‘The Americans’: How Will It End?

Philip and Elizabeth will defect to Stan, who will engineer their placement in the witness protection program. They will be relocated to Fargo ND where they will open a Cinnabon franchise, since Omaha had no vacancy. On the side, Philip will join the local Arthur Murray Dance Studio and become their best-ever Texas Line Dance instructor and Elizabeth will become a locally renowned hair stylist and open an Etsy storefront selling wigs. Henry will single-handedly win the Stanley Cup and then go on to become a travel industry mogul and venture capitalist, taking large stakes in the nascent TripAdvisor and Airbnb. Paige will become a nun and make her way to India to become a Mother Teresa acolyte. Stan Beeman is so humiliated he resigns from the FBI and together with Renee, they open a Cracker Barrel franchise somewhere in deep West Virginia where they spend the rest of their days working side-by-side baking country biscuits 18 hours per day. Mailbot becomes the Director, FBI Counterintelligence Division, taking over from Dennis Aderholt after he went mad and retired on disability after being blocked from exiting the elevator by the malfunctioning mailbot and elevator door during a snap government shutdown. Oleg returned home and becomes a transportation oligarch and leader of the Russian disinformation 2016 campaign that swung the US Presidential election to one Donald Trump. Claudia is forced to take a job as Metro Moscow Squirrel Catcher. And Martha, poor Martha.
Magda (New York, NY)
The sad version is that Philip dies in Elizabeth’s arms after an FBI shootout, and she says “You never should have done this.” He says “But then I wouldn’t have married you.” Elizabeth is dragged off by Stan to be deported to Russia (like her real life counterpart). Paige is left alone because Stan doesn’t know she was recruited. Henry is still clueless. Stan vows to adopt Henry. Renee and Paige exchange knowing looks so we know Renee is also a spy. Claudia is stirring a pot of home cooked rat stew when Stan enters to arrest her. She doesn’t look surprised. Cut to Gabriel on the phone in Russia. He hangs up and looks over at Martha. He says “Martha, you’re going to have a roommate.” (It’s Elizabeth). The question is: who gets all those wigs?
pat (boston)
Stan’s girlfriend kills them all. I know that’s dark, but there has to be a reason she was on the show.

After watching the first season again, and observing how Henry, then 10, clocks a bad guy with a bottle so he and Paige can escape then coolly tells Philip and Elizabeth a bald-faced lie about where they'd been, I'm still thinking Henry is a young KGB sleeper agent nobody knows about except whoever is handling him - and maybe Rene....
ROBERT COHEN (KINGSTON, NY)
I believe (and hope) their daughter and son will stay alive. But perhaps they will both confront each other with guns and kill each other at the same time. Or Stan will capture both of them and put them in prison - well, since they are murderers of quite a few folks, maybe they might face the death penalty. But since this is Gorbachev time maybe there will be more forgiveness than in the real cold war days. Maybe they cooperate with Stan and help him round up other American/Soviet spies like the old lady who seems so sweet but is loyal to the killer country of the Soviet Union. Best ending might be if both the man and woman after being caught, agree to join the FBI/CIA and help them through the Putin years catch the purveyors of Russian spies and those that choose to collaborate/collude like some we will not mention who now lead our country. Great great acting and glad they are in real life married. The boy and girl should go on to act in more tv shows, bway, off-bway. The writers should be celebrated for their clever and involved writing, the composers for the music. The Russians have rarely done anything decent in world history. I come from a Russian/Jewish background - and altho many Russian Jews cooperated with the Soviets and tried to survive - many did not and escaped to the USA, Israel and other countries. There must be something in Russian water that poisons the minds, souls, and hearts of otherwise good people. Shalom, Cantor Bob

Since they were filming their last episodes by my apartment in Washington Heights I believe it will all end either on Overlook Terrace or my basement laundry room. I think they will be arrested by Stan et al and told they will be deported back to Mother Russia. It would be very sad if any were killed. Remember, they were soldiers. Paige is left with Henry to begin her chapter in a spinoff series as a spy.

Philip and Elizabeth are allowed to live so that Paige can join the State Department and become a double agent. Sequel!

An ending that would punish P&E for all the people they murdered would be for Henry to be killed in a crossfire. However, this ending would also punish us, the viewer.
PrairieFlax (Grand Island, NE)
Henry is American-born and therefore cannot be deported. Give Arkady credit for being the architect of Oleg's work. And for once and for all, Stavos (no r in his name) is not Greek.
Ed (New York)
One of many possibilities: It turns out Renee is Directorate S, an implant from the Center. (To keep an eye on Stan, and protect Philip and Elizabeth.) After Stan confronts and captures Philip and Elizabeth, Renee intervenes to help them escape. Philip asks what’s going to happen to Stan. Renee says, Philip knows what has to happen. She’s going to kill him. So Philip or Elizabeth has to stop (kill?) Renee from killing Stan. The line in the promo “Can we trust him?” is about Stan letting them go get Henry, and not turning them in after they save his life. But Stan’s line: “I’m going to kill them.” We’re supposed to think it’s about P&E. I’m betting it’s not. (And yet, assuming Renee is from the Center, her mission may have just changed to killing P&E, not protecting them. What a great show.) Or my favorite possibility (which won’t happen): DEUS EX GABRIEL.
Trish F (GA)
Paige has been completely indoctrinated, so much so that she commits to the cause for life in her discussion on the street with Elizabeth. Her relationship with her mother is very contentious; meanwhile, she has formed a close relationship with Claudia. I think Claudia is going to tell Paige that Elizabeth is planning to defect and Paige will be assigned to kill her.
fast/furious (the new world)
At this point, I have no idea. I want Stan and Dennis to be alive at the end. Anything else would be gravy.
Kim (USA)
Final scene: Oleg and Stan on a ship headed to Russia. Everyone is dead except for Henry, who the writers forgot to include in the finale.
Surella (NYC )
I think the cyanide capsule comes into play. Elizabeth and Phillip are surrounded and she takes the pill before he can stop her and then he shoots himself. Paige is seen starting an internship at the state dept but we're not sure whose side she's on. Same with Stan's girlfriend. We're just not sure.
[email protected] (Gettysburg PA)
Based on the Anna Chapman affair of 2010 I think all the 1980 Soviet illegals (including the entire Jennings family) will be declared persona non grata and sent back to the USSR just after the Gorbachev coup and prior to the collapse of the USSR in 1991. Martha will be sent back to the U.S. to stand trial for espionage... along with Edward Snowden. Stan's girlfriend Renee remains under cover as a KGB illegal and becomes the new mole at the FBI as Stan retires. The chaos of the Putin era begins and a New Cold War begins. America is flooded with a new breed of tech savvy Russian illegals. It ain't sexy, but its realistic.
Clark (NYC)
One of the Three Jennings Elizabeth, Phillip or Paige will die. I believe it will be Paige. Stan's girlfriend, Renee is a Russian agent and will kill Stan when she knows he is on the the Jennings.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Someone's got to die in the end - it's the Hollywood way. I think either Phillip or Paige or Stan will bite the dust in the end. This will be one of the more anticipated and intriguing endings for me in a very long time. Cannot wait for tonight's final episode.
Colleen (NM)
Three recurring items of the season must be dealt with: the list of car registrations that has been referred to repeatedly, the cyanide capsule, and Paige's inadequate preparation for the realities of the spy trade. I predict the car registration list reveals Renee is a spy, Paige dies after overestimating her combat skills, and Philip and Elizabeth split the cyanide capsule after extracting a promise from Stan to watch over Henry.
S. Alexander (Brooklyn)
As Stan closes in, Philip and Elizabeth return to Russia, each making a sacrifice in order to stay together (Philip gives up America, and Elizabeth gives up spying). Paige goes with them (maybe). Henry stays in school, with Stan to take care of him. No one is thrilled, but life goes on.
S. Alexander (Brooklyn)
So I kinda nailed it, especially on the "maybe"!
Peter (Portland OR)
Philip and Elizabeth are cornered by FBI. Soulless Elizabeth goes out Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid style, guns blazing and gets killed. Philip holds back, maybe he’s wounded, but as always is more worried about the kids’ fate. Philip is apprehended and jailed. So Claudia is out there, could be revealed by Philip and does yet not know P and E are hors de combat. Renee is also a deep cover Soviet agent. She’s supposed to wait to be activated by Claudia and is isolated from other agents. Philip does not know about Renee, but Stan lets slip what happened at the OK Corral. Renee violates protocol and warns Claudia who manages to slip out of US a step ahead of FBI. Philip now trades with Stan. Everything he knows about the illegals and other Soviet agents, the Center, the plot against Gorbachev, total info dump, in return for new identities, and no prosecution. Paige is ok with that since she’s done with Mom, wants to start over again. Clueless Henry is fed a line about Dad’s business disaster now with a “hiding from the Mob” story added (Paige is cool with it cause she’s already learned to lie convincingly). Plus the Feds are paying his school tuition. Renee waits to see which way wind blows in new Russia before surfacing again. Will Philip be asked to recontact his bosses to offer to work again as an agent - now a double agent for Stan?
Harry (New York)
I think Stan finds out the truth about Elizabeth and Peter, but Renee turns out to be KGB and working for The Center. When she tries to kill Stan, Elizabeth and Peter kill Renee and save his life. Then they plus Oleg save the disarmament agreement between the Soviets and the US. Peter, Elizabeth and maybe Paige go into witness protection for their help (but Stan is still really mad/conflicted about the whole thing) and Henry decides to stay at St Edwards and leave the family. It would be a little pat, but I don’t think I want any of them to die.
JD (Minneapolis)
Elizabeth, Phillip and Paige rush to save Henry and whisk him off to Moscow via Canada. He has been waiting, but not to leave with them - he is a double agent, working with Stan this whole time. But no! He’s actually working for esteemed character actress Margo Martindale, who takes off her silicone face mask and was actually Gabriel this whole time. They all get to defect to Russia and start new lives. I’m going to kill them!” says Stan, muttering all the way to Siberian prison, where he is reunited with his friend Oleg, who has been released in a prisoner exchange with the FBI (but not for for Stan). The two are able to smuggle out a Pulitzer Prize winning piece from prison predicting the end of the Cold War. Meanwhile, Martha’s daughter is accepted to the Bolshoi ballet company and years later, gets to travel to the US. Martha accompanies her and they quietly start a new life as a ballet teacher and a secretary in suburban Maryland. Martha and the mail robot are reunited in a romantic ballet pas de deux in a scenic but nondescript office hallway.

