and other first responders are usually such brave selfless individuals. I also add to the list the many billions of parents and grandparents and other family members who have led lives of giving and sacrificing for their children, grandchildren or other members of their families and communities. Goodness does abound, but the media often likes to promote more sensational stories that give a distorted view of humanity.
7
ICE (immigration and customs enforcement) are not first responders and do not belong in the same group as the others you mention. I would research that agency and its mission before you lump them in with firefighters, police, and the military.
25
Nor should we include the military, who kill and destroy far more often than they save and build.
This may not go over well, but here goes any way:
Thousands of children are dying each year from starvation, neglect, abuse, etc. In Thailand alone, my sister said that she read four children drown each day because it is considered unsafe to learn how to swim! In a water logged country it is considered unsafe to learn to swim! Think about that!
Yet, here we are - America and the rest of the world - obsessing about this 12 Thai boys trapped in a cave with all the requisite resources of police, rescue operations, news coverage, etc. that goes along with such a misplaced and misguided obsession! It just like when that little girl fell down the well in Texas!
This all goes to show how completely skewed our perspective has become - as well as what we are devoting finite resources to - in our media obsessed age. Absolutely shameful!
9
Yeah - it doesn’t go over well. They’re kids man. If you can’t get behind that or you think oh well whatever then you are truly lost.
9
You’re right, they don’t deserve to be rescued, let the parents deal with it. Wow! Get a heart, man.
8
As to your main point about thousands of kids dying: what did you do today to save a kid? To make a difference? Screeds in the NYT about how we shouldn’t care about 12 children in Thailand aren’t going to save the thousands you lament about being ignored. I bet if you went out and did something about the things you say you care about, your heart might be recoverable.
29
Best wishes, thoughts and prayers, the world has become full of empty words to throw around.
Who doesn't want kids not to die ?
Who does not want kids not to die in Yemen or Syria or on a boat either ? But these ones have gone out of style or so it seems, quick let us drown our guilt under this new tweet trend.
5
Most people with a heart do not want any children to die anywhere under any circumstances.
15
The real Incredibles - the team that has devised and is implementing this daring and complex rescue. An international team the gives real inspiration to a troubled world.
But please stop with the stories about how the coach "loves those boys". Yes, good for him that he's helped them survive all this time, but it seems to me that going caving when monsoon rains and flooding occur is simply irresponsible and reckless. He has a lot of questions to answer if he gets out, including one he should ask himself about the loss of a rescuer's life.
8
Apparently it's a cave they're familiar with and have explored before, and while there are signs suggesting to not go in starting in July, it was still June when they entered. Also, rains were not expected at that time.
9
I know nothing about laws and rules in Thailand.
In the U.S., maybe you can take a 16 year-old spelunking without parental consent, but not an 11 year-old. So, perhaps the coach had parental consent for the trip.
If so, where's the blame?
1
It's equally reckless to have a gun in your house around children too.
Just saying..
5
We are all grateful to the volunteers who run from the most distant places to rescue the kids. These kids are all our kids, reminding us there is only one family, the human family.
38
Kudos to the brave rescue workers from across the world, one of whom died.
But I must say this should have never happened. There were signs that said to stay away from the part of the caves where the young boys and coach are trapped and the coach ignored them. How could an ADULT that was responsible for 12 BOYS lead them into such danger? And now, because he ignored the warnings, a Navy Seal is no longer alive.
Let's hope the rest of the team makes it out safely.
7
The warnings said not to enter after July 1. They went in before July 1. Maybe read before you unleash your judgement.
39
A little angry, Elaine?
The sign said do not enter after July 1. They entered in June. Considering Climate Change, that date should probably be moved UP to some time in June, but they ABIDED the notices. They didn't ignore any warnings.
14
Yahoo! Thank You to all the brave rescue divers. The risk they've been taking over the last 2 weeks makes all of you true heroes. 9 to go. Keep positive everyone, they'll be out safe and sound. Btw , that location is in the "infamous "Golden Triangle"... look it up. Trading between countries- that's an understatement.
5
Don't forget about the coach--he needs to be rescued also. That makes ten to go.
3
Oh, my--I'm so amazed! So happy for the boys and their coach and their families! Please supply more details on how they are getting them out. This is an unbelievable courageous rescue!
19
This is HUMANITY
28
The alert on my phone woke me up but I was so glad to see good news . Bravo to all to make this happen. BUT I’m really hopping those kids and their coaches would continue to live to where they’re have been living and keep on living. They would be just fine. I’m saying this after reading an article about what happened to some of the girls have been kidnapped by boko harm in Nigeria. That some of those rescued girls are taken to some charities in America to live in America. But they are taking those girls on speaking program around the country to talk about their “experiences”. I’m sure some of them are paid speaking (I’m sure won’t go to the girls). Experts say that it wouldn’t help them to cope. Talking about it in front of an audiences ...all the time. Even thou they don’t want to do it but they have no other options.
1
This is not really news, it is info-tainment. What a fun story of suspense!
Later, we can talk about the lack of sufficient signage at the mouth of the cave (let's try multiple signs at different locations all saying stay out).
Let's talk about the coaches who led their young charges into grave danger.
Then we can talk about how the above actions led to the DEATH of an experienced rescue diver.
But for now, let's just have fun with the drama!
