Bodega Breakfast

Another hipster tale of the oh so coveted brunch where millenials are gorging themselves with the finer trivialities of life. Behind this facade lies the harsh realities of gentrification in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood. I suspect this New York symbol, the bodega, will soon be eroded to appeal to the fellow customer who cannot accept a simple breakfast. She is already accustomed to a modern world that is all too compliant with those who are willing to pay above and beyond what was once the norm. The author seems baffled by the deli-man’s inquiry for cheese on this breakfast delicacy, but one might argue a gluten free bun or a vegan pancake were once similarly baffling requests as well. However, I must applaud the raw and candid honesty of the author in this breakfast gone awry vignette. Not many can accurately capture the delicate interactions we all experience daily as pawns of New York City’s daunting gentrification. Oy vey, what a troubling city this is. First it’s a look of disgust at the mere thought of dairy coating one’s delectable sweet bread, next we see a new “Supreme” shop popping up where our grandmother’s apartment once was. Cheers, Claire

Forget Katz' pastrami on rye or lox and bagel from Russ & Daughters...the official sandwich of NYC is a bodega bacon, egg and cheese on a roll. With hot sauce and ketchup.

Be too choosy. And you deny yourself the essentials.

Hey Max: Glad you enjoyed your breakfast. That said, please note that cheese fits French toast as socks do a rooster.

Alan - Maybe he meant a nice scoop of ricotta cheese? In this deli guy's dubious defense, isn't a Monte Cristo actually fancy French toast with ham and cheese? (Not recently, though I've had three or four of those in my day- but when it comes to Monte Cristo, who's Counting?)

I think that Parmesan goes great with French Toast.

Although now I can more easily get a gluten-free vegan cinnamon roll in my new home of Portland, I do miss the ubiquitous corner groceries in New York and their bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. I don’t miss the bodega coffee.

With all of that fat and cholesterol, i wonder what your arteries look like. Never mind the nitrates/nitrites in the bacon. Gotta love the Times, articles gallore on healthy living then this article with buckets of fat dripping down from it. Make up your mind which way you want to go.

Once in a while is okay. It's not how one eats daily..