What a great show this has been. It could end in so many ways. I do believe the show will leave the door open just in case another spinoff idea gets accepted. 1. Philip flips. 2. Elizabeth takes her cyanide pill. 3. Claudia goes back to Russia to work with an up and coming Putin via Gabriel. 4. Paige continues to work at the state department, playing she knew nothing about her parents. Sets up a kill of Father Tim. 5. Henry is taken in by the Beeman’s at Renee’s request. 6. Renee still leaves us in doubt if she is a Russian spy or CIA. 7. Oleg goes back to Russia and his family with honors for protecting Gorbachev. 8. Stan & Dennis get promoted for uncovering the plot and preventing the sabotage of START. 9. Loose threads include: a. Martha (I believe her adopting the little girl was the end). b. Philips 1st son (I believe him meeting Philips brother was the end). c. Stavos (I believe him closing the door was the end). Closing scene? The wall coming down or the signing of the tready.

Hello The end, (maybe) As Elisabeth leaves the house she is killed by Renee who is a kgb agent and has been instructed to do so by her organization because of her treason. She later infiltrate the FBI as she has been trying and lives with Stan Philip didn't go to the safe house but instead went to get Paige and later Henry, but they are all arrested when they try to cross into Canada They will later be extradited to Russia in exchange for Oleg's family and Martha What a fantastic show this has been! Congratulations to all involved in its making Jean-Pierre Weiller Paris, France

There are so many ways for it to end - this is a possibility that I think would be a good way for it to go out: P and E live, but end up killing Stan (or Dennis) in their escape attempt. Paige makes it out too, Henry declines to go with the Jennings and they leave him behind in a heart-wrenching scene. Oleg does get released and is able to return to Russia when it is revealed he has been protecting Gorbachev. Henry is deported to Russia and Oleg takes him in after Philip somehow asks him to. Claudia I think we don't see any more of. Renee may or not be a spy. I am not calling that one. The final scene is 20-30 years in the future. P and E have been living in hiding in a new country. They have family (Mischa was able to join them along with Paige) and grandchildren and a good life. Suddenly there is a knock on the door, it is an American Agent (Perhaps young Ilya grown up, or an old Stan if he survives) and he shoots them in the head as punishment for their past sins.

Henry is American-born and therefore cannot be deported. Give Arkady credit for being the architect of Oleg's work.

While contemplating the sad state of his marriage (end of episode 7, Season 6), Philip decides to run away from it all and begin a new “American” life. He has been sifting money from the business and cooking the books, so he has a small fortune set aside. After he was almost captured in Ep. 9, he went to the FBI or CIA and made a deal before he called Elizabeth — he would turn in Elizabeth in exchange for assurances that she would not be killed during the capture. The trip to pick up Henry is a ruse — he knows the Feds will be waiting there to pick up Elizabeth. (Nothing links Paige to the illegals except her parents, so the Feds will assume she’s innocent/unaware.) During the arrest of Elizabeth, however, both Elizabeth and Paige (who tried to intervene) are killed, with Elizabeth dying while Philip holds her close, crying uncontrollably as he realizes the magnitude of his loss. Despondent, Philip begins his new life in Oklahoma, but Henry blames him for the deaths and refuses to have anything to do with him. The same with Stan, who despises Philip for his betrayal. Although Philip now has all of the material goods he could ever have desired, he realizes that, without Elizabeth, Paige, or Henry, his new life has no meaning. The last scene is him sitting in a comfortable leather chair in his well-appointed home, with a mournful country song in the background, as he takes the cyanide pill from the necklace that he surreptitiously removed from Elizabeth as she was dying.

I am adding one more revelation to my stab at the ending. Agent Wolfe is KGB. I think he is an East German working for the KGB. Wolfe is a German name. They could have named him anything, why Wolfe?

Fast Forward to November 2016 Putin achieves the ultimate SVR dream: installing a pro-Russian agent in the Oval Office- Comrade Trump

