Love this show. Full of atmospherics, great casting and acting. Quick Question - Does Lazlo know (from Cyrus) that Cooper killed Mary?

If the show is following the novel (which it seems to be) then yes, he does know. Even still, he primarily blames himself for it, partly because he recognizes that Connor is just a pawn in a wider network of corruption and partly because his childhood experiences (which are more than hinted at in this episode) have left him prone to self-reproach.

The best tv show on right now. Love it. Acting superb, good script. Leaves me wanting more every week. Will be sad to see it go - the rest of television is mind numbing wasteland.

I find the show just rivets you to the screen. Easily one of the best shows now on television.

I'm glad to hear so many positive reactions to the series and I will give it another try when it comes out on DVD. I say "another try" since while watching the first two episodes the filming seemed to be taking place almost exclusively in the dark night and general gloom, and I couldn't make head nor tails of the story since I was so distracted trying to see what was going on! So many films and series use this "dark filming"; I assume to set a mood. But I wonder if I'm the only one who loses interest when not being able to see what I'm supposed to be watching.

I desperately want the producers and network heads to make this a weekly crime/drama series.

I love this series! Its very well wrote and keeps your attention all through the show. The actors are wonderful. Can we have more series like this? I felt awful Mary was killed and I hope Connor gets his in the end. Again, kudos to the whole cast.

Some of the best work on the show has been the silences, Kriezler and Cyrus this week. And Commissioner Roosevelt when dealing with Byrnes, JP Morgan and all the corruption around him, holds his tongue but you see him ready to let loose. Did Connor just have a flesh wound or is he a really fast healer? It didn't seem so last week.

I love this series and will be sorry when it ends. I wish we could get more programs like this on television instead of the usual police/lawyer/doctor dramas that are on television ad nauseum.

We need a return to more time limited mini-series with beginning, middle & end; not the open ended let it drag on far too long serials that predominate. But, those, like this, were based on well written books.

Also overlooked by Mr. Collins was Cyrus's aborted attempt to exact revenge on Connor.

is it just me? I cant for the life of me appreciate Mr Bruhl's performance, the others seem just fine. of course the real star is the sets , and costumes. which I presume will be used in the 2 sequels... mr bruhl, alas, Is hard to understand vocally, and has a look of perpetual lost wonder... in all, tho, awesome series and I am eager for more. (can he be recast?)

Cynthia: It ain't just you; as much as I'm enjoying the series, Bruhl is obviously a graduate of the Peter Lawford/June Allyson School of Not-Too-Fine Acting

Totally disagree. Bruhl's performance is understated, very effective and, not being a native english speaker, I have no problem understanding him. Also, being a follower and admirer of his work in the last few years, he was the main reason I tuned into the series and I'm awfully glad I did.

Didn't Caleb Carr write only one sequel to "The Alienist"--"The Angel of Darkness"?

An excellent episode. I yelled when the killer opened the locker door on hapless Joseph, in spite of myself. Mr. Collins last week you feared the show would degrade to become about retribution, so you didn’t see Dr. Kreizler’s retreat coming?, well, neither did I. Kudos to the writers for that twist. Dr. Kreisler has been coming to terms with his humanity: falling in Love, dealing with loss and Grief and finally, coming to terms with his past. Here’s rooting for him to complete his heroic journey and, with the team’s help save the day.

My wife and I have found this series, despite the subject matter, immensely satisfying, with its inventive cinematography, story pacing and its measured development of this flawed group of dedicated truth seekers. All of the leads are remarkably good (is there any recent woman actress so skilled as Dakota Fanning at 24 years of age??) in their nuanced roles, each with personal flaws or challenges, with the grim task of solving a serial crime spree, all the while with one eye on the corrupt police and politicians who care little of the victims, except TR. Kudos to creators and TNT for investing in this excellent series, which puts many of the HBO and Showtime series to shame.
