Vanessa Trump, Donald Trump Jr.’s Wife, Files for Divorce

richard (northern hemisphere)
I'll believe it if they actually separate physically and visitation is set up.
Joe in Philadelphia (Philadelphia)
Imagine how miserable she must have been to take this step: 12 years of marriage, 5 young kids, living a life of luxury and privilege, father-in-law is president of the United States. You don't walk away from that unless you just can't stand it another day.
Christopher Szala (Seattle, Wa.)
When Mueller indicts Jr., which he will, she will be able to at least build a financial firewall between him and herself/children. It is not to say the Jr.'s money is all Russian, but probably enough questionable transactions that assets could be tied up for awhile. This way she can be removed from it.
Matt (Plymouth Meeting)
"We ask for your privacy." So THEY don't want privacy?
de'laine (Greenville, SC)
Bless me that I married a normal, decent, intelligent, honest, compassionate, caring man who works for a living, separate from his parents and siblings. One could envy these people, but I feel sorry for them.
Horseshoe crab (south orleans, MA 02662)
Politics and personalities aside. Always sad and problematic life event in all too many cases - let's hope they can surmount their differences and act in the best interests of the children.
Francois (Chicago)
He has established himself globally as a spoiled fool. His father is indebted to people who poison the people who cross them. Whatever facade the Trumps- by-blood try to maintain, the people who married into the family at least have the option to separate themselves from this tangled nightmare.
Leland Smith (Gig Harbor, Washington)
Perfect timing. Strictly a business move to separate and preserve assets.
AnitaSmith (New Jersey)
First and foremost, with the Trumps, it's always going to be about the money.
paul (alaska)
What effect on the spousal privilege in a criminal investigation if they are divorced?
LKK (California)
Lots of people here imagine that this is a ploy whereby he will transfer a boatload of assets to her in case he turns out to have problems that lead to forfeiture or fines. Things like that usually don't work in the U.S. In general, Courts don't allow you to protect assets by transferring them in the face of wrongdoing and being prosecuted. They can - and do - "undo" the transaction. It is often referred to as "fraudulent conveyance". I think the fact she has hired a criminal law attorney is to make sure that whatever deal she agrees to doesn't put her in legal jeopardy, or does things like cover her legal fees if she has a whole bunch in case Don Jr. becomes entangled in a big legal battle. She undoubtedly has a prenuptial agreement, but one imagines that the Trumps will be open to re-negotiating the terms lest she become hostile. But it will be fascinating to see what happens.
hen3ry (Westchester, NY)
And we're supposed to care about this because? The real news would be if Melania divorced Donald Sr.
AnitaSmith (New Jersey)
Not before all of the incriminating ducks -- after thorough vetting -- are lined up in a row.
Portland (Oregon)
Because all the Trumps are running this country like a family business.
K D (Brooklyn)
Unfortunately, because no one takes Melania's words seriously, she would likely be discarded—as an afterthought. This president does not crumble in the face of scandals, most of which are his own creation. There will likely be one monumental event/charge that will knock him out of office, and then its Pence time. The question is, when he's gone will we continue to be at war with ourselves?
EC (Expat In Australia)
Liberation is a wonderful thing! Good luck and future happiness to Vanessa and the kids.
Richard McCartan (Olympia, WA)
Five kids, running the Trump Organization (with Dad looking over his shoulder), going through a divorce, and facing a probable indictment. I hope he finds some time to relax.
CT (NYC)
An uncontested and speedy divorce. I would not be surprised if this was a ruse to transfer the Trump millions to her bank account before Junior goes to jail.
otherwise (Way Out West between Broadway and Philadelphia)
Good observation. I do not doubt that Mueller will follow the money, however Junior tries to stash it. He is onto their games.
PManos (Aldgate SA, AUS)
I expect Ms Trump has conducted her own behind closed door interrogation of her husband about his involvement in her father-in-law's campaign and reached her own conclusions about what impact that is having now and will continue to have going forward on their lives and those of their children. No doubt Bannon's disclosure in Wolff's book ("what did we have, a hundred women? Kasowitz took care of all of them.") and Michael Cohen's current interest in a certain Ms Daniels also figured somewhere in Ms Trump's conversations with her husband.
Neal (New York, NY)
I predict Don Jr. will find some way to lay off at least part of the expense of alimony and child support on the American taxpayers. He's the president's son and namesake, after all.
BCoulter (Portland)
I think that the people criticizing your placement of this story are missing what may be the underlying reason driving this divorce, and what may make it newsworthy. What a convenient time for a quick divorce, and subsequent transfer of assets...just when your family's business are being subpoenaed. This family's shady dealings are always so obvious.
Duncan (Los Angeles)
Please Gray Lady, take this off the front page and have/allow some dignity. People who wish gossip have plenty of places to go.
Cold Liberal (Minnesota)
No. This is the family involved with the destruction of American society. Leave the kids out of it, but Junior is fair game
Aunt Nancy Loves Reefer (Hillsborough, NJ)
I disagree. The tawdriness and vileness of the Trump family can serve as a useful example to everyone on how not to act.
Jzzy55 (New England)
Who cares.
Deirdre (New Jersey )
This all about preserving assets Junior will be indicted on numerous charges Junior will also be pardoned
Jim McCulloh (Princeton, NJ)
Donald Trump enjoys inflicting pain. But don't take my word for it, ask James Comey, Rex Tillerson or Andrew McCabe. Trump richly deserves our contempt. But his children and grandchildren do not. Please, let's be big enough to leave them out of it.
Guy Moore (Darmstadt, Germany)
I would agree about any members of the family who don't involve themselves in politics. But we should feel no compunction criticizing Don Jr and Ivanka, who have taken a very active political role supporting their father and what he does. But we should leave the children alone.
Neal (New York, NY)
You might have a point if Don Jr. had attempted to keep a low profile and avoid the spotlight these last 14 months. Instead he's been exploiting his notoriety for fun and profit.
Sjsocon (VA)
Those of us who did not vote for Trump and are not fans of the Trump family, would have liked Don Jr. to ask for privacy a long time ago and to never hear from him again! Unfortunately, Don, Jr. and his giddy quest for power and fame pushed his opinions into our lives while riding in his father's sidecar and trying to influence the election. So, if people want to comment on his divorce, I don't feel sorry for him. Don, Jr. asked for the limelight so here it is. He didn't take into consideration he was bringing his family along for the ride. Don, Jr.'s life has taken a turn and he could be suffering this downturn in his life. But he should look on the bright side, because this is an opportunity for him to grow and mature by sympathizing how the voters feel when his father makes terrible decisions which causes their lives to suffer. In addition, animals suffer when you kill them for sport and trophies. Looks like Don, Jr. has a long list of things he needs to tackle in order for him to finally grow up.
Denise (Phila)
Absolutely! Most people would ask for and expect privacy, but the Trumps, esp Jr chooses to live in the public eye. Sorry, but you can’t turn the public off when you have encouraged so long.
Sarah (N.J.)
denise The Trumps did ask for privacy.
Andrew (NorCal)
Her description of Trump Sr. back in 2003 says it all (you have to read the linked story about how they met). And yet he became President. Unbelievable.
Liz Gilliam (California)
The 2003 article also has this interesting tidbit: "It is that celebrity status that helps drive condominiums in Trump buildings to sell at a premium. In New York, condominiums flying the Trump name sold at a 36 percent premium over comparable properties in 2005, according to statistics compiled by the Corcoran Group." You can bet Mueller's been busy figuring out whether any part of that "36 percent premium" was the result of something a bit less glamorous, such as money-laundering.