4
All disasters requiring rescue probably involve some form of insufficient signage or questionable adult supervision (though I don't think we got the full story yet). All heroism probably provokes some armchair snark like yours, and the millions of eyes rolling in response.
17
Will Hogan -your comment is off. They obeyed the sign.
Unfortunately the rains came early .
Remember , this coach kept them alive and helped them meditate to stay calm and be in the right frame of mind to go with the divers.
The man is a hero .
Accidents happen
27
I have to assume from your comment that you have never done anything reckless in your young adulthood. Never gone over the speed limit while driving and potentially jeopardizing others, never jaywalked, never, ever done anything except obey all rules, all of the time.
14
With the rescue of 7 (according to a recent comment from a Thai citizen) there is hope the others will make it out alive. I believe in miracles and already there have been 7. Let us pray for the remainder 6 miracles (those remaining) to occur to. Hope springs eternal with prayers included.
The people who are aiding in the rescue and there are many are heroes. It restores your faith in mankind. Life is so precious. They deserve a round of applause.
4
It appears that Elon Musk's latest effort at grandstanding was a flop. Musk's condescending attitude and behavior toward the Thais is being revealed as the Thais prove themselves very resourceful and very capable.
15
50 of the 90 divers are foreign, so I'm not sure why are you attempting to paint his noble efforts as some "Thailand doesn't need any outside help" screed.
6
Its taking twice as long as it should.
For goodness sake. In a period spanning days—days—he and his team developed a capsule for transporting a child through water. It was not ready in the extremely brief timeframe needed for the rescue, but may be useful in other disasters.
1
Thank God. With all the bad news that consume us on a daily basis, I welcome this as an A+ on your final.
6
It's not God. It's human rescuers. One of which gave his life.

Truly, may God's grace shine upon them. I'm not that religious, but I pray to my God to rescue these kids and their coach, and that in the aftermath they will be OK. God bless the rescuers, all the help teams, and especially the poor relatives who have waited so long to see their sons come out alive. God bless and help them all.
9
Thailand, you have restored our faith in humanity and have shown the world what bravery and teamwork is all about.
15
The silver lining of this tragedy, if there is any, is that the US has not been neither needed nor welcome to use this tragic event for nationalistic self-glorification. The Thais are more than capable of handing the situation, far more capable, in fact, than the US was of rescuing Americans from Katrina.
12
Rescuing 14 people in a defined location vs a million people spread out over hundreds of devastated square miles. Seems like a reasonable comparison!
2
I agree with you regarding the horrible response to Katrina, but take it you have not read about the many divers from other countries, notably Britain and including the US, playing a major role in the effort?
2
Here we are seeing the best of humankind. Rescuing children to return them to the arms of their parents.
15
I don’t use this word lightly, but this is what heroes are made of, right here. The calm resolve of the boys and the skills and selflessness of the adults is awe-inspiring. Best wishes for a full and fast recovery all the way from little Boise, Idaho.
30
When it is obvious that people are in dire need, we as humans (almost to a person) feel compelled to help in any way we can. We do not turn away and confront the problem, no matter how great the obstacles may be. We come together.
Now, let's do this for ALL people in need.
32
Godspeed these young boys and their magnificent coach.
God bless these rescuers.
It's time to celebrate this human endeavour.
So, I am distressed to read comments below about America not offering assistance.
I was just now watching BBC where they interviewed a guy from Florida who is coordinating this world wide response of volunteer divers.
They also showed American servicemen emerging from a vehicle.
Not to mention Elon and his team already arrived.
From what BBC is reporting - we are indeed there.
And also, let's face it, in some countries, American response teams are not welcome - because often, we bring too many resources and sometimes insist on being leaders. There is a mixture of envy in resources we can bring in a short order.
So, while celebrating this endeavour, let's not denigrate our own country.
We need to defer to Thai's on what assistance to accept.
11
The US Airforce sent their very highly train Special Forces team.
1
Blessings and praise for the young 25 year old coach, who apparently is a former novice monk. I read that he taught the boys to meditate and be silent and still to conserve energy and also has given his portion of food and water to the boys. God bless all of them, and I pray they all return safely.
44
This rescue effort restores one's faith in humanity. It also shows the superior results that happen when people of different nations and faiths and color and skills work TOGETHER.
The rescuer team as a group should be nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. Not only are they working hard to save this young soccer team and coach, they are bringing the world together at a time when the US leadership is working just as hard to rip it apart.
56
If one may call it "leadership".
Apologies to the world for what the pitiful-excuse-for-a-human-being we have in the White House is doing.
I have never been so embarrassed to be American, though I was not alive during Japanese internment.
1
Complete strangers continuing to put their own lives in great peril in order to rescue and save others. Their acts define what love, honor and courage is all about. I have such deep admiration and respect for every member of these recovery teams and their selfless acts of bravery and compassion. True, honest and wonderful role models for the world to emulate. Thank you for putting the lives of these kids and their coach ahead of your own.
43
In the good ol' days, the United States would have been among the first to offer help in rescuing the young soccer players. These days it seems to be all about "what can you do for me"? Everything's transactional. Deal or no deal. And of course if our support ended in failure, that wouldn't look good for our country's image as the big "winner." It seems all the world's a stage for D.T.'s reality show.
44
Let us never forget the dozens of brave rescuers among those who still need to get out safe and alive.
33
I’ve been following this story since the boys were found and I’ve been struck by the courage, determination and generosity of the Thai people. Everyone in the local community helping in any way they can.