Here’s one of many details that confuse me: When the FBI’s forensic team processed Clark’s apartment, they found an unidentified fingerprint that presumably belonged to Clark. Given the number of beers Stan and Philip have shared, why wouldn’t Stan take an empty bottle to the crime lab and have Philip’s fingerprints compared with Clark’s? It seems like such an obvious way for Stan to confirm his suspicions, especially when compared to creeping around P & E’s house looking for clues while they’re out of town ...
Olivia (New York)
In an interview, several cast members described the finale as "heartbreaking". So my strong suspicion is that one of the children will die, and I'd put money on Henry, since he is the innocent. Philip and Elizabeth and Paige will race to New Hampshire to grab Henry, with Stan and the agents in hot pursuit. Henry will die accidentally in the crossfire, or by Stan's hand. Shots of Philip and Elizabeth and Stan stunned over Henry's limp body, looking at each other, anguished beyond belief. Fade to black. In the flash forwards we see P + E and Oleg getting traded back to Russia. Stan has quit the FBI. Renee is shown sending info back to Russia from her desk in the FBI. Not sure yet how they'll resolve Paige--perhaps she'll go back to Pastor Tim and the church in Latin America?
Jules (Ohio)
I think Claudia will kill Paige for revenge against Elizabeth. Paige is disgusted and disappointed in her parents even as she takes her last breath. Henry will unwittingly tip off Stan to Phillip and Elizabeth’s whereabouts and when he learns what his parents are he will turn against them. Stan will ultimately allow Phillip and Elizabeth to escape- his career would be ruined and he could be culpable as well due to his longtime friendship with spies. Hoping for a happy ending for Oleg, but not holding my breath.
Barry (Washington)
Stan tells Aderholt about the message Oleg is carrying. Aderholt passes it up the chain and the Director orders Stan to release Oleg to send the message and save the Summit. Meanwhile Stan's suspicions about the Jennings are confirmed when he can no longer contact them. On a hunch, he follows them to NH. Philip, Elizabeth and a terrified Paige grab Henry out of school and leave: just as Claudia confronts them in the parking lot. But they are armed as well; it is a standoff. Stan appears and tells everyone to drop their weapons; he angrily says he will put P+E, and Claudia, away for the rest of their lives. Henry, not comprehending, begs Stan to stop. Suddenly a shot rings out! Stan is hit but only wounded. We see Renee, armed with a pistol, emerge from behind a car as he falls, wounded. He tries to fire back; Henry, the only innocent one, rushes to his aid but is killed by Claudia. Elizabeth kills Claudia, Renee kills Elizabeth, Philip kills Renee. Stan dies in Philip's arms. Only Philip and Paige are left. In the final scenes, we see Gorbachev and Reagan shaking hands in the Oval Office to successfully conclude the Summit. Then we see Oleg return home to his family; Paige, still a true believer, starts at the State Department; and Philip shows up at Martha's door in Moscow.
Barry (Washington)
Well I got it completely wrong. Nevertheless (hopefully this isn't perceived as sour grapes) I think my ending was dramatically better -- no loose ends and a stronger sense of justice done.
Karen (Philadelphia)
The epilogue will show The Center trading Martha for Oleg. Otherwise, Oleg is in an American prison for a long time. Are Martha and Oleg the only two left who can identify P and E? I don't think we will see Claudia again. Last week was her final scene. E will die either by cyanide or Stan. Stan will try to convince Philip to confess everything. Renee is CIA and has known about the Jennings' for awhile. Henry will be clueless and Paige will stand by her father. Philip will ask for Paige's amnesty.
Vicki (Atlanta, GA)
The Soviets, led by Claudia, have been working with Henry since he was in middle school, as part of the Soviet’s Second Generation Illegals program. (This was foreshadowed by their work with Jared in Season 2, when Kate turned Jared — against his parents’ wishes.) The Soviets arranged for Henry to get admitted to the private school in NH, where they had almost unrestricted access to him to train him. His friend’s wealthy family are all illegals — the mother who spends her days combining foods may have seduced Henry, a la Kate. He was going to spend his summer “working” for them (i.e., training). The plan was for him to join the FBI, which is why he’s cozied up to Stan to spy on him, etc. In the end, Henry will have to choose between his new-found allegiance to the Soviets and his parents, both of whom now realize that the old-guard Soviets were never interested in peace.
Vicki (Atlanta, GA)
One last note that strengthens my prediction that Henry will be seduced by his friend’s mother (an illegal): He’s already demonstrated — twice! — that he has a real weakness for older women: his middle school teacher and Sandra Beeman (Stan’s ex-wife). BOOM! (mic drop)
Roger (Rochester, NY)
Philip and Elizabeth finally put their family ahead of the Centre. They reach out to Stan and volunteer to surrender if the Feds agree not to charge Paige with any espionage crimes. They go to prison, Paige goes back to college, and Stan takes care of Henry. As for Oleg, the Americans release him to Gorbachev as a good will gesture and he goes back to Moscow. As for Stavros, he will convert the closed travel office into a Greek restaurant and get a great review from the New York Times.
Robyn (Westchester County)
Aside from Stavros, I think you are on to something.
Pedro Gomez (Germany)
Since a lot of stuff will need resolution in the last episode I assume a few loose ends will be shown as flash forwards and/or open endings. The main tension I see is among Stan, Philip and Oleg and their friendships. „Solving“ it, suggests to me that can only happen with Philip’s death. But since he and Elizabeth will try to escape together (but at the end not make it), she will try to save him (and the summit) what means increasing her personal body count (including Aderholt? That would REALLY upset Stan after losing Amador). When it all goes wrong she still has the option with the cianide.. Oleg is the only one with leverage to put sense into Stan about the common purpose of all of them into saving Gorbachov and bringing peace; he could get some leniency for Philip and Elizabeth. Still, I think Philip will die. Flash forwards: Claudia will take care of Page and get her into the State Department; Martha will be informed about Philip’s death (go back to the U.S. in exchange for Oleg?). Gabriel (and Martha?) will tell Mischa the truth about his father; Henry and Mischa will be symbolic for the new generation of americans and russians.
Lakerda (WDC)
Don't we need resolution between Phillip and the son he doesn't know he has?
Roger (Rochester, NY)
Good idea, but probably too late.
Just sayin' (NYC)
Philip does know about his son. I don't think he knows that he came to America looking for him, but he knows other details of his life.
eliza (atlanta)
Renee reveals she is pregnant with Stan's child. Stan turns Phillip using Henry's tuition at St. Edwards as leverage. Something happens to Renee and Elizabeth puts herself in jeopardy running to her aid ( thus disclosing to the viewers that Renee is an American as well. This was foreshadowed in the Elizabeth Jennings episode where Elizabeth left a dying comrade to complete a mission. Elizabeth, in an effort to redeem her past actions, reveals herself in aiding Renee.) The series finale ends in a cliff hanger as we now know that Stan is surrounded on all sides by Americans. A new series follows in the present day fast forwarding our characters roles leaving us to wonder, "Who among us is an American?"
Irene Dondley (Lexington)
First, there has to be some kind of final confrontation between Stan and the Jennings. Based on the preview, Philip, Elizabeth and Paige dash up to NH to get Henry. Stan figures that is where they would go and confronts them. In the preview, Stan realizing they are Russian spies says he will kill them, but my guess is that in the end he lets them go or gets killed by his Russian girlfriend before he can capture them. I then want a flash forward that shows Martha and her daughter, Oleg reunited with his family and then the Jennings in their new life together. In Russia maybe? I'm hoping for a semi happy ever after ending!
Phil (California)
Stan learns that Rene is a spy, but shows his hand to soon and she is able to kill him right there in the home they share. She must then disappear, but leaves enough clues behind that she is assumed to be the female half of the married couple that the FBI has been pursuing since season one. The attempted coup against Gorbachev will be put down. Elizabeth kills Claudia. Elizabeth and Philip are credited (by the Gorbachev government) with exposing the coup attempt (remember, Gorbachev remains in power until 1991) and are allowed to 'retire' as the Jennings. Paige? Hmmm... she said some pretty horrible things to her mother but once she knows how her mother and father single handedly avoided a renewed arms race, maybe she 'comes to her senses' and takes that job in the state department. Henry remains clueless. And hopefully, just a cameo of Martha in Moscow with her adopted daughter, happy. Maybe she has even met a nice Russian diplomat who adores her. Then fade to black. I can live with all that.
Ken Sulowe (Seoul)
Oops, forgot to add Claudia. To make ends meet, she's forced to take a position as Moscow Central Squirrel Catcher, but she slyly tucks one in her coat every day to supplement her meager rations with the rich bounty of Russian Squirrel Stew.
Peter Delaney (Perth Western Australia)
Elizabeth will die. The moment she slashed Sofia's throat and left Ilya in the midst of it, she was going to have to die. It was such an egregious act, as well as all the other killings she had been the architect of in the first 5 episodes. No showrunner can let her get out of this without paying the price of her life for it. As in Breaking Bad, Jesse had to pay a price, and served it in his drug making purgurtory, and Walt, who died. The viewing audience has to be left with a sense at the end of a series that the scales have been balanced, especially with the main characters, otherwise it leaves us feeling uncomfortable, even if we don't know why.
Mairead Martin (Cambridge, MA)
The final episode will depend on whether it follows the pace of previous episodes, as in two, maximum three surprises, or it is going to be something entirely different which ties up all the open ends we want to see tied up. So, if it's true to form, it's going to resolve two, maximum three threads for us, but leave us with a Soprano's ending for all of the other questions. So don't expect resolution for the question of whether Renee is a spy; or whether Henry is a spy; whether the Jennings are ever reunited as a family again; what happens to Paige; whether Oleg gets back to Russia; whatever happened to Martha, etc. We're going get two, maximum three, things resolved, but the rest will leave us pondering, and, therefore, leave The Americans alive in our imaginations forever.
Pastor Tim's Wig (Arizona)
In a shocking twist, Paige is driving the getaway car - a rusty beater with a loose rear tire - but is really leading her parents into a trap she has carefully crafted with the help of the FBI. Fed up with her mother's promiscuity and murderous rampages, Paige can take it no more. Finally, she comes clean and confesses everything to the authorities, who, in turn, promise her immunity. She later admits that Pastor Tim encouraged her to come clean to clear her conscience.
JM glass (NJ)
If the Americans is about family, then it is all about love and sacrifice in relationships. With their marriage back on track the Jennings complete the loop: not a couple in episode one to falling in love, having the job interfere, and then reunited. I fear a Bonnie & Clyde ending to save the children (perhaps one saving the other to allow saving the kids), but taking Stan out with them. Phillip says he would do anything for Elizabeth, so he might try to protect her, but it is she who can’t be an “american” and survive in a new non-Russian life. Is a happy ending really possible? Fast forward to Paige’s confirmation hearing for a position at the State Department or perhaps her appointment to a key role in a Presidential campaign or administration.
Makidadi (Guelph, Ontario )
I am rooting for Elizabeth, Phillip, Paige and Henry to get away, but I expect someone to die or get caught. I would be happy if Phillip ended up living with Martha, who better show up one way or another. I bet Stan's girlfriend turns out to be agent for some organization. CIA? KGB? RCMP?
MattG (Lawrence, KS)
The Jennings family casually gather at a diner and play 'Don't Stop Believing' on the jukebox as the scene fades to black.
Pastor Tim's Wig (Arizona)
And afterwards, Paige and Pastor Tim grab one of the ponies from the last episode and ride away into the sunset. I think we all kind of wondered about those two anyway. This might be a way to tie up loose ends.
June (Richards)
They gather at the Roy Rogers in Franconia!
Just sayin' (NYC)
In the climactic confrontation with Stan at Henry's school, Phillip will have the opportunity to kill Stan and escape, but instead will sacrifice himself, giving Paige and Elizabeth the opportunity to escape to Canada. Stan will want to shoot Philip, because he feels so betrayed -- he'll be on the verge of doing it when Henry shows up, and won't go through with it because of his bond with Henry. So he'll arrest Philip instead. Philip will then take the cyanide pill (not sure how he got it...) to protect Elizabeth. Henry will be left orphaned, essentially, and will live with Stan.
Martin Snapp (Oakland California)
I think it's going to end the same way "the spy who came in from the cold" ended, unfortunately. They're both going to die, one of them self-sacrificially.
Bob (Fargo,Nd)
Excellant show. Sorry to see it end. Final scene will be daughter Paige entering her new job at State Dept. Both Phillip and Elizabeth have been killed in murder suicide. Stan survives an attack by his live in girlfriend, who turns out to a Russian plant to watch over the Jennings. The son remains clueless. Elizabeth will kill Claudia.
ed garfinkel (bellmore)
Elizabeth wakes up in bed with Stan next to her- She realizes she is married to Stan and everything was just a dream
Chris (CT)
Remember when Phillip was trying on a new suit? Did you notice all his anguish over expenses and the business, which is suddently going broke? And also that he is telling his son he'll have to leave the school? I think he is hatching an escape plan and has been stashing away cash. I also think Stan will confide in Rene about suspecting the Jennings, and she, being an undercover Russian agent, will have to get rid of him. So the Jennings will get away, while Stan gets sacrificed, and my guess is that Paige stays behind and continues the work... Don't ask me about Martha or Stavos though.
impatient (Boston)
This is such a great show with excellent acting throughout, in every role. I will miss it, and am happy to see it end leaving us wanting more. I think the only way it can end is for the parents to sacrifice themselves for their children. It is only thing that makes sense. They have been such terrible parents and now must make up for it. What else does Elizabeth have left to believe in? And Philip has lost any hope of his American dream because of his loyalty and love for Elizabeth (not the cause). His line dancing days are over forever.
Ellejenn (New York, NY)
I think maybe.... Philip, Elizabeth and Paige make it to the cabin safe house place. Claudia is there laying in wait & was followed by the FBI. Elizabeth kills Claudia. The FBI raids: Paige is killed , Elizabeth grief stricken takes her kill pill. Philip is captured and exchanged to the Soviets for Martha (her child goes back to the orphanage), and she has to face Stan. Henry is taken from his school and sent back to the Soviet Union alone, as he no longer wishes to be with Philip. Maybe. It's such a great show I am very anxious to see the final episode !
Evelyn (Boston)
I also think Henry will play a key factor in the end. Despite Elizabeth and Paige's fight, Phillip, Elizabeth and Paige are all together in the car after Philip is "blown." Their decision to go to New Hampshire will put their escape at risk. Stan did not drive Henry all the way back to school, but he can certainly find him. I'm just not sure Stan will have enough time to get to NH in time, since he still has to "see" the sketches as proof of who Elizabeth and Philip really are. If there is a confrontation between the Jennings and Stan, Stan will have his gun drawn on them, but will then see Henry and he will have second thoughts because Stan really does love Henry. Will he let them or some of them go? The other possibility is that Phillip gives himself up for the others to escape. Which is how we get the one showdown conversation everybody wants: Which is Stan asking Philip if there friendship was genuine, if Philip killed his partner, and possibly a laundry list of other questions. As much as I am rooting for Philip and Elizabeth to end up together (either both dead, both captured, or both on the run) I think they will be separated, which will be the one tragedy of the marriage/family. The "J's" are always emphasizing this is a show about marriage and family, and 1) I think we will get a tragic end, and 2) It will have to do with some base level destruction of that marriage.
denise (Mass)
There's something about Henry. He was always snooping at Stan's. Or glued to his computer, but we never saw the screens. He's curious, and expert at stealth. Stan's a basket case. Focused now but Henry could outwit him in an FBI ambush of his parents. Is Renee the red herring to keep our eyes off Henry? Remember Paige's baptism scene when she became a religiopath? She never had a chance. Sacrificed, Paige dies for sure. As the saint of collateral damage Oleg could die, or maybe get exchanged in a post finale visual. TA represents marriage always: Either P or E dies, or both miraculously live, but separated from each other. Thanks to the two J's and FX for this suspenseful, rewarding long-form television experience. I can't wait to see what's next!
Just sayin' (NYC)
I've been rewatching old episodes, and we actually do see Henry's screens a fair number of times. Paige and Matthew also join him at the computer often.
Paul (Chicago)
The family Jennings will be running up the mountain in Switzerland singing “the hills are alive with sound sound of music” I’ve been thinking this since the pilot episode in season 1
Philip (Giampietro)
This is a fabulous show and easily one of the best television series ever. Its not so much about what happens but why things happen and the process of getting to a destination. In the end, Page travels with Philip and Elizabeth to pick up Henry from school in New Hampshire. Tragically, Stan is there waiting for Philip to bring him to justice. Philip sees Henry but Stan is there. Philip is shot by Stan trying to evade him and killed. Stan adopts Henry, who becomes a US patriot and will later work for the FBI. He views Stan as his real father and never forgives his parents for their actions. Elizabeth phones Renee, who turns out to be working with the pro Gorbachov KGB faction. She and Page escape to Canada and are flown separately to Russia. They never see each other. She lives with Martha and her adoptive daughter until she is able to find work. Years later Elizabeth encounters Claudia, who is working for Putin. Claudia still bitter for her betrayal brings Elizabeth to justice and slits her throat.

