An Unrelenting Georgia Wears Down Oklahoma in a Clash of Styles

Baker you had everything you required. The national attention, the Heisman, the state of Oklahoma, your school, maybe some Okie State support, and the weight of the Big 12 who had previously fought tooth and nail to get 5 wins, Texas , Kansas State,Iowa State, Oklahoma State , TCU all did their part. All you had to to was be Heisman worthy. Heisman winners are supposed to rise to the occasion. Baker Mayfield you failed us. Plain and simple

We've been watching more basketball lately, with its amped-up pratfalls and complaints - so take this with a grain of salt - but I was impressed that Mayfield spoke highly of Fromm after the game. It's hard to lose to a true freshman, and he handled it pretty well. And I'd heard that Mayfield was emotional player - but the level that I saw in yesterday's game, kissing the ground after favorable play etc., seemed in line with a passionate college player in a high stakes game.

I have no dog in the hunt, but this game was pure hellacious fun to watch. The Tigers-Tide ballyhooed rematch, on the other hand, was a total snooze. I fell asleep near the end of the first half then went to bed. Waking up later I checked the all too predictable result.

This is total nonsense. If, at the end of regulation time, Oklahoma was so tired and Georgia was clearly the superior team, why didn't Georgia win in the first overtime?

Are you kidding me?

Get used to seeing UGA, Clemson and Alabama contend for the playoffs every year. Saban is the old master while Smart and Swinney are the young guns. College football for all it's failings is the most entertaining major sport. The NFL should adopt something close to the college overtime formula.

For just a couple of hours, we were able to forget all about the problems, faults. and criticism of college sports and enjoy a wondrous spectacle. Thank you, Sooners and Bulldogs.

Fromm has received so little mention in all the write-ups I've seen, which is very surprising. This kid has been on the money since Week Two. Assuming this year wasn't a fluke, we will probably be reading about this guy for another fifteen years.

Best Team I saw was the undefeated University of South Florida. Georgia and Alabama both lost decisively to Auburn. And Auburn lost to the University of South Florida. Those are my national champs. How did you miss that story?
redweather (Atlanta)
Georgia also decisively beat Auburn in the rematch. Maybe you missed that?

Maybe because it's the University of *CENTRAL* Florida, who played a grand total of 1 ranked team during the months of September, October, and November.

You didn't even get the name of the team right. And it's a silly argument when you compare schedules and teams. And GA beat Auburn for the SEC title, convenient you leave that out.

The profit from the sporting industry has done wonders for both Clemson and Alabama who have for the most part shared the wealth with the academic part of their schools. Why any player would pay a dime for college if not get paid is a real wrinkle hard to iron out. The fact that some schools are better than others and the excellence is concentrated in one region of the country is no different than basketball or baseball. Not all regions are created the same for all sports thanks to Mother Nature. As to expanding the playoff system, that would solve nearly all of the issues with teams with similar records being left out. However, teams with more depth which can withstand more injuries will fare even better in a 3 game (8 team) playoff will still prevail. That will likely be the same group of south eastern based teams.

That game last night was quite a spectacle - professionally produced, directed, televised, coached, narrated, play by played, secured, promoted, refereed, bombarded with corporate ads, and did I actually see a car ad featuring the logos of the two rival colleges? The fans at the stadium pay to see the games, and they buy drinks, food, T-shirts, souvenirs, and parking. The Rose Parade brings in about $250 million. Even the people who cook and clean the huge mess are paid. So....by what measure are the players amateurs? There is a river of money flowing in, around and above the stadium, but it doesn’t touch the players doing the actual work. How is that even possible? Seems like the college administrators tasked with protecting the students are instead exploiting them.....no different really than Weinstein’s or C.K.’s abuse of young actresses....taking advantage of inexperience, bending talent and youth to suit your purpose, not theirs. Coercing them to do as you please.....coercion because what other path is there for the players to reach the NFL? So much collusion, so much exploitation, such a spectacle.

Sometimes - and this might be difficult for a New Yorker to fathom - “it’s not about the money.”

Oh please give it a rest already! If you don't understand the distinct differences between college sports and pro's then there's no hope for you.

No tears shed for Oklahoma. Mayfield is a good QB but he also is an obnoxious person which he readily displayed throughout the season with his actions on the field as well as off so I doubt that too many people who weren't fans of UofO felt bad to see them lose. On the other hand -- the national championship game will have limited fan interest since he involves two teams from the same conference in adjoining southern states with the game being played in Atlanta. That leaves the rest of country with no rooting interest unless they are betting on the outcome of the game. The playoff needs to expand to eight teams if they want it to be remotely reflective of the best teams in college football. Meanwhile 13-0 University of Central Florida which got NO consideration for the four game "championship series" will be watching the final game from home. I have no alliance with any of these schools but I recognize a flawed system when I see it and the current setup is a flawed system.

Shiloh and Sherr are sourpusses. I'm a Dawg fan. Let me enjoy it.

re: UCF. Remember Boise State?
JOE WARREN (RINGGOLD, GA)
In addition to 13 - 0 UCF, what about Wisconsin? Alabama was given a second chance as the arbitrary selection (although the Committee must feel vindicated with the AL win over Clemson). Yet WI lost in the Big Ten Championship while AL couldn't win its Conference Division to get to the SEC Championship. With a dearth of unexciting Bowls (Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, AutoNation Cure Bowl in Orlando, Las Vegas Bowl, all in attractive locales), why not use these as playoff games with the four winners getting to the semi-finals, and the losers rewarded as teams in four non-semi-final bowls. Yes, there will be dispute about the next four teams (i.e. OH State, WI, Penn State, UCF, USC, Miami, WA) but again, should AL have been given a second chance while WI was not?
