I'm happy for Justin and his first # 1 record! The song is catchy and he has a nice voice. He is only 21 and...and most of us made plenty of mistakes when we were young too! Wishing him well.

Great story. It is always interesting to hear how the popular culture soundtrack that dominates our aural landscape comes about. And also, good to know Justin Bieber has found a friend and is getting his life together. I've never been a fan of his music but appreciated that his songs were important to a lot of young people.

Good on you, Bieber, for giving credit where it's due. That's the kind of mature adult behavior you've been lately pledging to display, and sets a great example that other artists might follow.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course. But in the world of pop music lovers, you're in the minority. Bieber's song "What Do You Mean", as the article noted, is his first #1 hit of his career. That's validation enough that it's not exactly a bomb. And in my opinion it doesn't sound like everything else; it's got a uniqueness to it that sets it apart from other music on the scene right now and it also shows that Bieber really does have vocal talent. If you haven't heard it you should give it a listen.

Have a question - so do they write the song first and then set it to melody or create a catchy melody first and then write the lyrics?

Please keep these wonky music production stories coming. Love 'em!

So much work, effort, original, creative thought goes into writing a song - especially a song other people want to hear - especially one heard over and over. Songwriting is work. Most people don't realize that. We, as a society, need to put so much value on that work, and the resulting songs, that we're willing to pay to use them. It's fair for songwriter's to be fairly compensated for their work.

A completely lucid explanation as to why every song from these "artist-composers" sounds like every other song from a different "artists-composer".

Another Fascinating Interview helping dispel the myth that today's pop starts are composing their own material. In order for songwriters to be fairly compensated it is crucial that artists stand up and publicly acknowledge their writers. Stop shoving the songwriter's names down in credits. When people buy sheet music, the front page should say, "written by BLANK " and Performed by "Blank ". Composition is a serious art form that can take years and we need to stop instilling this idea that 15 and 16 year olds are capable of creating this music.
