5 Key Factors in Pennsylvania’s Special House Election

So will Trump drop his moronic tariffs no matter who wins this election? You people have a leader who will throw world trade into chaos just trying to avoid one bad result in a minor election. And you all just meekly accept it. A nation of cowards.
Ted (Rural New York State)
At 11:40pm here in the Eastern USA, it's a dead heat in the Pennsylvania 18th. Meaning regardless the final outcome of this one small step for sanity, it looks like Lamb the Sham has a pretty good chance of eventually helping knock Trumpty Dumpty off his Tweety perch. If not now, then in November in the new district. Good luck, Conor! Many, many rational, reasonable, regular people are pulling for you.
TWG (NJ)
Why are 2 precincts taking so long to report?
B (Minneapolis)
Whether Lamb or Sacconne squeaks out a win, it is clear that Trump lost big time.
Allison Shutt (Conway, Arkansas)
Your live prediction tool is worthless unless you use it.
H E Pettit (Texas & California)
The win for Lamb is win for America, not either party.I can tell you that demonizing people who do not think like you will not work to get change to come about.I am a native Texan & proud of it. Few know the history of the state including those who now call it home. But tearing down others does not work,it alienates.Whatever happened to trying to sway people?Whatever happened to finding common ground?I am as Mexican American as anyone in San Antonio ,yet none of my family ever came from Mexico. I am as African American as anyone but I do not share the prejudice of someone with black skin.I am a Tejano,an American, because I too have been slandered & prejudiced against.I cannot say as deeply or at times as lethally as those who have been hurt, stymied or killed because of skin color,But I share with all Americans my love & want to share my country with others.People are waking up to Trump. If he cannot be loyal to any of his wives,to any of his 'conquests' ,to any of his children, his friends, how can he be to America? How can he be a Christian? How can he know the right thing to do when he has never risked anything? He hates,he is only capable of hate & lying. So no matter what side of the aisle,if you are for everyone's rights, not just your own,America deserves better. We all deserve better. And Republicans would rather win, than be concerned for the rights of others. For all you naysayers, that is why Mr. Lamb is running as a Democrat.
Daisy (Foote)
I don't mean to be cynical but what the heck. Mark my words -- if Lamb wins tonight, and I hope that he does, you will see a shift in his positions (more to the left) once redistricting happens. Much like Kirsten Gillibrand when she was running for a Congressional seat -- he is running to win. But lo and behold her positions shifted way left once she was running for Senate and so will Conor's if it is politically expedient.
APO (JC NJ)
oh my how terrible.
Bashh (Philadelphia, Pa.)
Democrats may have some problems coming off as elitists. But really the opposition has to get some better lines than the ones used by Saccone, that Liberal Democrats hate God, Trump and the United States. Well, one of those might have a bit of truth to it, but Saccone's ugly remarks seem to have left some voters embarrassed for him and their party. He reeks of desperation. It is in sharp contrast to the campaign of Lamb which is focused on issues and not on name calling and defamation.
no wall (somewhere)
This is an interesting election, mainly because it's not a race between a Republican and a Democratic. Lamb supports almost no Democratic principles, it's really a race between a Trump supporting Republican and a non-Trump supporting Republican. I feel Lamb will win, America is tired of being a laughing stock and in real danger on multiple fronts due to Trump. He needs to go now while common sense can still prevail and our country can be saved.
Pat Richards (Canada)
At what point would Americans consider Trump to have crossed the Rubicon? That's the question. I hope they wake up before it's too late.
Rob (Nashville)
How about 13 months ago?
Randy (Washington State)
The majority think he crossed the Rubicon a long time ago!
DC (LA)
Saccone made it clear that he had no intention of representing all of his constituents when he vomited the words “They hate God.” In that same moment, he also proved that his religion is no more than a farce that he wears on his sleeve for political posturing.
Jim Springer (Fort Worth Texas)
I read that this morning and my stomach turned over. It made me very mad and I have never met the person. But this is what a lot of these former Moral Majority feel they need to say to "their" people to get their vote. I'm still sick!