I’m turned off by Elon Musk and what appears to be a publicity stunt to hijack the news story to make it about him vs. the boys. Where was he 10 days ago?
18
I disagree. I think it is wonderful that a visionary wants to help with technology and ideas, in a situation that looked impossible.
34
They were only found six days ago, so I imagine he was doing what he normally does. God Forbid someone does a good deed.
10
I know this is half a world away, so reporting may not be in real time. But I am hoping for safe rescue of all who are trapped, and no more casualties among the rescuers.
14
How wonderful! Can you imagine how the kids are going to feel looking up at the sky again? I hope there is counseling for these young men because I expect that PTSD will raise it's angry head. I don't imagine they'll be that anxious to go into enclosed places in their futures.
But let's get them all out first and worry about their tomorrows when they are all safe. Carry on brave divers.
15
Hope the rest of the boys would be saved instantly.
1
Kids can be pretty resilient. I would not rush them all into counseling. It's possible some will have PTSD, but we shouldn't assume it.
1
“‘Twas Grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and Grace shall lead me Home...”
31
The best of humanity is on display!
43
Bravo to all those involved in the rescue. This shows all the great things a team can accomplish.
17
I’m sure the coach feels terrible about allowing this to happen. And I’ve read that the parents are sending beautiful messages of support encouraging him not to blame himself. To his credit, in the face of a terrible situation he was able to keep all the boys together, alive and safe.
62
For people who didn't think humanity was capable anymore of doing big things... these rescuers and support staff (coming from all over the world) are literally forging a miracle right before our eyes.
They're made it possible because they've sidelined politics, pride/egos, religion, socioeconomic backgrounds, nationality, etc., in the service of a much greater, much more noble good.
What a different world it would be if we had people like this in the United States Congress.
51
Beyond just imagining.....we, in America desperately need rescue from the massive predation by trump and “his type”. Millions of us have tried to stop him, and his like, from his predation, to little avail. There is likely, someone with deep, honorable connections who could contain the trump contagion. There could be HEROES here who lead us from our vile contagion, like these rescuers in Thailand. I alone, have not made a big difference, but someone here could be the ONE. Help us. If successful, you could help us save our own country, and the world at large, from the trump sickness.
9
No words can express my disgust for the vile creature, Trump, and even more that he receives the support that he does. It's sickening and sad that the fate of the country, and to an extent, the world is being determined by the most inferior people in the nation.
Joy, gratitude and tears of joy. Thanks to all who planned the rescue and the divers who risk(ed) their lives to bring the boys home safe. Courage, love, community, family at their finest.I hope these boys heal well and can move forward without this defining their lives.
15
Like so many others, I cannot put this evolving story of fear, bravery and compassion down. My heart goes out to all those still in the cave, their families, and the rescue team and their families.
But I keep coming back to the hundreds of families, parents and children, that our country has torn apart at the border. Adequate records appear not to have been kept of parents or children, or have been lost - some of those families will never be reunited. That's a story of shame, not bravery, that I cannot put down.
58
Yes, Bon, that story of shame and pure evil, I cannot put down either. I cannot wait until November 6. Meanwhile my thoughts and prayers are centered at that cave in Thailand.
5
Where is the participation and support from the government of the United States of America; from the President? Did I miss something?
It's a great relief to see the boys begin to come out - now our hopes, wishes, prayers for the safety of those remaining.
37
The USA is there too
8
I have been wondering the same. Thanks, rdeadle33.
7
Yes, you missed the POTUS tweet this morning: "The U.S. is working very closely with the Government of Thailand to help get all of the children out of the cave and to safety. Very brave and talented people!"
Just another excuse for self-congratulation. His tweet embarrasses me as an American. I wish POTUS had said something that reflects my feelings and probably those of most Americans:
I want to express my caring for the brave kids and their families. I want to thank the Thai and international divers that make up the majority of the rescue team. I want to express my sadness and gratitude for the Thai diver, Saman Kunan, whose dedication to rescuing the kids led to his death.
16
The Times' coverage of this compelling story is commendable. The world is holding its collective breath in the hope that the rest of those trapped and separated from their families are rescued. This is humanity at its finest. And to think, no DNA tests will be necessary to join them with their loved ones...
55
Thanks to/for the universe of good will making these rescues happen. Prayers to the universe that the others will be rescued soon.
36
As someone who has experienced the gentle and positive nature of Thai people for more than 20 years, I am in awe of the selfless efforts of all the rescue the stranded children and their coach. Thai people have an unlimited capacity for giving; it is on display for the entire world to see.
57
Not only the Thai people. People from around the world are helping.
1
And some of them can't even swim.
It's impossible to imagine the courage each boy must find within himself, to undertake the terrifying ordeal of the exit trip.
59
As I understand from an "expert" I saw I'm not sure where -- maybe on BBC -- not being able to swim isn't quite as serious as it might seem -- the big ssue as being able to breathe and remain calm using equipment they are given.
1
I was thinking of the psychological dimension, not the technical one
In these difficult times, it's nice to know that sometimes there really is light at the end of the tunnel, both literally and figuratively.
57
Honeybee-you need a teaspoon of honey to sweeten up some
7
Life is indeed difficult for many Americans. There are a great many Americans who are not well fed at all, surely you are aware? Particularly children. Moreover, the United States has used its tremendous power as the world's largest superpower to wrest children from the arms of their parents, then carelessly scatter them god knows where, and can't even find half of them now. I suspect some of them have found it difficult.