What has made The Americans compelling television is that it goes beyond the spy thriller. At the core, the show explores identity, trust, relationships, and love. It is set agains the backdrop of the Cold War - and the present. The Americans has gripped us because it is a commentary on not only U.S.-Russian relations today - but today's America. We all know what happens in the Reagan/Gorbachev era. The writers will shock us back from history to the present by ensuring that the Russians win. How? As Stan trails Philip and Elizabeth, Renee emerges as a "sleeper" agent - and assassinates Stan. The writers have something beyond that in store for us. In the end, however, we'll see the FPI lose and the Russians win.
Maria (Spain)
Somehow, just as in the first episode of the series, Stan's suspicions eventually quiet down and nothing happens to them so Phillip and Elizabeth think they've gotten lucky. Eventually they begin to witness the fall of the Soviet Union on tv. In a way, that's one of the worst possible endings I could envision for them - that everything they did and sacrificed (and all those people they killed) were for nothing. The next worst thing would be if one of them dies, or if one of their kids dies.
Doriebb (New Haven, CT)
The whole family will go North. The next series about the Jennings family will be called The Canadians. Highlights include Philip and Elizabeth running a Sugar Maple plantation. Aside from singing “The International” every Christmas, they’ve gone totally mainstream. Paige teaches Pilates at a spa in Labrador. She is set to run as a Conservative MP from the Maritimes. Henry, having failed to break into pro-hockey, has taken up Curling. He kills a competitor for the directorship of The National Curling League with the cyanide tablet he finds in Elizabeth’s make-up etui. Stan Beemer has become a multi-tattooed Trump supporter. He visits Elizabeth and Philip whenever he’s in Canada for cheap prescription drugs.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Paige will escape. To Slovenia, and change her name to Melania.
Melinda Bourg (San Diego, CA)
Wouldn't it be great if Elizabeth is a double agent for the CIA. They swoop in and save her, Philip and the kids at the last minute as Stan closes in on them. She's been working for Gorbachev and his guys for years, setting the groundwork.
Andrea (Los Angeles, CA)
I expect that Philip protecting Elizabeth will be shot and die while Paige and her mom escape. Poor Henry will be pulled in for questioning and the FBI will realize he was duped by his own family and thereafter feel the real cold war as he won't want to go to Russia and will feel abandoned by his cold-hearted mom. Paige will continue her training in the motherland under the watchful eye of Elizabeth --- her handler and mother.
David Robinson (Oxford, Mississippi)
First, a comment about last week: the revelation to Elizabeth of internal resistance to Gorbachev reminded me of S1, Ep4 "In Control" when Residentura operatives asked openly if the shooting of President Reagan had been a KGB operation. The machinations of the Soviet "deep state" also hit a contemporary nerve in light of recently reported actions of some DOJ and FBI officials. As for how it may end, if I'm writing the plot: Following a confrontation with the FBI, Paige dies in Elizabeth's arms, and we learn if Elizabeth (who has committed oh so many cold-blooded murders) is, in fact, a "human being." Elizabeth either dies (my preference) or goes to prison. Philip escapes and reunites with Martha in a relationship that is more of a partnership and obligation (as well as a prison) for Philip. Henry is taken in by Stan as an unofficially adopted son. The FBI realizes the value of having Oleg as a (more or less) trust back-channel to honest Soviet officials and Oleg is released to return home (somewhat in triumph) after the Summit results in the START treaty. Finally, the foundation for the START treaty was the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) which was to eliminate an entire class of weapons. Unfortunately, 30 years later the US is planning to begin again building intermediate-range weapons because they are considered necessary to meet new threats from Iran, North Korea, as well as from Putin's Russia. Claudia's associates win after all?

