It's incredible how the tobacco companies, NRA, and others are able to do to keep their killer products on sale despite massive anti- campaigns.
They could not do it, any of them, without the politicians turning a blind eye.

Some people REALLY don't like being told how to live.

Electronic cigarettes and devices that heat tobacco rather than burn it ARE less harmful than cigarettes, and should be viewed as a reasonable step down the path to quitting. By vilifying companies who produce and market those products, the anti-smoking lobby and Mr. Bloomberg are doing smokers and those who are exposed to second-hand cigarette smoke a disservice. There are different degrees of "bad." Tarring all such products with the same brush is counterproductive.

People who understand why cigarette smoking is a self destructive habit, quit. Those who think that it's just a problem for unlucky people resent being told what to do. The profits that are almost assured from sales of cigarettes makes cigarette stocks amongst the most profitable in people's portfolios. Now, given how profitable selling cigarettes happen to be and how difficult it is for people to understand risks from things that do not kill immediately, the danger of trying to control cigarettes anywhere should not be surprising.
How many deaths are accountable to Philip Morris worldwide? Millions.
Givenchi the "fashion pillar of romantic elegance" died a few days ago, and when you start watching his muse Audrey Hepburn in photographs, showing her unique beauty, you will be also able to see many, many Hollywood actors with a cigarette. Free publicity for a dangerous product. That crime begun more than 80 years ago.
Humphrey Bogart who starred in "Casablanca", died when he was 57 years young, victim of esophageal cancer. The cause? Smoking tobacco. You can check, very easily, with a doctor that the last days of a person dying from that horrible disease are cruel, and difficult to describe. The suffering is absolutely immense.
Bogart was famous, rich, handsome and a good actor, he won an Oscar for "The African Queen". AFI ranked Bogart as the greatest male star of American Classic Cinema.
Cigarette makers and tobacco growers are not decent persons. Period.

if you live Lagos, the least of your worries is second hand smoke.

When Mr. Durante of BAT kills tens of thousands of people every year with tobacco, why should he have qualms about having one or two offed by other means?

People who profit from selling tobacco products, including e-cigs, will continue as long as there is profit in it. The way out is though education of the public, particularly young people, and changing society's norms. Only 10% of people in California now use tobacco, a victory for tobacco control - but over 25% are still users in states like Kentucky and North Carolina. Unless those of us working in the healthcare business, in schools, in science, and in government keep working these slimy profiteers who manufacture the stuff will keep peddling misinformation and poison - much like the NRA and other high-profit corporations that make deadly products.

It should be noted that the entities which profit most from the sale of tobacco products are our state and federal governments. Which is the only reason that tobacco products have not been banned and remain legal products. The money-grab ushered in by the McCain bill in the 1990s has continued unabated. The slimiest of the slimy profiteers are in our state capitals and Washington, D.C.