Solemente Una Voz (Marco Island, Fla)
A marriage proposal at a Jersey mall? Very high quality.
Margie (Ann Arbor)
Exactly what is wrong with that? My husband proposed to me at an antique fair held in a barn. I didn't object and I doubt Vanessa Trump objected to the site of his proposal.
sirgroiney (seattle)
There is nothing wrong with your proposal location. I think for me the Donald Jr. proposal was a "reenactment" to get the ring free, so it wasn't the original proposal? I find that pretty tacky is all. I'm reading that your proposal happened once in an antique mall which is pretty cute. Congratulations!
Liz Gilliam (California)
What's tasteless about that proposal is not the location, but that he "recreated" the proposal in order to gett a freebie on the engagement ring -- though I suppose it would have been even more tacky if he'd bought a ring with a fake diamond.
MotownMom (Michigan)
Mr Mueller, you now have yet another investigative avenue. You may have to examine this sham of a divorce. Interesting timing since the Trump organization is now being forced to respond to your subpoena requests.
Jim In Tucson (Tucson, AZ)
No surprise here. When the zoo becomes a circus, it's time to leave.
Guy D. (NJ)
The last year has not been Camelot for the Trump family and America, as the Trumps probably hoped it would be. The country eagerly following the family as they did cool stuff and shared their lifestyles. I personally find it hard to get beyond the photo of Jr. proudly displaying the tail of an elephant he'd just needlessly killed.
Tom Q (Southwick, MA)
One less Trump for the headlines. Thanks, Vanessa.
Eric Weisblatt (Alexandria, Virginia)
Regardless of the debates raging here about privacy etc., here is more proof that you simply cannot make this stuff up - "At the time of their engagement, Mr. Trump accepted a ring from the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Short Hills, N.J., in exchange for publicity, recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall." Lord have mercy.
Nancy F. Sudik (Bethel, CT)
can she now testify against him?
Wilcoworld (Hudson)
Could it have dawned on her that canned trophy hunts of endangered wildlife aren't cool after all. That firearms kill and maim innocent school children. That her family absolutely refuses to do anything about them. What revelations! Enough is enough. That is if she did experience them. Can dream, can't I?
Chico (New Hampshire)
I have listened to Junior since he started shilling for his father and to be honest, I can't see what any smart woman would see in him, but they say there is someone for everyone. I have to think Melania is far behind in filing her divorce papers.
Javaforce (California)
I think Donald Trumps kids and his wife are doing their family and the country a huge disservice by just going along with Donald's wild behavior and ideas. Unfortunately the POTUS seems to have possibly broken several nepotism laws. If Donny Jr, Ivanka and Eric are going to be politically active they have to deal with the good the bad and the ugly.
E.D. (Chapel Hill, nc)
Will this nullify spousal privilege and allow her to testify against him if he is brought before a criminal court?
Details (California)
Spousal privilege does not forbid a spouse from testifying. She is "allowed" to testify against him today. Spousal privilege would mean she couldn't be compelled to testify.
mls (nyc)
No. It means that the accused, presumably Jr, can invoke the privilege and bar his wife from testifying.
John Grillo (Edgewater,MD)
A smart tactical move on Mrs. Trump's part. After Jr. is most Iikely indicted and convicted on federal charges involving internationally money laundering and conspiracy, and his ill-begotten gains from that criminal activity confiscated, there may not be many assets or available cash left to look to for alimony and child support payments. Get out, while the going's good!
Gerry Whaley (Parker, CO)
To All: Public figures get stared at 24/7 for good reason, headlines like this!
JohnV (Longwood FL)
In response to Vanessa Trump's divorce filing, Donald Trump Sr. will probably be tweeting: “Sad, I blame Obama, but on the plus side: legal costs will be paid for by Mexico”
itsmildeyes (philadelphia)
Not sure why this is open to comments, but since it is: it seems a bit ironic asking for decency and privacy from the family who brands us with nicknames, insults our friends, destroys our institutions, and paints targets on our backs. Just sayin'.
Ben Bochner (Eugene OR)
There is no better way to protect ill-gotten gains than to transfer them in a divorce. By the time creditors can get their hands on Junior's share of the loot, it'll all be in Vanessa's name. How much she'll want to share it with L'il Slick will be a matter for the lawyers to settle. Kind of the mirror image of the Stormy Daniels Gambit; Stormy undercharged because she charged pre-presidential rates. Vanessa's gonna cash out before the stock drops to zero.
Kuhlsue (Michigan)
Good point. I didn't think of that. Thanks for the insight.
Scott C (Philadelphia)
We read articles about Malia’s dresses, Chelsea’s and the Bush twins in trouble. The Kennedy children were always in the news. Presidential children, for better or for worse, are fodder for journalists, this is not a liberal or conservative issue. This isn’t fake news, or trolls, mean or judgmental, it’s just done and if you don’t like to read these stories, don’t read them, but please don’t complain, they sell newspapers.
Neal (New York, NY)
None of the presidential offspring you named was suspected of collusion with a foreign government or money laundering or treason or lying to federal investigators or using his father's position to enrich himself and his family — so what's your point?
Seb (New York)
When’s her book coming out?
Laura (Clarkston MI)
Why has Vanessa Trump hired a criminal defense attorney?
Neal (New York, NY)
To defend her against the criminal she's divorcing?
F31970 (New York)
Dang. Even the spouses are exiting. Is Melania next?
Ray (NC)
Eldest son?
Marcia Otto (San Francisco)
Is this news? Seems more like gossip to me.
Jon (New Yawk)
YAWN, and for a moment I thought I was reading the New York Post or the National Enquirer. Does anyone really care, and does this really fit the slogan "All the News That's Fit to Print?"
AS (Bangor, Maine)
Why does this divorce announcement merit the opening screen of the NYT? Placement in the developing stories feature, perhaps; but to give it space that should be devoted to substantive news for 24 hours gives support to those who claim the Times has lowered its standards to gain more clicks from those who feed off any negative Trump-related news. N.B. This editorial choice is particularly galling given your decision that the death of a sitting member of Congress, who has represented a NY district for more than 30 years, is not worth a mention even as a developing story much less placement on the opening screen. Louise Slaughter deserves better. So do your readers.
dda (NYC )
I feel bad for their children, who are too young to grasp the concepts of money laundering, bribery, sexism, race baiting, bullying, killing elephants for fun and election fixing. Apparently she has hired a criminal defense attorney instead of a divorce lawyer. The mind whirls as to the reasons why.
John C. Schofield (Rockbridge County VA)
I hope this inspires poor Melania to do the same.
Sherr29 (New Jersey)
"At the time of their engagement, Mr. Trump accepted a ring from the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Short Hills, N.J., in exchange for publicity, recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall." Everything you need to know about the Trump grifters in one sentence.
Third.coast (Earth)
Well, his mother divorced his father at around age 43, so this seems about right. A bit of advice from Don Jr's mother..."Don't get mad. Get everything!"
Donna (East Norwich)
The greatest tell was the Bailey, Banks and Biddle bit. I don't even know why I'm commenting. This belongs in the "who cares" file.
John L. Fairchild (Chattanooga, TN)
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but regardless of their party affiliation, I am growing tired of stories like this being considered newsworthy. I would expect to see this in the Enquirer, not the highly regarded national newspaper of record.