Dro (Texas)
Win one for the republic Mr. Lamb!
j (nj)
I do hope that Lamb wins, if only to demonstrate that big money has less of an effect than many believe. That doesn't, by any stretch of the imagination, mean that we should not pursue campaign finance reform. We must. I'm actually for federal funding of elections with a hard ban on all outside money. But a Lamb win would certainly demoralize those with fat wallets who think they can purchase our democracy.
gradyjerome (North Carolina)
A democrat who runs ads firing off his automatic rifle isn't exactly my idea of hope and change. I'd vote for him if I were in that district, but only because the other guy is even a worse prospect.
Elizabeth Hagen (Pittsburgh)
I voted for Conor Lamb today. This past week I received four ugly phone calls from the Saccone campaign slandering Mr. Lamb, and one cheery hand-written postcard from the Lamb campaign urging me to go and vote today.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
We will soon find out in just a few hours who will win. It would be wonderful if Lamb wins. I would hope that it would be an auspicious sign come November in California that we could do likewise by unseating Devin Nunes, a real nasty guy. But one thing my Party has to realize when it comes to the House, is that the Democratic candidate must follow the will and the culture of his or her constituents. What works in many of our districts in my state would not set well with voters in, say, Pennsylvania. My point is that politicians and the electorate at large need to bite their tongues if the winning Democrat is either too liberal or too conservative for their personal philosophy. The people of that particular district know what they need and want. Re Nancy Pelosi and my living in the Bay Area, of course I wholly support her. But if we win the House, perhaps it would be time for a change. That would be fine with me. Instead of squabbling, we should be thrilled knowing that somewhere in DC we can finally stand up to this man we are stuck with called Trump.
George Xanich (Bethel, Maine)
This election is not an oath of fidelity to President Trump but the winning the heart and soul that once was the bulwark of the Democratic party, the working class. It is hard to fathom that Hillary did the impossible: losing the white working-class and the solid democratic strong holds. The race is between what one sees an an anachronistic America(God fearing, family, work, 2nd amendment) against an America that is borderless, lawless, anti-labor and anti-faith. Lamb is the last best chance to win over the working class with his centrist pro-labor position. But if he is associated and vilified as pro-Pelosi, then the election will be a lost. Regardless of the outcome, the working-class will be in play for the 2020 election. Democrats must determine if it is worth the effort to win over middle America and the working-class or inundate the eastern and western coasts urban areas with potentially newly amnestied dacca residents?
Lynda (Gulfport, FL)
I disagree that the choice is between "good" and "evil" in this race with the Democratic party in PA labeled as "evil". In no way are the policies of the Democratic party "borderless, lawless, anti-labor and anti-faith" except in the minds of Fox news viewers, those who listen to radical right radio hosts and those who believe Trump no matter how often he changes his mind. Connor Lamb needed to recognize and respect his potential constituents as he found them; however, he did find energized and committed Democrats, Independents and Republicans in the 18th district who regret their votes for Trump and want to elect a representative who will work for them and not for the man occupying the White House. These are decent people who love their country enough to tell the world the US is on the wrong track under Trump who is only interested in what is good for Trump. These are voters who know the US must change course if their children's future is going to be protected. These are voters who want a representative who will vote for what is best for them and their vision of the US, not a Saccone who is going "to vote for us all the time, Mr. Trump said."
Adam Reich (Tarrytown)
Am I missing something here about Trump and the Republicans-are assault weapons, weapons of war, a sacred right? If you disagree with views Republicans have you are don't have decent values like most of Americans who want fair wages, overwhelmingly want reasonable gun control and tolerance for illegals-particularly the children who were brought into this country at young age through no fault of their own? Is that incompatible with Judeo-Christian values-compassion for these people-didn't Christ teach love and understanding, or am I mistaken? Are we to put our faith in a billionaire president who plays only to his base, compliments white suprematists, capitulates to the NRA and gives away the house to the wall street bankers with the one sided tax revisions while screaming about illegal immigration? That's not the America I envision. Let us reset this madness and get rid of the bums.