The Soviet Union’s hockey teams were world champions in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. With his parents' and sister’s support, Henry will adapt to life in the Motherland.
Makidadi (Guelph, Ontario )
The quality of the hockey we have seen Henry play is pretty low. He isn't making it in Russian hockey.
Mamarishka (Columbus)
The FBI closes in as Philip, Elizabeth and Paige arrive at Henry's school. Stan confronts the Jennings and, as Elizabeth reaches for her cyanide pill, shoots her. Son Henry sees it all and runs to Philip, whose glance toward Stan expresses grief and apology. Stan's glance toward Henry shows much the same, but he keeps his gun trained on Philip to prevent his escape. In the hubbub, Paige escapes to Canada. But she secretly returns to the U.S. later to become a follower of David Koresh and dies in Waco.
Donna M (Hudson Valley)
How will it end? The writing has been so good for 6 seasons and the characters so well drawn and complex that I really don't know. Here's what I hope: I hope that the writers don't wimp out and give the audience a "they all lived happily ever after" ending. Too many innocent dead bodies in the cause of lies and deceit have been piling up for there to be no moral consequences. I hope that Oleg survives and makes it back to Gorbachev's USSR. There's time enough for him to be disillusioned in Putin's Russia, but I'd like to see him try and make a new Russia. He has been the least compromised character and has done the right thing again and again. He helped thwart the spread of biological weapons. He sacrificed his personal happiness and that of his family to try and protect Gorbachev from this KGM/military plot. Please, let him survive and make it back home. I can see scenarios where Phillip dies sacrificing himself for his family; Elizabeth takes her cyanide pill, Paige causes her parents to be in mortal danger. Henry, a true innocent, can either survive or be the sacrificial lamb and die for the sins of his parents. Other than that, I am sure that some characters will get their comeuppance, some will get away with their crimes. We'll see Wednesday night.
Jessica (New York, NY)
I think P & E will get out alive and together. (After leading a life that has estranged them from almost everybody, they only have each other.) They will leave America behind, which was never home, but not return to the Soviet Union either, because it no longer is. (Maybe they end up in Canada?) On their way out, they drive to NH to get Henry, but Stan has gotten there first. Stan is alone. (He's following his suspicions, but still not 100% sure that he's right, so didn't tell anybody else at the FBI where he was going.) P & E drive up to the school, see Stan from afar, their eyes meet in understanding (for Stan, finally), and P & E continue on without saying goodbye or even talking to Henry. The series ends with a reveal to viewers that Renee is a Russian spy--but Stan doesn't know. (So the illegals program continues.) I can't figure out Paige. Maybe she dies? I think she's been revealed as too weak, naive, idealistic to continue the work. Maybe the KGB kills her so she can't/won't rat out anybody else in the program. I do hope we see Gabriel and Martha one last time--though my guess is that they'll just continue on with their lives. And Olug is jailed in the US, because the show can't end without the US catching on to somebody. (But the one person they "catch" is somebody who was actually trying to do the right thing.)
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
They will flee back to Russia, except for Page. She's a true believer, and an idiot. She'll go far, working in the State Department, as a Russian spy. Just saying.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Paige will move to NYC, and work for Trump. Seriously.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Renee is there to spy on Stan, and his Neighbors. But NOT for Russia, for the FBI. Just saying.
Person (NYC)
Paige will wind up in Russia, babysitting Martha's child.
Nola Dana (New Orleans)
Philip and Elizabeth head to New Hampshire to collect Henry, with Stan (finally) hot on their trail. In exchange for leaving behind a bewildered Henry, Stan agrees to let them flee. Paige realizes that she isn't cut out for the spy game and stays with Henry, Stan, and Renee. Philip and Elizabeth go off to Canada or Russia or wherever, with no children, no jobs, no future. Cut to a year or so later. Paige has that job at the State Department. During family dinners with Stan and Renee, who now both work for the FBI, she blabs on and on about all the amazing work she's doing. Last scene is of Renee sending Paige's unintentional intel back to Mother Russia.
APE (NYC)
My hope is that they pay for crimes of the murder of citizens of the US A - innocent or otherwise From the beginning they killed with impunity. shocked and horrified Americans had any sympathy for the duplicitous nature and evil intent of these fictional and absurd characters but it is the nature of our current American sickness for entertainment above all no matter what with no regard to moral virtue or intent
Jerome (Pasadena)
I find myself rooting for Phillip and Elizabeth and then I have to remind myself of the fact that these are Russian spies on American soil killing Americans. Yes, they should be caught and have to pay for their crimes. The skillful directing and filmmaking make the main characters very sympathetic and I find myself wanting them to achieve their goals. However, this is a huge discomfort for me as an "American" I want them to be caught for the spies they are.
KH (NYC)
Claudia gives Paige an assignment without telling her parents. Phillip escapes meeting with Father Andrei, but only just, is seen, and has to kill on his way out,, adding to his angst. Elizabeth finds out about Paige's mission, and kills Claudia, as she has wanted to do since season 1. Claudia doesn't go quietly. Stan and Aderholt arrest Oleg to pressure him into definitively identifying the Jennings. Tatiana orders Renee to kill Oleg while he is in custody. Paige freelances and gets caught, but seems to be talking her way out of it. Gabriel shows up to exfiltrate Paige and Henry, and works on Henry by telling him he has a long-lost half-brother. Oleg's mother goes to the black marketeer that Oleg tried to nail to help keep her husband out of prison. As the FBI closes in on Phillip and Elizabeth, Phillip has a clear shot at Stan but doesn't take it. Elizabeth takes the cyanide as Aderholt closes in on her, him knowing she's the one who beat him and Gaad. Phillip and Stan have an incredibly sad and intense interrogation scene. Martha's adopted daughter turns out to be Mischa's, although she doesn't know it. Paige convinces Pastor Tim to come get her. Kimmy and Jackson hook up, not knowing what they have in common. Arkady marries Martha. A flashback of Phillip's childhood is the last scene of the final montage.
Lee Rosenthall (Philadelphia)
Oleg was already arrested and Tatiana is dead.
PrairieFlax (Grand Island, NE)
How could Martha's daughter be Mischa's? There's the question of both their ages, and the fact that Mischa was first in Afghanistan and then in a mental ward prison.
jill0 (chicago)
Elizabeth will die and reunite with Gregory, the one who actually got her.
Jennifer (NYC/NJ)
I am beside myself. I don’t think Elizabeth survives. If Claudia even suspects that she is actively trying to keep Nesterenko alive, E is a goner. I’m also worried about Oleg. Hell, I’m worried about everybody. I can’t take it!
Newt (Jacksonville)
Stan will tail Philip & Elizabeth and observe a meeting with Oleg in the park. Stan will confront the Jennings, and Oleg reluctantly pulls a gun on his friend. Stan, not so reluctantly, shoots Oleg. As he trains the gun on the Jennings, he is neutralized by Soviet athletic emissaries Nikolai Volkoff, Ivan Koloff and his nephew, Nikita. They strangle Stan with his super-long '80s necktie as he tries to cackle out his unrequited love for the mail robot. Alas, the mail robot will never know the depth of Stan's feelings ... As they clean up the crime scene, another Soviet Directorate S agent, this one from the entertainment world, Yakov Smirnoff, tells a witty joke about how in America, killing people works up your appetite, but in Russia, working up an appetite kills you. All six comrades laugh as the screen fades to black.
holmesm1 (PA)
The family all go to Canada. Stan misses out on catching them.
Hopeful (Bethesda, MD)
They become "The Canadians." Philip runs a profitable business, Elizabeth enjoys government healthcare, and Paige and Henry receive college educations at a fraction of the price. Happy endings for all!
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
I think Renee will be revealed to be a spy--although not necessarily for the Russians--either to kill Stan to protect the Jennings or to show espionage will continue. I think there will be an intense scene with Henry, who I do not see fleeing to Russia, unlike Paige. I think they will try to escape to Russia via Canada. The KGB will target Oleg and his family. Philip will not wind up with Martha--it has always been obvious Elizabeth is his true love. If necessary, he will sacrifice his life to help her escape. Elizabeth will take poison to avoid capture if necessary--but not Philip. Claudia will wind up in Russia helping the hardliners. Most Times posters will ignore how many innocent Americans have been murdered and root for the Jennings to escape.
Makidadi (Guelph, Ontario )
Keep in mind that the USA was involved in similar activities around the world, overthrowing democracies, installing dictators, spreading false propaganda.
Tom (Land of the Free)
P and E will re-emerge in London, P will have picked up a smashing English accent ;), E not so much; they own a real estate agency selling houses to wealthy Russians (or do they?) Paige will join Pastor Tim in Brazil, and become a nun. Henry will be adopted by Gabriel and Martha, get his PhD from Moscow State, and head the research program on Novichok. Stan will lose trust in everyone, especially Renee, and will move into P and E's house to see how they pulled it off. Claudia will open up pop-up restaurants (gotta keep moving) serving Russian food. Oleg is freed in exchange for Edward Snowden.
PrairieFlax (Grand Island, NE)
Wow, that's a long time for Oleg to be in jail.
JK (Atlanta)
All I know is we need a sequel call 'The Russians' that explores what happens in the former Soviet Union after Gorbachev. Great TV.
llnyc (NYC)
Now without a country, Elizabeth and Philip move to Texas where Philip spends his golden years line dancing in his cowboy boots, and Elizabeth pays the ultimate price for all she's done because: Texas. After the embarrassing news about his neighbors comes to light, Stan is reassigned to the mailroom where he spends lots of quality time with the Mail Robot. Stavos gets in on the ground level of on-line travel, and makes a fortune at Expedia. Oleg gets sprung in a spy exchange and winds up putting the O-L in oligarch. Martha meets Arcady in line for bread and sparks fly. Paige returns to the church, this time as a nun, to live out her days in penance. And Henry is elected to the Senate, where he green lights all of Trump's policies. Because he's a spy, of course. And a triumphant one, because, in the words of Oleg, "You think it doesn't matter who our leader is?"
Allie (Philadelphia )
Knowing that he'll be canned for his ineptitude in not realizing that the illegals were his next door neighbors all these years, Stan grabs one of the cyanide pills for himself. I really hope that, regardless of the ending, there will be even a brief flash forward to see how the survivors fare in a post-Soviet world.