Neal (New York, NY)
"I am growing tired of stories like this being considered newsworthy." How many stories like this have there been?
mls (nyc)
Neal, this is newsworthy because it suggests that Jr knows that he is likely to face criminal charges and civil damage suits. He is moving his assets to safety.
Eve Waterhouse (Vermont)
So typical of a Trump that he would propose with a free ring.
JS (Detroit)
Come on guys....lighten up...they have a bunch of kids.... This is going to be very traumatic and difficult experience for their family..
Green River (Illinois)
or not.
Neal (New York, NY)
Imagine trying to get by on their meager resources and lack of rich and powerful connections.
Stevenz (Auckland)
trump family values.
Mike McD (NYC Area)
A private matter, for sure. The timing's interesting, though.
donald carlon (denver)
if you're the president or his adult children than your every action is fair game for reporters . Period It is a public office and so are his familys actions in that public office .
aghast a (New York)
Hmmmm..
Troutwhisperer (Spokane, Wa.)
Odd days indeed. A trophy already bagged escapes the big game hunter. You go girl!
BK (Boston)
Didn’t they have a pre-nup sup?
B.Sharp (Cinciknnati)
Who wants to be married to the fool ? Wish her happiness in future raising her five children.
anon (USA)
took 12 long years and 5 children to figure that out!
john plotz (hayward, ca)
Many comments here say that the divorce is a means of transferring and protecting assets. It may be so -- but that strikes me as a malicious speculation. Maybe they are getting divorced for the same reasons that other people get divorced -- personal reasons we do not know about and are none of our business.
EM Shain (NYC)
"We ask for your privacy during this time” about covers everything about the Trumps one needs to know. It's not "our" privacy" at stake, but hers. This is not a "non" story, as some are insisting. Mrs. Trump has, among other things, retained a lawyer who does mostly criminal law. The uncontested divorce comes as the Mueller Probe and possible NY State indictments loom. Any, all, or some combination could expose the family to criminal forfeitures. There's reason to be cynical. The Trumps en famille are destroying the country, violating every norm and tradition in a wild clutch for more wealth. This family has earned our opprobrium far more than our sympathy. None of them deserve the slightest break from anyone because they wouldn't dream of offering one to anyone other than themselves.
Alyce Miller (Washington d.C.)
For those saying the Trump divorce isn’t newsworthy and people should give the family privacy seem to forget that Donald Junior is a middle-aged man who has repeatedly placed himself in the limelight, taken a public role on Twitter tweeting out vile sentiments, jokes, and debunked conspiracy theories, and otherwise made himself a ready target. He is not a child like the last three sets of kids in the White House, and he has deliberately chosen to make himself newsworthy.
Barbara (SC)
I wish them both well but feel rather disgusted with myself for even reading about this personal business of the Trump family. If they weren't related to 45, this would not be in the news. I really don't care about these people any more than they care about me.
ohio (Columbiana County, Ohio)
I am disappointed as a Christian couple they did not attempt to reconcile their differences.
DR (New England)
Christian my left foot.
Joan P (Chicago)
What makes you think they didn't? Maybe they tried and failed. It happens.
Jacquie (Iowa)
Business strategy or simple divorce? I vote for business strategy since Mueller is moving in on the Trump Organization.
LKK (California)
It is curious that she hired a criminal defense attorney to represent her in the divorce. It looks like they are spinning it hard right now, talking about mutual decisions and respect. But one must wonder what she knows, and what she will want. Perhaps she wants to protect herself, but perhaps she knows something and wants to make sure she doesn't end up later being questioned or otherwise dragged in without her legal position being solid - and her legal fees paid for.
Eyeballs (Toledo)
Does anyone really buy this as anything more than a scam to shield as much Trump money as possible from the fines and penalties and forfeitures and lawsuits that will come when TrumpCo.'s business dealings are exposed as Russian money-laundering schemes and elaborate tax evasions? I was born at night but I wasn't born last night.
Kathy (Oxford)
She might be wanting a divorce now as a way of protecting assets but for her children not her husband, I'd bet. Because once divorced and assets in her name, well Junior, good luck getting it back. Any underlying agreement for that would be fraud.
BKMom (Brooklyn)
Junior's social media accounts are bizarre, combative and undignified. He has spent the last few years launching unrelenting attacks on Twitter and Instagram against those who oppose this administration. The sudden plea for privacy is curious coming from one who has plastered photos of his young children on Instagram, inevitably followed by ad hominen attacks on his target du jour. I do feel bad for the children that he has denied them any modicum of privacy. I do not feel bad for the adults involved that this story has piqued the public's interest. I also find it interesting that the news was broken by The New York Post. It makes it difficult for them to scream "FAKE NEWS" from one of the Murdoch media empire's mouth pieces. If the Trumps suddenly crave privacy, perhaps Donnie Jr. should shut down his Instagram account and keep his children as far from the fray as possible.
Canary in the Coal Mine (New Jersey)
I can't stand much of anything or anyone bearing the name of Trump. But i don't wish divorce on anyone, including Donald Jr. or Vanessa Trump. And I especially feel bad for their children. Godspeed and peace to all.
Thaddman (Hartford, CT)
I would imagine an uncontested divorce is a tactical move to protect her portion of family wealth, children's wealth, and address the likelihood that TRUMP businesses ran by DTjr who are just now being subpoenaed, will get crushed, with he and other Trump family members going to jail.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Excuse my ignorance here, but once these Trumps get divorced, would the Secret Service still be responsible for the safety & protection of their children?
Carl Hultberg (New Hampshire)
Please show this couple some respect and honor their family's privacy as they transfer assets frantically before being indicted. For the good of their beautiful children of course.
Michael (Santa Monica)
Carl, Funny.
zelda (Geneva)
"We ask for your privacy during this time." Sorry, my privacy is mine, no matter how nicely anyone named Trump might ask for it.
Dan88 (Long Island NY)
Does that mean the spousal privilege will be gone?
Bar tennant (Seattle)
It’s none of our business
weary1 (northwest)
I can't imagine wanting to delve into it and find out more--that is not our business if it doesn't use taxpayers' money--but reporting on it is certainly within the realm of appropriate "making it our business." They are public figures.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa.)
It is certainly our business if this is a tactic to avoid penalties for selling the country to Russia.
anon (USA)
If you are on social media and want to be in limelight, it will be for both good and bad. You can't have it for only good times.
Althea Frary (Cummington, MA)
No doubt this is a Trump preservation measure to ensure that the Feds don't get the fortune.
Kathy (Oxford)
Not entirely sure but if assets are from illegal gains they are still subject to confiscation. What is protected is any bankruptcy proceedings. Like not paying the lawyers who keep him out of jail.
Paul (Beaverton, OR)
While I agree that this is a "non story" in that one should respect the privacy of the President's family, Donald Jr. has clearly engaged in defending and pushing his father's agenda. Consequently, he just like First Lady Hillary Clinton, because of her public work in healthcare in the early 1990s, is worthy of media critique. Donald Jr. has in many ways been a particularly bombastic shill for his father, attending rallies and appearing on television to attack, sometimes with vitriol, his father's political opponents. Junior does not deserve the quarter often extended to political family members. I have no doubt that he would leverage a divorce of one of his political opponents for his advantage. What goes around comes around. Any coverage, however, should concentrate on Junior, not his wife, who as far as I can tell, has behaved in a dignified way. That in itself deserves praise. For being married to the likes of Junior would elicit a public, negative reaction from all but a saint.