Kilgore Trout (Pittsburgh)
We voted for Conor Lamb today and were pleased to do so. We didn’t care his party, what mattered was a positive message and a lack of the ridiculous attack ads as put forth by his opponent. Enough of the lies and distortions! Tell us what you intend to do and allow us to make an informed decision.
Catharina (SLC)
It’s the year of the DOG in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. My money is on Conor.
Scott Montgomery (Irvine)
Does anybody know if Saccone road to his polling place on a horse? That would be a really great sign for Conor.
Scott Montgomery (Irvine)
Apologies. Rode not road, obviously. (I feel like one of Betsy's poor students.)
Katie (Philadelphia)
I never thought I would be biting my nails about a race in a part of Pennsylvania that's like a foreign country to me. It seems silly to try to predict something we're going to know soon, but the way I see it a victory for Lamb would be a huge symbolic win for the Democrats, while a loss wouldn't really be a loss.
RLS (PA)
How do we know if tonight’s vote count will be legitimate? Answer: We won’t know when our votes are counted by a handful of extreme rightwing corporations that tally our votes in "secret" on "proprietary software." Since we moved to computerized voting in 2002, there have been large discrepancies in a significant number of races. The exit polls are then adjusted to match the recorded vote. That’s insane since exit polls are a check on the final count. Even if the Democrat wins tonight that doesn’t indicate that the vote count wasn’t manipulated. One example: according to the exit polls, Obama won by a larger margin in 2008. A must read on computerized voting: https://tinyurl.com/y9xx63f6 "As the twentieth century came to a close, a brave new world of election rigging emerged. We see that two major events have paved the way for this lethal form of election manipulation: the mass adoption of computerized voting technology, and the outsourcing of our elections to a handful of corporations that operate in the shadows, with little oversight or accountability. “This privatization of our elections has occurred without public knowledge or consent, leading to one of the most dangerous and least understood crises in the history of American democracy. We have actually lost the ability to verify election results.” Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands went back to hand counting after realizing the vulnerabilities with electronic voting. #HandCountedBallotsNow!
Giskander (Grosse Pointe, Mich.)
Time to grow up, kid. The machine counting that I've observed involves the voter inserting his completed ballot into the machine. Your "corporations" blah is beyond tiresome, as if all corporations are evil.
Sheila (3103)
I agree to paper ballots but in NH, we have a paper ballot that is fed into an OCR locked box, thus insuring fast vote tallies and a paper ballot as back-up just in case.
Robert T (Montreal)
Not evil, just duplicitous some times.
Glen (Texas)
Lamb is on solid ground putting daylight between himself and Nancy Pelosi. Her tenure has gone stale and her influence is long past its heyday. It is way past time to put a Democrat from flyover country in a position of power in the House and the Senate.
DSS (Ottawa)
If Trump campaigns for someone, you can be sure that person is a tool for Trump.
Kodali (VA)
Beyond certain amount of money, it is candidate who wins and not the moey.
Jake (NY)
Pennsylvania it's time for redemption, time to start the process of righting the ship. The con man sold his scam once, but we are smarter now and won't be taken for another ride, right Pennsylvania? Time to clean the House with these useless GOP people that put Trump and party before the country. America is indeed watching you today. Don't disappoint.
Ilissa (New York, NY)
Cadet Bone Spurs is already setting himself up for the possible loss by bad-mouthing Saccone and calling him a weak candidate. This way he doesn't have to own the loss because "He wasn't really a Trump guy"...even though that's EXACTLY what he decided to be. The combination of a military background and someone supporting the issues important to his district is a brilliant formula for Democrats and it's not surprise that many military folks are running for office. I have always believed that the answer is almost always somewhere in the middle and even though I know my progressive friends might disagree I believe we need to move the party more towards the middle if we want to not only win seats but bring the country..not just the party..closer together..and the fact that I would lose some "votes" from them for saying that only reiterates my point that our party needs to find it's way back to a middle ground.