Nick (NYC)
Phil and Elizabeth will be finally identified as Illegals from sketches in Chicago and from their various crime scenes, surveillance details, witnesses, etc. With warrants and the full backing of the FBI, Stan & Co. will search the travel agency and the house (perhaps a second look at that circuit breaker) and find evidence of fishy activity, but by this time P&E will be in the wind. Phil, Elizabeth and Paige will drive north to pick up Henry on their way to escaping the country, but Stan will suspect this since he knows where Henry is, and will set a trap for them there (Remember - Stan drove Henry back to school after Thanksgiving). The so-so Soviet trio will have to choose whether to leave Henry behind - the boy is truly innocent, and embodies so much of American culture - or potentially sacrifice their escape for the sake of keeping the family together. Perhaps Elizabeth would be willing to leave him behind, but Philip can't bear it. Or perhaps Phil steels himself with the assurance that Henry will be alright in America after all - especially with Stan to look out for him - but Elizabeth's maternal instincts finally kick in in favor of picking him up. This conflict will lead to one of three outcomes: 1. The family escapes to Canada or wherever, and the FBI is flummoxed one final time. 2. Phil & Elizabeth are caught together - they opt not to go out guns blazing in front of their kids. 3. One of the parents is caught or surrenders, and the other gets away with the kids.
Susan N (Bham, AL)
Stan didn't drive Henry all the way back to school. He just drove him to the bus station.
Carmazon (washington dc)
I've tivoed, but not yet watched, the latest episode. My fantasy is the final episode takes place in the present and we see an obviously older Elizabeth, still on assignment, playing a Kellyanne Conway type role in the WH while Philip. fully retired from assignments, works with a semi-professional theater group in Arlington.
Vicki (Atlanta, GA)
Possibly, but the older Elizabeth will look EXACTLY THE SAME — just as she has throughout the seven-year span of the series (plus flashbacks).
Alan Chaprack (NYC)
The Berlin wall will fall and a while later, Elizabeth, Paige and Henry will be sitting down in a diner while Phillip selects "Don't Stop Believin'" on the juke box. You can guess the rest.
robin (new jersey)
After last night's episode, and remembering it's 1987, not 2018- they may get away, or at least Elizabeth, Philip and Paige. By the time Stan sees the photo (remember not digital or cell phone cameras yet) and recognizes Philip, the Jennings will be on their way to New Hampshire with different plates on their car. At best Stan will be able to call New Hampshire FBI and Henry's school to save Henry or to intercept the Jennings. Philip, Elizabeth and Paige still are not sure if Russia is safe for them- the Directorate is after them and from New Hampshire (with or without Henry) they'll go to Canada using different passports. Stan may have trouble after it's known that he lived next door to spies for years. Renee is either just Renee OR is actually an FBI deep cover, CIA or Department of Defense agent looking into Stan- remember Stan saved Oleg in Russia, and there may have been knowledge of Stan's affair with Nina. Oleg may end up in prison, but his family will be safe as his loyalty to Gorbachev will be known.
PrairieFlax (Grand Island, NE)
Arkady also runs the Directorate at Deputy Chief, and won't let the Directorate harm them.
Red Sox (Schaumburg, IL)
It looks as if Joe W. is going to use death at the final wrap up. Would not be surprised, but saddened if he did. The Jennings three are on their way to New Hampshire and Stan knows exactly where they are headed. Remembering the 1st episode where Philip executed driving the car in reverse to rescue Elizabeth and writers use of re-visiting opening sequences to add the twist of a different resolution. In this case either a deadly crash or a deadly ambush by the FBI. I am not promoting this ending but there's not much time left. However, Weisberg et al are masters of dancing to the edge of the abyss without falling in.
alise1968 (Boston)
Did anyone else fear for a moment that it was Paige in disguise who Elizabeth shot on the street? I can't help but feel that she's in the most danger especially after the conversation Elizabeth had with Claudia.
Susan N (Bham, AL)
No, she's had no weapons or assassination training yet.
Lee Rosenthall (Philadelphia)
I thought it was Renee!
Stars baba (Missouri)
The Jennings will be picked up, debriefed, and relocated somewhere in the US. As the series draws to a close, we see Stan relax and settle with a beer, back home with Renee, who we find out in the last seconds is — a Russian agent (who just landed a job in the FBI).
Bookworm8571 (North Dakota)
Before tonight's episode, I would have guessed that Elizabeth and Oleg would die saving the Russian diplomat and foiling the Gorbachev plot and the others would somehow escape undetected. Now I think they may all get out alive. The real "illegals" that the show was based on were all traded back to Russia for American spies, including some of the American raised kids who had no idea that their parents were actually Russian spies. The preview shows Philip, Elizabeth and Paige in a car headed to New Hampshire, probably to get the unsuspecting Henry. Does he refuse to go and call Stan to turn them in or does he get dragged onto a plane to Russia? It would echo the fate of the real Henrys who ended up in Russia and were unable to return to the country of their birth.
Eric (NY, Ny)
In real life, the Henrys' birth country was not America, it was Canada. And they have fought to gone back there.
Bookworm8571 (North Dakota)
Regardless. Once they found out the parents were spies, no one wanted the spy offspring in North America and they were barred from returning. Henry and Paige won’t be trusted. They will have to go with their parents if the Jennings end up back in Russia and there’s some sort of deal.
Ken Sulowe (Seoul)
Of course, the real illegals were apparently members of the gang that couldn't shoot straight and they didn't go around killing innocents willy-nilly.
Laura Zaner (Philadelphia)
I really really don’t want this show to end! But I do hope, despite it all, that the Jennings family gets to live happily ever after.
Democrat, NYC (NYC)
Why would you wish that the Jennings family gets to live happily ever after after all of the murders they've committed? Or those people like Martha whose lives have been ruined through deception and manipulation?
jau0384 (Somerset NJ)
My only certainty is that Elizabeth does NOT get captured alive. I believe she goes down fighting, possibly taking Stan &/or Phillip with her. Will miss this show! Even though I remain conflicted about rooting for Russian spies.
Daniel Scher (New York)
To expand on my previous comment regarding Elizabeth ‘s capture: Claudia recruits Paige to do her summit work since Elizabeth won’t (not killing anyone, mind you, but something dangerous.) Elizabeth confronts Claudia and learns what Paige has been asked to do. Elizabeth intervenes, gets Paige out of danger, but gets caught in the process. The wig gets pulled off by Stan’s partner to reveal her identity.
Milo (San Francisco)
I think Elizabeth has to die somehow. Philip may survive but he will be completely alone, in a witness protection program or back in Russia, somehow completely and permanently estranged from the kids, who I think will both survive.
Liz K (Wakefield, RI)
Wild and crazy ending: Phillip and Elizabeth have been having a flashback on their younger days these past seasons. They are now "elder" spies in "Homeland". Oleg and William have both been in "Homeland", so why not? Carrie will need all the help she can get to recover from Russian prison detention. Love reading everyone else's comments. will be sad to see this show end.
Gerald (Edmonton)
I predict that Phillip and Elizabeth will retire in the USA after saving the summit and Gorbachev against the Soviet hardliners. Paige will get a job in the State Department. Henry will become an NHL hockey player. Renee will be forced to kill Stan to protect the Jennings. Probably a car accident. Oleg will go home to his family.
Daniel Scher (New York)
Stan confronts Philip and asks if their friendship was a total sham. Philip says no. Stan asks Philip if he killed his partner. Philip is silent. A fight ensues. Philip has the opportunity to kill Stan, but instead tells him to take care of Henry before knocking him out. Elizabeth, to save Paige, either sacrifices herself or is sent to prison, where the final image we see of her is sitting in her cell and sketching with a pencil. Philip escapes to Russia. We fast forward and a number of years. The last shot we see is Martha with her daughter. Into the frame walks Philip, who is now Martha’s (true) partner.
jill0 (chicago)
Good one!
Nick (NYC)
Why is there this fan theory that Phil is actually in love with Martha? It was a sham, and the entire time he was with her he looked and felt extremely awkward.
lucia (italy)
That's only nostalgia.. willing to everything to see Martha happily ever after
Laure (Cambridge, MA)
Stan knows. I think the title of the penultimate episode is "Jennings, Elizabeth" because Stan is going to dig into her file and discover that she had no actual presence or network in the U.S. prior to her arrival with Philip. Oleg will at some point try to save Elizabeth and Philip by informing Stan that they are no longer working for the Center and that the Center has turned on them. This is the irony of it all: Stan, the crème de la crème of the FBI, will mess up once again. Philip and Elizabeth are now hunted both by the FBI and by the Center. In reality, they were always in exile and never belonged. Philip and/or Elizabeth and/or Paige will die. I have a strong feeling Paige will die, actually, like a sacrificial lamb. Also, given the parallels between 607 and previous episodes, I can't help but think that there will be some parallel with that family whose son killed them all several seasons back. Yikes... #OHenry What about Philip's son? And I'm wondering if we'll see Martha again. She doesn't really serve a purpose at this point, though. Perhaps she will be woven back in if/when FBI people remember that she was questioned and disappeared a few seasons back. #OGad All I can say is I've had TWO nightmares over the past week in which I was actually in an episode and trying to figure out how it was all going to end at the same time. I am both extremely sad the show is ending and very impatient to see the last two episodes. A masterpiece.
Doug (Pittsburgh)
Final scenes cascading in sequence, played out with Peter Gabriel's "Wallflower" in the background - a. Paige's funeral b. Elizabeth sitting alone like the Sphinx in the federal pen. c. Henry moving in with Stan d. Philip, walking down the street alone, stops to stare at Martha and her adopted daughter playing in a Moscow park. Then their eyes meet. Fade to black.
Ross (Mpls)
I suspect that the song "Tusk" will make a curtain call in the finale credits. Also that the mail robot meets an untimely end.
Nick (NYC)
The finale will actually be a flash forward to an alternate future where Gorbachev was removed, peace talks and arms negotiations turned sour, and the world is obliterated by a fierce nuclear exchange. All life on earth is compromised by nuclear winter. The last survivors hang on to what's left of their lives and culture. Naught but despair remains. But the mail robot lives on.

