Everyone that thinks that we need to move power from the Federal government to the states needs to look at how corrupt the states are. Aside from Trump, who is blatantly using his office to legally? steal and gain bribes, the Federal Government has a higher standard than most states.
New Yorker (New York )
Shouldn't heads roll in the gov office for the lack of oversight. Where was the General Counsel....oh he was only sitting a couple of doors away from Percoco. Where was the HR Depts? How is that Alphonso David remains mum about this?
Neal (New York, NY)
When will the governor be tried and convicted? I'm a progressive Democrat; Andrew Cuomo is a gangster.
Tomsetlock (New York)
Thought I was reading a script right out of The Sopranos series. Let's see he'll gets slapped on the hand go to the country club and then collect his New York state pension. Win-win situation for them.

This is not a victimless crime. NY citizens who live in the shadow of the CPV fracked gas power plant and the compressor stations along Millennium Pipeline that supplies it, along with Pennsylvanians who live near the fracking wells, will be choking on the toxic emissions for years to come. The entire project is under a cloud of corruption and its permits should be revoked. A full investigation must be done by Attorney General Schneiderman. This project was aided and abetted by legislators in Orange and Sullivan County and the stench of ziti fills the air. If Cuomo wants the public to believe he's a green governor, he has to show us that he's not referring to the color of money.

Yes!!! This^^^^^^. Shut it all down, now!

Indicted or not convicted or not the sordid career of the dishonest Governor must be ended by NY primary voters this year; he has no credible claim or basis to run for President. NY politics ii a cesspool. Rather than try to reform it, Cuomo enabled and escalated it and enabled Rs to control state Senate with turncoat breakaway Dems so he could hide behind dysfunction. Electing women as Governors in NY and CA this year would have a tremendous political impact.

Cuomo: "But I had no idea!"

"And even though Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, was not accused of wrongdoing, the verdict still underscored ethical lapses and illegal activity at a time when Mr. Cuomo is seeking re-election." "Empty-suit Andy" The Democrats' Traitor Trump.

I wanted to see Ken Adams testify. I wanted to see Emily Saltzman testify. I wanted to hear what Pat Foye had to say. I think the state agency that oversees economic development and allowed this to happen with no oversight needs to be overhauled

“This is personally painful” - Gov. Cuomo So, suddenly, it’s all about you. Your time in the barrel is coming, Governor.

The fish rots from the head.
Tomsetlock (New York)
Yes you are correct. But they missed a head. So far.

How is a former Moreland Commissioner, Milt Williams, working on a case with origins in the obstructed Moreland Commission? #Moxy How does Williams still practice law when he couldn't write a corruption report he swore an oath to write? Why does the NYT run from the story that membership in the NY Bar Association is the common denominator of NYS corruption?
Jonathan (Oronoque)
But of course, our fine governor knew nothing about what was going on among his closest aides, right in his office. They obediently carry out his every wish, but he really had no idea they were doing anything wrong.
JAN (NYC)
Lets hope that just like bridgegate destroyed Christie's chances of running for national office this will destroy Cuomo's aspirations.
JCMcP (New York, New York)
Zero evidence that Cuomo knew about this.
Craig Charvat (New York)
Come on now. A “third son” to Mario and Andy knew nothing about this? Please.
laolu (Beijing)
Thank NYT, for burying this story half way down the page, right below pressing stories on Instagram ad bots and bird chirping techniques. Obviously, the conviction of a former top aide to a 2020 presidential candidate on corruption charges is just another ho-hum piece of court coverage eh?
paulie (earth)
What of the companies that provided the bribes? Any executives arrested (ha). Are they barred from doing business with the state?
Upside (Downside)
"The fish stinks from the head." Hi Andy.
ann dempsey (CT)
We've always had people on the take, skating on the edge of legality and dancing with the devil. Greed, pushing the ethical envelope is not new. The volume of corruption and the supreme arrogance of the perpetrators is very troubling. Anything is acceptable as long as you don't get caught: Manafort, Stone, Percoco et. al. What message is being broadcast to young people? The next generation will have no compunction about following in their footsteps.