1
I admit that even Trump's incompetence and corruption have not kept food off the table.
However, the contrast between those who are giving of themselves, and even risking their lives to help, and the self-serving, self-aggrandizing, petty little con-man we have for "president" couldn't be more clear.
1
How wonderful for them and their families, and how awful for the rest of them and their families.
Hopefully everyone will come out of this OK.
Amazing and terrific work by all the rescuers and their associates! Condolences to the family of the diver who perished while helping to save the trapped.
19
My pessimism got the best of me yesterday, and I didn't think the outcome here would be good given the circumstances. So happy to wrong right now!!
I recently read the full article on this story with the graphics explaining why exactly this was so difficult. Not only is cave diving very dangerous, this is one of the most dangerous cave diving places currently. 12-hour roundtrip, 3 miles through powerful currents with pitch blackness, and openings two feet across. And yet, the rescuers did it for the children.
62
Such beauty in the courage, generosity, and skill of the divers and planners and the joy and gratitude of all of the rest of us is a (as one commenter put it) "cosmic," much-needed reminder that the selfish, destructive leaders of various countries actually are in the minority.
37
Just reading what these kids will need to do to swim out gives me an anxiety attack. May they all be rescued safely.
26
Me too, but I kept reminding myself that kids are often much braver and more resilient than adults. Me, personally, I'm in my mid-50's and I wouldn't go more than 10 feet into the mouth of a wide cave - I'd never venture further in, let alone crawl through narrow passages or dark tunnels. But when I was 12, I would have been thrilled to do so, and if you'd suggested I swim through murky cave waters, I'd have said, "Sounds like fun!" Working in the boys' favor is the fact that they probably do not really understand just how dangerous the rescue is. They're probably, for the most part, pretty up for it and not nearly as scared as adults might be.
3
THIS is what life SHOULD be about. Period.
41
Terrific news to wake up to this morning! Well done lads! What an ordeal. The world is transfixed, and collectively hoping to see everyone else on the surface soon.
Grandma says: "No more spelunking for you!"
14
May Thai rescue diver Saman Gunan rest in peace.
"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends"
112
Gunan's family and his country should be very proud of him.
12
I would amend that to "lay down his or her life for strangers",which is what Saman Gunan and first responders all over the world do daily.
1
Some good news for the world. Amen!!
21
All the reports on the amazing rescue being carried out in Thailand mention that a team of Brits are spearheading efforts along with the Thai Seal Teams. Additionally Seal teams from Australia Chinese and Japan are reported as aiding the rescue. One retired Thai Seal has tragically lost his life. However there has been no mention of US Navy Seals. Can the NYT confirm that US Seal teams are on the ground?
18
U.S. Air Force Special Forces, (and Musk's engineers) are there. I don't know about U.S. Navy Seals.
Gonna make one helluva good movie!
4
How wonderful to read about the good things people do when they reach out to help each other. There is still goodness and decency in the world. Not everyone is obsessed with self-enrichment.
56
We live in an era in which the term "hero" is tossed about lightly and, often, undeservedly. Just because someone is in the military or law enforcement services (I'm a retired cop) doesn't make him/her an automatic hero.
But these divers are, indeed, doing heroic work. The bravery involved to attempt and stay with such an undertaking is enormous.
Regardless of the ultimate result which, of course, we all hope will be complete success, the divers are deserving of endless praise. My heart broke when the one diver lost his life. Talk about "selfless". Would that our country wakes up and finds its humanity and compassion again.
138
This article interested me a lot because even though this is happening in a complete different part of the world the story is known everywhere. People not just in Thailand are praying so are so many others around the world. I picked it because even with all the issues in the world people are trying to help these 13 boys in any way they can. Showing we still have unity and can work as one. Even though this event is tragic and life-threatening it's uplifting to see us all come together through the kindness in are hearts.
34
Hoping all get out safely. Wonderful to see the kindness of people around the world coming to aid the people of Thailand rescue the children and their coach - the British divers, Elon Musk offering engineers to assist, and others. We are all rooting for a successful mission.
26
I am as excited and hopeful as most who have posted here. But I am also amazed about the outpouring of support for twelve kids from Thailand as compared to the refusal of support for refugee children who have suffered tremendously. Refugee children deserve our compassion as well. As do the 25% of children in the US who live below the poverty line.
115
Excellent points!
18
There has been an outpouring of support for the immigrant kids, from both inside and outside the U.S.
The fact that we have a miscreant for "president" does not mean that there are not a lot of concerned and angry Americans.
Of course, PhoebeS, we're not to confuse another presidential free-publicity photo-op for any move toward true compassion for American youth, for Yemeni, Syrian, Guatemalan youth who might merit equal attention were such a priority of current WDC regime.
1
One of the things that has touched me the most about this story is the generous and loving spirit of Thai people. The parents, in their darkest hours, writing a note of support to the coach. The children - who must be scared and a little bit miserable in there, writing loving notes to their parents and telling their parents not to worry. I lived in Thailand a long time ago - and always appreciated this culture of caring for the feelings of other, valuing and loving children and families and just a big emphasis on community and taking care of each other.
171
If this was in the United States the lawyers would be circling like sharks. The parents would be blaming the coach and everyone else. In the quest for more of everything in this country we have lost more of our humanity than anything else. The Thai people could export their humanity as it is sorely needed here.