Philip and Elizabeth take the two cyanide pills (Philip took Harvest's before throwing the pendant away) and expire in each other's arms. Paige goes to Russia with Claudia. A devastated Henry becomes Stan's ward.

Poor Henry. R.I.P. The one true innocent of the bunch.

Renee is a Russian also that set herself to be near Stan in case her gets too smart. When Stan goes to arrest the Jennings she steps in with a gun. Phillip kills her before she can kill Stan. Stan and the Jennings have a nice little talk and Stan lets them go. Henry is at the movies.

No, Oleg would never willingly forsake his wife and baby. If he stays in the U.S., it's because he's dead. Which, I greatly fear, he may be.
Teresa (Austin)
The suspense is killing me. Here's my best theory: Claudia recruits Paige to take out the Russian negotiator, but Paige is killed in the attempted assassination by Stan/Aderholt. Philip and Elizabeth then kill Claudia and go after Stan, but Stan is ahead of them and arrests P&E. E takes the cyanide pill as P screams "nooooo!!!!". She dies and P goes to jail. Stan assumes guardianship of Henry. In the final episode, which we know is titled START, we jump to 1991 and E is sitting in jail utterly defeated and dejected like he's always been, now knowing for sure that everything they did and the loss of their daughter and his wife was for NOTHING. The final shot is Renee at the FBI smiling. Oh, how I do wish we get to see Martha again! She has acclimated to Russia and is happy with her adopted daughter.
robin (new jersey)
Claudia will kill (or have killed) Elizabeth and Philip. Pastor Tim will out Paige who will be deported. Not sure of Henry though. OR Elizabeth will die and Philip will be deported to Russa and take Henry because he is a minor. Paige will be outed by Pastor Tim and deported as well. Stan will lose his job for not recognizing KGB next door after all these years. Renee is CIA, not FBI.
cds333 (Washington, D.C.)
Paige can't be deported. She was born in the U.S.
George Palmer (Dallas)
As the circle closes around Philip and Elizabeth, the two decide to split. Elizabeth and Paige choose to go to Russia and Claudia, in the nick of time, arranges their exfiltration. Philip and Henry remain in the U.S. Philip gives himself up to his FBI neighbor, Stan, but, with Stan's connivance, arranges for Henry to be sent to live somewhere else in America, with a second cousin of Stan's in Idaho or the West Coast.

I think it will end with the FBI agent neighbor inviting Philip and Elizabeth over for a surprise. When the 2 walk in the door, several FBI agents point guns at them at which point Elizabeth swallows her cyanide pill, drops dead, and Philip lets out a cry as he walks away in handcuffs.

Henry, who has known all along what his parents (and Paige) are, will sell their story to The Washington Post so he can pay his boarding school tuition. Stan will be fired for his incompetence and be replaced by the Mail Robot. Paige (the only weak performer in a stellar series) will mercifully (for viewers) wind up swallowing her mom's cyanide pill. Elizabeth, Phillip, Rene, and Claudia will all escape to Russia where they will meet up with Martha. Elizabeth will become an oligarch by the year 2016 and help install donald trump as president of the U.S.

The Sound of Glasnost. To escape the Nazis, the Von Trapps had Mother Abbess; to evade the FBI and Claudia's anti-Gorby fifth column, the Jennings have Father Andrei. He hides them in the catacombs of the Russian Orthodox Church and gives them safe passage to the Canadian Rockies, where instead of singing 'Edelweiss' Philip leads the family in line-dancing into the sunset to Eddie Rabbitt.

love it!

The Jennings will encounter Tony Soprano at Holsten's in Bloomfield, NJ.

Given that stage setting can be used as foreshadowing I think Phillip will die. After he leaves Paige's apartment in the episode where he has sparred with Paige he walks down the white corridor toward the audience and elevator. There are a series of white light fixtures above his head along the way. The hallway flooring has a border of arrows pointing to Phillip. He reaches the elevator to his left, turns, presses the button, and steps inside. Pearly Gates? Limbo? Hell if I know. And even if there is no afterlife, Phillip will partly become a molecule of a cat's dander irritating the eye of an old woman who is petting the cat while watching her favorite TV show in, say, three hundred years, because as long as there are humans (if we don't destroy ourselves) there will be television. Have a beer for Stan, Comrades, and enjoy.
IMPROV (NY)
So....will we fans have a Breaking Bad thrill or a Boardwalk Empire / Dexter feeling of WTF? My money's on the former, but it always is. I would be most surprised if Stan is not left standing at the end. I'm unsure, though, of who he's going to play off against. I could see a 30 year flash forward to Stan, having been unable to prove his suspicions, meeting widower Philip for a beer and a chat regarding the Russians influence on the 2016 election. But, what I really think is going to go down is: Renee turns out to be nothing more than a red-herring who we suspected mainly because it's been Laurie Holden playing the role. Henry is largely absent and at school, giving up hockey for the lead in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Martha is seen no more, having gone the way of The Sopranos' Pine Barrens Russian or Mad Men's Sal Romano. Pastor Tim's hair straightens as a result of his telcall with Stan, but he gives the FBI agent little of use. Oleg and Aderholt survive, but Claudia (finally) gets hers via one of those cyanide pills. However, the Jennings' lives/careers come to an end in an "accident" orchestrated by her. Stan was unable to prove his suspicions about the Jennings, and is at their house for the post funeral gathering when Paige introduces her to her Uncle Gabriel. Stan's reaction is the closing shot of the series.
General Distance (MT)
Philip defects, gives up Elizabeth to save himself and the kids.