Yes, and a large percentage of the Republican Party now equates being a "business man" to being a pathological liar and thinks that a politician who is not stealing from the public is not working hard enough. And the large number of corrupt Democrats makes that way for them, as did the Democrats that refuse to fight for the worker instead of for the rich. If a Republican tries to use this politically say, "yes, he's going to prison. When will Trump?"
stuckincali (l.a.)
That jury was tired of the trial, and the judge kept sending them back and lecturing them that they needed to come up with a verdict. Kept stating about the prosecution. Maybe it was easier for the not guilty jurors to cave in. The split verdict probably helped that.
Neal (New York, NY)
You must admit it's novel to see a comment that's plainly pro-organized crime and government corruption. I expect to see many more the longer Donald Trump remains at large.
Jeff M (Middletown NJ)
So I guess no one was fooled by Percoco referring to money as "ziti" in his taped telephone conversations. To the untrained ear, he seemed inordinately preoccupied with pasta.
Stew (New York)
Too bad that Preet Bharara didn’t go after Cuomo. From the opaque “Committee to Save NY,” to the donations funneled through the Glenwood Real Estate LLC, to the disbanding of the Moreland Commission, to what he knew or didn’t know about Bridgegate (and there are many other examples) Cuomo is as involved in “pay to play” as anyone in Albany. He now feigns ignorance when it comes to Howe and Percoco, the latter often referred to as “Mario’s third son.” Cuomo and his good friend, Chris Christie, have skated through and escaped prosecution. Justice won’t be done until they’re held accountable.

It is a tragedy that the NY Times has decided to bury this story. The conviction of the governor's top aide should have been an above the fold story. Instead the Times has chosen to ignore it. The best possible spin would be that the Times news room in incompetent. But I believe this represents the type of slanted news coverage for which the Times has become famous. The Times reporters and editors who cover state government should be ashamed. Gene

They bury anything that makes a Democrat look bad.
Neal (New York, NY)
You found it. "M" found it. I found it. It was literally "Top News" story #3 in the Times' morning headlines email. If there's a conspiracy to bury this story it's not working.
NYer (NYC)
a "rebuke of Albany’s murky back-room dealings"? Isn't it really -- or shouldn't it be -- a clear rebuke of Cuomo's back-room dealings and shady, quite possibly corrupt, shenanigans? After all, Percoco was "a former top aide" to Cuomo, not to the (admittedly corrupt) NY legislature! He was/is Cuomo's creature! But what should we expect for a governor who creates an ethics commission -- the Moreland Commission -- and then disbands HIS OWN commission, apparently because it got too close to HIS dealings and cronies (like Percoco)! Doesn't the "buck stop" with the CEO? In this case it's Cuomo! Just as the "CEO" in NJ it was Christie, who claimed to be "shocked, simply shocked" at the corrupt actions of his underlings in Bridgegate and in committing perjury in testimony about it. How about a little REAL "accountability"? Corrupt government actions should lead to investigations, subpoenas, testimony under oath, and criminal charges (if warranted) for ALL involved or complicit, including the head of things! These corrupt abuses of government are not just leading to bad government and corruption; they're like a corrosive acid, or cancer, eating at the heart of our government, our society, and our faith in our government to rule! Once people lose faith in the very ability of government to govern, the door is opened for demagogues, faux-"populists," and extremists to exploit this loss of faith, step in, seize power, and destroy.

When Andrew starts picking on his brother again on CNN I hope Chris throws this in his face. Andrew is nothing like his dad who is spinning in his grave.
Bill (Albany)
Perhaps CNN will have a discussion of this corruption on their morning show, New Day. They like to discuss corruption in government. Let's see if it goes both "R" and "D." If I were an "R" guest on that show, I would certanly bring it up for their comment.
Jafo232 (New York)
And yet Governor Cuomo still saw it fit to shut down further investigations into his corrupt administration.
New World (NYC)
God, Albany is such a cesspool. I haven’t read a good story about Albany in a hundred years. When Cuomo snuffed out the Moreland Commission I knew it was a hopeless snake pit up there. I thought Preet Bharara was gonna handcuff some of the unscrupulous “politicians” up there but he got snuffed out but good. You need a million gallons of bleach to clean that place out, and EVERYBODY knows it.
Bill (Albany)
Every November, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday, New York City flushes its collective toilet and it flows (upstream!) to Albany. The cesspool is the Big Apple, not Albany. Don't mind the maggots.... Send us some quality folks, would you please?
Tony (Delmar, NY)
This is GREAT News. NYS corruption is ruining this state. Taxpayers have to pay for complicit politicians who are looking out for themselves and NOT their constituents. Bravo to the Jurors for seeing this through.
Jeffrey Hannon (New York )
"Ex-Cuomo Aide"? This was Cuomo's right hand, his father's "third son", and campaign manager in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 campaigns. The current headline looks like something the Governor or his people would have wanted you to print.
Ferol (Michigan)
While the FBI has been chasing their tail in Bangkok trying to interview some Prostitutes who claim to have dirt on Trump, setting up the unverified information in the dossier and protecting Hillary, the Mafia is apparently alive and well in NY despite the FBI's previous announcement of their apparent premature demise.....J Edgar Comey will have a memo coming out soon. But he does look better in a dress.
Johnathan (New Joisey)
what is with this obsession with Hillary? Trump is president, he will be going down.