62
@paradox - I totally agree. And it would be around the clock news analysis of who is legally liable. Then there would be the legal battle over the "story rights." and on and on. I hope that americans keep our toxic culture of liability, blame and greed away from these families.
7
Some would, some wouldn't.
"Should" the parents have responded as they did towards the coach? I don't know enough about the situation to have an opinion.
However, I certainly agree that an "automatic" inclination to blame, and a willingness to sue "because I can get something out of it", regardless of ethics, is disgusting.
I am in awe as I watch how many people have come together to reunite these children with their families.
May their power and spirit envelop every being on the planet, allowing families everywhere to be reunited.
62
I was an elementary educator for thirty years. There is nothing more precious than kids. Seeing this effort is so heartening. There is hope for the world.
65
We are transfixed by the love and support for these children. WE are people of the world. We come together at this time not ordered by governments but by our own heart. This is who we are. This ordeal by these children sitting in darkness in a life threatening situation has once again reminded us that we are human and we are kind to strangers. We do not need governments to tell us how to behave. No. We need to tell our government, each one of us on this planet we share, that this is how THEY need to behave. We need each other just as a child needs food, clothing, shelter AND LOVE.
I am overwhelmed with the divers willing to put themselves into this potentially deadly situation. They hear the children's call and they respond to try to save the children. These people are heroes. They come from different countries, practice different religions and speak a myriad of languages. But, under the water, in the caves, with their oxygen tanks on their back they are one. My the world bless them with a good life filled with more good deeds. May the children go from strength to strength. May our governments learn from us. THIS IS WHO WE ARE-AND THIS IS HOW THEY NEED TO BEHAVE.
125
Thank you for your thoughts sharing. I’m from Thailand and I feel so overwhelmed as well while reading how other people view this situation.
19
Bravo bravo bravo. Thanks to all the brave and gracious people involved in the rescue, and to The Times for reporting the story(íes). It’s so important to read GOOD news, for a change!
50
With so much selfishness and “me first” in the news, it restores my faith in humanity to see such a collaborative effort and so much bravery and selflessness in action. I cannot imagine going through those tunnels or what those kids and the coach have endured. Praying this ends with all 13 and all the brave divers out of the cave and safe.
85
This is a global opportunity for hope, faith in human goodness and courage accompanied by gut wrenching worry as we await more news re. rescues. Commenters who want to make it more than that - please, not today. This is not the time.
32
It is of course wonderful that these boys are being rescued.
Now if there were only similar effort and concern about the many millions without adequate nutrition, healthcare, housing and education.
41
I was elated to learn of the good news and am keeping the prayers going that everyone is brought to safety. I cannot say enough for the very brave, undaunted divers, emergency personnel and volunteers who answered the call. This is a moving inspiration for people to come together -- heart and hands -- to help those in crisis.
29
Thank God! Along with the rest of the world, I've been watching, hoping, and praying for the successful rescue of these boys. The cooperation between the experts on site - the divers, the spelunkers, the Seals, the doctors - everyone working together has been amazing, and is bringing a successful ending to this terrifying story. Well done thus far, and God speed, guys!
34
Thinking of them every minute. Thoughts and prayers seem appropriate here.
19
Glad to see this has not become a media circus as so often in the US.
Thai government gets Kudos for the planning of this heroic effort. Didn't ever expect Thailand to have its own Navy Seals and first class health care system.Of course Trump has to imply US gets credit for successful rescue.Maybe some more paper towels are needed?
64
Ignore him. I wish the press would.
1
Please do not forget that the Thai government is a military dictatorship that has imprisoned hundreds for calling for their basic human rights such as free speech and elections. In Thailand "attitude adjustment" means being forcibly taken to an army camp for "discussion". I don't know if the Thai govt have done a good job planning for this rescue or not, but I do know they have done a good job of maintaining their corrupt, illiberal and backward looking system which keeps NGO's like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International busy cataloging their illegal actions.
4
If Trump claimed credit for the U.S., it was only because he really means that HE deserves the credit.
I hope that all Americans helping in the effort are bending to Thai leadership (unless there is a VERY good reason not to), and apologizing specifically for any remarks made by our "president", and for him in general.
In a time where bad news is the daily norm, I was heartened to wake up to fined the headlines stating that some of the boys have been successfully rescued. The world is sending it's prayers and hope for the continued success of this mission and the full recovery of everyone.
19
It's definitely not the main point of this story, but are they really using oxygen tanks? Reporters have been saying oxygen tanks, but scuba divers normally use compressed air.
17
They are using air, as reported earlier.
1
They are breathing air. Oxygen can become highly toxic
below approx 20 feet seawater.
3
The Times said air, at least in articles I just read. ABC-TV said "oxygen" a few minutes ago, 6:30 p.m, Sunday, July 8.
That everyone everywhere has responded so lovingly toward these children makes me hope that there is still a basic decency we all share.
29
Hoping all of the boys make it out alive. Such a frightening circumstance! The international effort is an inspiration to see reported. Congratulations to those who are able to respond and make such a beautiful thing happen, and to those who are providing the objective journalism. In my own small way, each day, I will take each example of compassion to heart and be a participant in this fabric of life. Thrive. Be kind. Resist the observable self-centeredness beyond the perimeters of this moment at the mouth of the cave.
18
What good news to wake up to. Waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the next phases.