Lots of posts suggesting Paige is a sitting duck and she's buying the farm. But Henry is the true innocent here, and tragedy all-too-often claims the innocent as victim. But by whose hand?
TechMaven (Iowa)
Stan will turn them - both of them - and they'll be double agents. They won't tell Paige.
Seth (New York)
Elizabeth and Phillip exposing Claudia and the Center’s activities, and then the family going into the witness protection program, seems almost too clear and logical of a path. I would instead see a scenario where Elizabeth informs Paige of the sinister intentions of the Center. Paige then confronts Claudia in a potential violent struggle in a sort of coming out for Paige. Family moves back to Russia (including Henry who is convinced of the new relationship between the US and Russia). Rene does work for the Russians, as they needed someone to keep an eye on the FBI agent who lives across the street from their two star agents.
zeeba neighba (Ann Arbor)
I'm guessing Renee is finally revealed when she acts to prevent Stan from compromising what she was sent to protect - Paige, whose potential value far exceeds her parents combined. Happy ending? Elizabeth gets the martyrdom she craves and Phillip escapes to live happily ever after with Martha.
DocNYC (NY, NY)
that's a good twist!
Suzabella (Santa Ynez, CA)
This last season has been so painful for Philip and Elizabeth. Philip is already estranged from the Center. Elizabeth has begun to question the Center’s motives, which will bring them closer together. Paige will be seriously injured or die while going too far out on a limb spying. This will bring Elizabeth and Philip even closer. Stan is definitely on to the Jennings and tells Renee of his suspicions. She’s a sleeper and either she, and/or Oleg will let the Jennings know Stan is onto them. Stan may end up killing Renee once he knows she’s a spy. The Jennings will make plans to flee, but Stan confronts them. During this segment there will be some violence, perhaps even death. Ultimately Stan, who is conflicted about his relationship with the Jennings, will offer them witness protection if they flip. And they will flip. Paige, if still alive, will join them. Claudia will be arrested. Oleg goes home. Martha stays in Russia. Stan will fake their deaths before they go into witness protection, so Henry will live with him. Henry will go into the FBI. Alternatively, once Stan confronts the Jennings, Elizabeth will take the pill and die. Paige will be devastated over her mother’s death and will go into witness protection with Philip.
Jim (New york,NY)
Elizabeth and Philip will do a Thelma and Louise and commit suicide together.
Barbara (NY, NY)
they defect to US and share all the info on the Center and go into witness protection....
dzielonka (SF)
I think Gabriel recruited Henry shortly before Henry's suddenly improved academic performance and that Henry will turn his parents over to Stan, who will remain unaware that Henry is a spy with far less of a conscience. Philip's and especially Elizabeth's neglect of their son bread a sociopath. That chicken is coming home to roost.
Melissa (Boston)
Let's not forget about that cynanide capsule out there...
IMPROV (NY)
two cyanide capsules....Philip palmed Harvest's, I think
Sarah (Phoenix)
The Soviet agent swallowed the cyanide pill and died from it. No palming.

Rene is a deep cover agent, and as Stan begins to confide in her, she warns the Center, who pull Philip, Elizabeth and Page. When it's apparent Stan hasn't disclosed his suspicions to anyone at the bureau Rene kills him, allowing the agents the opportunity to continue living in the States or returning to Moscow. Elizabeth and Page leave, Philip and Henry stay behind.
Suzabella (Santa Ynez, CA)
I have often wondered if Rene is a deep cover agent.
DocNYC (NY, NY)
Elizabeth and Phillip prevent the assassination of the Soviet negotiator. Stan is about to unmask them but Oleg stops him. In the meanwhile, too good to be true Renee infiltrates the FBI. Paige pursues the plan to work at the State Department, falls in love with America, and eventually goes to work for the CIA. Arkady sends Phillip some money so Henry can stay at school. Gabriel and Claudia rekindle their romance when Claudia returns to Moscow. Along the way, a few people get bumped off (remember the Red Shirts on Star Trek?). Hey--we can dream can't we?
Lucy (Anywhere)
Mom, dad, and Paige fly to Moscow, leaving poor Henry behind - but not to worry: Stan adopts him and starts preparing him for FBI work.
fast/furious (the new world)
My guess - Henry has been a secret KGB agent for several years, recruited long ago by Gabriel. Philip and Elizabeth don't know this. I think P & E commit suicide when faced with capture by the F.B.I. Henry then takes up Stan on his offer to live part-time with the Beemans while he completes high school and makes plans to go to an Ivy League college. This assumes that Stan and Aderholt aren't killed. They are now my favorites and I'm pulling for them both - possibly an effect of you-know-who spending all his time tweeting about and smearing the patriotic, hardworking F.B.I......
DocNYC (NY, NY)
Another interesting twist---Henry as the REAL second generation spy....

Renee is the key. If she isn't Mossad she's a Russian safety back-up and will tip off Phillip & Elisabeth for a quick extraction to the homeland.

That this show can end a hundred different ways, and EACH ending seem actually POSSIBLE, is further evidence that this show is a masterpiece. I'm so torn......I cannot wait to see the last episode, yet I am DREADING it, because I do not want this show to end. While it does need to come to its end, soon.......the anticipation and savoring of each episode over the last several years has been absolutely delicious. SAVE MARTHA! (she needs her own show)

Check out 'Deutschland 83' too. ('Deutschland 86' was supposed to premiere on Sundance sometime this year, but I've seen no release date yet.) That show is the reason I've always suspected Renee to be Stasi!
Bob (North Carolina)
Now that Stan is officially suspicious (convinced?), one has to wonder what took him so long? What kind of travel agents constantly come and go in the middle of the night? What kind of parents travel so often but never take their kids along, instead leaving them by themselves or with the neighbors? Stan will be horrified that he was so oblivious, especially when he reflects on the costs over the years. And what about Renee? She seems so insightful and engaged, yet has never expressed the least curiosity about the Jennings’ behavior – not even when Elizabeth abandoned her family and friends at Thanksgiving. Nah. Renee is the anti-Martha. Sadly for Stan, Renee will ensure that Elizabeth and Phil survive and return safely to the USSR. Ironically, they will be just in time to see the Party fall and the new Russia emerge in all its excess. Paige will carry on after Elizabeth and Phil. The illegals are still among us.
Hazel (New Jersey)
Yeah and they are living in the White House.
Famdoc (New York)
Confronted by the reality of Stan identifying Elizabeth and Philip, Philip will cooperate with the FBI in exchange for being placed in the witness protection program, where he will invent expedia.com, thus redeeming his travel agent career. Elizabeth and Paige will escape to the USSR, where they will return to the civilian sector and Paige will join a religious sect. Henry will become an NHL executive.

Before the start of season 6, even after the first episodes, I would have answered: Phlip and Elizabeth will suffer from a vastly different fate as their involvement in the business was ever more diverging. Since things turned around in episodes 7 and 8 and the unfathomable fact of only two more are about to air, I think it's unlikely that there’s enough narrative allowance for two seperate main threads to be spun and eventually to unfold. So what are the the remaining open threads? First and foremost it's Elizabeth and Philip vs Stan. As the latter’s impaired vision has finally cleared up, he will most likely catch up quickly and learn that his suspicion is the bitter truth. I believe it might end with him arresting both. Perhaps either one gets killed in the process or commits suicide before the handcuffs are tightened around their wrist. Paige, whose involvement Stan wouldn’t immediately recognize, might get away and extradicted to Russia with the help of Claudia and the Rezidentura. Once in the USSR she’d perhaps realize the scope of her indoctrination and how she got blinded – or go on to become an agent of post-communist Russia. Henry will remain in America and be put into the Beemans’ custody. This is a symbolic embodiment of Stan’s repeated involuntary influx of the "alien within oneself" (compare Nina, Oleg, Gennadi & Sofia). I don't think Renee turns out to be the super spy many suspect (there isn't much time for an all-out plot twist).
Gregory (Earth)
The big question mark at this point is Oleg. Will he meet up with Philip and Elizabeth? If things were to become dire, will it be him who’s going to get caught in the crossfire? I doubt he will make it back home alive. As he’s not in the U.S. with a diplomatic passport, there’s only so much the Rezidentura (or Arkady) could do to protect him from getting arrested by the Americans. I suspect we'll get to see one last meeting of Oleg and and his vengeful ex-lover Tatiana. She might be the one to decide his eventual fate if his true reason for travelling to Washington D.C. were to be revealed. Martha – she might find happiness with an adopted child. Her parents will be allowed to visit her after the Iron Curtain falls. Gabriel – ? Stavos – might be an important witness if one of the Jennings’ gets caught by the FBI. Father Andrei & Pastor Tim – two very different men of the cloth. The former seduced into a treacherous ideology due to the Soviet secular stance, the latter the voice of morality that got muted by supposed benevolence. Ultimately, I believe the show will end without a direct resolve and instead offer an immersive, anti-climactic and eventually ambiguous last insight into the characters’ perspectives, the actual implosion of the cold war and its echo in the geopolitical aftermath. We today can interpret all of this very differently than the fictional people on the show could. This contrast is what we, the viewers, will take with us after this great show ends.

Sins of the parents will be visited upon the children. Paige, Henry...run for it!

Stan needs a win, and nabbing the Jennings would be the mother of all wins. But it would also be tragic, as they have been his friends and confidantes for these many years. I do hope they finally get caught, though. These last few episodes have had me on tenterhooks!
