I love this part of the world! I often drive up the 101 from Humboldt county to southern Oregon. I've been on the Rogue twice and traveled to Crater Lake after leaving Bend. I strongly recommend a drive along the Oregon coast, with a stop at Gold Beach, Cape Perpetua, and funky Florence as an extension trip after the Rogue.

Word to the wise, when you're in Oregon and there are no other cars around and it's snowing, stay on the main roads. People die on those backroads, because it's very easy to get lost and/or snowed in miles from anywhere. We don't kid about our weather here (except for how much it rains in the Valley, of course).

We're full-time RVers currently parked near Mt. Shasta. We're headed north, next stop: Grant's Pass. Then up to Sutherlin and McMinnville. Wineries are high on our list to visit. Perfect timing for this article! Thanks.

I am too old to send suggestions on Twitter or Instagram, so I comment here. Flowers are good, but look for a native flower image wherever you go. That will make a more interesting record of the places you go.

The "flowering bush" is a camellia.

In the future, if you wish to determine the status of roads to Crater Lake, try the National Park Service website, which provides links to road status. https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/hours.htm Among other things, the page states: "The North Entrance and West Rim Drive can open as early as mid-May or as late as the end of June." Not early April. The Rim Drive is intimidating enough on dry pavement!

Please, NYTimes writers, stop encouraging people to visit all of nice places in Oregon! We have way too many tourists as is :-(

We lived here for 12 years, in Ashland, about a 30 minute drive from most of the places on this list. For me, there is nothing as wonderful as running the mossy trails, and then cancelling all the hard work with a picnic of Rogue Creamery cheese and Rogue Ale.

Been some years since we stopped in Grants Pass on a SanDiego to Seattle road trip and floated down the river on a one day trip. In addition to the raft, I used an inflatable kayak, they supplied. Great trip. Also, the Oregon Coast, (on way back), features giant sand dunes, charming and historic Astoria at mouth of Columbia, (river museum) and a Lewis and Clark site. We did not discover the Blue Cheese, But....