10
If this had happened in the U.S., at least one of the families would already have filed suit against the soccer coach who led the boys into the cave, and Trump would have tweeted that they are all "crisis actors." You may call that cynicism, but you also know both of those scenarios would be possible.
50
I don't think you're being fair to Trump.
He wouldn't call them all "crisis actors".
Only those who are not white, or don't have Republican parents.
We all owe whatever superstitious petition to whichever mystical being we have some affinity with, to provide a safe & successful rescue operation. An epic undertaking!
Unless you have ever had the opportunity to explore a cave system utilizing a professional guide, it is unlikely that you can truly understand the terror that combination of threats will present. I did it once with an outfit in South Central Kentucky. Never again! And that was without any evident threat of flooding. I'm am (was) an arrogant, overly confident athlete (with a history of injuries to document my illusions) The spelunking thing completely overwhelmed my adrenaline addiction and drove me into white water kayaking. I never looked back.
The military divers conducting this rescue possess courage and a sense of service that defines the outer limits of human capability. We should marvel and express our gratitude that such capable and courageous men are willing serve in time of need.
51
I think it depends on the person.
I've been spelunking in deep, and obviously pitch black caverns, sometimes with only a few inches to spare, above and below, so that crawling was difficult and slow (and turning around utterly impossible), and I didn't find it particularly scary or overwhelming (though, after crawling, it was a relief to reach an area where it became possible to turn around).
At times it was necessary to wade through water, but being underwater (head submerged) occurred only once, and for less than 10 feet.
On the other hand, I tried white water rafting once and that was enough. I never tried it again. Too scary.
Nevertheless, I having to scuba for hours is a whole different matter, and I really do take my hat off to the courage of the rescuers.
Just a note to the writers & editors: the interactive maps clarified the cave structure and helped greatly to show just how challenging the rescue attempt is. How much determination - guts - it takes for divers to get in there and risk their lives to save the young men waiting.
58
I had been thinking of a more conventional scuba setup -- where one wears a mask over eyes and nose and the air enters the mouth through what's called a regulator (from a hose on the tank). That would require the inexperienced survivors to hold their breath while one tank is replaced and a "new" mouthpiece would be put in their mouths. That would be frightening and risk choking on water in the exchange. I was fearing that would be really dodgy. BUT, they are using full face-masks -- so the divers would simply take the hose off one tank and attach to another tank and the child would not have to hold their breaths, keep water out of their mouth, etc. Indeed, that full-mask strategy is what's making this possible.
23
God bless the amazingly brave rescuers and the Navy Seal who lost his life in the effort. Better men than I.
37
As the rescues unfold, the world is watching and sending love to the rescuers and the rescued: simply human beings caring about other human beings.
23
Four out-- excellent! (But that would make me only about 31% relieved.)
9
It's dawn here in Hawaii and I was almost afraid to open my laptop this morning, knowing that the rescue effort is underway. When I saw the headline that four boys were safely out of the cave, I burst into tears. It can be done! Godspeed to the rest of the boys, and their coach and to the amazing team of brave and selfless rescuers.
73
I must ask.
What's the story with red dirt? :)
God bless the children, the coach and the rescue divers. May they all emerge from the cave safely.
22
Wow. 8 more to go. Great news in a time when it seems we only get awful news. Lets hope the rest come out swiftly and safely!
13
Nine - don't forget the coach, plus the docs an others who are there as well. There are still a lot of people in there. May the rains hold off.
9
God bless those kids, their families and the courageous first responders.
21
This rescue is feasible because experts from all over the world came together to plan and execute this mission. Going it alone may have made this mission impossible.
I am heartened to see the international cooperation in an age where bad actors ( yes, you Donald) are trying to tear the world apart with trade wars, threats and lies. One day, Americans may need international cooperation on our behalf and it may or may not be forthcoming, given the wreckage piling up from the twitter temper tantrums. Only time will tell.
55
I am grateful for the success of saving some of the boys. Now let's hope the remaking boys get out and everyone boys, divers, coaches and anyone else involved with this difficult rescue are safe at the end of this rescue.
Good news never grows old....
16
There was a sign posted at the cave's entrance, warning people NOT to enter during this time of year due to rain. WHAT was that soccer coach thinking? He endangered 12 kids and indirectly caused one death. Hope the rest make it out okay.
2
The group entered the cave (and expected to exit it) outside of the date range contained in the warning. A storm struck unusually early this year.
The coach did nothing wrong. What occurred was unfortunate happenstance.
50
I don’t see how blame helps this situation
14
Apparently, Thai police disagree. The assistant coach exercised terrible judgment for a "team building" exercise and IGNORED warning signs. Monsoon season typically starts in July; they are believed to have entered the cave on 23 June.
"It is thought the 12 boys and their coach entered the cave on 23 June, before a sudden monsoon flooded the network.
Thai police are investigating whether the coach should face criminal charges for leading the boys into the cave, Sky News reported. Warning signs discourage visits to the cave during the rainy season. Tham Luang cave is one of Thailand’s longest and toughest to navigate, with snaking chambers and narrow passageways." -- Source: TheGuardian 3 july 2018
Good news for once. I am happy the boys may be all out safely and thanks to the rescuers. Going into a cave is not a smart thing to do. I once went into a cave in a foreign country and learned it was full of bats.
2
I once X-rayed Trump's head, and had the same experience.
