I can't seem to grasp why Nov. 19th is both World Philosophy and World Toilet Day. I pondered it until my face felt flushed....
As a statistician myself, I would recommend taking these comments with a grain of salt. The sample is obviously biased. I don't see a single comment from a camel, llama or alpaca!

Funny column. Statistics really is an important set of ideas, though. I think the human mind seeks causes, not likelihoods. Religious certainty is much more attractive than stochastic probability. So the main goal of statistics education, in my view, should be to teach skepticism and empirical methods. Of course other formal concepts (central tendency and so on) should also be something everyone is exposed to.

"By this measure, you might infer that migratory birds are 10 times more important than statistics."
Yes, but there are a whole lot more migratory birds than statisticians, so if you divide the number of days by the number of celebrants, the statisticians come out ahead!
I'm less sure about camelids.

Lol. This is for real? The epidemiologist in me should be rejoicing.

The value for individual over collective rights in the US means that many prefer anecdotal or individual experience to statistical evidence. As a result, many are easy targets for anti-vaccination campaigns, anti-immigrant tirades, gun ownership and opposition to environmental regulation and climate change, in spite of powerful evidence to the contrary. And of course, the GOP is working hard to suppress data in the CDC, EPA, Census and elsewhere.
Many also believe problems like job loss, accidents or illness happen to other people, spend huge sums on colleges with terrible track records, or invest in lotteries or Las Vegas as a retirement plan.
Some of this could be remedied in the educational sphere if we spent less time teaching fractions manipulation and more time on statistics and probability as early as possible with real life application. And a lot more people would be prepared for the workplace, which is increasingly data driven.
Happy World Statistics Day!

But, if you can't master manipulating fractions, you have no chance of understanding statistics.
More statistics education is an excellent idea, but won't help if comes at the expense of less math.

Meanwhile the GOP is trying to undermine US Census - I wonder if there's a statistic to measure how retrograde our country is.
