The number of Puerto Ricans in the Orlando area has obviously impressed those politicians vying for a national office. Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson is the only Democrat to hold a state wide political office in Florida today, and he has defeated every Republican nominee that he has faced since the 2000 election. Nelson still looks unbeatable in what appears to be a Democratic year although Governor Rick Scott is Nelson's toughest opponent to date. Scott has the money and the background qualifications to make it a serious race. He has injected the issue of term limits into the contest by implying that Nelson has been in office too long. It should be a close race and the outcome may be influenced by national politics in November.

Puerto Ricans have been an important part of Florida's culture for many years. Their presence early on permeated food and restaurants, music and art from Tallahassee to Miami and they assimilated seamlessly with Floridians. One of their many noble qualities is a love of truth and with this as a measuring stick, Bill Nelson stands very tall compared to the scandal-shackled Gov. Scott. Sen. Nelson is the very model of what a public official should be with a glowing reputation for honesty, hard work and effectiveness. Also, he is a tough guy in the ring who can throw a mighty blow. Democratic candidates running in other parts of the country could learn some valuable lessons watching him take on Scott and administer a long overdue spanking on election day.

This could be a major pandering challenge, even for Florida pols. How about full federal compensation for homes and contents that were not insured nor registered on property rolls but subject to alleged owner's best guestimate ?

Excellent. I love seeing Senator Nelson there. Please, please, PLEASE point out the complete lack of meaningful progress in the clean-up, and just WHO is " in charge ". Florida Voters : YOU have the most at stake of any STATE in the restoration of PR. Vote Democratic, and get your relatives, friends and neighbors to vote. It's on YOU.

It’s great that Senator Nelson and other candidates are visiting Puerto Rico as they campaign for the upcoming election, but that’s just not enough. Unless the candidates are blind or choose to only visit San Juan then they must see that things are not OK and federal agencies have not done nearly enough to help rebuild critical roads, water and electric infrastructure and more help is desperately needed, especially in the rural mountain communities. Almost nine months after the twin hurricanes and still thousands are without power. The federal relief effort was simply inadequate and something needs to be done to help these fellow Americans.
