Of course it should have been allowed in court. Glad the judge made that decision. It shows how lethal this bomb was, the damage it caused. Thank God no one died. Nice article by the way, thank you.

Uh, that's not really a dumpster. It looks like a wheeled plastic trash container. From all the buildup, I was envisioning a big steel true dumpster, the size of a small car, found behind every apartment building. Maybe terminology is different out in California.

No the terminology is the same. This is a trash can, although, it appears to be a metal trash can from the picture. I am disappointed in the NYTimes for not correcting the record. I am not surprised that prosecutors decided to call it a dumpster, I am surprised the NYTimes printed what they said without questioning it.

True dumpsters come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The only thing they have in common is that they can be mechanically lifted and "dumped' into a trash collection truck.

The container is medal but the size is hard to determine from this camera angle. Compared to the police in the background sidewalk section they are standing on seem to be large. There is a lot more than terminology different from California to New York.

You did the Dumpster justice. great piece of reporting. excellent theater as well. the miracle is that nobody was killed in the bombing.

This is a very riving story of a day in court. I remember the reading about the West 23rd St. explosion and being happy no one was killed. Now, learning about the severe damage to the dumpster, I realize even more how fortunate it was that no one was killed.

What an awesomely amusing piece of writing.

Judge Berman made the right call. There was no better way for the jurors to appreciate the devastating power of the bomb, and the extent of the depravity of the crime, than to see the dumpster, and hear that it had traveled 100 feet in the air, across six lanes of traffic.