Mike (From VT)
Who gets first dibs on the assets, the Ex or the Feds? I'd guess the feds.
Concerned Reader (boston)
The Feds haven't called for the assets yet. She undoubtedly already has. Unless the government can later prove that those assets were gained through illegal activity, she will get to keep them.
Expat (London)
The Feds will make sure that the up-coming divorce is not a way of shielding the assets from their reach.
DrT (Columbus, Ohio)
When they got married 12 years ago, the Trump name was already synonymous with wheeling, dealing, marketing, grandstanding, boorishness, etc. etc., etc. .... If privacy was what she covets, she should have kept her own surname - unless changing it was part of the nup- and/or pre-nup agreement....?
Tina (New Jersey)
An uncontested divorce means a quick payout and an even quicker escape before something interesting hits a fan. Sounds like a well-crafted strategy to me.
tom harrison (seattle)
Or, it could be something so simple as being spooked after opening a strange letter and telling your husband that you have had enough and are packing your bags. I do not see it as some strategy but rather a spouse who has had enough of politics that she did not sign up for.
Matt Pestle (Auckland)
How is this news? Did you see this bit: "We ask for your privacy at this time."? Please be the grownups in the room that we so frequently hear are needed.
Phil Thomas (Philadelphia)
Matt: I do think this is newsworthy, if for no other reason than it's curious timing. Nothing about this article strays from straight forward reporting. There is no attempt to attack the wife or children. While the identity and privacy of the children must be respected by all, Don Jr. decided a long time ago, to live a very public life. He played an instrumental role in the campaign, transition and continues to profit off his direct access to the so-called leader of the free world. As one of the first line of media defenders of his father, he is smug and dismissive of anyone who dares to disagree with his father. Lest we forget, there is the infamous meeting at Trump Tower. And now, subpoenas for business records for the business he runs. We need not know the details the failed marriage. But everything Don Jr. does from now on is fair game for scrutiny.
DR (New England)
No one is forcing you to read this. The Trumps are happy to dispense with privacy when they're out and about spending our tax dollars and enriching themselves at the expense of the rest of us.
Mars & Minerva (New Jersey)
It's news when a couple divorces in order to hide assets while their business records are being subpoenaed by Robert Mueller!
Sharon5101 (Rockaway Park)
Happy now bloggers? While you couldn't push Melania into leaving Donald I'm sure the impending divorce between Don Jr and Vanessa Trump makes a great consolation prize. Vanessa just couldn't take the heat that the infamy of the Trump surname now represents and decided to leave the kitchen before she got burned. Just what America doesn't need. -- another Trump train wreck.
farhorizons (philadelphia)
She is protecting assets, and my money is on the collusion of Little Donnie in all this.
dve commenter (calif)
au contraire. The more wrecks to the trumps the better it is ,as eventually they will all rue the day that don the con decided he could be the leader of the FREE world. Hubris will get you every time. Their businesses are failing, their reputation (if they had one) is just about gone, the Stormy weather is going to get MUCH more stormy and Mueller will indeed pull in the big fish. gone will be the money and the tower and everything. This divorce might have its origins in stress but like others I suspect that moving the money to a "safe" haven is what drives this. Alimony and child support for 5 kids will cost MILLIONS.
Mars & Minerva (New Jersey)
Oh the tragedy of a couple splitting up to hide their assets while being investigated by the FBI! I understand that's one of the leading causes of divorce among Con Men, Money Launderers and Putin's Puppets.
Kenya (USA)
She is getting out, before he is jailed, smart woman, now she needs to obtain a good lawyer!!!
Barbara (Canada)
curiously, she has hired a criminal defence lawyer for the divorce. So lots of questions here.
Shim (Midwest)
May be smart move on her part.
rich (MD)
Seems like she has had enough of the Trump Circus.
Investor (NJ)
Interests of children take first priority in any legal matters including any violations lodged against the family. Family courts have broad powers to protect children above any charges bought on by investigation underway.
Just a Thought (Houston, TX)
This isn't a divorce. This is a business strategy. Mueller just subpoenaed the Trump businesses. Vanessa is heading for the door, no doubt carrying a number of high profile Trump assets in her now-divested personal accounts, in an attempt to avoid persecution and possible forfeiture. Don't believe me? She has also hired a criminal defense lawyer.
skater242 (NJ)
Then wouldnt it make more sense to stay together being that spouses cannot testify against each other?
DickeyFuller (DC)
It may be too late to protect the assets. It's called fraudulent conveyance -- once you become aware that there is a 50.1% chance that you will have to turn them over, you cannot transfer them to a separate entity.
RJ (California)
Perhaps she knows Don Jr. is probably going to spend a long time in Attica. Vanessa, for her privacy and the sake of her kids, wants to take herself out of the spotlight. Perhaps she is the only Trump family member with a conscience and knows the end is near Don Jr. and his dad.
James McNeill (Lake Saint Louis, MO)
Time in Attica? No way. The Donald has a Presidential pardon ready at hand. All he has to do is say the word. A man who has no shame wouldn't hesitate to use it.
farhorizons (philadelphia)
A conscience? Or just another enabler?
Davis (Boston, MA)
She's going to pull as much money as possible from her husband before he goes bankrupt. Won't be surprised to see them get back together after he's gone through the whole process.
Leigh (Qc)
Hey, when you're a Trump you do what you have to do in order to be happy. Still, it's a little problematical for those five kids of theirs under the age of eleven. Especially for the middle child.
Bj (Washington,dc)
People who write that this isn't newsworthy nor should be on the front page of the times forget the Bush twins and all of they press they got, for good and bad behavior while their father was president. I don't see why a quick article about their divorce isn't something the public would find of interest. Don Jr. is now a public persona (as President's son and part of his campaign) and not entitled to the privacy one would expect for a regular person.
sophia (bangor, maine)
Trump's children want it both ways - they want the power by being a part of their father's presidency (illegitimate presidency) and they want their 'privacy' when they demand it. Can't have it both ways. Ivanka. Looking at YOU.
Anne (Portland)
He may be the president's child, but he's also a grown man who is responsible for being being in the spotlight not just as Trump's son but as someone who seems to actively engaged in questionable and possibly illegal behaviors.
Bottles (Southbury, CT 06488)
I am not a Trump supporter, but I do think it is tacky and tawdry to go after a couple who must be emotionally drained. Divorce is a wrenching experience, more so when kids are involved and they should be left alone, especially Vanessa Trump. She did not sign up for this circus and clearly she abhors the publicity. Also, I do not think it was correct for the NY Times to invite comments on this private matter and give a platform for people to spew their anti-Trump venom on a lady who has nothing to do with the Trump presidency.
otherwise (Way Out West between Broadway and Philadelphia)
It is an adage that Caesars wife must also be above suspicion. That said, I would liken the Trump Tribe to the other Five Families -- can even an in-law avoid the taint that comes with marrying into a clan of outlaws? Could she possibly avoid knowing things that she would rather not know?
farhorizons (philadelphia)
You are presuming that Little Donnie has any depth of emotion to be drained of.
DR (New England)
Cry me a river. These jerks are enriching themselves at the expense of the taxpayers and smirking and sneering at us while they do it.
Toska (Seattle)
A family that splashes its name everywhere and tweets incessantly asks for privacy? Ha!