Hallelujah...
Let’s hope
for more
good news.
18
Believe. Miracles really do happen. May the Force be with them.
23
Bless them all and keep them safe.
19
Wonderful news! Let’s pray for the others that are still in the cave.
11
Kapunclap! Thank you rescuers and to the Thai Navy SEAL hero. Nice to see people coming together--while the globe watches in agony--and anticipation of their cave emancipation.
20
While this is very good and encouraging news whatever reckless adult fool or fools led them into this cave in the first place must be identified and held accountable after a proper inquiry.
1
Oh, geeze. Let's hope the coach, who's only 25, makes it out safely before we start denigrating him. In fact, let's not denigrate him at all. He made a mistake. I'm sure this will always weigh on him.
14
Thailand’s monsoon season (rainy season) unexpectedly started one week early this year. Also, this 25-year old coach that led these boys into the cave is reportedly the weakest - the most deteriorated - of the entire group because he gave to the boys his share of the small amount of food they had with them.
18
nomatter what the situation, it is always a good idea to let responsible adults know where children are---if I read correctly alot of time was lost just finding them because their bikes were outside the entrance.....critical time lost.
How unfortunate that some of the comments on this extraordinary rescue are reflexively tainted by comparison (including mine) to the fool. I suppose he only likes kids who don't get trapped.
12
7 were out 1 hour ago.
22
Eric, keep us updated; the world is praying for them!
3
People helping people: Never gets old.

Bless the brave people, divers and boys both. and seal up the cave when they are all out!
5
I just heard six are out now.
4
Thailand, the whole world is with you today.
35
It would be nice if the Nobel prize committee gave some thought to the careful planners involved in this rescue effort instead of the usual weird list of "achievers".
50
Rain, rain, go away.
18
Coming out of this I see twelve future Thai Navy Seals.
15
I was thinking that too! Also, I guarantee you at least a couple of them will become fanatical about caving.
1
This is good news because it shows that it can be done. The rest is up to fate, like with everything else. Thanks to all those who kept trying.
22
I am cautiously optimistic only because it was - allegedly - said that the healthier boys were rescued first.
The rescuers deserve our respect and thanks for putting their lives on the line for the boys.
Godspeed, everyone.
27
I was wondering about that. It would be heartrending to have to make those decisions. Do you take the strongest first? The weakest first before they become even weaker? It seems that they know what they're doing. I just hope they all make it out.
16
I asked my wife, an expert scuba diver and NYC-area diving instructor (I don't dive), about this.
She speculated that the first one or two "extractions" would be experimental, a learning process for the rescuers in understanding how to navigate the obstacles with a "victim" in tow. She said this would be better done with a healthier boy.
Then, sharing what was learned with other rescuers, developing a protocol for extracting weaker, less able children -- a rescue which might involve additional equipment and thus an even more complex procedure.
These divers have what my wife called, "A cosmic level of skill, unknown in recreational or even Antarctic research diving." (Her background.)
Godspeed to everyone.
18
The weakest boys were rescued first.
10
What an example of how to step up and come together to take care of children in need. We are all watching and hope this message of hope, courage, strength and unity is louder than our current leader’s mission to divide us. May the children and rescuers be blessed with a safe ending.
76
This is one of those moments that the World unites in a great gesture of humanity. I have such incredible respect and admiration for the divers. Praying for the boys and their coach!
96
Wow, what great news! When I last read about it, they hadn't started. I hope the next time I check more will have emerged. Just thinking about their predicament made me feel panicked and gave me great anxiety! When they are all out, it will be good news that the whole world can appreciate - sorely needed at this moment in time.
50
It's wonderful to see the degree of international expertise being pulled together towards a common goal. Four saved so far, I await the rescue of the others … soon. May all the families be reunited in joy.
87
Wow, so glad to wake up to this news! Some day this will be a movie and I hope the 'true' ending is that all of the boys, the coach, and the rescuers make it out safely. And that they highlight and give tribute to the one diver who died in the early operations. Truly heroes.
64
This is such encouraging news. There is hope now for these trapped children and their coach, that they will be rescued.
While we have watched this intense rescue effort unfold, I could not help but reflect upon how this administration and its supporters have cruelly spoken about and/or treated the children who have been separated from their migrant parents. Where is the concern for them? Where is the concern for the poor children in this country who need rescuing? Where is their universal health care promised by Trump?
Thailand does have universal health care coverage which was instituted in 2001. It has been funded by a general income tax. It has effectively reduced infant mortality, decreased worker sick days, and lightened families' financial burdens. Here in the U.S. Trump has all but destroyed the ACA and it was just announced that insurance companies will not be reimbursed for billions of dollars spent last year. All this to say, that in this country we really do not value human life. We give lip service to valuing it through murmuring "our hearts and prayers go out to (fill in the blank)" when a tragedy occurs. The accumulation of wealth is all that matters. Thailand obviously does value human life and has taken on the challenge of preserving it, just as it has taken on the effort of rescuing these boys and their coach trapped in the cave. Would we do the same, or be told it was too costly, but our heats and prayers go out to the parents?
166
Please stop and rejoice! Don’t make this about another topic and Trump.

It is encouraging that your post received 1 "like", while the post that you criticized received 162.
