Nixon Has the Buzz, but Cuomo Hits Convention With the Advantage

I think most people understand that putting an actor in the executive spot has not paid off. Gov. Cuomo is not as liberal, or progressive as we might desire, but he does know how to get things done. In the end, that is more important to have someone who is able to get things done and agrees with most progressive positions, than someone who talks the talk, but has no experience. She should run for the Assembly.

There’s a reason there’s no Republican front runner or one at all for NY Governor. They have everything they need in Andrew - no hyperbole. Major republicans are endorsing Cuomo. He is the bulwark against NY state democratic legislation. They’re betting on it. In a politically transparent NY, Cuomo would simple be on the Republican ticket and Nixon the Democratic. This has absolutely nothing to do with a debate on the left. Or, pray do tell - would legislation be any different if Cuomo were a registered Republican? Nope. They’ve already got their guy in camouflage.
JB in NYC (NY)
Nixon is correct saying Cuomo isn't a real Democrat. Same goes for DINO Hillary's endorsement.
Chris (Berlin)
But, but .... glass ceiling! Since her epic election loss Hillary Clinton has blamed everything from BerniBros and Jill Stein to capitalism for her humiliating defeat to a moronic political novice, and especially women for not voting for her (a la Madeline Albright "there's a special place in hell for women who don't support other women"). She's also said women voted for Trump because of their husbands or male bosses telling them not to vote for "the girl". Now she's endorsing Andrew Cuomo for NY Governor over Cynthia Nixon (public opinion vs. private opinion, I assume). My only issue with Cynthia Nixon is that she actually endorsed Hillary in 2016, but I bet she's learned her lesson now! I'm betting Hillary is endorsing Cuomo because after former AG Eric Schneiderman's resignation he's her last hope. Alternatively, maybe Cynthia Nixon simply refused to give Hillary a few million dollars for her endorsement or Andrew Cuomo was the highest bidder, or If Hillary can't break the glass ceiling she apparently doesn't want other women to do so. Pro-gay, pro-women Hillary of 2016 lost bigly. Guess she's decided to go back to pre-'08 Hillary who was anti-gay and anti-women, but got to live in the White House. In any case, I have never come across a single NY resident who is in favor of King Andrew and Ken Langone, owner of Home Depot and the boss of Cuomo's MTA Head Joe Lhota, Steven Mnuchin, Rudy Giuliani and Carl Icahn - all Republicans - have endorsed Cuomo. He's got to go.
Che Beauchard (Lower East Side)
The best thing that Andrew Cuomo can do for the State of New York is to leave and to take his self-centered attitudes with him. No one who is outraged at Mr. Trump's attempts to shut down the investigations of Mr. Trump should forget that Mr. Cuomo shut down the Moreland ethics commission in New York State when it became clear that it's continuation would be an embarrassment to him. Please, Mr. Cuomo, rid us of you. No need to wait.
fast/furious (the new world)
Hillary will deliver the Keynote address at the New York Democratic Convention? Why? Her status is now as a relatively insignificant Secretary of State who lost a quest for president twice - first a nomination to Barack Obama, then a sure-thing presidential race to Donald Trump. If the selection of longtime Clinton insider Tom Perez as DNC Chair didn't convince anyone, HRC taking such a prominent place at the NY Democratic Convention is proof the Clintons, now electorally irrelevant, will continue to maintain their stranglehold on the national Democratic Party. This despite Hillary's losses, the Clinton's embarrassing greed and perfidy and the now retro discrediting of the policies of Bill who used despicable racist theories to drag the Democratic party to the Republican-lite right. To say nothing of Bill's immature, and possibly illegal, sexual exploits. What will it take to drive a stake through their hearts so the Democrats can move forward without the Clinton's drama and ethical baggage?
Will. (NYC)
Here the Nixon folks start blabbing about "rigged" elections. That is dangerous rhetoric.