John Doe (Johnstown)
Every podunk election between now and kingdom come will supposedly presage the fate of Democrats. As I finish my cup of afternoon tea, I think I'll prefer to stare at the bottom of that cup for the future because I don't have the patience for the other, plus it gives me a reason to drink more tea.
george (coastline)
Republican voters who live in the upscale suburbs of this Congressional district mostly own homes, have mortgages, and itemize their tax returns. Many don't own a business, but instead are well-paid skilled employees who no longer will be able to deduct business expenses from their taxable income. Will they punish Republicans for the tax bill that raises the federal income tax substantially for well-paid, hard working homeowners in expensive areas? Do they even realize what their tax bill will look like one year from now? It will be interesting to see how these normally Republican suburbanites vote today
MaryHart (NYC)
Hillary was up by 9 points in PA, and we all know how that turned out. I'll wait for the final vote count on this one. And just think, in 9 months, PA gets to do this all over again.
George Klingbeil (Wellington, New Zealand)
The electorate must demand real and significant gun law reform and must insist that any person running for political office on any level must stand first and foremost upon that platform. The media has a role to play in keeping the public focused on that goal and in moving public opinion toward that direction and in moving public opinion toward that direction. The electorate must not be distracted by the machinations of the powerful influences who feel otherwise. This is the only way for us to effect change we must work together to atain this achievable goal and I think if we do many other progressive issues will follow in due course.
Ted (Pennsylvania)
Super glad I voted for Conor Lamb today.
mary bardmess (camas wa)
Thank you.
Jane K (Northern California)
So are we.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, Calif.)
It is fitting that a Democrat, former Marine Conor Lamb, will fill the seat put up for grabs by disgraced Republican, anti-abortion (except when he planted an embryo's sperm) hypocrite Tim Murphy. Another Republican tool for Trump or this Marine Democrat? Pennsylvania, do the right thing for our USA: Conor Lamb!
Robert (Boston)
The formula for beating Trump and the Republicans is now clear: run on making people's lives better, be a "blue dog" when appropriate, criticize Trump sparingly (everyone knows his myriad faults) and don't make people feel bad for their last vote for a Republican. We can take back our government if we, as Dems, do not fight among ourselves and appeal to voters via hope and aspiration; it beats hate every time and, therefore, will beat Trump-style Republicans.
Howard Levine (Middletown Twp., PA)
Conor Lamb wins this race today in CD 18. In the VA Governor race Ed Gillespie's campaign rallies were low energy low turnout. Roy Moore's campaign rallies were low energy and low turnout. (The upper deck in the Pensacola arena where Trump stumped for more was practically empty.) Saccone's recent events were low energy and low turnout. (Trump rally was in an airport hanger not a huge arena.) Conway went to stump for Saccone and the place was empty. Trump Jr. had a low energy event yesterday. Lamb ran a great campaign...great ground work...HE IS A WINNER HERE!! The Republican beatdown continues.
Patsy47 (Bronx NY)
We hope!
Mark (Arizona)
Howard, your mouth to God’s ear!
Deirdre (New Jersey )
The president of the United States libels a candidate for congress by tagging him with the false moniker Lamb the Sham He should be sued for defamation and libel - no story, no facts, no truths How can that be legal?
Mark (Arizona)
This is why we have to get Cadet Bone Spurs out of office. We need to reclaim our country and work for restoring civil discourse.
Aleutian Low (Somewhere in the middle)
The stage is yours Pennsylvania, show us and the world that American can be redeemed!
bob (bobville)
lol! Democrats still think it is all about policy! Have learned nothing and will lose this, 2018, and 2020! MAGA! Did you hear Mrs. Clinton's pathetic speech?
Suzanne Moniz (Providence)
When you all caps your MAGAs, do you hear it as maga or actually think through the words make America great again? Do you know how silly it sounds? Why can't you people write full sentences supported by reason and fact?
John Doe (Johnstown)
Thanks, Susanne, for confirming Mrs. Clinton's speech was pathetic.
MaryHart (NYC)
I'm sorry, but "I'm With Her" sounded like a response from a man holding a purse in a department store; and the Hospital logo didn't help the silly factor either. Like it or not Trump's slogan resonated, especially with the America first crowd; Hillary's slogan was, well, about Hillary. "Feel the Bern" was by far the best in 2016; in my humble opinion, of course.
