Aside from the bravura acting performances and great fun of the movie, there are small inscrutable personal moments that require high level critique. Haven't found it so far.

Since seeing him in Bloodline (Netflix), I will watch anything that features Ben Mendelsohn -- this movie did not disappoint. Terrific acting by all involved and well worth your time.
Miami Lawyer (Florida)
Brilliant acting and direction. One of the best movies I have seen this year- especially on demand.

Both Reynolds and Mendelsohn deserve recognition for their authentic and deeply moving performances.

This is not a comedy but rather a study of the relationship between two men- lost in their worlds who find something in each other that helps them find themselves.

I agree with your comments regarding the acting. Especially Mendelsohn's performance. I found nothing humorous either. Great character study in those who live with gambling addiction. soundtrack -BONUS !

This is one of those quickie here today gone Netflix - Redbox tomorrow movies. I better go see it now on the big screen. I normally pass on Ryan Reynolds ,but this sounds goooood.
Dan Fox (New York)
Scott does it again: "Gambling is where the iron laws of probability collide with the human propensity for magical thinking." Beautiful.
Stranger (Washington, DC)
Great review! Would love to have list of recommended "lived-in, character-driven, landscape-besotted films of the 1970s."

A. O. Scott is a national treasure.

A great review about a great film. Sienna Miller is also brilliant.