Robert B (Brooklyn, NY)
"Fortuitous" is seeing that there's no "contrast" between Cuomo and Trump. Trump is killing investigations into his pervasive criminality and corruption; Cuomo pulled the plug on the Moreland commission to kill investigations into his corruption. Trump's closest advisers are indicted daily; Joseph Percoco, Cuomo's executive deputy secretary and closest confidant, was recently convicted of corruption charges, including soliciting and accepting more than $300,000 in bribes. In 2017 Trump rammed through a tax bill stealing money from all Americans, giving it to billionaire donors, and creating deficits so large they will destroy Social Security and Medicare; in 2016 Cuomo tried to ram through the most regressive and unjust state budget at the behest of wealthy donors, it would have decimated everything from health services to food programs for children and the elderly. Coumo lost only because local State Assembly Democrats stopped him. Trump's budget had huge cuts for public education; Cuomo tried to slash funding for CUNY despite all studies showing it's very economically run, a model of public education, and a bedrock of affordable higher education for hard working New Yorkers of limited means. Trump killed funding for crucial infrastructure; Cuomo refused to do anything to fix the subways for 8 years and repeatedly took money already allocated for system, for things like repairs, and gave it to ski resorts. Coumo is nothing but a narcissistic and corrupt man, just like Trump.

Which be the worse fate: Rule by a pretentious egomaniac with a talent for corruption, or rule by a self-possessed dilettante who thinks reading a script written by others conveys erudition? Hm. Tough one. Do we sell out, take the pensions, the IRAs, the 401-Ks and the next 30 years of consumption, kids and grandkids, and the inevitable passing on of the legacy, to a more saner, freedom-favorable and less officious State. That's an easy one. Hello Wyoming!
Taly (Samuel)
Why Nixon though? What does she know? Haven't we had enough of entertainers playing at politics? I certainly have, I prefer someone who knows the law, has read the constitution, understands the logistics and management of a state, please...no more experiments...please go away Cynthia, I hear a sequel is in the works!
DaveG (Manhattan)
A good re-read, when considering Andy Cuomo for anything more than dog catcher: a history of how he created the anti-corruption commission, the Moreland Commission, and then shut it down when it got to close to him and his cronies: “Cuomo’s Office Hobbled Ethics Inquiries by Moreland Commission”, NYT, 7/23/14 https://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/23/nyregion/governor-andrew-cuomo-and-th... One quote from that article: “But a three-month examination by The New York Times found that the governor’s office deeply compromised the panel’s work, objecting whenever the commission focused on groups with ties to Mr. Cuomo or on issues that might reflect poorly on him.” I’m not surprised Clinton would now endorse him, given her own past and her own character, or lack thereof. However, as a registered Democrat, I’ll never vote for him. And Nixon just seems like a distaff, left-of-center version of a Trump TV personality, with many of the same disqualifications. She has, however, called for a reinstatement of the Moreland Commission to investigate state corruption.
cheryl (yorktown)
Cuomo's NYS reality show is one Hillary Clinton should have found reason to delay entering with an endorsement - which will have NO effect on the primary. It looks like a payoff - but for what? There are many things about Hillary - and Bill - that I respect - but both have the habit of creating perfect cringe-worthy moments. Like many Dems I am simply unhappy: hoping for reform, doubtful that Nixon has the power to pull together a voting coalition to effect change in Albany, if she can win over any but a select downstate group of backers. Teachout - - maybe. We need a strong AG candidate, and definitely a way to convince upstate that this isn't soley about NYC issues.

Have we learned nothing? Another show business celebrity with no experience in government? Sorry to have to admit it, but politics is a profession. The art of compromise, the ability to get people who are diametrically opposed to each other to find common ground, is a special talent. That many of us find this talent hard to understand and trust only emphasizes how special it is.
Che Beauchard (Lower East Side)
"The art of compromise, the ability to get people who are diametrically opposed to each other to find common ground, is a special talent." Thank you, Paul, for pointing out one of Mr. Cuomo's greatest weaknesses. If anyone cannot fine common ground, Mr. Cuomo has illustrated that it is he who cannot do so. Could we find anyone who is less inclined to work with others than Mr. Cuomo?
Joe Paper (Pottstown, Pa.)
Paul, We have learned that an outsider can come in and get things done..that insiders have sometimes purposely delayed. We have learned that the insiders will do anything to destroy an outsider. Maybe even fabricate a fake story to take down this poor lady. We have learned that Feminist care more about political control and power than Feminism.
Cat (Upstate NY)
A magnificent intellect and temperament is more important than experience so I've no qualms about giving Cynthia Nixon a go at the office. Abraham Lincoln had virtually no experience except for 1 term in the House when he became President. Harvey Milk had zero experience but became an icon and inspiration to others who want a go at political office. Lighten up and give the inexperienced a chance.
Taly (Samuel)
Exactly what Trump voters said. Perfect logic. Brilliant idea, no experience - just a great mind, with really good words...