May (Paris)
I used to envy rich people and I used to envy the trumps thinking they're having the time of their lives especially in light of being president. But after this piece of news about the divorce of Vanessa trump, I no longer have any illusions about these rich and famous. Did he really accept a free ring to engage his wife? Really? Or is this fake news? lol
sophia (bangor, maine)
The Trumps are all cheapskates! Of course, he took a free ring if he could. Just shows that no matter how much money you have, you can still be truly cheap.
Jack (Illinois)
She'll need a good lawyer. I wonder if she'll tap Gloria Allred?
sophia (bangor, maine)
She should try to get Stormy's lawyer. He seems pretty darn sharp.
retiree (Lincolnshire, IL)
No, Allred and her daughter are only for kinda low-brow messy stuff.
Jim S. (Oak Park, Illinois)
Jumping ship.
Dee (Los Angeles, CA)
She's getting out before her husband 's illegal dealings are revealed. Smart woman.
Anne (Portland)
I can't imagine marrying someone who kills large game for fun. It seems like a form of sociopathy.
Wally Wolf (Texas)
Don Jr. probably takes his Daddy frustrations out on innocent large game. I wonder how he'd come out in a fair fight.
NNI (Peekskill)
Maybe, Vanessa Trump could'nt stomach the the Trumps' wheeling and dealing behind the scenes and abhorred the devious, cruel ways the Trumps' conducted their business, stiffing the little people, stiffing the government of taxes, in fact all the sham and lies floating around her. As a mother she must have been very concerned about her children who would be imbibing Trump family values. True she might have married Trump Jr. for his money like Melania who might have married Trump Sr. But they are full of regrets now. Money will go only so far especially where her children's moral upbringing and her own integrity is severely tested. Most important she must fear for herself and all the mud that would stick to her because of the name Trump attached to her name. This picture says a thousand words.
Marti Mart (Texas)
That is a lot of maybes. How would you know any of these things about what she is thinking or feeling or what her moral standards are. Let us not just start making things up when we don't know any facts.
Bucketomeat (The Zone)
Trump, the lesser, has had a bad week. First Mueller subpoenas the Trump Organization, then his wife files for divorce....bummer.
tony (DC)
I suppose it would be off limits if I were to say ....I understand Reverend Dobson will be presiding over the divorce ceremony. Just want to echo the point made herein that the many Christian leaders who seem to be unconditionally backing Trump have a heavy burden of hypocrisy to carry. Divorce in families is a tough matter, one would want to grant the Trumps their cone of privacy but their personal attacks on those around them and their penchant for attacking vulnerable people in general, well it seems that the Trumps have forfeited some of the standard decorum and civility since they do not appear to respect such things.
fragilewing (Outta Nowhere)
At the same time, as Michelle Obama said, "When they go low, we go high."
tom harrison (seattle)
lol, I never voted for Michelle and do not listen to much she says. I am more akin to RuPaul :)
KFree (Vermont)
I'm not convinced this is some kind of asset transfer. I don't think she could keep any illegally obtained assets anyway. I think she is doing something similar to what the Madoff wives did. When they learned of their husbands' possible collusion in massive fraud, they fled and changed their children's surname.
Bj (Washington,dc)
This also reminded me of the Madoff situation.
Concerned Reader (boston)
The situation is somewhat different. It was clear that all of Madoff's assets were due to illegal activity. So it doesn't matter if the wife gets it in the divorce--the Feds can still go after it. In the Trump's case, certainly some of the profits are legal. She can likely keep that afterwards.
Ma (Atl)
“After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways,” the couple said in a joint statement. “We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.” Well, I guess the NYTimes and Washington Post said 'no' to that request. What is wrong with the media these days? This is not news for a respectable outlet, leave it for the Enquirer.
fragilewing (Outta Nowhere)
Wait a minute, there is nothing wrong with the NYT publishing the fact that they are divorcing. This may actually be important news given DJT Jr.s' involvement in the Trump campaign's Russia issue.
gc (AZ)
Your comment would make much more sense if either paper had sensationalized the story or neither Trumps were public figures.
John Harper (Carlsbad, CA)
But, you also read the article, and even commented. Your choice.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
Hide the cash ! The feds are knocking at the door ! The Trump family crime syndicate always sinks to the occasion.
Dorothy (Evanston)
Melania next?
susan mccall (old lyme ct.)
Could care less.Think this is a ploy to safeguard his $$ by putting in wife and children's names though you can't get divorced fast enuf in a sitch like he's in.
J Alvarez (NYC)
Exactly what I was thinking!
steve (Hudson Valley)
I guess she got sick of Don Jr.'s Patrick Bateman look. He now has more time to prove his manhood by going on safaris' and killing more endangered species.
Matt (Boston)
I too would want to be divorced from this train wreck of a family.
Colleen (WA)
Flee that sinking ship!
JWMathews (Sarasota, FL)
Ms. Trump and the children deserve all the privacy they can get and as close to a normal life as possible under the circumstances. As for Junior, a lot of us have the impression that his elevator doesn't quite go to the top floor due to ridiculous statements and actions. Wonder who did the "prenup" and if it can be made to stick.
JAS Resistance (California)
Michael Cohen probably did the prenup. And the alimony and child support will no doubt be paid from his own “private funds”. I believe Vanessa and the children should be shielded from any public acrimony. They did not volunteer for the spotlight and it looks as if she finally realized how harsh that light can be.
Bryan (Washington)
Ms. Trump probably had no idea her family would be in such an intense spotlight. She also probably had no idea her husband would be under federal investigation for possible collusion with the Russians. This may be as much about wanting to protect her children from even more media spotlight should Mr. Mueller issue indictments against any Trump family member; particularly her children's fathers. If this is the reason she has chosen to take this action, it is certainly an understandable one from a partent's perspective.
Kally (Kettering)
And the cornstarch letter probably didn’t help.
lilmissy (indianapolis)
Unfortunately, she trotted out there in the spotlight along with little Donnie and the rest of the clan during the election. Yes, her children should be shielded as they are still underage but until she does what Marla Maples did and leaves the family with her kids, she will still be under scrutiny.
JM (San Francisco, CA)
I am not a Trump fan but for the sake of their children, this very personal family issue should be off limits for the press.
Bj (Washington,dc)
Once they divorce, the wife and children will have all of the privacy they want. But for now, Don Jr. is a public person, both as the President's son and as a part of the campaign - which is now under investigation. So he has no right to privacy. Moreover, this is simply a statement that a divorce is underway. You are welcome to give this "story" no more attention.
Bewley5 (Austin)
Well Jr. has succumbed to the lure of politics which I worked in years ago, very addictive. It also could be a way to preserve capital to what I expect will be an indictment for money laundering coming soon.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
She will probably have to sign a nondisclosure, as the son doesn't fall far from the father. To bad because she probably has a lot to tell.
