I could care less about nepotism, Svengalism nor media manipulation those are canards of the jealous and the haters. The challenge is the Pop is maximalist and this isn’t. Lorde emerged fully-formed on her first EP, and while this bedroom pop might appeal to indie rockers and hipsters, this ain’t going on the Hot 100 as it’s paltry (in compared to hits) YouTube view-count attests. Despite what we hear about bedroom pop and how modern recording allows anyone to produce a song, show me any recent pop hit that hasn’t come out of team-song-writing and produced in a professional studio.

"Allegations of nepotism are nothing more than thinly veiled sexism, also here's how her dad introduced her to a record executive who instantly signed her to a 12 song deal". Dope songs though

Am I missing something? Why are the comments so cruel? I just watched “Pretty Girl” and it sounds unique and fresh. It’s so easy to be mean behind a computer or a cell phone screen.

Being an old fogey, it took me a while to figure out what a "bedroom pop singer" might be. Apparently, it is a singer who makes video recordings of themselves while inside their bedroom and then posts them online for popular consumption. From her success, I have to assume that she can now afford a professional recording studio if needed. How much longer will the NYT be referring to her as a "bedroom singer"? Just wondering.

What am I missing? Granted, being a woman of a certain age, but this music sounds profoundly boring. Why would anyone want to listen to singing that barely gets off the ground. I guess I don't get it.

I guess it's okay to listen to this stuff if you're like, 12. My concern is that so-called adults actually listen to this stuff, watch it, and like it.

As usual in show business, it's all about nepotism. Not about your talent but who you know. Nothing new here.

You have a right to pretend your well-managed, wealthy-parent-funded music career (and the resultant fame) came from your bedroom. Just expect all the consequences of fame (TMZ should be fun!), don't expect anyone to believe your lies, and don't you dare then complain that someone shared your song on the torrent website du jour and not your well-DRMed streaming-music publisher, who is like totally not your publisher because you're like SO ☆indie☆ you can just, like, die of all the independentyness while you also siphon money from Patreon and Kickstarter.

sounds cool - like Ivy or St. Etienne don't worry 'bout nay-sayers , without new talent THEY'D be done for.