The Iconoclast (Oregon)
Clinton, Cuomo? Haven't you learned anything?
brockse47 (Los Angeles)
Not really newsworthy that a 2 term incumbent maintains his advantage at this stage; only slightly more so that a party leader valiantly endorses 2 term incumbent who has to date avoided indictment or acute disaster for the sake of unity that already may be gone. I'll differ with HRC for once and hold her in no less regard for it. And while he may maintain an advantage throughout, I believe this will be a hard fought contest to the end, the outcome unclear until all ballots counted. The future will see more clearly than the present his timid manipulative style, failure to lead or accomplish much. Divisive Senate caucus, no ethical reforms Albany, questionable integrity his own office, no significant actions on environment, pity for him equal marriage right moved so quickly from the fringe to the center among Dems. win or lose his elective career over. Contrast with CA Gov. Brown's record. Note well Cynthia Nixon's years of civic activism and advocacy; the absence of purpose to his campaign. Easily found from here out, look for LJ; he'll never be far.
Roget T (NYC)
Is anyone else weary of these "sharp-elbowed" politicians? Clinton endorsing Cuomo? That's just great, especially for Nixon. The only thing worse would be Donald Trump endorsing Cuomo. And the sideshow playing out for the AG nomination is just as sad. What the Democrats need is an attorney who has worked before in the AG's Office, preferably someone from Upstate to balance the ticket. The position needs a person of integrity who is more lawyer than politician. Look at the previous "sharp-elbowed" AGs: Spitzer, Cuomo, Schneiderman.
JB (Austin)
Cynthia Nixon can only hurts us.
common sense advocate (CT)
Tonight's a good night to explain to NY democrats that if you want Cuomo out, you need to replace him with someone at Stacey Abrams' level - a thoroughly proven political and intellectual heavyweight. Experience is NOT optional to run New York.
Lawrence (Washington D.C.)
Showbiz personalities in this case can just step onto the Jimmy Choos of power and the machine will run itself. If the scene doesn't work out we can just reshoot it. Won't someone please give that woman a show or series. It will be far cheaper. And less painful to watch.
Majortrout (Montreal)
Will Hillary Clinton just go away into the sunset or the Clinton Foundation. Her time has passed!
Mara (CT)
I’m tired of celebrities who can only claim that they are highly qualified for positions based on their “ acting” experience with no seasoned experience working with various strata of society, diplomatic skills in comprised, but not necessarily perfect solutions, arrived after hours/days of talks with people who may actually hate.... well, we just have to put a minimum qualification for the job; Actors and Celebrities with no governing experience and no degree in law or political science NEED NOT APPLY! Sick of celebrities in politics!!
Steve (New Jersey)
“I would be surprised if it doesn’t turn out to be a rigged situation,” said Billy Easton... Already the backpedaling begins toward the inevitable cratering of this doomed campaign. Governor Cuomo understands the concept of compromise and getting things done. To those who stand on tiny soapboxes and demand their way like a child might, compromise is never acceptable. But that’s the way it works. We all want different things; horse trading and compromise are the essence of our system. Ms. Nixon knows nothing of any of this and would be an unmitigated disaster for the Empire State.
kay (new york)
Cuomo got us free tuition, lowered our taxes and gets climate change. He has years of experience and in the age of Trump, NY is going to need it. I like Nixon and want pot legalized, but she seems highly focused on only NYC and not the rest of the state. Her main focus seems to be NYC education. It's just not enough.
Moses (WA State)
For the sake of New Yorkers and the country, I am hoping that Clinton's endorsement is the kiss of death, that adds to the Govenor's corruption issues. This has to be the end of the old-guard Democratic leadership, that no longer bears any semblance to the true anti-GOP Democratic Party.
George (NY)
The Democratic party and its machinery provides us with yet another proscribed set of choices and promotes a fatally flawed candidate who will pursue his career with great ego to the loss of us all.
EDG (Manhattan)
Wait, America, until Andy Cuomo pursues national office. Then you'll directly experience yet another "fatally flawed candidate".
Rusty Shackleford (New Hartford, NY)
Hillary Clinton: I'm with Him! Makes for a snappier title for your article. And illustrates the hypocrisy of establishment Dems.

Well, if Hillary is for him, who can be against him?
stan continople (brooklyn)
In their NY primaries, both Cuomo and Clinton won NYC handily but fared dismally upstate, save for a few urban centers. In fact, the maps are almost identical. Their opponents, Teachout and Sanders, both progressives won most rural counties. Rather than assume that all rural voters are by default Republicans, maybe they're just looking for a good reason to vote Democratic, something Cuomo or "beloved" Senator Clinton did not provide. When Clinton gives her speech for Cuomo she can just recycle one of her Goldman Sachs favorites. I'm sure there will be plenty of people in that audience who'll remember it fondly.
