NK is waiting for a Check. From Michael Cohen.

I'm sayin', trump Chickened Out.

Reevaluating policy and adapting a new one to address new realities is not within this administration's DNA. Instead, expect more petulance, bullying, bloviating, and saber-rattling. And more living on the brink.

Trump's cancelling the meeting was just part of his negotiating style to put pressure on Kim. Kim now has lowered his belligerence and is showing how amenable he is to the meeting and how much he wants to get things done with America. People are blinded by their hate of Trump and can't see the forest through the trees.

It will be interesting to see how Trump responds to NK's carefully crafted statement. There is a little bit of flattery and a little bit of taunting. Whatever the response, I predict it will be in ALL CAPS.

How can you strike any sort of a deal when neither party can be trusted in the slightest? If any "deal" is ever reached it will be completely meaningless, because neither side will abide by its terms, although each side will trumpet (pun intended) its great victory. Come to think of it, each side will trumpet its great victory if no deal is reached as well.

“With its carefully worded statement, North Korea appeared to shift the blame to the United States while trying to create an impression that it was the North Korean leader, and not Mr. Trump, who was the mature statesman” Choe Sang-Hun belongs on Trump’s team - viewing responsible statements as “creating an impression”. The author could teach KellyAnne Conway a little about alternative facts.

Are the readers of the NYT so blind to their own bias they see a man whose family/regime who has starved and abused their own people for decades as the sane one? It’s manipulation people. N. Korea has been a world pariah since the 1950’s for a reason. I am by no means defending a boorish Trump but come on, realize your own cognitive bias and who has more to gain from a Summit. Trump is a minor league bully compare to a diabolical Kim.

whether one wants to believe that Kim is presenting a true self rather than an image... his audience more than anything are other countries of the world. he seems to be very astutely raising his stature in most of the rest of the world. at the same time that the United States is withdrawing from the rest of the world.

Nr. Kim just gave the president a lesson in diplomacy and international negotiations. Being humble, gracious and forgiving. the North Korean leader understands the need for a conciliatory message, not the hawkish tone and approach of the US delegation. Again, Mr. Kim emerges as the adult and the winner here.
J (Buffalo)
I disagree. Actually, the opposite is true, that is Trump gave a lesson to Kim. Kim's regime threatened canceling the summit while called Mr. Pence "Ultoogi" which NYtimes translates "stupid" . It is more than stupid, it is a very derogatory Korean term expressing born-stupid or dunce. Trump responded it efficiently although radical. Now Kim is toning down. Kim' regime is not a normal 'administration'. A regular and courteous diplomacy will not work for them.

Trump, used and abused, by “Supreme Leader” due to his big mouth and oversized ego. I predicted this would happen as did many others. Diplomacy is nonexistent in Washington because Trump has the audacity to say that only he knows best how to solve problems, while,in fact, he knows nothing about governing. It occurred to me this morning that if he survives his presidency, when he eventually dies, he will be lying in state at the rotunda. That thought makes me sick. Of course, there is the possibility we will all be dead as a result of nuclear wars with Iran and North Korea.

Kim, the sane one. Thanks, GOP.

Just shows how the North Koreans know more about Trump and the Americans than the other way around.

It really says a lot about not only our president but also his staff that the WH comes across as childish and immature with all of this and someone half his age who actually wields the absolute power DJT seeks comes across as refined and reasonable. You’d think we live in the tyrranical cesspool if you didn’t know better...or maybe this is a premonition of what’s to come in the world order? (Trembles)

Let's face it, Kim is not just creating an impression ... relative to Trump, Kim IS being the mature statesman. And given Kim's history, that says a lot about our president.
Robin M. Blind (El Cerrito, CA)
Uh...you write: "...trying to create an impression that it was the North Korean leader, and not Mr. Trump, who was the mature statesman trying to salvage the diplomatic process...". Just my opinion, of course, but Mr. Kim doesn't need to try very hard to leave that "impression". What "diplomatic process" was Trump trying to move forward when he sent out John Bolton to rattle on about "the Libya model"? What do either Bolton OR Trump know about diplomacy?
Deb (Boise, ID)
Mr. Trump has worked himself into an embarrassing corner. May he surprise us and find a route out that is not disastrous.
Plumberb (CA)
Trump and Kim Un deserve each other. This would be comedy save that the people of both countries deserve neither of them.
André (Montréal)
Kim is a clever one. He does play the news media and the world well. From where I live (Canada), it makes Trump look like the one being out of control and immature.
EE (Washington DC)
In this case, Kim is the mature statesman. That's how far our country has fallen, being led by a tantrum-throwing, self-absorbed, unthinking baby.

NK is more able to voice sanity than is Trump. We may not agree with their record on human rights, but we should at the very least see NK Kim as able to reason, as not impulsive. He may murder his own people (and I condemn that) but as a negotiator he clearly outranks Trump - whose narcissism and impulsivity put the entire world at risk. I am no foreign policy expert. But as a citizen of the world I hope and pray that we can sideline Trump and allow the leaders of NK, SK, Japan, perhaps the EU, and whoever else can join in goodwill, reasonable diplomacy to navigate the peninsula and the world out of a dangerous situation. Trump is the worst wildcard so-called “leader” on the planet. He is dangerous, dangerous demogogue. NK Kim - with his nuclear arsenal - is a danger. But he obviously has more ability to restrain his behavior than does Trump. Please, let the adults do diplomacy. But sideline the erratic, unpredictable, untrustworthy Megalomanic in the White House!

mr Kim will end up in International court some time down the road, right now he and Donald can pretend to lead..

Kim Jung-un has acted as the adult in the room whereas Trump has and still is acting like the child. We should be the last people to back away from the table thereby showing the world that we gave everything to this peace process. As it stands now, we are the ones that can't be trusted. If we fail to go back to the table and there is a military action because of it, we will be labeled the aggressor in the eyes of the world and that is not what the USA stands for.