William O. Beeman (San Jose, CA)
Trump fires Tillerson on the day of this race? Really? We now are wise to Emperor Donald the Dumb. He expects to lose this race, and so: distract! distract! distract! He could have fired Tillerson at any time, but Trump hoards his distractions to eke out any time something negative about him threatens the news cycle. Disgusting!
Ilissa (New York, NY)
He's already been heard saying he doesn't think Saccone is a good candidate..just so he'll be able to say he didn't really endorse him if he loses. Quintessential Trump.
Vanessa Hall (Millersburg, MO)
Tillerson was fired because he publicly recognized Russian responsibility for the death by poisoning in Britain of a former Russian spy. It's not even about distraction. Should Lamb pull off an upset it will be all that much more important to Trump to have a lackey - Pompeo - at the State Department instead of someone willing to recognize the truth for what it is. Retaining a friendly House member is low on his list of priorities.
bebopluvr (Miami, FL)
Lamb the sham? It rhymes. How clever. If you're in 5th grade.
Mr Big (Pittsburgh)
Yes but that's about all the education Trump's base has had. SAD
Frank McNeil (Boca Raton, Florida)
If Lamb wins (one poll, no matter its pedigree, is no guarantee) Saccone in claiming Democrats, like Lamb, a veteran, are unpatriotic and "don't believe in God" (manifestly false in Western Pennsylvania) repelled voters rather than frightening them into his nasty mindset.
Catharina (SLC)
Conor went to CENTRAL CATHOLIC - I wouldn’t doubt his faith.
MK (NC)
Saccone's latest statements reeked of the same flop sweat and hypocrisy of Roy Moore.
Bunkyboy7 (Monticello NY)
Forget exit polls. Count the number of pickup trucks vs. the number of SUV's in the parking area of the polling places.
Don (Los Angeles)
My dear wife voted for the Orange Shower, and drives a Range Rover. I drive a small sedan and a pickup truck, and have voted D my entire adult life. So vehicle choice might not be a good metric
R. Anderson (South Carolina)
It is hard to believe that slavish devotees like those that followed Jim Jones, David Koresh, David Miscavige, Wayne LaPierre, David Spence, Roy Moore, David Duke, Marie Penn etc wouldn't turn out in droves to support a similarly-minded politician. The question is how many of them are there - and how many are there of other-minded citizens who will turn out in this race?
JRM (MD)
Although I grew up in the solidly blue DC suburbs, my mom is from this district in and around Pittsburgh, which has always been a bit of a political mystery to me as I've become more interested and involved with public affairs. For example, my grandfather, who was a former steel worker/union member turned local Democatic politician, used to campaign avidly for Democrats and their causes through the 1980s. I'm pretty sure much of my Pittsburgh family still remain democratic voters, but the issue of unions and bringing the coal/steel industries back are important to them. My mom, however, who moved away from PGH decades ago and now work in business, is a solidly conversative republican and focused more on tax and economics. Recently, while I was driving through Western PA, I couldn't help but notice the quirky nature of the Pelosi themed Lamb ads, as well as the stark Saccone mottos reflective of the MAG slogan. It became clear to me in these obsevations and conversations with family of how our dual (andnow dueling!) party system and tendencies have drastically evolved over the years. Instead of relying on political stereotypes, I believe the race in PGH has taught me to talk to individuals independently instead of relying on stereotypes. If we could all do this, and in essence take a step back from caustic noise that has been haunting our nation, we would be critically thinking and hopefully working towards a more optimistic dialogue in the future.
TFPLD (Pittsburgh)
I live in Pittsburgh proper but not this district. It is amazing to me what the surrounding areas of the country vote for/live for/believe. The political ads for Saccone are so obvious caricatures and stereotypes of what the republican party want you to believe. I am holding out hope that Connor Lamb wins. Not because he is a democrat but to me it seems that he is genuine and not going to toe the party line.
