English City, Stunned, Tries to Make Sense of New Poisonings

It is curious how there Russian chemical warfare attacks seem to appear when Theresa May is at her most deeply involved in negotiations to sell 17.4 million 'Leave' voters down the river. Can you spell "Weapons of Mass Distraction"?
Mat (Kerberos)
I’m awaiting the inevitable, “the government did this to create a distraction!!1”. Before you do though, three points: 1) We are already distracted by the football. Perhaps Scotland & Wales aren’t, but I doubt the goings-on in Wiltshire makes much difference. 2) Distracted from what? The Brexit debate? Sorry, it’s all over the news already - most of it by cabinet members themselves using the press for their own subtle leadership campaigns. We hear nothing but disaster and of the incompetence of the govt 24/7, so one should wonder why ‘they’ created a distraction now when they have (1) to do that (unsuccessfully). 3) Despite this article, this story is not exactly dominating the national conversation. The football is - that and the heat. Yeah, the media pay it lip service but we’re far more concerned at the likelihood of a hosepipe ban and whether Sweden will put up a bad defence. Maybe there’s a few dark jokes about summer picnics with added novichok, but not much else.

Really? A supposedly Russian operative just tossed the nerve agent leftovers or a jacket in a dumpster? Even common thieves know by now about DNA, fibers, chemical residues and other micro-evidence that can be left behind in such cases. That's why they torch the stolen cars. This entire thing was cooked up for pubic consumption to look like a spy thriller. Even this NYC article can't miss the obvious - "The mystery has captured the attention of much of the country". That's the whole point!

Meanwhile, eight USA Republican politicians headed to Russia on July 4th to make friends with those who are apparently our nation's new allies. We are not only lying in bed with our former enemy: we are reproducing them as quickly as we can.

And this waste bin has never been empty in 4 months? I guess the guys did a lot of diving in 4 month- accumulated waste to come in contact with the disposed poison.
Ladyrantsalot (Evanston)
Who says the assassin threw out his extra nerve agent 4 months ago? His attempt to kill a Russian double agent occurred 4 months ago but he could have thrown away his extra supplies a few days ago.
Name (Here)
We have the first two, father and daughter, and now these two dumpster divers - who was the middle one if these two are thought of as 4th and 5th?
Joe (Toronto)
A first responder police officer.
Braddock (GB)
It appears the couple poisoned had found the discarded container that the Russian assassins discarded months ago. We were wondering if you could get Donnie to pick it up on his visit to UK and drop it off at his meeting with Putin? We'll gift wrap it of course.

Richard Guthrie, the coordinating editor of CBW Events, a website on chemical and biological weapons, said he would “put it in the 90-percent-plus likelihood that this was a discarded item,” like a coat with a container of the nerve agent in the pocket. “You would want to dispose of the coat, of the gloves,” he said. “If it was good tradecraft, that would have been disposed of in a place that people wouldn’t think of it being disposed.” The couple might well have picked it up, spotting “a nice-looking jacket bundled up.” Sorry, could somebody explain this statement? So, where those professional killers disposed the coat - what place that people wouldn’t think of it being disposed? Where the victims found this coat three months later? Why would those professional killers would leave nearby a nice-looking jacket bundled up, and even more - with a container of the nerve agent in the pocket?

Either England has a serial kiler who must be a current or former employee of the chemical weapons industry (like America's anthrax serial killer) or its security state operatives have chosen to target civilians in a scheme to prevent their crime against the Skripals from being revealed.
Michael (London UK)
If we accept those two as possible then we also have to accept the more plausible thesis that the Russian assassin didn’t dispose of his novichok residue correctly. Other than that you and I have exactly the same amount of information about this terrible event.
Sparky (Orange County)
The Russian denials sound exactly like Trumps. I guess the Russians trained him a little too well.
Stefan Brun (Chicago 60625)
I am probably being dense but: Why are these "the fourth and fifth" victims, rather than the third and fourth?
Nicky Chapman (Kirkland, WA)
A policeman was exposed investigating the original event. I believe he has recovered.
Stefan Brun (Chicago 60625)
thank you kindly, Nicky!
Ellen (London)
Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, who was exposed responding to the crime, and was hospitalized for several weeks .
DougJ (Bellevue, WA)
The Scripals were poisoned in early March and the evildoer is evidently long gone. Dumpsters are typically emptied on a frequent and regular basis. Hence it is implausible to assert that a contaminated item would have been found in late June in a dumpster.
Memory Lady (NYC area)
I assume the theory for the delay in the disposal is that the poisoner held on to the chemical weapon for a while and then disposed of it after the initial furor over the spy poisonings died down, perhaps to make it seem like the initial poisonings were the work of a local serial killer, rather than the targeted Russian revenge killings they were.

but the question, in this case, is why the British police didn't arrested the guy. They did make the suspect and said he left the country. I guess that shows they got it wrong, and brings the question what else they got wrong
Mat (Kerberos)
No-one asserts that. If you read it again you will see that the “dumpster-diving” figures only as speculation by two people who knew the victims. A trash bin has been sealed, but then most police searches examine those. So far it is all merely theories being explored.

Both places are suspiciously close to Porton Down, nerve agent capital of Britain.
Geof Rayns (UK)
Maybe Portion Down made these toxics on contract to the KGB/FSB too?
Mat (Kerberos)
Yes, Porton Down made it and LBJ was the one who planted it while driving a white Fiat planted by the CIA on the orders of Prince Phillip. Kubrick filmed it but you can tell it’s a government fake because there’s no stars and the flag is clearly waving when there’s no wind in Wiltshire. Honestly, conspiracy theorists. It would be hilarious were not these silly attempts at muddying waters a benefit to those who actually perpetuated this

When will the world stand up to Russia? It’s not too late.....yet
yulia (MO)
like world stood to Iraq when the UK along with the US accused it having WMD. Of course, the whole World had to pay for consequences of these standing.
gpickard (Luxembourg)
It seems like whoever poisoned the Skripals tossed the leftovers or residue /protective garments in the waste bin and this guy came in contact with it.
Jim (Houghton)
It's pretty obvious the Russians re-poisoned in the neighborhood so as to make the earlier attack on ex-spies seem less like an act of revenge and more like, "Hey, you people have a nerve-agent problem over there."
yulia (MO)
Or British focused on the wrong target and missed real culprit
Anthony (Los Angeles)
No. Russia is responsible for this and Putin was so looking forward to his World Cup Finale.