George (NY)
This is a nice idea, Stan. I'd dearly like it to be so but my experience growing up near Watertown, NY indicated otherwise. Maybe I developed a case of confirmation bias, maybe, but I perceived no path for a majority of my neighbors outside of Republican, under no realistic circumstances, that is...possibly the Rapture could tip the scales toward Democrats.
Common Sense (New Jersey)
I love Hillary and voted for her or Bill at least nine times including primaries ('92, '92, '96, '96, '00, '00, '08, '16, '16), but she's backing the wrong horse here. Andrew Cuomo is an ENEMY of UNIONS and PUBLIC SCHOOLS, and up to his neck in corruption.
Charles (New York)
I don't agree with Mr. Cuomo on a number of things and he has had his share of problems (some self inflicted). However, he is seasoned, experienced, and is leading a state facing clear problems. "Buzz" is not going to cut it. Mr. Cuomo has not been charged with, or convicted of, any illegal wrong-doing. Rough and tumble politics, while disappointing, is not a crime.
Randy (Washington State)
I worked with Andrew Cuomo when he was at HUD. His only goal there was to promote himself and his political ambitions. It never seemed to occur to him that you accomplished that via good work.
FunkyIrishman (member of the resistance)
As a Liberal, I want the most progressive ideas to win in any debate and want to those ideas put into practice via legislation and laws. Having said that, ( again as a Liberal ) what I am looking for is at the very least, for Cuomo to pushed to the left as far as possible and held accountable to stay there. I am sure others will jump on that idea ( and perhaps for me saying it out loud ) but I am also suspecting that many are feeling the same way. If Nixon wins the nomination and then wins the election and then governs effectively, then I would be more than pleased. We shall see.

for pete's sake already keep clinton OUT of it! enough already.
LESNYC (Lower East Side)
"Hillary Clinton will deliver the keynote address on Wednesday and endorse Mr. Cuomo’s candidacy for a third term" And so it begins anew...the decimation of the Democratic Party heading into mid-terms and 2020 because callow leadership refuses to lead, refuses to follow, refuses to get out of the way. A career-closet-Republican endorses another career-closet-Republican proving again how utterly rudderless the DNC truly is. Both of these has-beens are filthy rich and controlled by Corporate America. They clearly do not represent the real interests of the majority of our party members and truly offer nothing other than status quo protection and passive centrism.
Mello Char (Here)
I'm sorry but Hilary doesn't exactly have much support at the moment. God bless her but she is the reason things are so bad right now. Entrenched political operatives aren't what's needed now. Someone who shut down a corruption commission isn't what's needed either. Can't they see that. Oh yeah, that's why the Presidential election was lost, because entitled Liberals shamed people who only wanted a job. Thanks.
ELB (NYC)
Has Hilary no shame endorsing a phony Democrat like Cuomo, and betraying a real female Democrat like Cynthia Nixon? Hilary and her husband, by their numerous personal and public failures, and by selling out to wealthy special interests, have done more to undermine real Democrats and liberals, provide fodder for Republicans to capitalize on, and thus be instrumental in helping Republicans take over our government, than Carl Rove. This doesn't pass the smell test. One can only imagine what Cuomo has promised Hilary in return.
Vicki (NYC)
The Democratic Party's Nominating Convention tomorrow will be Andrew Cuomo's party and he'll trample you if he wants to. (apologies to Lesley Gore.) Yes. Cuomo will win the day. The room will be filled with people whose lives depend on not ruffling the feathers of the king. He's brought in Clinton and Biden and I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see The Obamas on video. The goal is to deny Cynthia Nixon the 25% she would need to place her name on the ballot in the September primary. It may succeed. Nevertheless, Cynthia has another option which is to petition her way onto the Democratic Primary ballot in September, which she certainly will do. Tomorrow may make the Governor feel good but it will have little to no effect on the voters.
Vox (NYC)
Sadly, Cuomo has the "ethics" of Nixon... Richard Nixon, that is! And NYers will get the shaft again. Cuomo, the last of the corrupt "three men in a room," as Preet Bharara termed them, to NOT be convicted and/or sentenced to jail time... yet... The others being Joe Bruno and Sheldon Silver. When will Cuomo's turn come? He seems to richly deserve the same fate as those betrayers of the public's trust.