This hopeful pot of technology, hope, perseverance, faith, and skill is powerful stuff. As I go about my daily business, there is a portion of my mind, my energy, present with this part of the world. I know I am far from alone in this. The human spirit, when focused on where it is needed most, can move mountains. I — we —will not breathe easy until the last boy, and the last diver emerges from the cave.
113
These first rescues are the result of detailed planning and heroic efforts by an international team. My fear is the returning rains will make a dangerous process riskier for everyone and even jeopardize those remaining in their small alcove. Even with the best laid plans, sometimes a little luck makes all the difference.
25
Think positive!

Beyond just the incredible level of bravery and expertise on the part of the rescuers, both Thai and international, the entire operation seems spot-on efficient and meticulously planned.
Also impressive was the decision to ask the media to move away from the immediate area of the rescue operation. Doing so seemed to put the safety of the boys, as well as the right to privacy for them and their families ahead of international publicity over the rescue effort.
What a contrast to last September when we watched aghast at a photo-op of you-know-who lobbing paper toweling into a crowd of hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.
Fingers crossed that all of those young boys and their coach are brought to safety soon, and perhaps some good lessons here in disaster management for the Trump administration.
193
Yes, it's been an incredibly impressive, professionally handled operation all the way. I figured they removed the media because the families need privacy when reunited with their boys - or, god forbid, if one did not make it.
"disaster management for the Trump administration".
How about disaster management OF the Trump administration.
It is encouraging to see that the world can still come together in a joint effort to save innocent lives and avoid a tragedy.
They are not all safe yet.
The task is still daunting.
The human spirit is indomitable when it needs to be.
127
I believe that astronauts on EVA are prepped with or have injectable suppressants for vomiting, sneezing, nose running, and may have mood modifiers against panic, fear, and claustrophobia. I trust those options known by physicians were available.
15
The tireless efforts of all members of the rescue team are finally being rewarded. May the rest of the boys and their coach - and all of the rescuers - make it out safely. Truly this is a moment where we should double-down on our collective thoughts and prayers for more miracles. This has to go down as one of the most amazing feats of selfless heroism by rescuers ever conducted. Godspeed.
128
It is wonderful to see such international cooperation, and it has helped enormously from the looks of it. Holding my breath that all of those poor children and coach can get out safely...but they certainly will take a while to recover from the trauma of the experience.
Would that other efforts requiring international cooperation could work so well...and there so many that need just this.
140
Wonderful news! But Trump, by his tweets, seems to be taking credit for the rescue. Not at all surprising.
179
No one on his team would dare correct his notion that this is all about him.
5
Is that a joke? What is sad is that it should be, but there is actually a high likelihood that it is not.
7
truly unbelievable.
1
Swimming miles underground in cramped conditions is something very few of us are capable of doing.
110
Yes. I'm claustrophobic. Just the idea of being trapped in a cave makes my heart pound. The idea of being a kid, trapped there for days, and then needing to swim underwater in the dark through cramped spaces for two miles is just unimaginable. It's all quite remarkable.
22
It is indeed a remarkable feat. Let's hope that all of the boys and their coach make it out safe. It is mind-boggling how the British divers were able to locate the boys. We had hoped there would be no casualties but alas, Saman Gunan heroically lost his life.
As far how incapable most of us are in saving these children in these conditions, George Orwell, we are remarkably good at sitting by while thousands of other children are ripped away from their mothers (and fathers) after they trekked hundreds of miles escaping the vilest dangers and tribulations. Need I tell you, the journey that these people took is also something that very few of us are capable of.
13
Hopeful news. We pray for all the boys and the coach to be brought alive and to recover fully ; also we pray for the courageous rescuers, one of whom has already paid the ultimate price.
This is a wonderful example of international cooperation and how we need help from each other in difficult times.
As a Brit am very proud of the two British divers who found the boys and are continuing to contribute their expertise.
305
Wonderful to be reminded that there is good in the world, that humans, when challenged, can solve complex, daunting challenges. I wish we approached more problems with such care and attention. Bravo to the soccer team and the rescue team!
428
If these brave rescuers can actually pull this rescue off, it will be the sort of good news we all desperately need in these troubled times. I've got my fingers crossed!
158
This rescue is the definition of heroic and the relief that the first families reunited with their children must be tremendous. My best wishes to the boys, the coach, the rescuers and their families.
This rescue effort is such a stark contrast from the ginned up anger and hate that has been directed toward so many less fortunate people.
341
What a magnificent reminder about the power of the human spirit, the human brain and human teamwork to problem-solve.
These divers are incredible heroes.
One of them, Saman Gunan, lost his life trying to save these boys— what a saint !
568
and for that reason...while i hope they all...make it, the rescued should be reminded that Saman Gunan gave his life for their errors in judgement..
1
Indeed James I'm sure nobody else will think to twist the knife in these boys after the suffering they have undergone. Perhaps you can see to it.
1
You're very presumptuous.
IF there were errors in judgement, they were not those of the boys, certainly not the younger ones.
I suspect and hope the boys will feel bad, and deeply grateful, but not guilty.
The world has joined together. If ever there is a sign of
profound humanity, this is it, following this extraordinary journey.
Let us thank the brave, experienced, skilled rescuers and let us thank all the world for holding these boys and coach in their hearts.
Thailand, we are across the globe from you physically, but we are with you every minute, every second.
284
Any kid, anywhere in the world, is worth this.
368
Well said. Thank you.
1
One would hope the effort would be made for adults, also. Nevertheless, I share your sentiment.