Hugh Wudathunket (Blue Heaven)
June 2017, when Ms. Trump stopped updating family news, was a politically revealing month. That was when a two-year old report from Trend Micro to the US government came to light, detailing how 2,500 politically active figures and their spouses had been subjected to blackmail by Kremlin hackers known as the Shadow Brokers. A Washington Post investigation reported that one of Trump’s first actions as president was an attempt to undo Russian sanctions imposed by Obama (it failed due to actions of hold-overs from the Obama administration). It came to light that Trump had been forced to grant ethics waivers for his entire senior cabinet. Jeff Sessions' third undisclosed meeting with Russian officials linked to state banking and intelligence operations was reported. Sessions became stricken with amnesia during a hearing. Details of the infamous June 2016 meeting Trump, Jr. arranged between Kremlin linked spies, an attorney, and representatives of a Russian banking oligarch and Kushner and Manafort were unfolding. Speculation that Trump would fire Manafort and touch off the biggest crisis of his bi-weekly string of crises was getting a lot of attention. Trump, Sr. made clear his disdain for the world's children, including Ms. Trump's, by announcing his plan to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. And pappa Trump diverted $1 million intended for kids with cancer from Eric's charitable foundation to the Trump Organization. Who would want to post that sort of family news?
notfooled (US)
More moral integrity from the champions of the Christian right.
Laura (Oakland, Ca)
Let’s recall that Robert Mueller went after the Enron wives in order to bring the men to justice. Oh I hope she folds like tissue paper as soon as the subpoenas arrive!
Mary (Philadelphia)
"At the time of their engagement, Mr. Trump accepted a ring from the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Short Hills, N.J., in exchange for publicity, recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall." Says it all.
Joan R. (Santa Barbara)
I’ll bet there IS some financial issue in all of this. Everything and every person who comes within the web of Trump is eventually corrupted and compromised.
Kally (Kettering)
I must say, that struck me as very odd. It doesn’t seem like something a very rich person would do
lilmissy (indianapolis)
I personally think they are all as broke as a joke which is why we aren't seeing tax returns. This is just Trump continuing to tap dance with the bankers.
a goldstein (pdx)
Like father, like son.
Barbara Moschner (San Antonio, TX)
She can do better. I wish her the best as she extricates herself from an ignorant and greedy family. I hope it's not too late for her.
bb (berkeley)
Get out the box of kleenex. Perhaps Ms.Trump is upset with the goings on of her father in law, Donald Trump, perhaps jr. is following in his footsteps. I wonder what she will have to say about the Trump administration or perhaps she was payed and signed a gag order.
Jack (Illinois)
Or she may just want to have her life. After all she has five children to care for.
Danny Partridge (NYC)
No problem. I am sure they will each be able to attract a new, high-quality mate.
Doajoker (Ontario)
That depends on how you define "High Quality"
Barbyr (Northern Illinois)
She's cashing in her chips and not a moment too soon.
Doug Hill (Norman, Oklahoma)
The first of other divorces to come in the Trump family, I predict.
Jim Spear (Beijing)
Schadenfreude. That's why it's front page news. I look forward to a lot more of this guilty pleasure with respect to the Trump clan, their minions in government and out, and the whole tribe of Republicans.
otherwise (Way Out West between Broadway and Philadelphia)
Why do you characterize Schadenfreude as having a component of guilt? Why should we contaminate our enjoyment? That is so bourgeois. A propos, I attended a performance of Elektra at the Metropolitan Opera this season, and could not help but notice that the ending was different that that which I recall from a performance at the Met two years ago. In the 2015-16 season performance, if memory serves me correctly, Elektra and Orestes sang a duet of unfettered exultation and triumph, unencumbered by so much as a hint of remorse, as the opera concluded. Apparently, this year the Met thought it needed to de-emphasize that. The absence of Bourgeois Guilt apparently offended some refined tastes.
Chandrashekhar (Columbia)
I am surprised at my own thoughts. Instead of wishing Mrs Trump well...I am thinking she could be part of a bigger scam to protect the ill gotten wealth. Thank you President Trump for contaminating MY brain.
Dr. Connie Hassett-Walker (Union, NJ)
You know... I had the same thought. I actually knew two couples that, once it became apparent that one of the spouses was in serious legal trouble, divorced but didn't quite end their couple-hood. It's a strategy (not necessarily the most likely one in their case). Maybe she just got tired of the chaos/stress/being in the spotlight.
Umberto (Westchester)
Possibly a ploy cooked up by Jr.'s lawyer, Mr. Futerfas.
Bergo72 (Washington DC)
I'm shocked that Junior didn't go to Jared instead of Bailey, Banks, and Biddle. At any rate, he followed the family tradition of using other people's money.
JBG (Las Vegas)
Hrm... as other posters have said, it is awfully convenient that Jr is divorcing just as Trump Org is coming up in the Russia investigation. He should sign everything over to Vanessa in the divorce. Then he literally has nothing to lose when he goes off to prison. Except for the elephant tail from his safari - he should have to wear that around his neck for the rest of his days.
James (DC)
"Except for the elephant tail from his safari - he should have to wear that around his neck for the rest of his days." - JBG No, he should wear it in the same place as the elephant did.
Bigsister (New York)
After the divorce she'll be able to testify against him when he's charged for criminal offenses.
Doajoker (Ontario)
Not if it is considered "confidential" communications. That will be determined by a judge.
Darren McConnell (Boston)
Timing on this very suspect. Must be reviewed in the light of pending legal actions against Junior.
kostja (seattle)
Donald Jr. fears to go to jail...divorce and sharing of assets happens right away...just like with the Manaforts. I fear Trump Sr. will fire Sessions and in turn Mueller every day now. Dark times.
Soxared, '04, '07, '13 (Boston)
Nah, I think Vanessa felt sorry for all the elephants Donnie Jr. was killing.
Taz (NYC)
Lots of comments about sham divorce and assets being transferred prior to seizure. Are there a few lawyers in the house who can shed light on the legality of such transfers as a means of sequestering the assets from a court order? Would make for an interesting article.
DickeyFuller (DC)
Fraudulent conveyance
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Another dubious first for the Trump administration. I recall seeing wedding pictures and video via the media of the Johnson, Nixon, and Bush daughters, and how beautiful, lovely, and happy everyone looked and how festive and optimistic the event and day was. Never in my recollection do I recall any presidential offspring filing for divorce while their father was president. I keep asking myself if it's my imagination, or has nothing positive come from the Trump presidency?
Joel Keenan (York, ME)
I'm no fan of the Trumps, but for goodness' sake, there are kids involved. We should wish them well and leave them alone.
JHa (NYC)
Oh Please. Kids involved. Yeah, there are kids involved in school shootings, DACA, Medicaid, etc. Do any of the Trumps care about them?
mont dewitt (Boston)
You reap what sow or as my late father said "lie down with dogs wake up with fleas." Each knew what she/he was buying.
Martin (NY)
There are also potential legal and financial consequences depending on the Mueller investigation. So, we should not hound their kids, but this is newsworthy nevertheless. As for wishing well, I wish his kids will, but not him.
Marc (Montreal)
This is one time when I think that there should be not be a comments section enabled. Their divorce is not a public matter unless there are issue of public interest, such as tax evasion, welfare of minors or some illegal activity. At this point there's no reason to believe that is the case.
DR (New England)
Funny that you mention tax evasion. Don Jr. has shot his great big mouth off on a number of public issues and taxpayers are currently footing the bill for their lavish travel, shady business dealings etc.
Neal (New York, NY)
"tax evasion, welfare of minors or some illegal activity." Two out of three ain't bad. Everything about the Trumps is a public matter, and no one but Dad is to blame for that.
Richard Janssen (Schleswig-Holstein)
If you feel that way, then for heaven’s sake, don’t comment.
otherwise (Way Out West between Broadway and Philadelphia)
The divorce is uncontested? Too bad. Can she demand that it be brought to trial in open court, anyway? The proceedings, with sworn testimonies of subpoenaed witnesses, would be a potential goldmine of information relating to the Trump Tribe and its business dealings.
