On the way to find a diner in the boondocks of Lisle, Ny., we lost the diner and found a local small batch distillery called French Distillars and Alchemists. If you are in Upstate Ny, do not pass it by. Corn whiskey, Bourbon, wheat whiskey, and my favorite - a blessedly smooth, flavorful rye.

One cannot help but think that had The Times' mindset and staff been on the ground in World War II Paris, you'd have despaired at the Wehrmacht stomping down the Champs Elysees, but rejoiced at finally being able to get a decent beer and good schnitzel.

I have perfectly understood your mornings can't really compare...but these few lines are for Tom Wolfe, who just passed away...about another journalist, this one an English in NY: "The telephone blasted Peter Fallow awake inside an egg with the shell peeled away and only the membranous sac holding in intact." So what’re you sipping?

Taken in moderation you say.... how do you define moderation?

"Journalist Drinks Whiskey"...now there's a "dog bites man" story ever there was one!

L'Chaim!! Enjoy it while you can Mr. Risen. Nobody is 41 forever. One day, may it be a long time in coming, you will take that standard blood test and the doctor will look up and tell you that your liver functions are starting to look problematical. Time to cut down or cut out. But until then....

Congratulations on having two jobs that are both so fulfilling. I know a lot of people who rely on the one because they hate the other. I read this piece while sipping a fine Kentucky bourbon, a fact that would shock most people who know me. I've been a beer drinker for most of my life but a bad cold and an appointment I couldn't miss brought me to a bar on long island that told me I could have an Irish Coffee only if I provided the coffee from an outside source. I didn't want to do that so I left it up to the assembled patrons to pick a fine spirit to help with the common cold. Rum, tequila, scotch and bourbon were all ordered but I didn't have to continue after my first bourbon. I was hooked and after two years I know the good ones from the bad. I no longer have to deal with the frenzied pace of having to drink a gallon of beer to get a good buzz and, because of that, I've lost both weight and those nasty hangovers. I"m soory I can't attend the tasting that's advertised but you may steal this toast from me, since I stole it from Homer Simpson. "To alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all the problems in the world."

A great article - coming from a whisky fan myself. Single malt - infinite variety - infinite experiences.
