In light of this week’s attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris, there is increasing concern for an untethered radical Jihadist cell mounting a similar attack here. Are Congressional Republicans really prepared for the political blowback of de-funding DHS by attaching a ‘poison pill’ to mollify its base?

The GOP Conference appears to be trying to exercise their own form of ‘line-item Veto’ over the DHS appropriation. Maybe they should re-read their cute little pocket editions of the Constitution. Do I really believe that the WH would agree to dismember any (or all) accomplishments of this Administration in order to avoid the political costs of issuing a Veto? Any de-funding scheme leaving the US vulnerable to Jihadist attack would be the analog of ‘pulling the Pin on a live Grenade in a crowded Elevator.’

Elections really do have consequences. The Republicans in Congress want to believe they, alone, are driving the national agenda, with a clear mandate for Conservative governance (from the Legislative branch). Maybe they should Wiki the election results from 2012.

Barack Obama may arguably be a ‘naive Pollyanna,’ but he is neither a fool nor stupid. He will not willfully consent to dismembering either his legacy accomplishments, the structure of the US Government, or damaging the US economy and it future prospects. If the GOP Conference believes they can ‘muscle’ him into doing so through fiscal extortion (hostage-taking), then they are ‘in the wrong Committee Hearing.’