Kount Kookula (Everywhere)
uncontested divorce? this means there's a pre-nup (a Trump marraige requirement, even more so than an engagement ring) and is also called, Sset Protection.
Reggie (WA)
We have to protect the assets. When one gets to the end, our assets are all we have left to take care of ourselves and our passing and proper burial. Then the remainder can be passed on or allocated to our family or others as we have seen fit. The whole point of America is capital. Life is only lived in order that there is enough money upon which to live while we are alive and that when we die, there is enough to properly take us to our rest. The point of life in America is only survival. The Trump Family is in the business of showing America how that is achieved. Yes, there is and will be some sorrow and heartache, but the bottom line is money in the bank.
Upstater (NY)
@Reggie: I believe the trump philosophy is that the last check you write, should be to the undertaker...and it should bounce!
John Adams (CA)
Knowing Don Jr. will be eventually indicted cannot be easy for Ms. Trump. Who can blame her for bailing out now? The upcoming storm surrounding her husband must be creating tremendous anxiety to her.
Jean (Cleary)
I would bet that the letter that Vanessa Trump received made her realize that her safety and that of her children was at great risk if she remained in the Trump orbit. Pretty scary stuff. I wish her and the children well.
Mrs Whit (USA)
I'm sure it was frightening. However, reporting suggests they were well on the road to a break up prior to that happening.
Kathy (Oxford)
Some women marry scions of wealthy men, thinking they were on easy street, glamour and money, then realizing their growing up rich had removed compassion and ambition. They would follow Papa like a neglected dog hoping for a treat. Generally a nice divorce settlement though even with a prenup.
Mgaudet (Louisiana )
It's easy to make a snarky comment in relation to Jr., but I must commend him and his soon to be ex-wife that they will concentrate on the welfare of the children.
Rev. Henry Bates (Palm Springs, CA)
Saying it and doing it are two different things. Jr.'s actions in the past year most likely have been an embarrassment to some of his children.
Alden (Kansas)
Not sure why this should be front page news for the NYT. Is a divorce among White House employees any sadder than anyone else’s divorce?
Bj (Washington,dc)
He isn’t a White House employee so not sure why you think so. Rather he is integral part of president family and these things are always newsworthy. For example much news was reported about George W Bush daughters. Simply Ignore article if not of interest to you.
Guy Walker (New York City)
Because the Trump Organization is under federal investigation, that's why.
Alice Clark (Winnetka IL)
Are you being sarcastic? Don Jr. is not officially a White House employee.
BC (Alexandria, VA)
A man’s actions reveal himself. Five children, though. Those poor things. They’ll never want for things that money can buy, but those are not what children want most. The events leading to this are newsworthy in that they reveal the character of an escalating persona in politics, but there must be a line so that the children do not have to read any more about this than what dad and grand-dad tweet. Editors?
mont dewitt (Boston)
Tweeting is like email it never goes away. If concerned about the impact of a tweet don't send it. I suspect that in that family there is little critical analysis.
Romolo Evans (Flatbush)
The husband could assign his assets to her before the Feds come to seize them. Divorce will facilitate the funds transfer and they can carry on as usual behind their Potemkin divorce facade.
nyc2char (New York, NY)
trust that those types of particulars have already been discussed. distribution of assets first, children second..then wife.
Wally Wolf (Texas)
OMG - do you think Donald Sr. will follow this line of reasoning? Poor Melania. I get the feeling she just wants out. She looks so unhappy!
GMooG (LA)
Doesn't work like that.
Southern Hope (Chicago)
"We ask for your privacy during this time.” What does that even mean? Why are even official statements a hodgepodge of now wait, what?
nyc2char (New York, NY)
are you not keeping score? Every celebrity, CEO, politico, actress and actor uses the VERY SAME LINE word for word. It means ZERO. something is amiss, we're getting a divorce. No Poetry Needed.
Richard Janssen (Schleswig-Holstein)
It means that they’re semiliterate and stressed out. The apple never falls far from the tree. Doubtless they meant to say, “please respect our privacy”.
Sophia Smith (Upstate NY)
Yes-- even if a lawyer checked that statement, no copy editor did. My privacy remains unscathed, thank you very much.
Roy G. Biv (california)
This may be related to last month's powder attack. Ms. Trump Jr. may see this as protecting her children.
Vanessa Hall (Millersburg, MO)
If Mrs. Trump Junior decides to return the ring does Junior get it, or does it go back to Bailey Banks & Biddle?
MimiB (Florida)
" At the time of their engagement, Mr. Trump accepted a ring from the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Short Hills, N.J., in exchange for publicity, recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall." How incredibly tacky. Maybe she should taken this as a prescient warning.
NMY (NJ)
Bailey Banks & Biddle is now gone in the US. (I think some stores might still exist in Canada). Everything the Trumps touch dies.
TH (California)
Our thanks to the press for keeping us informed on events. Our thanks to all involved for keeping it simple and as private as possible. Unless Vanessa Trump is involved in criminal action, I do not need to know more about her without her permission. My sympathy for a 12-year marriage ended; that fact is public record because marriages are part of building communities.
DR (New England)
No one is forcing you to read this. BTW if Jr. gets caught the newly ex Mrs. Trump could be called on to testify.
Lisa (NYC)
Maybe the Saul Goodman law firm can get them to re-enact the signing of their divorce papers? I can understand celebrities hawking stuff on commercials for obscene amounts of money, because why not? I don't really understand billionaires getting a free engagement ring for recreating their marriage proposal at a New Jersey mall, because... why? You've got unlimited money, why tarnish your marriage proposal? Anyway, I'm sorry when things don't work out for anyone, though it sounds like they have no one but themselves to blame for their marital status not being entirely "private".
Upstate New York (NY)
I thought the same thing about Trump Jr. accepting a ring from Bailey, Banks and Biddle. Really? Why would a very wealthy guy weven consider such an offer? He must be cheap . The next question is did Trump Jr. select the ring? The whole affair sounds so tawdry but then this kind of behaviour is typical "Trump Style behaviour", I would not expect anything else from the Trump clan.
JB (Nashville)
No surprise about the ring, really. I've never been around the kind of wealth the Trumps supposedly have, but I've never met a "run of the mill" wealthy person who wasn't a complete tightwad.
Vera Wainthrop (Northumberland)
Remember that the soon to be ex Mrs. Trump, Jr. was a former model, a career in which it is possible that accessories were offered at reduced costs to models. Perhaps she was the one who suggested this commercial with two models. Just saying.
Lisa Ouellette (Sacramento, Ca)
A ploy to sequester as much cash as possible, perhaps?
TFD (Brooklyn)
Hopefully she's (and prosecutors) calculating that divorce is a safe exit for her that also frees her up to testify against him. More likely, it's a ruse to make sure the assets are protected when he's indicted. I really dislike how cynical these times have made me. After all, it could just be that he's a dope and she doesn't love him.
Upstate New York (NY)
Oh, you are absolutely right and a point well taken! I never thought of that.
nyc2char (New York, NY)
the reality of it all.
Name (Here)
I think you’re on the money. Protection of assets for the five little darlings.
KW (TX)
I don't think for a second that this marriage--that produced five children in 12 years--is ending for personal reasons. This has to do with protecting assets. Mueller's getting close to uncovering their secrets and financial improprieties and so the bulk of the wealth will be transferred to the "innocent" ex-wife and children.
