A Heartland Company Leads the Media Race

They may be a heartland company, but isn't that a Claus Oldenburg on their front lawn. I see it is mentioned in the on-line story here but was quite obviously overlooked to keep the unassuming style trope in the print edition.

Meredith is like Sinclair Broadcasting. They have a very conservative agenda. And Time magazine has been an irrelevant publication for a long time. There are some pretty snarky comments from NYawkers here. I am always amused by NYawkers. They think it's the best city on earth which it clearly isn't. It isn't even the best city on the east coast of America. Pity those NYawkers. They need to try and give a go at living somewhere else and stop being so derisive of people and places unlike them. Besides, NYawkers now have the unenviable badge of producing the worst President in American history. Try and live that one down. They cannot.

California gave us Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan so that’s three strikes. New York has provided seven presidents including Trump, both Roosevelt’s, and four from the 19th century.

Wake me up when people care about the state of California spawning Hoover, Nixon, and Reagan. You NYawkers broke it, you own it.

Re "He managed to keep the company thriving when his competitors were shutting down magazines": In the past few years, Meredith has shut down Ladies' Home Journal, Fitness, and More magazines. Which magazines did Time Inc. shut down? Or Hearst? I can't think of any.

Considering Time Inc. lost $881 million in 2015, perhaps they should have shut down one or two.

I’m sorry but reading Time is like watching paint dry. Or driving across Iowa.

When did you drive across Iowa? What was your route? Did you see the prairie, the rolling farmland and the Loess Hills? Hope you return!

Agreed! The Middle West is worth more then a easy put down.

Don't let the plain talking fool you. The former Meredith CEO quoted in this story is as slick as they come. He pretends to be a rube, but he played political chess like a Master. Koch money is no different from Meredith money. Opinions cut from the same cloth. Watching right-wing media companies like Meredith and Sinclair absorb more and more of our local and national newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, etc. is downright scary.

Ugh, this white-bread,Mid-Western, bland company couldn't lick the boots of Time, Inc. if it weren't for the vile Koch (COKE) Bros...how inferior do these Meredith folks feel when they have to utter phrases like “Des Moines is so much more cultured and so much more to-do than most any New Yorker would ever imagine,” said Mr. Orr, who was the executive editor of Condé Nast Traveler before taking over Better Homes and Gardens in 2015.". Des Moines "cultured"? yeah. sure. In their Dannon yogurt cups. "Well to do"-sure. You can get alot for your dollar at Walmart. Come on. Only people who feel like they have something to prove (and know they're second rate) keep stressing how much they LOVE working a thousand miles west of NYC. I'd quit my job before moving to Des Moines (or anyplace in Iowa.). So sad that the once great Time, Inc. Bldg. has been eaten by Mid-West monsters...

You are most welcome to visit Iowa and encounter the Midwest firsthand -- its friendliness, culture, high standard of living and see firsthand, the beauty of the prairie. But don't quit your job -- you would never be happy here.

Wow, um OK. Did you know that US News and World Report just rated Iowa the #1 best state overall to live? #1 infrastructure, #3 for healthcare, #5 for education, #4 for opportunity. I traveled across Iowa while on an editorial magazine assignment, documenting the rich diversity of immigrant cuisine there and was very impressed. Des Moines had one of THE BEST farmers' markets in the country with an amazing quantity of excellent fresh hard-to-find Asian and African produce. I visited several small towns there that actively help immigrants get small business loans as an investment in building healthy, inclusive communities. Furthermore, before Meredith acquired TIME Inc., TIME also was already making a move to the Midwest. Most of the editorial offices for Food & Wine moved from NY to - get this - Birmingham, Alabama. And that title has attracted fantastic talent to work there. So, as someone who lives in NY I have to say that your comment displays the kind of derisive narrow-minded attitude that will kill the last fumes of the "best city on earth" tagline that New Yorkers so vociferously promote.

Apparently you're out of touch with all the recognition, awards, and regular "top ten in the nation" rankings of Des Moines and vicinity. We've been raking them in for years.

The reality of cultural industries like magazines or art or teaching is that NYC cost of living is too high for the average salaries, so it makes sense for the lionshare of the employees to be living in an area like Des Moines with a moderate cost of living. But I'm not sure this campus sounds like the "agrarian past," since the Des Moines Meredith corporate campus sounds like it is moving towards convergence with other corporate campuses in places like Seattle, Silicon Valley, Bergen County. There is a lot of cultural convergence across the United States--whether in Manhattan or Des Moines--so there is not an agrarian lifestyle showing up in the corporate world anymore.

The magazine end of their employees live in NY.

Americans are not going to like what's coming in regards to places like New York, San Francisco and many other big towns that are ONLY for the well to do. Many of those well to do folks lead very boring lives acutally. There will be no "arts" class in New York as such. Broadway is already Disneyfied. San Francisco and Seattle are so contrived and "plastic" people hate it. The United States has definitely peaked culturally. And the Kochs and Bill Gates never earned their stripes to do anything but make money. If you voted for Reagan, you created this. "Dead America" further melting the Ice Caps. Be proud.