JRM (MD)
Thanks for your insight! I agree with your outlook and hope Mr. Lamb wins in this district. He seems to strike a balance between local vs. party politics - exactly what a congressman/woman should do. Maybe he will also advocate for bipartisanship, which is a long shot now, but hopefully not in the future.
Arturito (Los Angeles, California)
Good luck to Mr. Lamb. A Marine. Former Prosecutor. Wants Bipartisanship. I hope he pulls through and secures a win.
Restitutor Orbis (Colorado)
I look forward to Trump throwing Saccone under the bus via twitter about 12 hours after he loses.
Paul (Brooklyn)
Yes, I can see Trump saying (if Saccone loses), he lost because Saccone didn't worship him enough or that Putin hacked the election thru Hillary and Obama.
Ilissa (New York, NY)
12 hours? Try 12 minutes. And that's generous. He's already bad-mouthing him so he's getting ready.
Carlos (Seattle)
I'd put 3 figures that trump will never* accuse Putin of anything! *never defined as while in office ;-)
Paul (Brooklyn)
Bottom line here if the polls are anywhere near accurate, win or lose it is a stunning defeat for the Republicans ie Trump won it by 22 pts. and the last few yrs. the dems didn't even run a candidate. If the Democrat wins it will be icing on the cake like the their Senate win in Ala. Having said that it will be a stunning defeat now for the Republicans and a warning sign but we are not in November yet. How can the democrats blow it? They can by nominating (outside die hard liberal districts) identity obsessed, never met a war, trade agreement or Wall Street bankers I did not like candidates like Hillary. Run progress libertarian candidates more like Bernie.
Prede (New Jersey)
Agree fully. Dems need to run people who focus on economics and unions and workers etc. Not identity politics, race, immigration, etc. Run more Bernies, and you win.
Brad (Oregon)
Lamb is the antithesis of the candidate you suggest democrats run. He is a reflection of his district, not one of Bernie’s babies.
DR (New England)
Prede - Equality, immigration etc. are economic issues. Read some stats on immigration and the economy. You might also want to read a few articles about the economic boycott of companies and locales who tried to discriminate against people.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Declared a squeaker by most everyone. I'm going out on a big limb here, but I'll call it. The Democrat by 2 or 3 points, to Win. Why??? The fence sitters i.e. undecided voters are going to be quite shaken by this entire Rex Tillerson fiasco. Rexxon, Love him or hate him, was one of the very few grown-ups in this Regime. This firing by Twitter was entirely driven by spite, Trumps Favorite motivation. Hopefully, some Trump fans will just stay home. Democrats : Get off your couch, get out and VOTE. This is on YOU. Call everyone you know, offer them rides, offer to go with them. NOW.
Linda Miilu (Chico, CA)
Trump fired Comey on national TV; now he fires Tillerson via Twitter. Does this man have any idea of how Presidents are supposed to act? Does he have any idea of how a gentleman is supposed to act? Who raised this crude, rude buffoon? He uses high school insults to attack his opposition; he uses Air Force One as a private car service every weekend to take him to a private golf club where he can cheat and demand two scoops of ice cream; he denigrates allies and praises a long standing adversary, an old KGB thug who is still murdering defectors, aka civilians who have a right to defect. This man is someone Trump admires, with his ridiculous attempts to look strong by riding a horse, bareback and shirtless. Really? I grew up in ranch country, and never saw men herd cattle or ride horseback shirtless. He also admires another murderer, Duterte, whose police kill civilians at random claiming their victims are drug dealers. If the number of murdered are actually drug dealers, who is left to buy their drugs? I think we have become paralyzed by the shock of this unqualified excuse of a leader; he makes news every day; he is in our face 24/7; he appoints self-interested plutocrats to head important and necessary public agencies; he never shuts up. I wish the Times and the media would cover him in smaller sound bites; give him a smaller spot light. Cover Congress; cover what is going on in the 50 States; cover what is going with our allies.
Jane K (Northern California)
Best comment ever!
JW (Arkansas)
Don't you mean "going out on a big lamb?" Sorry. I couldn't resist.
