To Jay & Michael - Just an hr. north of ATL in the foothills, are some really beautiful (gated, golf, tennis, lake, equestrian) communities that do not require a trust fund and a new Jaguar every other yr. They're safe, quiet, not entirely comprised of retirees, and weather wise, very pleasant. Also, for the most part not snobbish or pretentious at all. And guess what - this area is turning purple - if that appeals to you (if so, come on down - we need you). If red is more your shade, well, there's that too.

I love this feature where NYT compares real estate around USA. Especially as readers head towards retirement, helpful.

It is not enough that the NYT constantly reminds me I cannot afford to live in NY. Now the paper is telling me I am out of luck nationwide.

There's always Ohio! For a tenth of this, you can get a 5 bedroom, 3 bath Victorian with original woodwork and original stained glass windows in Niles. $90K will also get you an historic building in Lexington Ohio, originally built in 1840. However, there's nothing for sale in Santa Fe Ohio, and housing in Put-In-Bay, the Key West of Ohio, starts at $185,000.

And there are lots of lovely golf communities in NWOhio where you can get very modern, high quality townhouses or homes on golf course, a lake, along woods for $100-120/square foot. Great suburban villages and some of the best restaurants and schools. Ancient old growth oak forests and magnificent metro park system with lots of hiking trails, birdwatching along major migratory flyways, canoes and kayaks in metro parks on rivers. One of the best regional art museums in USA, the wonderful Museum of the Great Lakes, and other museums. Good symphony.

Who wouldn't want to live in Key West? Dengue fever and Zika anyone? Lexington, KY is close to where Mitch McConnell lives. Scratch that. Also way too close to Alabamastan. Santa Fe is very nice. But it's way too expensive for most normal human beings.

Key West: what is the comparative elev. of the house and mean sea level? Santa Fe: Beautiful yard, but the tile work and the bedroom wall paper is suspect. Lexington home looks like a future B&B. Just the same, the photography is outstanding.

That house in Key West is going to be flooded or underwater in 10 years due to climate-change ocean level rise. Interesting that the description noted that it is on one of the "higher" elevations, the highest being a whopping 18 ft over present sea leve. Buyer beware on that one.
