I too love Martina. A long time ago I saw her beat Venus Williams in the Oakland Coliseum. I was struck by the way she effortlessly danced over the court. Venus was very heavy-footed at that time. That game was the treat of a lifetime for me. Of course, Martina was the winner.

I love her so much. Thanks to my mom for having me watch and play tennis when I was little.

In terms of Martina’s tennis and how she has lived her life I have nothing but respect and admiration for her. I do object to her demanding the same pay as John McEnroe for their tennis commentating. John is simply better and and should receive more pay because of his ability and talent. It should have nothing to do with their gender.

I love you forever, Martina.

When I was a fearful closeted 12 year old in 1978 and gay people were literally invisible, the Book of Lists counted just three out celebs: Elton John, Billie Jean King and Martina. That tiny crew gave me hope. More than being just a fan of all three I lionize these legends who had the integrity and courage to stare down a hostile world and stake their claim to equality and greatness. Thanks for consistently giving millions like me hope and strength, Martina.

A champion in every sense of the word and a personal hero of mine. Martina always inspires.

Thank you Martina for your incredible courage and athletic abilities. You have been an inspiration to me in coming out as a gay man. A note to the author, no oner says, "revealed her homosexuality" - "disclosed her sexual orientation" or "disclosed her lesbian identity" is a much, much better and accurate way to say this.

The world needs heroes and Martina Navratilova will always be one of mine. She is brave, she is bold, she is a beautiful specimen of the human race.

Thanks for this thoughtful article!!!

The rivalry/friendship between Navratilova and Evert goes down as one of the greatest examples of good sportsmanship in the history of sports. And oh ya, it also produced a lot of great tennis!
John DM (Canada)
Navratilova has always been an example of fine sportsmanship and simple courage. Great story