Kathy McAdam Hahn (West Orange, New Jersey)
What a stunning defeat a Lamb victory would hand Bone Spurs. Dare I put the champagne on ice?
Paul (Brooklyn)
If the polls are anywhere near right, it will be a stunning defeat for the republicans even if they win. You can put the champagne on ice. If Lamb wins you can add steak to your menu. PS: Love your term Bone Spurs for the ego maniac demagogue Trump.
Caterina (Trump Hell)
I believe it was Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth who coined the ‘Cadet Bone Spurs’ moniker.
Kara Ben Nemsi (On the Orient Express)
It is hard for me to understand how a vulgar, amoral turncoat without any principles except how most effectively cheating others and enriching himself like Trump can get conservative votes. I have been frequently maligned here in the comments sections because I happily identify as a common sense conservative, something the liberal left seems to be lacking, but I simply cannot understand how any rational conservative can fall for Trump. Completely beyond me. I can only take solace in the fact that I am in good company with David Brooks here.
DR (New England)
Sadly the last couple of decades of Republicans have given conservatives a bad name. BTW Brooks has supported some pretty appalling Republican politicians.
Angry (The Barricades)
You'll forgive us, but common sense conservatives are an endangered breed these days. I'm glad there are folks like you out there, though. Hopefully one day you and Kasich et al can reclaim the GOP
Reader (Oregon)
As a stalwart left-leaning Democrat, I would like to see overt support for rational conservatives. We don't want to be a one-party system, of any party. I long for rational conservatives and would rather see a moderate conservative reflecting his or her district win then the kind of polarity we see today. Unfortunately, we may only get there now when rational conservatives support a few rational Democrats so we can get out of this mess.
thepaleobiker (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Keenly awaiting the results of today's election. I wonder how much the White House shake-up today will affect Republican voter turnout.
Jim S. (Cleveland)
I'm not in or near this district, but if other elections I have seen are any clue, the voters by now are sick and tired of the months of all the TV and other ads. Does one more TV spot help, or does it just make the voters even more disgusted?
Susanna (South Carolina)
Lord knows I'm already sick of the ads (and the candidates) for the next SC Governor's race, and that election isn't until this November.
Kathy (Ohio)
I would love to see them banned before 11:00 PM at night. Those political commercials are bad for our children. Don't bully?? Watch this!!! And I want to be a leader!! Another idea that I have that I really like is that each time a political ad twists the truth or says mean things that the campaign/PAC - whoever is responsible for the ad must pay $1,000 per airing and that money goes directly to pay off the national debt. After that, healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc
Mary (Pennsylvania)
For a very long time now, Republicans here in Western PA have launched ads against their Democratic opponents tying them to Nancy Pelosi. Rick Saccone is the latest to do so, although Conor Lamb has explicitly distanced himself from her. I wonder how effective this line of "smearing" really is. Can someone do a survey of registered voters in each state (or Congressional district) who actually know the identity of Nancy Pelosi?
Mr Big (Pittsburgh)
Being a voter in the 18th district I have been amazed at the energy behind the democratic candidate, Conor Lamb. I've received many handwritten post cards from Lamb's campaign, had canvassers stop at my house twice, followed in the local papers as Lamb went everywhere in the district to talk to folks, not to mention the ads. It seems that the dems actually want to win this time. I predict Lamb will win but even if he loses it won't be by much and that is very telling for the fall in this district where Trump won by 20 points.
Brian (East Village)
My wife has written a couple of dozen postcards for Conor Lamb through Postcards for Voters. She's told me it's like phonebanking for introverts. It's nice to see you mention them.
david sabbagh (Berkley, MI)
I received a hand written note from the Lamb campaign. I was pretty shocked and pleasedf. Too bad I can't vote for him given that I live in Michigan.
mr (Great Neck, NY)
The events of today have diminished the media's interest in this election. A Democratic victory will be diminished likewise.
Mikebnews (Morgantown WV)
If Trump had fired Rex tonight rather than this morning, that might be true. But the shake-up at State will be nearly 24-hrs old by the time the morning shows air, and they’ll want a fresh lead.