Pete (Oregon)
The fact that many NYT readers have "recommended" this post underscores the prevailing suspicion of the motives of the Trump family. Even so, keep in mind that any attempt the shield assets from third party claims would be subject to vigorous attack as a fraudulent conveyance. I won't take space with the details as this can readily be searched. As with many legal issues, it isn't necessarily straightforward but suffice it to say that transferring funds to a spouse, even in the context of a marital dissolution, really jumps out as a potential issue and may not be a safe harbor for Trump assets.
L (Massachusetts )
A no-contest divorce also means that Vanessa's attorneys will not require Donny Jr. to produce any financial or asset documents. That means that the Trump family can still keep all that secret. He's paying her price in exchange for her keeping the family's finances (and debts) secret.
Underrepresented (La Jolla, CA)
That's an interesting point, but I doubt it would work. The transfer of assets could not be hidden, and I don't believe those assets would be untouchable from a legal standing.
Alice Olson (Cave Creek, Arizona)
It's worth noting that this "no contest" divorce likely involves significant division/transfer of property from him to her. The timing leads one to wonder about the relationship between this and Mueller's recent expansion of the investigation into the Trump Organization's business dealings.
L (CT)
My thoughts exactly. This is a common practice with those involved in organized crime and is probably on Robert Mueller's radar.
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
The pressures brought to bear on a couple in the public eye in the best of times is challenging. I can only imagine how excruciating it is when your partner may well be guilty of being a traitor. I wish her well.
Elizabeth (Roslyn, NY)
Sad news. Let's just hope that both remain committed to their children's future. That's all that matters. While Donald Jr. has thrust himself onto the public stage it would be best if this crisis is left to them to deal with privately. Yes, for the sake of the children.
Neal (New York, NY)
I worry more for America's children.
pam (houston)
An attempt to shield assets after the Trump Organization records are subpoenaed. Apparently they did not follow the Enron case when Mueller's team seized ill-gotten spousal assets, as well. And yes, Russians hacking into energy companies is more important.
Elizabeth (Cincinnati)
An Assets protection move?
CS (Florida)
Could be
Griffin M. (U.S.)
Put aside the politics and well earned disdain for Don Jr. for a second. They have five children who deserve compassion and empathy.
nyc2char (New York, NY)
they all made the beds they sleep in.....the children will be taken care of.
Name (Here)
Divorce or no divorce, those kids are doomed to be in the spotlight the rest of their lives.
Kally (Kettering)
I was kind of hoping that in 10 years, Trump and all his descendants would be a footnote in history and we wouldn’t have to hear about them anymore.
NA (NYC)
"At the time of their engagement, Mr. Trump accepted a ring from the Bailey Banks & Biddle jewelry store in Short Hills, N.J., in exchange for publicity, recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall." This is what's known as a red flag, Ms. Trump.
Raj (LI NY)
"...recreating his proposal in a New Jersey mall" : That is the epitome of classiness to expect from a Trump. Any one of them. They will anything for money, specially free money. Sorry, New Jersey and New Jerseyans if you feel needlessly smeared. I am right next door and feel for you.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
Finally a Trump with a measure of integrity.
Upstate New York (NY)
It may be about integreity but maybe not. After reading this comment section I agree with the commentators who raise a red flag by stating that this is may be a planned move in order to protect Trump Jr.'s assets. I do not think that Trump Jr. can be trusted and just like his father he is known to lie.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
I was referring to Vanessa...
Bruce Rozenblit (Kansas City, MO)
It's always a tragedy when a marriage falls apart, especially when small children are involved. But there is silver lining here. Once they are divorced, she can be compelled to testify against Don Jr.
Mark Miller (Jacksonville)
not necessarily, the marriage privilege protects conversations between spouses and may survive a divorce. it is intended to promote honest conversations between spouses and having the fear overhead that if "we get divorced later on...." would have a chilling effect. But NY may have laws that would break the privilege.
Honeybee (Dallas)
I feel sorry for anyone who finds a political "silver lining" when 7 human beings (2 adults and 5 kids) are experiencing a really painful time. To rub one's hands gleefully at the prospect of what can be gained from the disintegration of a family requires a certain level of hatred I don't understand.
Bruce Rozenblit (Kansas City, MO)
Honeybee, You are right. I guess I'm being too Trump like. Just thinking of myself.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Congratulations, Vanessa. Grab all the CASH now, while you can. Just saying.
Ms. Pea (Seattle)
Don Jr. didn't even buy Vanessa's engagement ring, but instead got it free in exchange for publicity for the jewelry store? How humiliating for her. The Trump family has no class whatsoever.
RGV (Boston)
Ms. Pea, the ring was not "free" if it was provided in return for valuable publicity.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa.)
There are some things a person with any kind of class wouldn't do for any amount of money. But the Trumps have never been about class, only about brand. If Bailey Banks and Biddle staged this kind,of a stunt it is no wonder their stores aren't around anymore. There was a store in Philly and I always imagined the customers to be the old Main Line moneyed type. A Trump advertising the place would keep me out of that mall and out of the store, even if I could afford it, which I never could. Even 12 years ago the Trump name stood for flash, not class.

The engagement ring bit puts them right up there with the Kardashians. But I think the Kardashians still win.
Mars & Minerva (New Jersey)
Except the Kardashians aren't picking our pockets and starting WW3 so we won't notice.

Melania must be green of envy
Olivia (Boston)
Oh my, that is priceless. No doubt she is working on renegotiating that prenup. Hopefully she has better attorneys than her husband who famously wrote "The Art of the Deal".

Green ,like in money green ?
Tom (Hudson Valley)
Melania needn't be green with envy... she has a choice. Melania actually has the ability to be a true patriot by leaving Trump and telling the world all she knows.

No doubt she wants to get out while he still has $$$$.

The smartest Trump of all...unless it's a ruse to protect the little one's assets while he is in Federal prison (of course Daddy would pardon him).
Kathleen Warnock (New York City)
That is the first thing I thought of. I guess I'm just an old cynic.

Who cares about the personal lives of any of the Trump family? That this makes front page news just shows how news presentation has disintegrated. There was no insight offered in the article. Just more noise about nothing on the day that it was announced the Russians have hacked into our energy systems and the big mouth so called president did not bother to tweet one word about it. I would rather have read an article explaining why the normally loud mouth president was totally silent on Twitter about how Russian hacked into our energy system.

This family is living large on taxpayer money. There's also the possibility that if Jr. is divorced this woman wouldn't have spousal protection when it comes to testifying against him.
Dejan Kovacevic (New York)
They are public figures, and because they meddle in lives of so many people - think about Don, Jr. taking a position on gun control in wake of recent shooting - the press should keep an eye on them. The level of hypocrisy they display is exactly the reason why you don't hear the presidential tweets about important things, such as national security.

Superficially, I agree that this is more in the realm of the National Enquirer, but it could be significant if Vanessa is somehow embroiled in Trump Org's ties with Russia. She could be likened to that of a mob wife - an observer of calls, messages, and/or meetings with information that could be damaging to Trump Org and more specifically, her soon-to-be ex, Trump Jr. Learn from Stormy, Vanessa! Don't let the Trumps buy your silence.
PeterH (left side of mountain)
did Don Jr tweet about it? He tweets about everything else.
