Several months in a boot for a sprain? I'm guessing you're so gracious that you're minimizing the extent of your injury (or you may need a new orthopedist!)

Good work Blythe. I'm reminded of the beginning of the Odd Couple where Tony Randall takes a woman's arm to help her across a street and she turns and whacks him with her purse. I guess the key is to act only when requested.
There is def a certain age cutoff; when you are younger people keep a distance from you. If in my 30's I had walked up and offered to walk a woman anywhere, she would likely have screamed bloody murder. But as you age folks smile and talk with you. It is good to now be in the latter group, but I'm not always sure that I enjoy being viewed as being completely harmless. Lol.

you all are up far too early, but I'm glad there's commentary already.

New York's best.
I'll never forget the two gentlemen who stopped their car and jumped out to help my late wife who had fallen while crossing the street.
So nice to read such stories.

Uplifting. Being a suburbanite all of my 61 years I viewed city life as cold and impersonal. Within the last year I took an apartment in the general vicinity of this act of kindness. I find the people to be as friendly and welcoming as any suburban or rural area I have lived in. The neighborhood feel is just wonderful.

Notice also how many friendly babies and dogs are in this neighborhood?
A middle aged man opened the door for me to exit a cafe. I thanked him, and he said "My mama taught me to be nice to little old ladies."

True Feminism .. the instinct to help one another in women of a certain age. Thanks for sharing your story.

Please not the poor choice of words- she asked would you mind helping me across the street and
I said yes sounds like you mind helping not that you would be happy to help. The answer should have been of course not - I would be happy to help you cross the street.
She was happy to help and what a nice encounter.

@Surfer she is my teacher I think she knows her own grammar.
We—all of us—get by with a little help from our friends, and friendly strangers who offer the kindnesses which mean everything. You are well named Blythe;

Dear Blythe, The reason my comment ends abruptly with a semicolon is that I inadvertently hit “send”
before I had the chance to add and express the hope that your sprained ankle is mending nicely and that you will soon no longer need that boot. Allen

Two sweet ladies with class.

Good story! Stopping in the middle of the crosswalk felt more rural (or maybe the boroughs) than the parts of Manhattan I’ve lived in - but actually, I don’t get to the Upper East side ALL that much!
Tune of These Boots Are Made for Walkin'
You’re assisting when you could use assistance
That’s a true New Yorker thing to do
Thanks for taking time to go this distance
But I pray we’ll make it ‘cross the avenue!
Your boot was really shocking
It’s looked so big and wide
But now that I’m sure you’re steady
Let’s get us to the other side.
(Are you ready, boot? Let’s move it before the light changes.)
Your boot was really shocking
It stopped me in my tracks
But now that we both made it
I can breathe out and relax.

I don’t know how you do it, Freddie, but just keep on doin’ what you’re doin’, man. Thank you so much. We love it!

Freddie, your tunes give me LIFE! Especially on this bland rainy spring day. Thank you!

To "Freddie’s #1 Fan" - Mom, thanks - but you couldn't have chosen a more subtle screen name for that post? :) And if by some chance you actually are Mom, remember, you gave ME life, so I owe you!