Rodger Lodger (NYC)
All Nixon knows is liberal/progressive chin music. Governing the State of New York is not a job for amateurs. I'll wager she hasn't even read the state Constitution, or ever had a conversation with a Republican state leader. I liked the TV show quite a bit, but I don't see starring in it as a credential for taming the snake pit in Albany.
Rusty Shackleford (New Hartford, NY)
Let the establishment hatchet-jobs commence!
Y (NY)
Cuomo has been so focused on doing the right things to build a presidential resume that he's let the subway rot and gotten into some shady deals with donors, leading to his right hand men going to prison. He's gotten too comfortable with power. Go, Cynthia Nixon, go!
edg (nyc)
an endorsement from hillary should be the kiss of death for any thinking person.
Boregard (NYC)
I will not vote for Nixon. No way. Zero political, legislative, budgeting, committee, etc, experience in the NYS legislature is a suicide mission. She'll end up being told what to do, when to do it, how to do it, etc. It'll be governing as Governor by staffers that she gathers along the way...much like Trump. He collected hangers-on, both as celebrity, and as candidate, now as President. This is not an attempt to wedge him into this discussion. Merely using him as an example, multi faceted example of what ails us as a nation. This seeking of saviors, and grand fixers. People with more hype, then substance, and a proper resume for the job at hand. Right now there are factions in the US that are over zealous in their anti-insider, anti-bureaucrat, anti-institution rhetoric...and its not good, very unhealthy. Esp. as its mostly based in fear mongering, vicious lies, and outright anti-democratic, anti-constitution propaganda. And its pulling us apart at the seams...if we let it. If We let it. There is a role, a need for bureacrats, public servants and experienced govt officials. We the people, need to keep not only their feet to the fire, but our own as well. To stop walking away after we flip that voting switch, fill in the oval and insert the ballot. Stop walking off from our duty as We the People and indulging our apathy, and expectations of grand fixes, that in one day, month, or executive order reshuffle the deck to deal us the right hand. Nixon is not the answer
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)

Smoke and mirrors. Focus on all state senate seats that can flip democratic. Cuomo has not been effective. But, a large part of the problem is Republican control of the Senate. Now, I do have an open ear for moderates but the Republican Party in NY is not issue substantive. It’s a shill for the real estate lobby. Not just the idc but the entire party runs on funds from the Corporate landlord lobby. Their great alliance with suburban republicans is based in anger at property taxes. Imagine what could be achieved with these people out of the way?
Dlud (New York City)
Who is the Republican candidate for governor? We have had Republican governors in this state. Why are we so sure that it has to be Cuomo or Nixon? Can someone explain?
South Of Albany (Not Indiana)
We’ll see, but even with a three way race Cuomo is still in lead. And, that’s my point - there’s not much to the NY Republican Party other fantastic funding from lobbying. A real platform, not so much. So no, I don’t see a strong republican contender for governor this year. It’s practically June already
Lamota Habla (New York )
Can Hilary Clinton please stay away? Nothing against her. She’s just toxic until the republicans loose control.
Bill (Albany, New York)
Having Hillary Clinton as a convention keynote speaker does not place Andrew Cuomo on a "surer political footing." If anything, it is an ominous sign for his re-election campaign reminding everyone of the 2016 campaign, and all that it takes to lose.
Richard Davis (NY)
I've been a loyal Democrat in NY for 40 years. I haven't nor will I vote for Andrew Cuomo. Cynthia Nixon is my choice.
Mark (Stamford, CT)
How can anyone possibly consider putting the giant economy and adminstration of NY State under control of a person with so little relevant experience? Isn't Nixon's naivete and lack of humilty a disastrous combination? All the sincerity and dedication in the world doesn't make it right for her to presume such enormous reponsiblilty for all New Yorkers.
Harry (NE)
How did the nation let a first time senator with no experience ("except for a great speech") in charge of 300 million people n 2008?
Mayda (NYC)
Prior to his presidential campaign, Barack Obama was already a constitutional scholar and had 8 years as a state senator in the Illinois legislature.
Dlud (New York City)
I assume that you are referring to Obama. He had been elected to local office and he had a law degree from Harvard. And even he came across at times as unseasoned. But he was not a TV actor. If we repeat the Trump election, New York voters deserve what they get. But it does raise the question of whether democracy is a viable political system when we are so easily swayed.
